The Tiger’s Den

Aug 6, 2026 1:27 am
Mynt, the elderly Burmese barman at the Tiger’s Den, claims he can make any cocktail in the world. He has a decent array of drinks, pleasingly illuminated behind his long bar. But many of the bottles are empty, or almost so. The war has taken its toll on his stocks. Sharp-eyed visitors notice that a couple of bottles of sake share space with the gin and whisky. Reminders that the bar was very recently patronised by officers of the Imperial Japanese Army.

The clientele now is very different. Rowdy stokers from a tramp steamer, suited Indian clerks and sweaty engineers from the city’s railway. As well as the usual resident drunks, street walkers and opium-pedlars. It is hot, despite the fans turning in the bar’s ceiling, and cigar smoke hangs in the humid air.

Five clients sit at a corner table. An unlikely bunch of misfits, even by this bar’s standards. Harry Taylor, a mission controller for US special ops during the war, leads their discussion. He has chosen the bar and the table carefully. He is confident that any conversation there cannot be be easily overheard. Harry has assembled the crew, sending out feelers using what remains of his old network. He eyes the four with interest. A motley bunch, to be sure. But he has brought together many unlikely teams in his time.

Taylor is a tall, thin American, shabbily, but cleanly dressed in a white suit with a panama hat. He smokes nervously as he points out positions on his wrinkled map. He nurses a cocktail mixed with Bombay gin —a hangover from his years of cooperation with the Brits.

"Thanks for coming this evening. You’ve all had a decent look at the map and I can see you are interested. I was a coordinator for special ops during the last show. When we closed down the Kandi offices earlier this year, I held on to this file. It was supposed to have been destroyed. As you now know, it indicates the location of a ruined temple , far up in the foothills near Sagan. Loaded with treasure, according to these scribbles. It had not been considered a high priority mission during the war. It seemed a shame to destroy the information. I thought the file should be kept by someone who was able to do something with the intel."

Taylor explains that he wants to retire with a decent amount of money. He’s also curious about the temple and the nature of the treasure there. He’s not a criminal, he claims. He just thinks that , in life, one has to seize an opportunity when it arises. If there is treasure in the ruin, he argues, nobody is benefitting from it at present. And finders keepers, after all.

"Not all of you know each other. I wonder if you’d mind introducing yourself and explaining what it is you will contribute to our expedition…"
OOC:

Note that I’ve made Taylor an American to fit with back-stories more easily. I imagine he’s like Lee Marvin in one of his more suave roles.

Please briefly introduce yourself in character, responding to Taylor’s question. If you wish, please also explain what your character is wearing, drinking, smoking etc to build up a bit of atmosphere.

Lloyd Hutchkins is already half way through his second glass of gin. His imposing physique surely is his most defining feature. The man looks like he could carry a few bags of concrete without much issue. His obvious English accent gives his nationality away as soon as he talks. You may have heard him speak a few words of Burmese, that he picked up since living here, with the bartender earlier but it's far from fluent.

"You can call us 'Bear'." He tells the others while running his hand through his blond hair. He's clean shaven and wearing black shorts and a tight fitting dark green sleeveless tee. It may strike you that there is not a stain on his shirt. He seems to make an effort to have a spotless appearance. "I heard Taylor here was looking for someone to lug the heavy things around and bring a bit of proper firepower along an' all."

Nursing a small glass of water while an empty shot glass that recently contained vodka sits in front of her, you see a small Russian woman. Her soft face, and the the very polite manner she has treated Taylor and the few bar patrons who have solicited her seem to be at odds with the current environment. She is currently wearing a light set of dull cotton trousers and blouse, those familiar with the area would realize she likely obtained these clothes from a local market. Next to her is a big backpack, with a heavy leather jacket lovingly folded on top of it, a lightweight pot and pan dangling from the side, and some regional herbs and spices peeking out of a front pocket.

And after putting her drink down she starts speaking with a light Russian accent, "Zdravstvuyte, you may call me Ekaterina Volkova, though most comrades call me Katya. I'm good at getting payloads vere they need to be and fixing anything that goes wrong. Particularly anything with a...oh vats the word in english...a dvigatel, I believe the people here call it a set. I also know a little bit about...um, bombs, though it vas never my focus" (OOC: engine in Russian and Burmese respectively)

Sipping his Laphet Yay (sweet black tea), Vikram lets the others introduce themselves first. He was surprised to see the big man, Bear, at this meeting. Had his left eyebrow still worked, he would have lifted it in a questioning gesture, but instead, gave the man a simple nod of recognition. You don't bring in a maul when a ballpeen hammer will do. Clearly, this American was expecting some sort of resistance.

To his left, the Russian seemed like a more sensible pick. God knows the last thing you want to break in the middle of the jungle is your transportation, especially if hauling something of substantive value. But then she slipped in the word 'bombs' and again he wondered why.

Which brought all eyes to him. Vikram cleared his throat, minor pain still radiating from the tangle of scars that trailed their way from his face, down his neck, finally pooling around his shoulder. It was a miracle his ear and eye were left intact and functional.

In a steady clip, primarily Indian accent with a twinge of the UK, "Not to worry Ms. Volkova, whatever knowledge you lack in explosives I can make up for and then some. If we need to clear our way through the jungle and machetes aren't enough, or build a bridge to cross a ravine, I'm your man."

He finishes his tea, placing the glass down with a sharp tap, and looks at the last stranger yet to speak. Clearly he and Bear knew each other. This was getting more interesting by the minute.

Josey leaned back in his chair, lifting the two front legs a bit off the ground as he downed the last of his whiskey. While it wasn't as good as what he'd grown up on, or even what he'd been glad to help make, it was satisfying. Looking over at Bear he made a big show of signalling Mynt for another. "Bear? Comon now. You know you just want to get out and see if all those rumors about there being snakes and lizards out there that you could actually wrestle and make a suit of. Typical tacky crusty Brit, not wanting to give someone else a chance. You probably should change your name to Ox so we feel better about letting you lug all the heavy stuff." He grinned to let the other know he was meaning everything in a friendly manner but he was unsure if he was managing that.

"Hey Mynt! Send over a round of Sake." He turned back to the others. "If you haven't had it, you're missing out. Anyway, Call me Josey. I've got a bit of Jungle experience, and Bear can tell you I'm good with my hands and a knife.I guess I'm here to really kep en eye on your ox of a Brit and help him carry the heavy stuff so he doesn't get more than he can handle,"

Taylor listens to each of the team members. It is no accident that this crew resembles one of his wartime ‘cells’. And with similar overlapping roles—explosives (Vikram) , heavy weapons (Bear), recon (Josie) and transport (Eketerina).

He groans loudly when Josie orders sake.

"Sake? To hell with that. Japs probably poisoned it."

Taylor considers the four and feels the familiar pangs of anxiety and doubt. Were Josie and Bear burn outs? The Burmese jungle did that to people. The saner vets had long gone home. And Vikram’s face was more smashed up than he had heard. Was he still all there? Eketerina might be a risk, too. Was she working for Uncle Joe? The NKVD had ways of inducing dissidents to do their bidding.

But he somehow also knows that has he assembled a perfect team. He always did. It was his only true talent.

While they talk, life comes and goes in the busy bar. Rickshaws rattle past on the street outside. Vendors venture in, selling colourful fans. Mynt indulges them briefly, then waves them out. A trio of MPs enter. They are British Indian Army soldiers in spotless khaki uniforms. Their corporal asks for a glass of water and looks around the bar. His gaze settles briefly on the table of adventurers. Indian soldiers are not as deferential to Europeans as they were before the war, but the corporal decides to leave them be. He locks eyes briefly with Vikram.

"Careful of those farangi", his look suggests.

About ten minutes after the MPs depart, three rickshaws fly past the bar entrance. Four men leap from the vehicles and dash into the room. One man, carrying a pistol, jumps onto the teak bar-top. The other three, brandishing bamboo sticks, menace the patrons with their simple weapons.

"Empty the register," the first man shouts at Mynt in Burmese.

"Wallet, money! " shout the other three, in English, demanding the patrons’ valuables.

"Bullshit. This is a set up," Taylor snarls. "Deal with them. No shooting, no killing."

One of the bamboo-wielding robbers advances towards the adventurers’ table.

"Give me map!"
OOC:

Characters with any Burmese cultural knowledge will recognise these men as hired martial artists from a local school or gang. An easy tell is their distinctive leg tattoos. Anyone with good knowledge of firearms (shooting d8+) will see that the leader’s pistol is a broken Japanese sidearm, unlikely to do much damage even if it is actually used.

Ok, I asked for scrappy characters, so let’s see some scrappiness! In OOC terms these are all extras, with d8 in fighting but average toughness and no bennies. An easy-ish starting fight and an opportunity to show Taylor that he’s picked the right team.

—We’ll use party initiative this time. The robbers don’t expect resistance, so you will all go first

—The three guys working the tables are all within reach for this turn’s move/attack. A, B and C in order of proximity. All are Parry 6, toughness 5. Specify your target.

— The leader with the gun is on the bar-top, 40’ away and up, so not grabbable this round. But you might want to close distance with him or have a clever plan to deal with him. No shooting here, as Taylor says, or the authorities will get involved fast.

Grabbing Bear's half finished glass of gin, "I'll buy you another one." Vikram throws it at the nearest thug's face, in hopes of temporarily blinding him.
OOC:
aiming at thug A, will make him Vulnerable if successful.
OOC:
welp, mediocre first roll of the game. I'll spend a Benny, 2/3

ha! Welcome to Savage Worlds folks!

Bear is happy to see some familiar faces. He grins at Josey's mocking remarks and name change suggestion "I'll have a think on it." He simply replies. Knowing that Taylor picked Vikram and Josey, it was only natural that the lady at the table would be just as capable, though her origin worried him a bit. You never know with Russians. He thought.

His time to think however was cut short by the incoming gang of hoodlums. Before he knew it, his drink was sailing through the bar. He shot Vikram is disgruntled look and then assessed the situation quickly.

"That gun's rubbish." He shares with the group before getting up and grabbing the top cross bar of his chair. With a show of strength he swings it around and into the same thug Vikram was aiming at. (A)
OOC:
I'm not sure about the damage roll on this if it were to hit.
Edit: I'd like to specify that I want to do non-lethal damage :)

OOC:

Attacker A is shaken, so he’ll be taken out if shaken again.

Breaking off the cross bar of the chair might have taken a turn, maybe, but let’s say Bear was getting ready as soon as he laid eyes on them running in. Good improvisation.

OOC:
Ah sorry for it being unclear. He didn't break off the bar, he grabbed the bar then swung the entire chair 😁 it may have broken off on impact though.
I didn't realize when writing it could be interpreted otherwise but re-reading it now, indeed I should have specified.

Jumping into action, she notices a waitress, frozen in fear, holding what is assumedly Josey's bottle of Sake. She runs up and grabs the bottle. Blagadaryu. She takes a quick swig of it before throwing it at one of the goons. As it breaks over his face, she readies her knife and says That stuff vas not half bad Josey
OOC:
Targeting goon B, (non-lethal), also looked it up @TheGenerator, a wood chair does STR+1d6

Josey grinned as he rose to his feet. He had thought it was going to end up a boring evening. How wrong he was!

Grinning and nodding at Katya, he shouted "I told you! Best drinks anywhere. At least.. " he paused to grab one of the other chairs, "when he’s not fixing the place back up!" He stepped back and hurled the chair two-handed at the third bandit.

OOC:

Knighthawke--can you post as your character rather than with your player identity.

You haven't identified a target which can make my job a bit harder--I'll aim it at robber C out of spite !

B is taken out
A and C have to unshake. Both unshake and attack, miss.
D shouts out to call off the attack.

One of the robbers is knocked down by Ekaterina's lethal glass throw. The two men struck by the flying chairs grunt but recover from the furniture attack.

They swing with their bamboo poles, but do not land with any force.

"Let's go!" shouts the pistol-wielding ring-leader as he notices their attack is losing steam. Mynt has opened his till, but the lack-luster gunman does not even glance at the cash.

"This is bullshit. Let them leave," snarls Taylor. He has snatched up the map and folded it roughly into his pocket.
OOC:

Your characters will have heard their leader's command to leave--and Taylor's request to let them retreat.

If you follow Taylor's suggestion, they will drag the fallen fighter out of the bar and board a waiting rickshaw. If you want to keep fighting, it's now your turn and you can close and attack as they try to withdraw. Availability of chairs and glasses has been depleted ---either spend a round grabbing something or go in with your fists.

Whether or not you decide to keep fighting, make a hard notice roll, TN6.

Rolls

A and C unshake attempts - (1d6, 1d6, RA)

1d6 : (62) = 8

1d6 : (5) = 5

A attacks Josey, B attacks Bear - (1d8, 1d8, RA)

1d8 : (2) = 2

1d8 : (2) = 2

Josey can't help but raise his arm to block the pole. As soon as he felt the pole glancing past, he stepped in, throwing his fist straight to the man's face.

The pole guy’s parry is 6, so you’d need an attack roll of 10 to get a raise and a bonus damage die.
I think you did 2 damage, with no effect.

Katya pulls up to the bar and says in halting Burmese Sorry about that, I was wondering if we could get another 2 bottles of sake for our table, whenever you're ready. Thank you and then sits back down at the table, putting her knife away, and straightening her backpack that went askew in the brawl. Vell. That was fun.
