Aanbo will knock upon the door to the building and wait for acknowledgement before daring to identify himself in a whisper. Best not surprise his heavily-armed companions with a sudden intrusion, especially since he himself is on edge and alert in such close proximity to their target. He checks over his shoulder for any other unusual or suspicious activity.

Silence is golden. Ferranzo turns his back to the prisoners. He nods at Myrtha and holds up his right index finger in front of his chest, indicating one more.
Nov 21, 2025 5:41 am
Aanbo approaches the door, where Lyrel - who is keeping watch in the doorway - sees him and nods.

Eugenios moves closer to the group and addresses the speaker guard in a calm, controlled voice similar to that a father would use when explaining something to a child. "As my wise colleague points out, why is it that so many followers of a Chaotic God would change to one of Law and protection? And for them to put you in a position to watch over the flock." The Wizard’s eyes not straying as he waits an answer.
Nov 21, 2025 6:27 pm
"Answer my friend," Myrtha added, emphasising Eugenios' question. She nodded at Ferranzo, happy to hear he might still have the retired power to put the second group of guardsmen to sleep.
Nov 21, 2025 6:33 pm
Aanbo takes a moment to listen and gauge where the group is in the conversation. He leans over to Myrtha and whispers, "Wind God? What's the deal with all the snakes, then?"
When there's an appropriate time, he will report to his companions about the main entrance to the temple being the only visible access.

"It was something we did long ago, when we were young and rebellious. What better way to rebel than to reject the goddess?" the watchman sighs, his face still pressed into the floorboards. He groans a little as he tries to shift to a less-painful position: an impossibility. "We saw the error of our ways long ago, of course. "Now we all serve Her, and of course She is happy to have us work for the greater good. We're not the ones going around killing dogs and invading holy ground."
Aanbo only caught the tail end of this conversation, but he can tell that the watchman is lying in some aspect of his story. The fervor in his voice reminds the dwarf too much of Jonbon to be taken credulously.

Eugenios slides closer allowing the uncomfortable guard to see the smile and look of interest and pleasure at his predicament, "Tell me about her, and your love for her. I want to hear about her love for you." The Gnome has closed the gap on the elder guard now, placing his hand on the guard’s shoulder applying just enough pressure to making is slightly more difficult to catch one’s breath.

While all this is going on Chase will move out and bring the wolf bodies in so they won't be seen and clean up the ground as much as possible.

"I will head to the gate and do a lookout for trouble." Morton finds a fine spot to watch the gate area but fairly much out of sight while doing it.

While Eugenios slips comfortably into his bad cop routine, Chase exits and fetches first one wolf corpse and then the other. Dumping them on the floor, he stands as an imposing figure, covered in blood. Aanbo moves from companion to companion, whispering to each that the only obvious way into the Temple is through the door. Arya, relieved to focus on something other than incipient torture, nods her understanding. A bit less than an hour remains before dawn. The watchman wheezes, pressed into the floor.
Stationed at the door, Lyrel nods to the elf as he announces his intent to watch the entrances/exits. The wizard, having raised the possibility of a geas, turns over the nature of such magic compulsions in her mind. She knows that people under a geas cannot act against the commands of the caster, but she's not sure what could end a geas. The caster can stop a geas voluntarily, but would killing the caster also break the geas? She's not sure. Could there be other magic that produces a similar effect?
Morton leaves and finds a twisted, overgrown bush to hide behind. The grounds would have been lovely at one time in the past, but they've been badly neglected despite all the tools that Aanbo found in the other outbuildings. From his crouched position, Morton can easily see both the gate in the wall and the door in the Temple.

Gasping through the pain, his voice muffled by being pressed into the floor, the watchman keeps talking. "Strong or weak, high or low, She treats us all as equals. How else would I be treated the same as a rich innkeeper, a priest in charge of a flock, or an important foreigner with fierce eyes? There's room for all of you, too! She'd welcome you with open arms! We all would!"

"But you are abducting people by night, taking them against their will. That isn't a choice, it's slavery!"
Nov 24, 2025 5:33 am
Eugenios shifts his weight back onto his heels, pulling the guardsman up providing a little respite. "You haven’t said who ‘She’ is? What is your goddess names?" he asking in his fatherly voice.

"Slavery??!" The watchman is clearly offended at Ember's objection. "We all choose to love Her willingly! No one regrets their decision, right?" There is a chorus of grunting assent, muffled by sodden gags. It's clear that these people cannot recognize how they've been controlled, no matter how much evidence is presented to them. It's becoming clear to everyone what Lyrel has already understood: no amount of talking is going to change their minds. "Slavery? The idea is ridiculous. She brings freedom!"
"Ahh..." He sighs with relief when Eugenios removes his pressing hand. "Goddess...?" The watchman is clearly confused by the gnome's questions. "Oh, you must mean Merikka." He says the deity's name with clear derision. "Nobody cares about Merikka once they meet Her. She's so much better than some god. I forget sometimes how it is for people like you, who haven't met Her. Names are unimportant, trivial compared to the closeness you feel when you become one with Her. Gods are far away, but She is here and now, as real as you or me. She asks, merges, blends, gets to know you inside and out, closer than anyone you've ever known. Do you know what it feels like to be completely known, and accepted?" He giggles. "You will! Everyone will come to love Her eventually!"
It doesn't take much insight for Eugenios to realize that the man doesn't actually know "Her" name, and that he's not bothered by that ignorance.

Aanbo, catching the tail end of the interrogation, finds that nothing new has been revealed and that this cult remains as obfuscated as before. "It's clear we won't get good answers from the rank and file," he says. "Make sure they're comfortable, but kept quiet."

Do we believe we have time for a short rest? Or shall we head immediately for the temple doors?OOC:
Everyone knows that about an hour remains until dawn, which the earliest any of you would expect a guard shift. From their previous time spent in Orlane, however, Eugenios (the past few days) and Ferranzo (from many previous visits) both know that the Temple opens its doors to the public during the day; there aren't guards patrols during the day. The night guardsmen may be missed, but that shouldn't happen in less than an hour: enough time for a short rest if that groups wants to do that.

Myrtha shook her head with disappointment at the last round of questions and responses. Lyrel was right, these people had been put under some powerful charm and would not cough up any valuable information. She considered silently what the party's options were. They might take advantage of the ebbing night to strike the Temple with the remains of surprise. They could move out under cover of darkness, regroup and plan a raid at a different moment. Or they could breath for a few moments and then strike as soon as the temple doors were opened to the people of Orlane. Surprise supposed at least being able to slip through the Temple's doors without causing such a ruckus that all within could prepare to respond to their assault.
OOC:
I would lik to know what the other players, as players, think. Myrtha is awfully aware that they shouldn't be discussing in front of the prisoners. So before she articulates any tentative planning (and a smokescreen to our prisoners), I'd like to have an idea what you all are inclined to do...What are you inclined to do? Public
Strike while the iron's hot! Let's hit the temple now
Retreat and regroup! (We know more now, and those who want to leave to Hochoch can do so more easily)
At dawn we attack! (take a short rest, manage the prisoners, and go in as soon as the doors are opened)

@matmaisan,@Mathfuric,@WanderOne - how do you vote? Right now, the vote could go either to leaving to resupply/train/regroup or to short rest/enter the Temple. As soon as there is a clear winner, I'll continue in the direction of that choice.load next
