Vikram looks over Taylor's plans, trying to remember any past intel about the area that may be pertinent in their journey.

Once the route is finalzed, Vikram gears up. Outside of the essential items (backpack, rope, flashlight, canteen, a compass, etc) and standard issue weapons (survival knife, Colt 1911, Mk2 hand greandes) he spends most of his time filling his Boom! bag (a waterproof canvas bag nicknamed from his earliest days in the war). It hold blocks of C4 and TNT, non-electric blasting caps, galvanomoters, primacord, safety fuses, and even parts for a bangalore torpedo.

Satisfied it has everything he needs, he moves on to his general parts bag, a mish mash of random items that have come in handy over the years (rubber bands, chewing gum, duct tape, paperclips, etc)

And with that, he double ties the shoelaces of his hiking boots, tucks his khaki pants in, straightens his khaki shirt, and is ready to depart.

Bear opens one of the storage compartments of the jeep and pulls out his gear. He had a special made outfit ready for the jungle. The last thing that the scammer had actually come through with before taking all his money. He resented wearing it in a way, but now it came in handy. Might as well take advantage of it.

After donning the clothes, he grabs his backpack. Then he picks up his .30 cal ammo belt and slings it across his shoulder, followed by the M1919 browning machine gun. He holds it, inspecting how it's holding up after the bumpy ride so far.

He thinks back to when Taylor showed him the suggested route. It was going to be a touch one, but Bear was ready for it. He had made a few suggestions himself based on the terrain they were heading into. If there was anything Bear knew about, it surely was how to survive the wilderness. "That side of the hill's gan to be dangerous. Let's trot up 2 miles to here. It'll be dead better." He had told him.

Katya takes out all the gear in her backpack and spreads it out in a small space in the back the jeep. A small mixture of clothes, personal items, tools, hygiene supplies, sleepwear etc. One could assume that one could live outs of this bag, (and perhaps Katya already has). She lovingly packs everything back into the bag. Making sure everything is compact and secure. She sets aside the same set of light cotton blouse and trousers that she originally wore in the bar. She makes sure that her tool kit is on top of her bag, and that her sleeping bag, is nicely strapped to the back. That her pot and pan is easy to unstrap from the side, and that some spices and recipes she picked up in the various villages are in a water proof pocket

Once all that is done, she quickly changes. Straps her survival knife to her belt on her right side. And quickly field strips and cleans her Colt 1911 Defender, as well as restoring a bullet to her mag that Bear fired. She then straps on a beat up, shoulder holster so that it sits under her left shoulder.

She looks over the map that Taylor laid out. Vish I could help, but I don't know region and Jungle terrain is not my forte. I trust Bear suggestions though. I'll go look over spare parts ve got, so I have an inventory. She looks over at the obvious demolitions Vik has and seems lost in though I vonder...think there is some way we could rig some kind of bomb under da Jeep dat ve could release from the cab...no thats a ridiculous idea... She turns around to go back to the jeep and mutters under her breath Эх, нам бы самолёт (I wish we had a plane in Russian)

The jeeps edge their their way carefully along the planned route. At many times, progress slows to walking speed or a complete halt. Hours tick past.

The uninhabited area teems with wildlife. Gibbons swing in the forest. A leopard growls angrily and breaks cover as the jeep passes. Wild elephants watch curiously from the treeline. Much of the fauna is less picturesque. Snakes infest the jungle. Bodies of water hide hungry leeches. Flies, mosquitos and ticks abound.

The heat and humidity are oppressive. Even within a space of hours, sweat and scraping branches cause jungle sores. Simple nicks risk becoming infected.
OOC:

To cover the journey, characters must succeed on the 3 rolls listed for each. Sounds tough, but any raises can be carried forward (+1 for each) onto the next roll. The final roll for each character is always VIG, dealing with sheer hardship and the need to resist heat, infection, etc.

All rolls are TN5 (was TN6 knocked down by Bear's improvement of the plan)

Eketerina
1. driving 2. repair 3. VIG
Ek's main contribution will be driving as before, with repair to deal with frequent stalls, break-downs and flooding.

Bear
1. survival 2. athletics 3. VIG
Bear has to contribute brute force as well as survival skills, pushing the jeeps, and hacking a way forward (athletics) .

Vikram
1. repair 2. notice 3. VIG
Vikram helps with repairs and scouts out the way ahead.

Taylor
1. drive 2. healing (nicks, slat tablets, heat) 3. VIG
Taylor drives and is fairly adept at treating heat stroke, jungle rot, and minor cuts.

It's definitely not an easy route, but the group makes it work. Bear tries his best to help out, mostly with his brute strength. Although his survival insights are asked for every now and then as well.

"It isn't the heat getting to us, but this humidity." He answers Katya as he wipes sweat off his brow, which is soaked again not a second later.

"So close!" Taylor thinks when he sees that the expedition has run out of steam.

The party makes decent progress on its first day. But a night sleeping under mosquito nets saps their strength. The next day, the jungle, heat and humidity take their toll. The energy needed to push, dig and manhandle the jeeps dissipates. They manage to reach the telegraph line. Stretches of the track have become overgrown with thickets of bamboo. Hacking with machetes, bashing with the jeep, they make slow headway.

Taylor realises that they have reached a tipping point. Another mile, and the team will have run themselves ragged.

"Let’s stop right here while we still have strength. We’ll stay here tonight. And walk in tomorrow morning, taking only what we need."
OOC:

The rolls were pretty close! The difference between TN4 and TN5 is a biggie. Let’s give Vikram back his benny so he’s not spending it in vain.

Failing forward, we’ll say that the party make their destination on foot late the next day, carrying light supplies.

Please all make a normal TN4 stealth and notice roll as you approach the temple ruins. Notice at +2 if you have binoculars. Make an academics roll, too, if you wish to make sense of the ruins from sight.

As Vikram uses his binoculars to take a gander at the temples, Bear whispers to Katya "What were them used for?"

The whole trip Josey has been quiet, mulling over everything they had been though so far. He shook his head as he watched Bear lugging the machine gun. With the sun starting to disappear, Josey found himself being able to better focus and take more careful steps as he travelled along.

Katya takes some of the heavier things she can rebuy, that she doesn't think will be useful out of her bag, and leaves it securely in the back of the jeep, before taking the keys with her. She tries to memorize the landmarks, and relative direction compared to where they are going with the compass on her survival knife.

As she sees the temple, she gives a small wolf whistle and says... finally...dat is....smaller tan expected. And as they get closer and Bear whispers to her she shrugs and whispers back how should I know? I'm just a poor farmer's daughter, Mr. Noble Man.

At the edge of the temple complex, the party scout and observe carefully. Perhaps it is the evening light that helps them, or this is the team’s true skill, as they spot almost everything of note in the area.

— a machine gun has been set up in the stupa behind the temple*, with stones removed to form firing slits on each side
— there are a handful of people in the buildings. Two appear to be priests, one a local civilian , and two soldiers wearing (captured?) Japanese gear
—Bear realises that the folk in the ruins have somehow sensed their approach, without knowing their exact position. The two soldiers have entered the stupa where the machine gun is posted

Vikram realises that he knows a surprising amount about the temple. Much to his puzzlement, he sees that:

— the ruins resemble Hindu, rather than Buddhist remains. They must be very old, originating from an early period when Burma was more ‘Indianised’, influenced directly by Indian Hinduism.
— they are ornamented and inscribed with guardian symbols— sacred lions, winged moneys— that indicate guardianship and protection

Even Taylor, usually levelheaded, is overwhelmed by the amount of information collected.

"Who the hell are they? Locals, ya think? And they’ve seen us, Bear? Dammit."

" A machine gun? Probably a Jap ‘woodpecker’ if they have got hold of IJA gear. We could try to move up using the stupas as cover, but it is risky. Maybe one of us could go and talk?"

He also responds to Vikram’s report about the religious significance of the place.

"That figures. Let’s hope they are defending gold, rather than some old sacred scrolls…"
OOC:

*in the photo, the machine gun is set up at first (US = second) floor level , second stupa from the left.

The party rolled a lot of raises, so there’s a huge info dump in the post. Please have a good look over the points in case overload obscures important info.

Taylor has suggested walking up to parlay, but he’s not at his best and has only d4 in persuasion ( he is meant to be a gruff Lee Marvin type). So a player character might fare better, if that’s the chosen strategy.

If the plan is rather to sneak up to get closer, or to attack, use the photo above to indicate what your party sees… the temple is not especially small, just farther than it looks in the pic (the doorway is big, about 18’ in height).

I could go and pretend to be a damsel in distress, Bear might have to rough me up a bit so tey believe it more; act as a distraction. Or ve could do some kind of pincer attack on gun; I can help draw up a battle plan if ve do dat route. Or ve could go with Taylor's plans. Just presenting additional options. "Yeh, they know somethin's off alright..." Bear tells Taylor. "You can tell by their goin-ons."

"Sounds rather risky to us." He chimes in on the damsel in distress idea. "We ought to take out that gun first. Or stay out of sight of it, like." He looked at Vikram. "Reckon you can blow it up if we get close enough?"

He then turned to Josey. "Feelin better, pet?" Bear hadn't mentioned anything about Josey being 'out of it' but that didn't mean he hadn't noticed. He figured he was just car sick from all the swerving and the bumpy terrain.

Mulling the options over, Vikram chimes in "I'd prefer not to kill innocents or destroy ancient remnants if it can be avoided. Hard to tell if they're friend or foe exactly. We should stealth our way closer and see if we can learn more."

His jaw sets as he replies to Bear's question, "But if things go south, yes, I can jimmy-rig something to take it out."
