Chapter 3.5: The Temple of Merikka

Nov 2, 2025 6:14 am
Myrtha is improvising a plan as first Lyrel then the others climb down the rope. "Let’s all get against the wall. Chase can check from the main door corner, see what else can be seen from there. Maybe Ember could check the other corner, see if another entrance is apparent… the rest of us stay put and then we decide which way to go. What do you think?"

"There's also that small building against the wall," Aanbo observes as he anchors the rope for the others to clamber down. Finally, it's just him and Ember still atop the wall. She gestures to him; he's a little skeptical, but she insists, so he passes her the rope. He needn't have worried; while Ember's not as strong as Myrtha, a life of balcony break-ins, narrow escapes, and always having to prove herself on the street has honed the young woman's athleticism to a high degree. Once Aanbo has made the descent, Ember tosses the rope down as there's nothing to tie it to. Then she slowly lets herself down, hangs from her hands, finds a foothold, and begins crawling down the wall as sure as an insect.

Once she's down on the ground, Ember and Chase nod wordlessly to each other and begin moving off toward the different parts of the compound.

@mathias0077 @WhtKnt - I'm a little unclear on the directions these two are going; if Chase is going to the Temple's main entrance and then back to the building against the wall, he's going east and then doubling back to go north. Which direction is Ember going?

Outside the wall, not far away, Morton and Arya are just coming up the hill and discovering Ember's tracks that came before them.

Chase heads north, moving quietly.

Ember slinks east, moving like a ghost.

But at nearly the same time, dark shapes slink around the corners of the Temple. With the flickering torchlight augmenting the light of the moon, the heroes can clearly see that they are large canines: wolves or wolf-like dogs. The one to the north growls, having detected the party. Larger shapes behind the canines are starting to come around the corners, too...

OOC:
@WhtKnt - Ember can used a ranged weapon, or she can move closer and Ready her rapier attack. But if she stays where she is and Readies her rapier, nothing will happen this round, as there's no way the wolf will reach her this round on its own (even if it Dashes). Every square is 10', so at the start of the round they are 115' apart. Do you want to wait a round for it to get to her, or do you want to do something else?
rpgventurer says:
Nervous yet determined, Ferranzo throws a Sleep spell, targeting the center of the pack.
OOC:
@rpgventurer - I just want to confirm this action. There isn't a pack that Ferranzo can see - just one wolf and one figure behind the wolf. At the start of the round, the wolf is 115' away from Ferranzo - just outside the range of Sleep. But the wolves (one he can see, and one clear on the other side of the building that only Ember can see) act before Ferranzo, and they will presumably move closer on their turn. But Ferranzo acts before the figures behind the wolves. This means that Ferranzo could be casting Sleep on just one wolf. Is that what you want?

Still under the impression that the group is sneaking about, Aanbo whispers as loudly as he dares, "Help Chase!"

Meanwhile, the monk moves across to support Ember, positioning himself in front of the rogue if he can and preparing to Dodge any incoming attacks. Aanbo believes this should allow Ember to use her ranged weapons, but then considers the question of whether or not she even has anything of that nature.

He shakes his head clear of such intrusive thoughts. The enemy is coming!

Round One
(this is followed by round two)

Ember moves toward the Temple's entrance and prepares to attack Wolf 2, should it come into her reach.

Their claws scritching on the flagstones, the two wolves dash toward the heroes at full speed...but they do not quite reach them.

Thinking that spells aren't needed for such small numbers, Ferranzo gives encouragement to Aanbo: "Stand firm. You got this."
Aanbo has a d6 Bardic Inspiration die.

Chase plunges his sword into a crack between flagstones so that it stands there, quivering, while he quickly grabs an arrow, nocks, draws, and looses as the snarling wolf is almost upon him!
Wolf 1 takes 4 piercing damage!

Hearing the noise of the wolves and the heroes, Morton assesses his options, and decides that going over the wall is the fastest way to rejoin the others. Finding imperfections, cracks, and joins in the granite blocks, Morton clambers up the wall. He pulls himself up onto the top of the wall just above Lyrel and can see the situation.

"Help Chase!" Aanbo hisses to the others, moving toward Ember as she moves toward Wolf 2.

With no healing prayers remaining, Arya follows Morton's lead and swiftly mounts the wall next to him.

Myrtha covers the distance between her and Chase easily, loosing an arrow as she jogs, and drops her bow to switch to her spear. The shaft sinks deep into the animal.
Wolf 1 takes 6 piercing damage!

Lyrel recalls one of the earliest spells she learned, an arcane incantation to draw the heat from the air itself, and flings that effect toward the wolf...but her calculations of trajectory didn't include Myrtha stepping in the way, so the wizard jerks the spell to the side rather than risk harming her burly companion. A patch of wall on the Temple forms ice.

The first watchman runs around the corner, but rather than approaching the intruders, he runs to the low building and bangs on the door with his spear. "Awake! Arise! The murderers are here!"
The second watchman runs around the corner (like Wolf 2, only seen by Ember and Aanbo) and slows warily, recognizing that it is just him and his wolf against two of the infamous kidnapper/killers. "HELP! THE KILLERS ARE WITHIN THE GATE!"

Round two
(this is preceded by round one, followed by round three)

Ember grips her rapier tightly, preparing to meet the rushing wolf.

Meanwhile, around the corner on the west side of the compound, Wolf 1 charges at the heroes...opting to leap at Myrtha. The warrior woman easily sidesteps the canine, shoving its body aside with her hip as it leaps.

Wolf2, meanwhile, has covered the distance to Ember in two bounds. As it leaps at her, Ember's rapier sinks into its flesh.
Wolf2 takes 5 piercing damage.
Ember takes 5 piercing damage and collapses, dying!

"Wow!" Unaware of this drama happening out of his sight, Ferranzo calls out, mocking Wolf1. "Look how shabby your coat is. And you fight like a pup. No wonder you’re not a pack leader!"
Wolf1 takes 1 psychic damage and dies of shame!

With the immediate danger of the wolf out of the way, Chase relaxes a bit and tries to set the record straight. "We are not murders good sir. We are sent to root out the corruption in Orlane coming from this temple." Watch 1 shakes his head and barks a laugh. "Root out the corruption? I've got to admit, when we called you murderers, I never thought you'd be dumb enough to come back and kill again. This makes it so much easier!"

Behind Chase, up on the wall, Morton calls out: "A wolf took Ember down!" So saying, he opens himself up to the power of the Fiend once more, letting the hellfire rip through him and generate a concussive blast that narrowly misses Wolf2.

Aanbo steps protectively up to Ember's side, hoping to distract the wolf from savaging the young woman's body. His initial strike with the staff does little damage but does get its attention; his follow-up kick to the head snaps its jaws together.
Wolf2 takes 3 bludgeoning damage!
[ +- ] The Temple Courtyard, middle of round 2
(Myrtha's turn will go here)

Not liking the sound of Watch1's banter, Arya hustles north on the top of the wall. "Easier? Easier?!" She calls upon Pelor, who sends a gleaming, glittering column of radiance down at the watchman. "What about this is easy for you?"
Watch1 takes 2 radiant damage!

Lyrel murmurs the long-practiced arcane words. Extending her hand, a beam of bluish-white lances out toward Watch1...but the distance is too great, and the beam fades before it can reach the villain.

"We show that you attacked the Temple, we're heroes and you're monsters," Watch1 snarls, jogging around the corner and flinging his spear up at Arya on the wall. The spear takes Arya in the neck.
Arya takes 4 piercing damage and falls backwards off the wall, dying!
Arya plummets to the ground, failing her first death save!

Watch2 sets his spear grimly as he watches Aanbo beat his wolf.

The door opens and three more watchmen emerge, carrying a spear in each hand. "You should have seen it - I just got knocked one of them off the wall!" Watch1 boasts. Watch3 hands him a spear. "I'll believe it when I see it, Parl." Watch 4 and Watch 5 Dash to get further out the door, preparing to throw spears at Chase and Myrtha next round. "Careful - it looks like they brought their whole gang!"

The water in the air condenses on Eugenios' skin as he continues chanting the arcane syllables. That water then freezes, forming another 'glove' of transparent ice, which flies off toward Wolf2.

Round three
(this is preceded by round two)

Ember moans softly.
Ember has one successful death save!

"They’re scared!" As Ember lays dying, Ferranzo rushes toward the group of four watchmen. "They’re scared! Don’t give up!" Arriving next to Myrtha, Ferranzo plays a little trill on his flute, which trails into a diminuendo. The music works its magic; the watchmen's eyes flutter as their heads nod. Then they drop their spears and sink to the ground.
Watch 1, Watch 3, Watch 4, and Watch 5 all fall asleep!

"Someone get to Arya!" Myrtha calls over her shoulder, then turns to her doughty fighting companion. "I've got this, Chase!" Chase, seeing that the watchmen facing him have all fallen asleep, relaxes and slides his arrow back into its quiver.

Morton trusts that the others will take care of the sleeping guards, and he moves to check on Arya and help her if she somehow miraculously survived the spear through the neck and the fall off the wall. Out of desperation, Morton climbs down the wall again. He arrives at the bottom of the wall without taking his eyes off of Mother Arkon, who is lying terribly still far away from him.

Aanbo lashes out with his staff, smashing the top of the torch. Fragments of burning wood and pitch fall to the flagstones, the flames guttering and dying. Aanbo waits in the dim light for Watch 2 to come to him.

Myrtha nods to Chase and walks toward the sleeping guards. As she walks, Myrtha pulls the coil of rope from the side of her pack and begins measuring out lengths to cut to tie up the watchmen before they can wake.

Arya's heart struggles to keep beating. She has one success and one failure.
Arya succeeds on her second death save!

Watching the lone guard, Watch 2, warily, Lyrel sprints toward Aanbo, arriving by the dwarf's side. She is relieved to see that Ember is still breathing...barely.

Watch 2 approaches Aanbo warily, spear ready and slowly enough that he has only made it as far as the base of the steps up to the front entrance by the end of his turn.

Eugenios sprints after Lyrel toward the dying Ember, but his shorter strides do not cover the full distance to his companions.

Watches intently as the guards fall to the ground asleep, making a mental note of the Bards efficiency with the spell. The Gnome casually makes his way off the wall and follows Lyrel, but his focus more on helping the downed Ember than engaging the watch.

Added a medicine check just in case, but pretty sure Eugenios can’t make it to Ember.

Seeing the guardsmen fall to the ground, Myrtha stays her axe throw.
OOC:
Seeing as Ferranzo’s action happens before Myrtha’s in the initiative order, Myrtha would not hurl the axe, if it could be avoided. She would rush to the fallen guardsmen, kick away their spears and if no other immediate threat is present, use rope to tie them up while they sleep. She would think to store the men in the small building, if it is cleared.

matmaisan says:
She would...use rope to tie them up while they sleep.
OOC:
@matmaisan - let's say she's incredibly good with knots, so she can tie up one person each round: both cutting off a section of rope (bonus action) and tying up the person (action) in 6 seconds. Do you want to tie just their hands (3 feet of rope) or hog-tie their hands and feet (6 feet of rope)?

Round four
(this is preceded by round three)

Ember groans and writhes as her blood leaks out onto the flagstones. She blinks, inhales a shuddering breath, and realizes that she's not going to die.
Ember wakes up with 1 HP!

Seeing that the others are set to take care of the sleeping watchmen, Ferranzo remembers Morton's yell about Ember. He turns and sprints back toward the corner where Eugenios has just gone, Dashing to actually make it around the corner to see the drama unfold.

Taking a length of rope from Myrtha, Chase moves to the sprawled form of Watch 4 and ties the man up.

Morton rushes to Arya's side, Dashing to cover the full distance.

Aanbo stares hard at the lone remaining guard, Watch 2, and extends his staff as he walks forward, demanding "Surrender." Watch 2 makes his Readied attack with his spear as soon as Aanbo gets within reach. Fast as a cobra, the monk sidesteps the stab and jabs his staff, hitting Watch 2 between the eyes before he can even blink.
Watch 2 takes 10 non-lethal bludgeoning damage and collapses, unconscious.

Arya, her limbs splayed at awkward angles, struggles to hold onto life.
Arya fails her third death save; she has one success and two failures.

Eugenios slides to a stop next to Ember, ready to treat her wounds, but is astonished to see that she is awake. The rogue smiles weakly as he helps her to her feet.

Struggling Morton works hard to bring messed up Ayra around with his handy healer's kit, "Why do you have to looks so pretty. Makes too good of a target. Going to make climbing that wall a lot harder too." as he continues working to get her dear eyes open. Be so much easier if he could cast a spell to do this.

Looks like Morton is thinking that the front gate might be better as Ayra isn't going to be feeling very good when she come to. At least this time she doesn't wake up laying in the ground as Morton has her propped up. He ignores the off thoughts that try to misguide him. Seems they are always there.

Aanbo stows his quarterstaff and slips his arms under Watch2's to drag the unconscious man's body. He heads northwest to rejoin the others. "Could someone grab his feet?" he asks as he passes those huddled around Ember.
Nov 13, 2025 5:32 pm
"I’ll do it." Ferranzo struggles but manages to grab the guard by his ankles. "Aanbo, where are we going next? Inside the temple?"
Nov 13, 2025 8:32 pm
Perhaps unwisely, Myrtha took little account of how much rope she was using to tie the watchmen properly: she was more concerned that they not escape easily from the beings, and so use enough rope to tie hands and feet firmly, before preparing to take the fallen watchmen to the smaller outbuilding.
Nov 13, 2025 8:49 pm
Ember inhales deeply, then coughs. She accepts help getting to her feet and staggers slightly. "D-did we win?" she asks weakly.

"I also have 50 ft of rope. Lets move them all into the shack and tie them together maybe. Might save on rope."
Nov 14, 2025 6:06 am
Eugenios smiles as the young Rouge gets to her feet, "We did Lass, we are securing the guards now. Pity about the beautiful animals, they were only doing what the were trained for." The Wizard moves over to the fallen Wolf and lays a hand upon it. "I will need a hand moving this one please."
Nov 14, 2025 6:13 am
Outside the Temple complex, Morton works on Arya, breaking off the spear haft and binding the horrible wound in her neck. Then he arranges her body so that she's not so contorted, and soon enough her breathing becomes a bit more even and less labored. Satisfied that she will pull through, Morton sits back and considers: how will he rejoin the others? Are they still fighting?

Meanwhile, inside the wall, Myrtha has cut up half of her rope for her and Chase to bind the four sleeping watchmen (Myrtha has a 25' rope now, Aanbo has a 40' knotted rope). Aanbo and Ferranzo come up to them, huffing and puffing with the dead weight of the watchman the monk knocked out cold. They carry him past the others and into the outbuilding. This turns out to be a sort of recreation/break area for the people and a set of pens/kennel for the wolves. They dump the watchman's body on the floor and grab a coat that one of them didn't take the time to don when they were called away from their game; it's clothing that they cut up to make gags for the people outside, who are magically asleep. So far, Chase and Myrtha have managed to bind them, but Ferranzo warns them that if the sleeping men are moved, they will probably awaken. So the party gags them and then picks the watchmen up; the watchmen wake up already bound and gagged. They grunt and groan, clearly terrified. But the Dungeon Busters and friends take them back inside and set them down.

He leaves the blood caked spear behind and makes sure it is stuck in the ground in a fashion that isn't an accident to show he was there.

Morton has only hear some call for the guards and such to surrender, so Morton believes they must be inside someplace organizing. Surprised no one came to the top of the wall to aid. Surely the spied him up there with Arya. That he called for aid to Ember since his demonic attacks didn't fair well.

As soon as the tied guardsmen are all assembled in this room, Myrtha turns to Aanbo.

"Arya's fallen on the other side, and i think I saw Morton going after her, but I ain't sure. Someone needs to see if they've made it, and if they need help getting to safety. We gotta lick our wounds a bit, decide what to do next."

She then took a few steps away from the assembled prisoners, and whispered "If we're going in the temple, we still have the surprise, right now. But if we tarry, it'll be lost. Guard watches are often rotated at dawn... too soon for comfort."
OOC:
Not meaning to exclude anyone from the talk, but in Myrtha's mind Aanbo is our senior officer, being the longest serving DungeonBuster in our band, and this place is crowded with conscious and fearful prisoners. We shouldn't discuss strategy within earshot of them —they will certainly be freed soon enough, ant the less they know about our intentions the better —, but we must decide whether to push into the Temple or not, quickly.

Aanbo walks with Myrtha and pauses in his response, giving himself a mental note to not to name any of Orlane's citizens, at least within earshot of the guards. "Agreed, we must keep moving," he whispers. "It will be risky, but perhaps we can find a spot to hide once we're in."

As Chase exits to find the wayward Dungeon Busters, Aanbo considers the small resting shack. "See if there's anything useful in here," he says, his voice a bit louder so everyone else can hear.

The monk returns his attention to Myrtha and whispers again, "I'm going to see if I can find a back door or side entrance. By the time I come back, Morton and Arya should have returned and then we can all try to get in. Through the front door if we need to."
Nov 14, 2025 5:12 pm
Having never dealt with either prisoners or trying to sneak into buildings, Ferranzo is in unfamiliar territory, both literally and figuratively. He stays silent until he thinks of something useful to do.

"No, you and your friend," Myrtha said, pointing at Eugenios, "can help me search these men. Lyrel, can you keep a watch on them and an eye out the door as well?"

She observed the prisoners with cold, clinical eyes. In part she hoped to keep these men scared, in part she wished to determine if any of them might be considered their leader.
OOC:
Adding an intimidation and insight check, just in case they are useful.
"We're looking for any amulets, or tattoos," standing taller and pointing the wicked edge of her spear, she asks the conscious men in an authoritative voice "If you have tattoos or amulets on you, now is the time to let us know. Nod vigorously if you have either of those on you..."

And with little ceremony Myrtha stepped straight towards the prisoner who, to her eyes, seemed likely to be their leader, or their senior member.
OOC:
If the insight roll does not give her any clues, Myrtha will go by apparent age, or whomever was calling out orders outside, as a proxy for authority.
She exposed his neck, looking for any necklace, and began handling him like a sack of potatoes, looking for tattoos.
OOC:
The rough handling is for show. If the individual was nodding to say he had tattoos, she will go softer and have him point with his nose to the placement of the tattoo. If he tries to resist or act courageous, she'll slap him with all her force, backhanded, and then continue to speak.
"We'll soon know how many of you are cultists, evil folk who's soul has been given over to 'Her'," she stated, emphasising the the last word with disgust. "Maybe some of you have nothing to do with this cult and their evil, my friends and I will soon find it out," she continued, encouraging her new companions to examine the prisoners as she suggested.

As she continues her inspection, she talks loud enough for all the men to hear her clearly.

"You've been told plenty of lies about us. That we're cold-hearted killers. That we've come to prey on your lovely community. That we've taken your kinsfolk, and slain your dogs. Those are all lies. We are the Dungeon Busters. We work for Cecily Raptor and we've come here to investigate some mysterious and fearful rumours. Unfortunately, they've mostly been proven true. Yes, trade has died out because your neighbours have been killing travellers and traders, have been preying on nearby settlements, all to bring offerings to 'Her'. And we will soon get to the bottom of what ails your village. The cultists think that if they kill us, their little secret, their back dealings and stealing will continue to go unnoticed. But let me tell you this: if I die, heck if all my friends die, more will come. If we fail, others will uproot this evil and free your town." She sure hoped this was true. Myrtha thought that if any of them were not cultists, telling the truth and inspiring hope would probably pay dividends, given time.

"We have no love of violence, but we will kill to defend ourselves. Bertram and his buddies at the Golden Grain Inn drugged us with buteo, trying to take us unawares. We're made of stern stuff, and now Bertram's gone back to the mud. He and his torturer friend, Derek. They were put down like the animals they were. They were stealing from the travellers they killed and brutalised: both had safe boxes filled with gold. We left Lhari and Hamiff tied up and alive, just like we're going to do with you, unless you misbehave. Just like we did with your constable, though he's rotten to the core and tried to kill men who had surrendered freely to him under a banner of truce."

She paused to catch her breath. She observed their reactions and took mental count of how many of them were compromised.

"We though we might find more clues under the Golden Grain. That place was like an anthill, plenty of underground passages and hidey-holes. Carrion-eating undead and snakes down there to eat the bodies Bertram and Derek fed them regularly. And more booty. When you head down there, to make sure we're not lying, you might find the bodies of Lhari and Hamiff: they chose to gamble their lives away for a losing cause, though we had given them an opportunity to repent, and to walk in the light again. As we are giving you. If you go down those horrid, stench-ridden tunnels be careful not to be eaten by 'Her' minions. We're leaving your town now, and I suggest no one follow us: the last party who tried are rotting under the eaves of the Dim. Get your lives right while you can, because we're here to fix this problem. And the Dungeon buster's get their job done. Now, I'm going to ungag one of you, so you can speak. You yell or misbehave, and you're getting hurt, so be courteous to a lady, will you?"

https://pics.craiyon.com/2023-10-26/39dd634df3c04b909381a20fe18b9e4a.webp After bandaging up Ayra's horrible wound on her neck and making sure that she didn't break anything from the fall but is sure she probably going to feel that fall when she comes around, he will probably end up carrying her over his convient shoulder as she is just too heavy in armor and all to just carry her in his arms. Morton is no weakling but he sure isn't superman.

He is carrying her carefully not to disturb all the bandaging and still ends up with samples of her blood on him. Still better than having his own samples. He is careful not loose any her belongings in the process including the weapon she had out when she tumbled off the wall. She sure doesn't look as pretty bandaged up.

He leaves the part of the spear behind laying against the wall showing that he had been here as there is no way the spear could have been that way except by someone placing it. Just in case someone in the party sees it. Perhaps they will figure it out. He isn't too concerned as he heaves some and up goes Ayra on his shoulder.

He makes his way along the side of the temple toward were he suspects the gate to enter in is. Not totally sure what he is going to have to do but right now it is a lot easier than trying get unconscious Ayra up on top of that wall and back down. Worse case he simply has to hold out till she recovers enough to be conscious but that going to take possibly hours. Temple gate is much closer. He does try not to arouse any unwanted company as he moves.

Owning some rope and a grappling hook is looking a bit appealing. But for a guy that couldn't afford food, that was likely have happened, but now at least he does some coin. Just some useless thoughts as he hauls Ayra along.

OOC:
The healing potion restores 2d4+2 HP. @WhtKnt should roll that when Ember drinks the potion.
After this, Chase goes out into the courtyard and unbars the gate. He opens it and peers outside, seeing Morton staggering along with his grisly burden outside. Together they carry Arya Arkon's unconscious, wounded body back inside the Temple gate, across the courtyard, and into the outbuilding with the others.

Myrtha is in the midst of her intimidating monologue when they arrive. None of the captives nodded, but on searching them, Eugenios, Ferranzo, and Myrtha discover that each of them has been branded, which has left a spiral-shaped scar similar enough to the tattoos, medallions, and the carving in the branch as to certainly not be coincidental.

The watchmen get more and more distressed, panting through their noses and groaning as Myrtha goes through the list of cultists that the heroes have killed.

It's not obvious to Myrtha which one of these watchmen is in charge, but the oldest one is clear enough: all of them are human, and one has thinning grey hair. He's the one whose gag she removes. He's clearly very frightened, but tries to cooperate with a quavering, shivering voice. "I-I-I promise to be c-c-courteous, lady." He cranes his head in a futile attempt to see the other adventurers from his position, lying on his side, hog-tied on the floor. "Everyone...W-what do you want with us?"

As member Morton returns in with obviously bandaged fine looking Ayra over his weighted shoulder. Obviously, he is a touch stressed as she is in her heavy armor and not a minor easy load. He critially glazes over the few held watchmen and his hazel eyes focus on one of them as he points to that one with saying, "You'er the one that caused this." Appears that he is rightly now accusing the one evil watchman for the unconscious serious condition that priestess Ayra is in. Obviously by the bandaging that it is rather life threating and serious wound upon her neck. Simple Morton is rather pissed.

He places potato sack Ayra down and now checks to see if she might have a healing potion or such among her goods but he doubts that she does. "It is going to be hours before she is awake if we don't find a means to heal her." He snears greatly at the one watchman as he records a simple report of her condition. Appears that the watchman spear'ed her off the wall.

Nov 18, 2025 8:29 am
"Good," Myrtha answered the gray-haired man. "We keep this courteous, and no one gets hurt."

Myrtha was perturbed by the fact that all of these men were branded with the symbol of the accursed cult. Were they true-believers, or had they been forced into taking the mark out of a twisted sense of loyalty to the town?

"That's a good question to start with. Where are the people who get taken by your leaders? We've heard they are taken to 'her', is this here in Orlane? in the Temple? Somewhere else?"

"And while you're thinking about that one, who branded you? Were you pressed into joining this cult?" The last question, she asked eyeing the assembled prisoners, and not their presumptive chief.

The older watchman writhes as he speaks, not just because he's trying to keep everyone in view as he's lying on his face with his hands and feet tied behind his back, but because he's having a hard time answering some of the questions...as if they're causing him additional discomfort. "I haven't kidnapped anyone. We're just in charge of keeping people out of the temple at night, so I don't know how much I can tell you...but-but I will tell you everything I can!" He takes a deep, shuddering breath. "I think the people who are taken are brought into the Temple, at least at first. If they come in during the day, we wouldn't know, because we only work the night shift. But I think maybe sometimes a group will arrive at night. I don't always recognize everybody when these groups arrive. Then they come out, and they...nngh! NNGH!!" He convulses as he tries to speak, all his muscles contracting. After twenty seconds of this fit, he relaxes, and continues: "We come back from Her changed, all our troubles, our worries, and our shame washed away! All praise her!" At this, the other three, who've been grunting and panting through their gags, all hum through their gags in unison. "You'll find out. You'll join us, one way or another." He begins to cackle and the other three gasp and guffaw around their gags. Eventually his mad laughter slows and stops. "Then we'll all live together in harmony."

At some point during the interrogation, Aanbo wanders off to explore the courtyard as he suggested he might.

"That was never our plan,", Myrtha looked at Lyrel with a hint of stress, "and whatever we do, we will not discuss it here," she added, still turned to the flamboyant wizard, her eyes darting at the prisoners, as if saying 'hush hush'.

"Does she brand you, or is there someone else who does it for you?"

Myrtha considered asking further questions, but she was concerned that dawn would soon break, and with it, the change of guard. "Do you see the dwur?" she asked Lyrel, using the flanish term for dwarf so as to not name Aanbo.

With Chase's urging, the energy of green and growing things flows up through the floor and into his feet. The hairs rise on his arms as the power fills him, and then Chase directs this vitality into Mother Arkon. Arya revives, coughing and wheezing and clutching her neck, which is still very painful to the touch under Morton's bandage. She starts to speak: "What happened? Where are we?" revealing that her clear mezzo-soprano voice is now a husky, rasping contralto, slightly nasal from a nose that was broken in the fall and not healed exactly the way it was. But the others shush her, pointing to Myrtha's ongoing interrogation of the watchmen that have been hog-tied and dropped on the floor.

"No, she doesn't brand us!" the man says, his mouth muffled somewhat by the floorboards. He tries to crane his neck to the side again so he can speak more clearly. "We did this ourselves, long ago. It's the symbol of Telchur; a bunch of us..." his voice drops into a mumble.

"What did you say??!?" Arya interjects, her low, scratchy voice cracking with indignation.

"I said," the man sighs, "a bunch of us tried worshipping Telchur years ago. The spiral is clearly the sign of a wind god!" Arya, a Pelorite, stares at him with burning eyes. It's unclear to the rest of you what she is angrier about: being nearly killed, or the worship of a wind god.

While this was happening, Aanbo has made a quick survey of the courtyard and the exterior of the Temple of Merikka itself. The outbuilding with the kennels where the others are interrogating the watchmen stretches along the inside of the western face of the wall surrounding the Temple. Along the north wall are smaller buildings: an enclosed shed and an open hut with an overhanging roof. The monk's quick glimpse into these buildings reveal that they are filled with agricultural tools and gardening supplies...exactly the sort of thing you'd expect in a Temple to the goddess of agriculture. As Aanbo continues his circuit of the huge building, he sees that there are no further buildings in the courtyard.

The Earthshaker monk turns his attention to the Temple building itself. The Temple is taller than the walls surrounding it, but like the walls, it has been formed from massive granite blocks. He counts out the number of steps he has to take to pace the length of each side. The Temple appears to have a square floorplan, with each side about 50 paces long. Aanbo estimates that the Temple is about 15 paces tall. The first ten or twelve paces of height are very nearly vertical, but after that, the roof slopes in a shallow peak that is bisected by a squashed-looking onion dome which makes up the remainder of the height. In the southern wall, curved steps lead up to large, ornately-carved wooden double-doors. There are no windows or other doors in the Temple's walls. Sconces set into the Temple's exterior walls hold lit torches, which will burn out well before dawn, which is now a bit over an hour away, judging by the advent of false dawn in the night sky.

Having seen all this, Aanbo hurries back to the outbuilding to join the others.
Nov 20, 2025 10:33 am
Myrtha was happy to see Arya resurface, and relieved to see Aanbo return.

To the priestess she asked "Good you're back. Do you want to share something about this god of theirs?"

To Chase, she simply nods. The idea of ambushing the fresh guards makes sense, assuming they can be handled quietly. Her eyes went to Ferranzo. It was after all his incantation that led to the fall of the guardsmen. Looking at the halfling, she ponders "What you did earlier, can you still do it? I mean, make them sleep..."
Nov 20, 2025 10:51 am
Standing just off to the side Eugenios’ eyes scanning both interrogator and prisoner, a cold look of concentration upon his features as if taking mental notes of the conversation. Eugenios recognizes that Telchur is one of the four Oeridian gods of wind: the winter wind.

Arya croaks a response to Myrtha's question, wincing with each syllable. Despite the pain from her nearly-mortal wound, she is too accustomed to speaking with authority on every subject, and she can't seem to abbreviate herself. "I don't know anything other than Telchur is cousin to Merikka...Merikka, whose temple they are defending! Imagine what kind of degenerate would abandon their god for some other! I can't stand people who are fickle in their faith."
Nov 21, 2025 4:41 am
Aanbo will knock upon the door to the building and wait for acknowledgement before daring to identify himself in a whisper. Best not surprise his heavily-armed companions with a sudden intrusion, especially since he himself is on edge and alert in such close proximity to their target. He checks over his shoulder for any other unusual or suspicious activity.
Nov 21, 2025 4:47 am
Silence is golden. Ferranzo turns his back to the prisoners. He nods at Myrtha and holds up his right index finger in front of his chest, indicating one more.
Nov 21, 2025 5:41 am
Aanbo approaches the door, where Lyrel - who is keeping watch in the doorway - sees him and nods.
Nov 21, 2025 7:02 am
Eugenios moves closer to the group and addresses the speaker guard in a calm, controlled voice similar to that a father would use when explaining something to a child. "As my wise colleague points out, why is it that so many followers of a Chaotic God would change to one of Law and protection? And for them to put you in a position to watch over the flock." The Wizard’s eyes not straying as he waits an answer.
Nov 21, 2025 6:27 pm
"Answer my friend," Myrtha added, emphasising Eugenios' question. She nodded at Ferranzo, happy to hear he might still have the retired power to put the second group of guardsmen to sleep.
Nov 21, 2025 6:33 pm
Aanbo takes a moment to listen and gauge where the group is in the conversation. He leans over to Myrtha and whispers, "Wind God? What's the deal with all the snakes, then?"

"It was something we did long ago, when we were young and rebellious. What better way to rebel than to reject the goddess?" the watchman sighs, his face still pressed into the floorboards. He groans a little as he tries to shift to a less-painful position: an impossibility. "We saw the error of our ways long ago, of course. "Now we all serve Her, and of course She is happy to have us work for the greater good. We're not the ones going around killing dogs and invading holy ground."

Aanbo only caught the tail end of this conversation, but he can tell that the watchman is lying in some aspect of his story. The fervor in his voice reminds the dwarf too much of Jonbon to be taken credulously.
Nov 22, 2025 10:55 am
Eugenios slides closer allowing the uncomfortable guard to see the smile and look of interest and pleasure at his predicament, "Tell me about her, and your love for her. I want to hear about her love for you." The Gnome has closed the gap on the elder guard now, placing his hand on the guard’s shoulder applying just enough pressure to making is slightly more difficult to catch one’s breath.

While Eugenios slips comfortably into his bad cop routine, Chase exits and fetches first one wolf corpse and then the other. Dumping them on the floor, he stands as an imposing figure, covered in blood. Aanbo moves from companion to companion, whispering to each that the only obvious way into the Temple is through the door. Arya, relieved to focus on something other than incipient torture, nods her understanding. A bit less than an hour remains before dawn. The watchman wheezes, pressed into the floor.

Stationed at the door, Lyrel nods to the elf as he announces his intent to watch the entrances/exits. The wizard, having raised the possibility of a geas, turns over the nature of such magic compulsions in her mind. She knows that people under a geas cannot act against the commands of the caster, but she's not sure what could end a geas. The caster can stop a geas voluntarily, but would killing the caster also break the geas? She's not sure. Could there be other magic that produces a similar effect?

Morton leaves and finds a twisted, overgrown bush to hide behind. The grounds would have been lovely at one time in the past, but they've been badly neglected despite all the tools that Aanbo found in the other outbuildings. From his crouched position, Morton can easily see both the gate in the wall and the door in the Temple.

"Slavery??!" The watchman is clearly offended at Ember's objection. "We all choose to love Her willingly! No one regrets their decision, right?" There is a chorus of grunting assent, muffled by sodden gags. It's clear that these people cannot recognize how they've been controlled, no matter how much evidence is presented to them. It's becoming clear to everyone what Lyrel has already understood: no amount of talking is going to change their minds. "Slavery? The idea is ridiculous. She brings freedom!"

"Ahh..." He sighs with relief when Eugenios removes his pressing hand. "Goddess...?" The watchman is clearly confused by the gnome's questions. "Oh, you must mean Merikka." He says the deity's name with clear derision. "Nobody cares about Merikka once they meet Her. She's so much better than some god. I forget sometimes how it is for people like you, who haven't met Her. Names are unimportant, trivial compared to the closeness you feel when you become one with Her. Gods are far away, but She is here and now, as real as you or me. She asks, merges, blends, gets to know you inside and out, closer than anyone you've ever known. Do you know what it feels like to be completely known, and accepted?" He giggles. "You will! Everyone will come to love Her eventually!"

It doesn't take much insight for Eugenios to realize that the man doesn't actually know "Her" name, and that he's not bothered by that ignorance.

From their previous time spent in Orlane, however, Eugenios (the past few days) and Ferranzo (from many previous visits) both know that the Temple opens its doors to the public during the day; there aren't guards patrols during the day. The night guardsmen may be missed, but that shouldn't happen in less than an hour: enough time for a short rest if that groups wants to do that.
Nov 25, 2025 11:03 am
Myrtha shook her head with disappointment at the last round of questions and responses. Lyrel was right, these people had been put under some powerful charm and would not cough up any valuable information. She considered silently what the party's options were. They might take advantage of the ebbing night to strike the Temple with the remains of surprise. They could move out under cover of darkness, regroup and plan a raid at a different moment. Or they could breath for a few moments and then strike as soon as the temple doors were opened to the people of Orlane. Surprise supposed at least being able to slip through the Temple's doors without causing such a ruckus that all within could prepare to respond to their assault.
OOC:
I would lik to know what the other players, as players, think. Myrtha is awfully aware that they shouldn't be discussing in front of the prisoners. So before she articulates any tentative planning (and a smokescreen to our prisoners), I'd like to have an idea what you all are inclined to do...

What are you inclined to do? Public

Strike while the iron's hot! Let's hit the temple now
Retreat and regroup! (We know more now, and those who want to leave to Hochoch can do so more easily)
At dawn we attack! (take a short rest, manage the prisoners, and go in as soon as the doors are opened)

She gives a little start, and looks toward the wall. "Why isn't the gate open?" She gives a little sigh and heads back inside, shaking her head.

Ferranzo is anxious and tries not to show it. He is familiar with the traditions honoring the goddess Sheela Peryroyl, but unaware of most of the ways of other deities. As he awaits news from outside, he asks the guards’ leader, "Is there some ceremony for opening the temple in the morning? Perhaps a procession or a service outside the doors?"

Aanbo will deduct 4 uses of his healer's kit as per the custom rules (Ember, Arya, Lyrel, and himself). I'd like to see if I can replenish the supplies before we break camp. Morton already used a healer's kit on Arya.

Eugenios watches the Priestess as she comes into view and contemplates why the doors are not open, and absentmindedly plays with the buckle on his components pouch. His eyes search this Priestess’s appearance to see if he can notice anything about her that might not be quite right. His active mind then considers Ferranzo’s question on Merikkian Worshipper’s routines, having spend many an hour reading, watching and asking questions on such subjects as not to offend any church or religion he may have to investigate.

FYI, in our game recovering HP after a short rest requires an application of a healer's kit. This is in addition to stabilizing someone who's unconscious at 0 HP.

Also, I think the temple doors are open, but the gate to the road is closed. Unless Morton deliberately said otherwise?
"Let's go," says Aanbo, securing any of his equipment that wasn't already. "There may be more activity if we delay any longer."

The monk steps outside, leaving the guards where they lie; it's likely someone will find them, otherwise the party can come back after they've dealt with those within the temple. Aanbo heads directly for the main doors.
Dec 1, 2025 8:50 pm
Just to restate: there are four things that could be called "doors:"
1) the gate in the wall
2) The doors leading in to the Temple
3) The door to a storage shed (closed now, but Aanbo checked it earlier and found it empty except for gardening tools)
4) The door to the outbuilding used by the night watch and as a kennel for the dogs (now dead)

Number 4 - the door to the outbuilding (where everyone except Aanbo and Morton were resting) - is open.
Now, Morton has just observed number 2 - the double doors leading in to the Temple - being opened.
The gate out of the complex is still closed, but Chase demonstrated earlier that it can be opened easily from the inside.

Unless I misunderstood which door Chase meant, this is where everyone was when the Temple doors opened.
https://i.imgur.com/xhWlgrd.png

Morton stands up from the crouch he's maintained for the past hour and a half and feels that sensation of pins and needles as circulation flows back into his feet. He swiftly moves back across the courtyard, gestures to Aanbo, and then enters the outbuilding to tell the others about the open Temple door.

The one watchman who hasn't been gagged and stuffed into a kennel (though he is still hog-tied) responds to Ferranzo's question, his face pressed into the floor by gravity and his giving up on trying to crane his neck to the side: "Not a ceremony, no. It's part of our job to snuff the torches and open the gates at the end of the night. Merikka doesn't care about the dawn or really any daily observations. Her ceremonies are all seasonal: sowing, growing, harvesting, all that kind of nonsense. It was a good gig, until I realized the truth." He chuckles grimly at Lyrel's comment. "Maybe you should go in to the Temple and explain to her that there's nothing wrong, and why the gate isn't open already."

Looking at the others "Dawn has broke the doors are open let us make a visit to her." Hefting his bow nocking an arrow he nods to Aanbo that he is ready.
Dec 2, 2025 5:35 am
Aanbo is out the door, so Ferranzo whispers to Lyrel, "Should a couple of us open the gates first? It would provide an escape route if we need it. On the other hand, if they're closed, that might prevent reinforcements."
Dec 2, 2025 7:07 am
Good question Ferranzo. Once the gates are opened they are hard to close, lets keep them closed, and contain one problem at the time.
Dec 2, 2025 9:42 am
Myrtha knelt by the prisoner.

"It was good you were reasonable. We're leaving now, and soon someone will come to free you. Let me remind you," and speaking louder so that the other tied guardsmen could hear as well, "I hope our paths do not cross again, and I hope you never bear arms against us, or you'll end up like Hamiff and Lhari, you'd have spoiled your life way. So take this opportunity to change your ways while you can."

Before the man had any opportunity to respond, she set his gag back. The flanish warrior did not think these men were capable of changing, and so internally prepared herself to have to slay them, unless somehow the powerful brain-washing they had suffered could be somehow broken.

Myrtha grabbed her bulky shield, feeling its fit on her arm, making sure her grip was solid. Gearing up always brought a sense of purpose and focus. She took the spear, and made ready to head outside.
OOC:
Once the group is ready, she'll bee-line towards the corner closest to the temple doors, and hug the wall there.

As a general matter, she would have used this hour of rest to collect the guardsmen's weapons, bundle them in one of their cloaks or capes or some other sturdy fabric, and toss them over the wall, with help from others to accomplish that, if necessary. She's made her peace with the fact they will be freed, but they don't need to be immeadiately rearmed once they're bindings are cut.

The party leaves the bound-and-gagged watchmen locked in the dog kennels and leaves the outbuilding. Having gathered and bundled up all the watchmen's spears in a cloak during their rest, Myrtha engages in the heavy athleticism of heaving the bundle up and over the 20'-tall wall. It takes a few tries, but eventually the bundle is over the wall without opening the gate. If anyone thinks that it would have been easier to throw the spears individually, they wisely keep it to themselves. Aanbo leads the way up the wide stairs to the Temple of Merikka's open doors.

https://i.imgur.com/UOTFGpI.png

Just inside the doors, a wide hallway leads north, opening into the central sanctuary of the temple. This large room has a tile floor decorated with an abstract mosaic pattern in orange, tan, brown, and blue. Flame lamps hung from hooks on the walls illuminate the interior, showing that several tapestries decorate the walls. Five huge tree trunks serve as columns in the room, and a jade statue of a beautiful young woman is mounted on a low dais along the north wall. Closed doors are visible on either side (east and west walls).

Myrtha closes the large double doors and Chase replaces the bar that prevented it from being opened at night. As they are doing this, Morton hurries past the others into the larger part of the sanctuary, stationing himself by one of the tree trunks. From here, he can see that there are two more doors, set in the southern wall on either side of the entrance hall.

Aanbo follows more cautiously, peering around the corner, but he sees much the same thing. Someone must refill the lamps periodically; with no windows and the doors shut, this sanctuary would be completely dark without them. The two wizards, Lyrel and Eugenios, stick close together behind the Earthshaker monk.

Arya strides forward into the sanctuary, with Ember in her wake (and Ferranzo concealing himself behind the rogue). "Is there no one here?" Mother Arkon bristles.

Just then, the door on the left opens and a Temple servant - clad in the robes of a Merikkian novice - steps through. He sees the heroes "Oh!" and smiles broadly: "Welcome, visitors! What brings you to seek Merikka today?"

Morton flits from one severed tree trunk to another, stealing his way partway around the room past the door on the right-hand wall. With the others drawing attention, he's pretty sure that the acolyte has forgotten about him by the time he reaches his hiding place.

"Good morning, what a beautiful sanctuary this is," Myrtha genially bellows as she struts into view with shield and spear, followed by Aanbo and Eugenios. Eugenios definitely has the sense that this man is here to talk, not to fight...though it is a bit suspicious that he's not more alarmed by armed strangers. In his long experience of interrogating witnesses, the gnome has usually observed that people are unnerved by openly-carried implements of violence. And that was just him, a gnome with some questions by himself, without a bruiser like Chase standing with arrow nocked or the wall that is Myrtha looming overhead. As he observes this, the warrior woman has continued talking. "We are from out of town, but have heard much of this Temple, and of Merikka’s blessing of the orchards and farmlands around these parts. We’ve come to see it with our own eyes!"

Seeming slightly larger than life, the Valorous Maiden of Three Elms has always been impossible to ignore; the novice is following her words and nodding politely as she approaches. The graceful teen "Mother" Arkon, meanwhile, makes no attempt to interact with the acolyte and strides forward, her muscles rippling under her jingling heavy armor as she approaches the jade statue. The statue is surprisingly well-crafted: it's a single piece of jade about the size of Eugenios that has been carved into a realistic representation of the harvest goddess, Merikka. Here she is a beautiful young woman - ::almost as beautiful as me:: Arya thinks to herself - holding a basket of grain under one arm and a scroll in the other. Everything about it seems genuine, though Merikka is usually depicted as a matron rather than a maiden. Ember casually saunters forward in her wake but then pauses to hide behind a pillar, with Ferranzo still hidden behind her. Unlike Myrtha or Arya and despite her winning personality and fetching half-smile, Ember has a way of deflecting attention, of becoming so uninteresting that she just disappears into the background. If Ferranzo wasn't paying such close attention to stay hidden himself, he might have lost her. It's certain that the acolyte cannot see her.

https://i.imgur.com/CkAnGky.png

"Everyone is welcome!" the acolyte responds. "Merikka is beloved by most people in these parts, for the great bounty she has provided. Orlane is famous for the quality of its produce. Do you have any questions, or a prayer you would like to offer?"

Ferranzo observes that the tapestries are old but well-maintained. As is typical for textile artwork, they do not attempt to portray specific places or particular people, but rather general ideas or anonymous individuals in historical events. These all depict farmers working the land, plowing, sowing, harvesting as an unlikely combination of unrelated crops grow improbably lush and large. This matches Ferranzo's experience of Orlane in the past: the biggest melons he's ever seen, the juiciest berries, the richest nuts, cucumbers the size of your arm! Orlane has long been considered the breadbasket of this region of the world; it's clear that the Merikkians are prepared to credit their goddess with this bounty.

That's all hazy to me now, and it hasn't been my job since I met Her." The door closest to Morton (the door in the east wall) opens and three men in robes step through. "But what marvelous timing! Look takes 12 bludgeoning damage!

Chase pivots, draws, and looses, sending his arrow toward Look's thigh. Despite sparring with Aanbo, Look has the presence of mind (not to mention training) to snatch the arrow out of the air! He breaks the arrow and tosses it aside.
With practiced ease, the ranger shoulders his bow and draws his short sword!

Chon rushes Arya, punching and kicking in a whirlwind of motion! Arya's leg snaps as the punch connects with her knee, and the kick connects with her head.
Arya takes 14 bludgeoning damage and barely remains standing on one leg!

Unseen, Ember rushes forward to stab Look in the back.
Look takes 14 piercing damage!

The acolyte takes a step forward and he watches what is happening, Readying himself with a slight smile still on his face.

Mok rushes forward to engage Chase and Ember!
This prompts the acolyte, who chants "Let us feel Her power!" as he throws a spray a glittering particles into the air. These swirl around and settle on Chon, Look, and Mok!
Buoyed by this benediction, Mok kicks at Chase and punches at Ember!
Despite his best efforts, however, the enemy monk misses both marks!

Lyrel stabs Look; the enemy monk grunts as the blade sinks in.
Look takes 5 piercing damage!

Myrtha charges up to stand protectively by the battered young cleric, Arya. "Stand back, Mother Arkon!" Myrtha stabs at Chon, but the monk dodges the blow.

Inspired by her warrior companion, Arya attacks Chon with her warhammer. The war god strengthens her limbs and speeds her movements, so she attacks again as a bonus action! But she is losing blood, barely able to stand, and the monk is too fast for the heavily-armored woman.

Ferranzo mocks Chon: "Monk? You’re more like a monkey, based on the smell. Better close that ugly robe or you’ll step on your own tail. Was that your banana by the door, Screechy?" and then he calls encouragement (Bardic Inspiration) to the young priestess Arya: "Send him back to his tree mates!"
Chon takes 1 psychic damage and his next attack will be with DISADV!

Eugenios feels an instant dislike of the acolyte; the gnome draws his magic together and extends his hand toward the man, snapping his fingers. A mid-sized glowing green flower appears upon Eugenios’ fingers, but as it extends toward the acolyte, the man's magic redirects the investigator's ire toward a nearby monk. The flower spits forth a sickly sweet smelling gas directly at Chon...
Chon chokes on the gas, taking 4 poison damage!

"It figures they'd be associated with Her," spits Aanbo, distaste in his words as he moves to intercept Look and support Lyrel. "Their heads are always in the clouds and never grounded in reality!"

The Earthshaker disciple readies his quarterstaff and thrusts it for Look's hip, and follows it up with a sweeping kick at the ankles.
OOC:

Round one, continued...

Morton draws upon the power of the Fiend and looses another blast from the pits of hell!
Mok takes 2 force damage!
Morton ducks out of sight behind the tree trunk.

"It figures they'd be associated with Her," spits Aanbo, distaste in his words as he moves to attack Look with staff and kick. "Their heads are always in the clouds and never grounded in reality!" The staff takes Look in the hip and Aanbo's kick hits Look in the ankle, almost sending him toppling!

Shocked at the intense attack on Arya, Ferranzo insults Chon with Vicious Mockery. "Monk? You’re more like a monkey, based on the smell. Better close that ugly robe or you’ll step on your own tail. Was that your banana by the door, Screechy?"

The halfling moves to put a column between Chon and himself, then cheers on Arya. "Send him back to his tree mates!"

@Mathfuric - No, I'll roll. But Eugenios is discovering that the acolyte has Sanctuary cast on himself. Roll a WIS saving throw to continue the attack, DC12. If it's a failure, Eugenios has to target someone else - Chon if Eugenios moved closer to the acolyte, Mok if he didn't.

Lyrel stabs Look; the enemy monk grunts as the blade sinks in.
Look takes 5 piercing damage!

Arya attacks Chon with her warhammer.

Round two
(this is preceded by round one, followed by round three)

Remaining single-minded on the idea of beating down the wizard, Look attacks Lyrel twice.
Look's balance is thrown off by all the hits he's taken, but his second kick stomps solidly on Lyrel's chest, lifting her up slightly and knocking the wind out of her.
Lyrel takes 5 bludgeoning damage!

Morton steps back into view from behind the tree trunk and opens himself to the Fiend once more. The searing heat rolls down Morton's arm and explodes out of his palm, blasting a shockwave across the sanctuary toward one of the evil monks...but the attack goes wide!

Aanbo demonstrates Earthshaker superiority; even as the human monk Look is dodging his staff, Aanbo lunges in, connecting with the man's chest with a solid palm strike.
Look takes 4 bludgeoning damage and staggers, gasping!

Chase attempts to stab Mok while his focus is divided, by the monk assailant undulates around the blade with each swing.

Sensing his target has little stamina remaining, Chon attacks Arya, but his confidence has been shaken by the ridicule he's endured. Getting back into the rhythm of the Windreaper forms, Chon follows this up with a series of fist strikes...but Myrtha is there, adding her shield to Mother Arkon's defense, and none of the blows connect with the reeling cleric.

Taking advantage of Mok's focus on Chase, Ember perforates the enemy monk with a stab in the back!
Mok takes 12 piercing damage!

The acolyte says "It will be easier for you once you just accept that life with Her is better. See the light!" He casts Sacred Flame on Arya, but Pelor grants her the insight to step out of the path of the beam of searing light that shines down from the ceiling of the sanctuary. "We don't want to hurt you, but we have to if you don't come willingly to Her arms. Don't worry, though: She accepts you even if you're damaged."

Mok kicks back at Ember as he punches with both fists at Chase.
Ember takes 7 bludgeoning damage!
Chase takes 5 bludgeoning damage!

Lyrel lunges past Aanbo and sinks her short sword up under Look's ribs.
Look takes 8 damage and dies!
https://i.imgur.com/QYy1a2m.png

"Take that one alive!" Myrtha shouts to the room, nodding her head behind her at the acolyte without taking her eyes off of the monk in front of her. She stabs and batters at Chon, but the monk blocks or dodges each swing. "We need him to tell us where they keep their captives!"

Arya nods. With no energy left to pray for more powerful boons (out of spell slots), she sees the wisdom in neutralizing her counterpart, the acolyte. Besides, her blood seethes with the war god's passion for victory, and the acolyte just called on some unholy power to sear her as if she was some evil, unclean thing. Her full lips compress in a thin line and her almond-shaped soulful brown eyes narrow in fury. "I'll show you that the brides of Pelor are not to be roused!" Still shapely under all that armor, Arya rolls her shoulders and tightens her grip on her huge warhammer as she steps toward the acolyte and away from Chon, confident that the other warrior woman, her "big sister" Myrtha, will watch her back. But Chon makes an attempt to hit her anyway. Myrtha's shield interposes, but Chon steps up off the shield, jumps, and spins - classic Windreaper style - and his other foot kicks over Myrtha's shield and catches Arya in the back of the head!
Arya takes 4 bludgeoning damage and flips over onto her face, dying again!

https://i.imgur.com/2bGmuJp.png

"Who? Orc-face over there?" Ferranzo is having a hard time focusing on the acolyte for some reason - his eyes keep slipping off of him to focus on one of the monks - but as he moves closer to the tree trunk that has incongruously been used as a column, he forces himself to keep his eyes on the man. "I'm talking to you, flea brain. Sir ‘too weak to fight’ is only useful as a greeter. Basically an ugly doormat. Cowardly but not smart enough to run. That’s an unfortunate combination for him."
The acolyte takes 1 psychic damage and will have DISADV if he attacks before the end of his turn next round.

Eugenios saunters over to stand by the door, fingering a rose petal drawn from a pouch.
The acolyte's eyes flutter and close. Then he slumps to the ground, fast asleep.

Slightly hidden Morton worries as the battle appears to intense. They knew we were coming right now. This is all too prepared.

Seeing how that priest's casting is hurting us, attacking Morton tries to disrupt him and fails badly. Boy, casting Morton can smell a lot of suffer. Dang did that ever backfire.

WanderOne says:

OOC:
@WanderOne - No, you choose the target.
The way I like to think about it is that Sanctuary makes the attacker sort of forget about the original target, but the attacker isn't controlled by the caster nor does the attacker lose any intent to attack their enemies. The only time that you'd lose out is if there weren't any other targets you wanted Morton to attack; in that situation, you'd either have to attack an ally, an inanimate object, or just lose the spell. Luckily, in this circumstance, it's a cantrip AND there are other enemies that Morton can target!
Without moving, Chon makes the most sense as a different target, but with a step Morton could target Look instead.

With regards to the attack rolls, no, as a general rule we should use the same rolls for attack and damage, particularly in a play-by-post game. Every additional roll in PbP extends the length of each game turn; I try to keep the game moving at as good a pace as I can. I really appreciate how you've been including your rolls with every post; it really speeds things up!

You can still hit the target that is protected by Sanctuary, it just takes an extra step. Sanctuary lasts for a minute, and it's only been a bit more than 6 seconds since the fighting began...how long was the conversation before the fighting began? As the only one in the party who knows the details of Sanctuary, Arya is trying to calculate how much longer it could last...it might not have ended yet.
rpgventurer says:
Vicious Mockery DC 13.
OOC:
Are you casting this on the acolyte, or one of the two living monks? We'll need that DC12 WIS saving throw if it's the acolyte, because (it turns out) it hasn't quite ended yet.

Round two, continued...

He quickly races across the room keeping mindful away from evil Chon in the process to traverse to his Arya. He seems like a monk for as fast as he moves with his wood elven heritiage. He has surely already drawn out his needed healer's pack on the way.

At least this time, her arms and legs aren't thrown out in odd directions and no undead to chase away. Seems she is rather accident prone.

Again it is going to take time for rousing her. The scent of suffer will disapate by then as she receives it from him. He seems to have that trademark scent often. She still looks sweet even wrapped in bandages again.

Demonic Morton holds her exceptinally close and protecively as he hazel eyes watch the priest and Chon for hostile moves toward her. He is ready to be her personal body shield if needed. His wishing thoughts that he tries to avoid about Chon as whispers encourage him. He struggles not to let it take over his actions.

Aanbo steps up next to Ember, thrusting with the staff and following up with a series of kicks. Mok is able to dodge all of these moves, but while he is thus occupied, the Earthshaker dwarf touches the human rogue and healing ki flows into her body.
Ember regains 5 HP.

Hoping the distraction from Aanbo will help him land his blow, Chase thrusts at Mok with his short sword, but the Windreaper monk seems to have eyes in the back of his head, and evades the blow. Chase sheathes his weapon and steps into the room, pulling his bow from where it is slung across his chest. As he does so, Mok jumps and kicks at him. The Windreaper style seems to favor head strikes; the monk's foot connects with Chase's head, leaving his ears ringing.

Myrtha manages to whack Chon with the butt of her spear and then, while he's slightly off-balance, she flips the spear around and plunges the point into his thigh.
Chon takes 8 piercing damage!
Myrtha exhales and inhales slowly and steadily while she fights, filling her lungs and holding it to oxygenate her blood and slow her heart rate.
Myrtha regains 8 HP using Second Wind!

Arya lolls, insensate, in Morton's arms.

Chon takes another 1 psychic damage and will have DISADV on the next attack he makes!

Morton reluctantly sets the unconscious Arya down again, then stands up, moving away from his crush while glaring at the Merikkan monk Chon. His rage boils over into another call to the Fiend, sending another concussion at the man. "Die, you scud!" He gestures mockingly to the monk. "Take me!"

There's no point cursing at the monk's swirling and dancing motions, she knows. It will just take more perseverance, but these fools will soon be dead. Gritting her teeth, she follows Chon, making sure to stand next to Morton and provide him with a protective shield. Taking her time, she sways and swerves before trying to strike at the monk with her spear once again.

Aanbo clobbers Mok with his staff, but the Windreaper monk avoids his kicks.
Mok takes 7 non-lethal bludgeoning damage!

As Mok sways from that hit, Ember stabs him again with a swift rapier strike.
Mok takes 11 piercing damage!
As the blood sprays, Aanbo rolls his eyes and sighs; is no one listening to him?

Mok staggers, but continues to be focused on Lyrel with her flaming sword. Her teeth clack together as a punch connects with her chin.
Lyrel takes 4 bludgeoning damage!

Lyrel continues her dance of the flaming blade with Mok. It sure looks impressive how the green flames draw a curtain of flame before Mok's face. It doesn't hit him, but it continues to draw his attention.

Myrtha follows Chon, worried that Morton is taking a big risk by drawing the monk's ire but grateful that the warlock has occupied the monk's attention long enough for her to plunge her spear into his back.
Chon takes 7 piercing damage and dies impaled on Myrtha's magic spear.

Arya remains slumped on the tiles, her formerly-flawless olive skin pale in the lamplight.

Hurt Morton noticed his full plan didn't process the way he totally expected but did gladly managed to take out evil Chon which was the true goal and stopped monk Chon for taking out protective Myrtha and avenged precious Arya. He can ponder later if that was really brave or foolish.

Dominic Morton is feeling his tender ribs where mean Chon fully tried to break a few of them with his powerful foot action. "We need to leave this place. Pronto" With thoughts that Arya needs time to recover.

Still minorly protective of Arya, guarding Morton moves (15') up toward the other monk Mok and again unleashes his favored demonic powers but he has paid too much attention to downed Arya while moving up protectively and his focused aim is rather foiled. Little bit of suffer in the air is all mostly happened and badly injured monk Mok survives longer.

Mok is concerned; nothing She ever said involved his odor. He has always taken great pains on maintaining his personal hygiene; were people really talking about him behind his back?

"What a fucking disgrace!" the warrior exclaimed as she assessed the bloody mess around her, she withdrew the broad-sheaf steel tip of the spear from Chon’s lifeless body. Blood everywhere, Arya barely clinging to life, Lyrel badly beaten, Morton too.

"Let’s tie this smirking arsehole real good," she continued, trying to avoid Aanbo’s eyes. She felt that she’d failed: she had lost her temper after Chon had hit her hard, and rather than knocking the man down, had delivered a lethal blow. Ashamed and angry, she lashed out uselessly.

She moved to help Eugenios tie the acolyte. Caring for the wounded wasn’t her field of expertise. Killing was, definitely.

Ferranzo is shaken by fury of the combat, but he's satisfied that he at least seemed to be helpful. "I'm new to you all and new to this kind of fighting, but I think we should keep moving. We're inside now and if we can just find and rescue prisoners, that's good enough for me. My cousin is counting on me... I just know it."

"By the way, I can do a healing spell, but then I won't have an attack if we need it. Your call."

Eugenios looks around as the final Monk falls, his eyes darting to all the entrances to the hall. The Elf Sorcerer had a point this seemed to be a planned defensive action, maybe they had been spotted upon entry. He put his dagger away and waited to someone to assist him with the sleeping Acolyte. "I have a feeling you are right , they did seem ready, but to disengage now would put us at a greater disadvantage and would give them time to destroy evidence or move anyone they may have imprisoned. I have a spell or two I can utilise, so I vote we move on." He looks at the group, "Maybe a short delay may work in our favour, time builds tension and indiscipline."

Eugenios will search the acolyte as he is tied up.

Chase and Myrtha hog tie the acolyte, using another 6' of rope (Myrtha has 19' of rope remaining), holding him down as he comes awake. Eugenios searches the man as he struggles against his bonds with wide-eyed fear. Aside from his robe and sandals, the man has some prayer beads around his neck. His left arm has been branded with the spiral symbol high up on his biceps; the scar has mostly healed, suggesting either that he was healed with magic (the livid spear puncture scar on both sides of unconscious Arya's neck looks somewhat similar, though not as raised as the man's scar) or that he was burned weeks ago.

Eugenios forces the struggling man down and saws at his clothing, cutting off the sleeve of his robe to get an unobstructed view of the captive's mutilated biceps. Ignoring the man's terrified pleas, the gnomish investigator unrolls a sheaf of parchment papers, finds one that isn't already full of notes, and begins to sketch the spiral symbol. The statue is solid green jade, carved into the likeness of a beautiful matronly woman holding a sheaf of grain stalks in one arm and a sickle in the other. She has been fashioned to be about the size of an adult elf, perhaps two paces tall. She may once have been painted, but now she's just smooth green jade. Luckily, the sculptor exaggerated her feminine features so that she reads as a mother rather than a green blob even without contrasting colors. There's plenty of handholds making it an easy climb for Ferranzo to clamber up and tie the torn sleeve around the head of the statue. Morton can't help but assess the resale value of such a piece of art.

The open door to the west is the one the acolyte used; the open door to the east is the one the monks used. Chase gestures to the eastern door as he rummages in the monks' blood-stained robes: "Should we go through where the monks came from?" These were apparently ascetics with no earthly attachments, as their bodies have nothing on them other than the clothes they wore, not even weapons. Either they were ascetics, or they left in a hurry and their belongings are someplace else.

"This temple was ready to battle us because they already seek to do harm," says Aanbo, pointing at the acolyte's spiral symbol. "Remember how we needed proof that none of us was part of this cult? Remember how this man and those guards were marked; they are dedicated to Her, and others with the same mark will pretend they are your friend while they ready the knife for your back."

As if to remind everyone about past encounters, Aanbo continues, "The innkeeper of the Golden Grain and the bard Jonbon both pretended to be friendly while they poisoned our food. The Constable of Orlane pretends to be the town's protector while he aims his sword for your throat. This priest and these monks pretended to welcome us, but wanted to beat us into submission. It no longer matters if the temple knows we are here, they've shown time and time again that they are always ready to strike."

To further confirm his suspicions, Aanbo checks for the presence of the spiral symbol on the monks' bodies.
Dec 31, 2025 7:33 am
It is not obvious at first, because they are not branded or tattooed, but the dead monks DO bear scabbed wounds that, if you squint just right, might resemble the familiar spiral. It seems someone with an unsteady hand cut them. Did they do it to themselves? Why weren't they branded or given pendants like the others?

Before stepping away from the Temple’s main area, Myrtha stops silently for long moments, whether overtaken by confusion or grief it is difficult to tell. After Aanbo reveals the scarification of the monk’s bodies, something stirs within her, and she moves to the tied acolyte. Placing her broad leafed spearhead next to his throat she removes his gag slowly and quietly, whispering "Not a sound until you are told to answer a question, understood?"

She then points with her free hand at the monks’ corpses. "Who engraved Her symbol in their flesh, you?"

And after he’s responded to that question, she’ll follow up with a second query: "Where is your superior? She came out earlier. Is she here," she asked pointing at the door from where the acolyte had come. Aanbo walks past the badly-injured Lyrel and kneels by the fallen Arya Arkon. The dwarven monk feels around under the chain mail and stimulates Arya's chi, prompting accelerated healing.
Mother Arkon regains 5 HP.
As she regains consciousness and sits up, the heroes can see that her latest near-death experience has left Arya somewhat wall-eyed. This, the crooked head, the broken nose, and the livid scar on her neck: all together they are common signs of an experienced adventurer. "Thank you," she breathes to the dwarf, one eye looking at him. She climbs unsteadily to her feet. "Pelor still has need of me, I see."

Ember does some quick calculation in her head, based on past experiences with fencing art. With time to find a buyer in a large metropolitan area like Hookhill, she figures she could probably clear more cash than she's ever seen on one sale. The acolyte has taken a fatalistic view of his situation: these murderers are surely going to kill him, but they themselves will someday soon become allies. Eugenios has seen this with interrogations in the past: a scared captive is unreliable, but a resigned captive tends to be honest.
So when Myrtha asks "Not a sound until you are told to answer a question, understood?" the acolyte nods.
Myrtha asks, "Who engraved Her symbol in their flesh? You?"
"No!" the temple functionary responds, seemingly genuinely shocked. "Each person chooses for themselves. I'm happy to craft a sign of dedication for anyone, but these three? They marked themselves."

Myrtha asks her next question: "Where is your superior? She came out earlier. Is she here," (pointing west) "or there?" (pointing east)
The junior cleric would have shrugged if his arms weren't pulled painfully back to his feet behind him. "She came in there," he says, flicking his eyes to the west door, "and told me to greet you adventurers. Then she continued on to the monks' cells. They probably came through the hidden door in the hall of statues." He flicks his eyes and jerks his chin toward the east door.

Morton dogs Arya's heels, following her through the doorway. Just as she's describing it to the others, he sees it for himself. It is a long corridor with a gleaming white tiled floor that seems to stretch the whole length of the Temple. The long wall facing them is lined with ten black-velvet-lined alcoves; each alcove has a shelf also lined with black velvet. Magical light illuminates the contents of these shelves: gold items fashioned to resemble different plants or plant products (seeds, roots, and fruit). A closed door stands at the end of the hall to the south. To the north, the passage turns west around a corner.

"I would consider taking a moment." Morton advises, and Arya stops, nodding. She turns to look at him, her head slightly tilted as if listening to something, one almond-shaped eye gazing deeply into his, the other looking to the side. "Yes, let's wait for the others."

Seeing the western door partially opened, Myrtha will move north and then west, so as to follow the western wall southwards, until she reaches the door. Once there she will quickly look inside, taking cover behind the western wall if she spots any movement or person inside. If she sees no one within, she will gently close that door, before rejoining the others. If she spots anyone, she will raise the alarm.
OOC:
I'm basically concerned that if the priestess is just behind this door, listening to all our plans, she will step outside as soon as we've left the main room, untie the acolyte, and either (a) follow us and attack from behind or (b) escape the temple complex, run to town and bring an army of cultists back to overwhelm us.
Jan 5, 2026 2:53 pm
Aanbo considers the situation as he follows Myrtha to check the western area. "Whatever we decide to do, we must move quickly. We've left the courtyard gates closed when they're normally open, and we've also closed the temple doors. While we heard that morning services are rare since everyone's usually working the fields, there's still a chance someone might notice that things are different and might investigate."
Jan 6, 2026 12:36 am
"We should try and bar the outside doors." Chase will move quickly to secure the doors and then head over and check where the monks came from.
Jan 6, 2026 5:28 am
While he waits for instructions from his companions, Ferranzo will inspect the north wall between the jade statue and the northeast corner.
OOC:
If the brownish section is a tapestry, he will look behind it.

While Chase confirms that the front doors are still barred, Myrtha and Aanbo sneak over to the open western door. Peering through the opening, they see a lush carpet in the middle of the floor, and a wooden case with abnormally-large crop harvest items displayed like trophies.

Ferranzo peers behind the tapestry in the northeast of the sanctuary; behind the woven fabric is flat granite blocks like the rest of the walls.

Arya and Morton wait patiently for the others.

Eugenios gags the Acolyte again, tapping him on the head a couple of times. "Don’t go anywhere, I am sure we’ll be back to check on you." He says with a wink before standing and following Myrtha and Aanbo. He waits patiently to get a peek through the door . . .
Jan 6, 2026 3:09 pm
Eugenios replaces the gag with the ease of one who has spent long days interrogating captives in the Niole Dra guard dungeons. Then the gnome Special Investigator dusts off his hands and joins Aanbo and Myrtha at the door. Though Myrtha was prepared to close the door, Eugenios and the Earthshaker monk step through to take a closer look.

A closed door leads off to the south, the display case in on the western wall, and to the north the room wraps around a corner behind the sanctuary to the east. There stands a large dining table with chairs; a lamp or some other steady light must be sitting on the table, for it is well-lit.

Ferranzo joins Morton and Arya in the hallway of golden statues.

Aanbo moves over the thick carpet and peers around the corner: the dining table continues for most of the length of the room. A lamp provides illumination from near the center of the table. Another closed door leads east from the far wall of the room, some 60 paces from the monk. Chase enters the room behind him next to Eugenios.

Lyrel opens the nearest door and looks inside. She is relieved to not be attacked immediately; though she has her magical protection, she is very aware of how hurt she is. The room is not lit, but her elven eyes see three plain wooden benches in the space. The room may continue further west, but the view is blocked by a curtain of heavy, rich blue fabric.

Ember stands there next to the struggling acolyte writhing on the floor, trying not to think about how much money that jade statue would be worth.

Myrtha nods in agreement. We either continue eastward, hoping to rejoin the others, or return to the main hall, and rejoin them that way. The southern door in the west halls bugged her however, and she remained indecisive a little longer.
OOC:
A couple of questions :
- How hard would it be to drag the hog-tied acolyte around with us in this kind of flat flooring?
- The door to the south in the western side of the building, does it seem particularly decorated, or reinforced in any way, or more like a service/standard door?

Eugenios's words give Aanbo enough realization to discover that the party has split. "We should stay together," he states, perhaps unnecessarily airing the obvious. "Perhaps the risk of someone sneaking up behind us can be mitigated if we have the numbers. And if a wayward priest escapes to sound the alarm... well, we're already trying to push through to the source of the evil. I'd rather be in a larger group than get separated and isolated."

Aanbo gives his immediate companions some time to complete any investigation, but urges not to spend too long getting caught up in something not immediately helpful to their goal. Whatever that goal may be.
OOC:
Aanbo will ignore the dining room and its doors so that the west group can leave and join those in the east hallway. Unless someone makes a compelling reason for the eastern group to join the west?
Jan 7, 2026 5:14 pm
Ember enters the dining room, joining Myrtha, Chase, Eugenios, and Aanbo.

"Not to be Captain Obvious, but we will walk into the others if we head around that way Aanbo. So we maybe herding anyone back here towards them." Eugenios hazards his guess regarding the interior layout of the Temple. Myrtha nods in agreement, stepping into the room to look around. She peers suspiciously at the door leading south from the dining room.
matmaisan says:

- How hard would it be to drag the hog-tied acolyte around with us in this kind of flat flooring?
- The door to the south in the western side of the building, does it seem particularly decorated, or reinforced in any way, or more like a service/standard door?
OOC:
Even with ropes, dragging the acolyte around would be very cumbersome and/or would dislocate his arms, depending on where you pulled. The floor in the Sanctuary is a large mosaic, remember: dragging him there would shred his clothes at a minimum, and might lead to even more of a blood trail (in addition to the blood from all the killed monks). If you want to keep him with the party, it would be easier for one of the strongest adventurers - Arya, Chase, or Myrtha - to just carry him.
The southern door seems functional, with no ornamentation, reinforcement, or decoration to distinguish it from any of the other interior doors she's seen so far.
Eugenios moves to the display case, reassures himself that there are no traps, and opens it to examine the trophies. There is a bottle of wine, and a collection of the largest produce he has ever seen: a carrot larger than his leg, an ear of corn that is nearly the same size as his torso, and a sheaf of tall wheatstalks the length of Myrtha's spear with grains as large as grapes. During the last few days at the Inn of the Slumbering Serpent, Eugenios had heard farmers boast of their crops, but he had dismissed their accounts as the usual tall tales that one gets in rustic backwaters like this. But these items that he's handling now? They are real produce, and lend a great deal of credence to the farmers' claims. Whatever else is going on here, this community does seem to be blessed by Merikka, the goddess of the harvest, after all.

Chase sneaks up to the southern door that is the object of Myrtha's scrutiny and listens at it. He hears no sound from the other side.

"We should stay together," Aanbo affirms, stepping back to keep an eye on both arms of the L-shaped dining room. "Perhaps the risk of someone sneaking up behind us can be mitigated if we have the numbers. And if a wayward priest escapes to sound the alarm... well, we're already trying to push through to the source of the evil. I'd rather be in a larger group than get separated and isolated."

Lyrel peers behind the blue curtain cautiously at first, but, seeing no one there, takes a more detailed look. The other half of the room is lushly decorated, with a rich woven carpet, three comfortable chairs placed around a low table, and a sideboard with six crystal glasses and a wine rack holding several wine bottles. It's a space designed for comfort: probably either intended for serious meetings with village officials or just luxurious breaks for the Temple staff. There are no other obvious exits.

Willing to take it slow, Morton watches Arya as she begins to move north, her shield casting Light to augment the dim magical lighting that is causing the golden statues to glitter in their alcoves. The long corridor with the gleaming white floor and the ten black-velvet-lined alcoves containing those golden statues stretches before them. The closed door stands at the end of the hall to the south. Arya begins making her way north, away from Morton and Ferranzo and toward where the passage turns west around the corner. "If we're looking for a secret door, it has to be this way," she reasons, "...if what that guy said is true."

Not being equipped with a mirror, Arya is completely unaware of the condition of her eyes. So when Morton makes his veiled reference to her condition, it goes over her tilted head. Instead, she nods and responds to Ferranzo: "I'll wait." She looks at the gold statues; the closest one to her is a cluster of three root vegetables, painstakingly rendered in intricate detail. Though the work is exquisite, because it's all gold, it's impossible to tell exactly what kind of food it is: beets? radishes? turnips? Arya muses: "What do you think these guys want? Yes, they're abducting people to kill or convert them, but what is it all for?" She points to the root statue: "They're not doing it for money; they've left all these gold statues alone, and we saw how they were stashing the belongings of the people they took, rather than spending it. If they were against Merikka, you'd think they would deface the Temple, but everything here seems untouched. Do they just want more people? What for? I don't understand it."
Jan 9, 2026 9:32 am
Myrtha nods, agreeing with Aanbo’s words. "Let us regroup then," she whispered, looking at Chase, Ember and Eugenios, "we’ve got a better idea of what’s on this side of the Temple, let’s see if the others have found this concealed passage," she stated, starting to walk to the door she had just entered from.
OOC:
Brief question on the architecture of the temple: are the double doors of the entrance set roughly in the center of that facade of the building? These western chamber seem at least 10ft wider than the eastern corridor, so there ought to be a passage behind all those alcoves… also, we’ve established that there isn’t a single window in all the perimeter wall, correct?

Jan 9, 2026 6:22 pm
Ferranzo ponders Arya’s questions. "Some say the gods derive their powers from the number of devoted worshippers. Perhaps the priestess is so fanatical she is trying to force the number up and crossed the line into theft and kidnapping."

"It could even be a criminal gang behind all this turmoil, using the church as a front for their activities."

Jan 9, 2026 10:44 pm
Aanbo begins to reconvene with the others. As he nears Chase, the warden's words make perfect sense and he assist the grisly task of taking the bodies out of plain sight.
Jan 10, 2026 4:11 am
As Myrtha suggests the party regroup, Chase opens the door and peers inside. There is no light within, so he is only able to see part of the room, and that dimly. But it appears to be a kitchen: ovens line the far wall, cabinets the wall on his right. A small table stands in the middle of the room. The other half of the room is in darkness.

Aanbo joins him, and together the monk and ranger grab the bloody corpses of the monks and carry them into the kitchen. Aanbo can see what Chase cannot: the rest of the kitchen is much like the part Chase saw: more cupboards line the walls. It's a bigger kitchen than seems necessary for the few people they've met so far, but then they might host larger events for the community on holy days: a harvest festival or something similar. There are no windows, and as long as no parishioners show up and notice the blood, there's no reason to think anyone would stumble across them there. It doesn't seem like anyone else is on this floor of the building...unless they're behind that other door Aanbo saw to the north.
matmaisan says:
are the double doors of the entrance set roughly in the center of that facade of the building?
OOC:
Yes, Myrtha knows that the double doors were in the exact middle of the southern wall of the Temple. The doors are directly south of the first tree trunk in the Sanctuary. Myrtha may not realize it, but you players see that that tree trunk at the exact east-west midpoint. There is no room for anything beyond the alcoves to the east; they are flush against the outer wall of the temple building. There are no windows anywhere in the Temple.

"Gaining followers, huh?" Arya muses in response to Ferranzo, "I suppose that makes sense." At Morton's request, she waits with ill-disguised impatience.

"What do we do about him?" Aanbo asks, jabbing a thumb over his shoulder at the bound acolyte. "We could knock him out and leave him in this room with the bodies and limit the chances of discovery. I doubt we'll gain anything by taking him with us; our experiences with most of these fanatics is that they'd rather die than help us."
Jan 10, 2026 6:43 pm
"Maybe tie him to something solid so he can't move?"
Jan 11, 2026 4:08 pm
Lyrel discovers that the bottles contain "Orlanian Special Wine." Not being from the area and only having been in the village of Orlane for less than a day, she doesn't know whether that's something sinister or something prestigious. But she's smart, and figures that it is legitimately a special vintage; one wouldn't advertise a drugged wine by writing it on the label.

She takes a few moment and performs a search so thorough it would have done Eugenios proud: checking for false bottoms in the furniture, rifling through the cushions on the chairs, checking for trap doors under the carpet...however, she finds nothing else hidden or out of the ordinary.

Then she follows the voices and joins Myrtha, Eugenios, Ember, Chase, and Aanbo in the dining room, where they are looking through the door at the bound acolyte struggling on the floor of the sanctuary. Across the sanctuary, they can see Morton and Ferranzo in the open door to the hall of statues.

Chase has suggested binding the hog-tied captive to something solid; the party looks around for likely candidates that aren't the tree trunks or huge jade statue in the sanctuary....if anyone were to enter the sanctuary (someone coming from elsewhere in the Temple, since no one can come in from outside with the entrance doors already barred), they'd see the bound-and-gagged acolyte immediately. The ovens in the kitchen, perhaps? They're not fixed to the floor, but they are solid and heavy enough that one person wouldn't be able to move them.
Jan 13, 2026 5:52 am
After an extended period of indecision, the party agrees to drag the bound-and-gagged acolyte into the kitchen and tie him to the leg of one of the cast-iron ovens. Having done this (and resolved to not explore the one unopened door leading off of the dining room), the bulk of the party joins Morton, Ferranzo, and Arya in the hall of statues. The golden sculptures of different harvest items gleam and glitter in their alcoves. To the north, the passage turns west. To the south, the passage ends in a door.

As they left the dining room and headed across the sanctuary to join the others, Chase commented "I wonder if they started sacrificing strangers for crop production somehow?"
Eugenios responded: "I had been thinking the same thing. It is a well-known fact that blood and bone make great fertilizer, especially with vegetables and fruit."
Being just a few paces away, Arya hears this interchange. As the group enters the hall of statues, Mother Arkon interjects: "But Olpert and others have told us that Orlane has always been known for its exceptional produce. We Dungeon Busters were originally sent here to find out why the shipment of vegetables and fruit stopped. I suspect the big produce came from the harvest goddess, and the stopping is because of this cult." She looks at Eugenios. "You couldn't have known why most of us were sent here, of course. I don't remember if you said how long you've been here. Did anybody in town talk about crop failures or blight or anything?"

Ferranzo moves south to the door and listens; he hears nothing on the other side. Morton follows and stands protectively near Arya.

Aanbo keeps an alert vigil.

Eugenios has noticed the golden statues and his attention is entirely focused on these new pieces of information. He approaches cautiously, examines the closest alcove from several angles. The statue it contains - a large and juicy bunch of grapes - is untarnished, exquisitely wrought, life-size (albeit very large, much like the real fruit in the dining room), and very valuable. This in itself is a mystery; why would the cultists occupy this Temple and not claim these treasures? Eugenios is unaware of the fact that the party has discovered that the cult is hoarding wealth taken from captured or killed victims, but if he were aware of this fact, he'd be even more puzzled. Perhaps the jade statue in the Sanctuary is too unwieldy to be carried off and so public to be missed, but these golden statues are hidden in a side hall and are much smaller. They could be carried away. Why haven't the cultists done so?

This whole time, the entire rest of the party has been watching the gnome do this, and no one says anything to him to inform or warn him.

Wondering if perhaps they are not real, Eugenios touches the golden grapes statue with the intent of moving it to see if there's a trigger for a trap or a secret door. There isn't, but he feels a powerful lurch as something surges through him. He doesn't know what has happened, but he has a queasy bad feeling about it.
