OOC:

Here’s the pic again to clarify what’s being referred to in the text. The temple ‘defenders’ are on alert as one character (Ek?) failed their earlier stealth roll.

In the pic, the stupa you crawl to is the first on the left. The stupa with the machine gun is the second on the left, directly in front of you when you reach the first stupa. The third structure is the temple where you see the monsters creeping out to find you…
https://i0.wp.com/hangrybackpacker.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/ancient-pagodas-Bagan-Myanmar.jpg?w=800&ssl=1

The discussion is inconclusive, but Taylor nods at Vikram’s counsel. Stealth it is.

The area becomes quiet and still. The late afternoon air is cooling, and diurnal birds have wound down their daytime song.

Bear can still make out faint movement in the most distant stupa. He hears, even more faintly, the familiar clicking of an ammo belt being lifted into position. A heavy machine gun. They have sensed the party’s approach all right!

One safe route of approach presents itself. A crawl route through the brush that will take them into the cover of the stupa on the left.
OOC:
The defenders have already sensed an approach. But they can’t see you yet. To speed things up I’ll say that you make it successfully to the cover of the first stupa.

The party wriggle forward. The brush claws at them. The ground, baked hot from the day’s time, burns at their bellies.

But they reach the cover of the leftmost stupa. Peeping around the stupa’s corner, they are able to spy out the approach more closely.

The heads of the gunners in the machine gun are now—just—visible in the second, rear stupa.

Strange creatures are stealing out from the gloom of the high temple entrance . Three shapes , similar in form to the stone leopard they destroyed in the Mandalay hotel grounds. But more humanoid and impish in appearance. They prance and hop forward , fanning out to search the temple approach for invaders.
OOC:

Let’s assume that you stay completely behind the cover of the stupa , to avoid being targeted by the machine gun. Waiting til the creatures draw level with you.

Then —unless you have another plan—you can open fire.

They are A, B and C. A will be just 6" away, B 12", C18".

They are therefore TN4 to hit. Toughness 8.

I’ll give you initiative as you will have readied your shot.

Before you fire , make a TN3 SPI roll (versus terror) when you see they are fanged, imp-like monkey creatures (TN3 only since this isn’t your first rodeo with these shadow monsters).

Bear crawls his way with the others to the stupa. with the burning heat from the ground it seems to take forever, but they manage to reach it safely.
Staying quiet, he motions to his ammo belt and then the location of the machine gun to indicate they are readying the weapon.

Then his attention is drawn to the strange figures. Bear once again gets low and unfolds the tripod of his weapon to set it down on the ground, aiming in the direction of the figures if they were to come close.
OOC:
which we know they will.
Normally I would wait until we agree to attack, but since Bear has the 'Impulsive' hindrance it seems logical that he just shoots when he sees targets.

In case it goes south.. Sorry all :D
Bear waits until he sees multiple targets, then lets loose in a flurry of bullets. The eerie animal like look of the monstrosities make him pull that trigger even before thinking.
OOC:
My ROF is 4. I'll target the A twice, B and C once each. I hope I'm doing this right. Let me know if I made any mistakes, OT.

Edit: Looks like 3 hits. I'll assign them in the order I specified above. Rolling damage.
23 dmg AP2 for target A, 16 dmg AP2 for target B.

Katya follows behind the test of the group, trying to follow their pathing as she is the least used to a jungle environment. Her heart beating in her chest as she approaches the temple, hear hand close to her shoulder holster. As the figures drift closer and she notices Bear setting up a tripod, and the glint of stone flashes off them she draws her Colt and gestures to one on the left.
OOC:
We'll say I shoot C. Ek is also impulsive so I think it makes sense she just agrees violence is the way
As she hears the first bullet of the LMG, she fires a shot at one of them. but it glances off their stone bodies.

Vikram was deep in thought on jimmy rigging something to use against the entrenched gunners, when the rat-a-tat-tat of Bear's machine gun broke him out of it. He couldn't quite wrap his head around what those things were, but at least he knew they could be defeated, as evidenced by two of them crumbling into dust from Bear's bullets. Unholstering his own Colt, Vikram took a shot at the farthest one, missing badly.

Two of the monkey forms explode into black dust. The third creature spins and charges towards the adventurers.
OOC:

The furthest monkey is a couple of rounds move away from the party, it doesn't have much of a chance. I'm just going to fast forward on some firing...

As it charges, the third monkey is caught in a hail of machine gun and small arms fire. It disintegrates into chunks of dust and stone-like matter.

A few seconds of silence pass. Bear detects the thudding of retreating feet. Vikram, peering cautiously around the corner of the first stupa, sees that the second stupa is now empty of its gunners. He sees the barrel of the machine gun poking through wall slit. It is unmanned.
OOC:

So the defenders have run off!

The party can now advance tentatively and scout the second stupa. A hole has been made to its rear to give access to its hollow core. Apart from the machine gun, US military-stamped crates have been carefully stacked. The temple --at least its steps and front chamber--also now seems empty.

https://www.paratime.ca/images/fantasy/temple002.jpg
OOC:

I'm going to share the temple map here, but of course your characters at the moment can only see area 1 and have no idea what the interior looks like beyond that.

What do you wish to do at this stage? Look further at the items in the stupa? Leave that and continue into the temple (entering areas 2 or 5?)? Make any necessary rolls to support your actions.

Giving Taylor an inquisitive eyebrow at the US stamps, "Are these your people?", Vikram looks through the crates, seeing if there's anything of value, monetarily or otherwise.

ctme2000 says:
Giving Taylor an inquisitive eyebrow at the US stamps, "Are these your people?", Vikram looks through the crates, seeing if there's anything of value, monetarily or otherwise.
Vikram notices a crude but effective trap. One of the crates is rigged with a tripwire, connecting to a hidden device—presumably a bomb—hidden within.
OOC:

Make a TN4 repair roll to diffuse…

Vikram or anybody else can make a Common Knowledge roll to assess the nature/ origin of the crates.

Warning the others, "Stand back, it's booby trapped." Vikram rummages through his Boom! bag for a wire cutter and telescopic mirror. Ever so carefully, he works on defusing the trap.

Bear picks up his gun shortly after it's become clear that the potential targets have left. "That turned out to be proper effective." He seems happy with the results. When Vikram moves into the stupa, he follows. Bear is more interested in the large gun than the crates. He heads that way until Vikram warns them about the trap.

After it's skillfully defused, he continues onwards to look for ammo to replace what he lost. Though he's pretty sure the caliber from the HMG won't match his own gun, they may have brought other types as well.
OOC:
Not sure if this needs a roll, I'll add a notice just in case.

Sep 3, 2026 6:06 pm
Bear finds two spare belts for the heavy Japanese machine gun, but no other ammo.

Vikram discovers that the tripwire is attached to a bundle of American grenades, hidden inside the trapped crate. The crate is otherwise packed with field telephones, radios, and expensive walkie-talkies. The crate markings suggest that they were part of a cargo sent as military aid to China during the recent war. Vikram knows that the US air-lifted a billion dollars worth of gear over the ‘Hump’, the Himalayas. Brave young Yank crews flew heavily loaded transport planes across the "roof of the world". Many planes, Douglas Skytrains, were lost, brought down by Japanese fighters , altitude and harsh weather harsh. The hills and jungle in this area is strewn with the wreckage of their effort.

"Geez," says Taylor. "The gear in these crates might be as valuable as any crap we might find in the ruin. What shall we do? Open this stuff up, or move into the temple? "
OOC:

Each crate will need to be carefully checked and opened to check the nature and value of the gear. A problem is that the party has no transport to move the cargo. The jeeps are a day’s march away.

Please have an IC chat about the find. What do you think your character would decide to do in the situation?

Sep 4, 2026 4:10 am
Vikram gives a low whistle at all the assembled electronic gear. He does some quick math in his head and smiles once the sum is calculated. The smile fades though as the reality of the situation hits him.

"We can't do anything with this right now, and still have the temple to investigate. We're also still not sure how many of those beasts, men or otherwise, are out there. Best to temporarily leave the equipment here and continue on."

He takes out the grenades and places them in his bag, as well as two of the fancy walkie-talkies, "These may be useful to us down there." referring to the temple.
OOC:
not sure if we already have walkie talkies/radios from The Gem, and if it doesnt take too long, I'll grab a few (min 2, max 4) for the group.

Katya looks over the equipment, and nods at it. She doesn't know the value of the equipment herself but can tell it has been well maintained Ve are not in a rush, Ve can take inventory and make a path for the jeep later. She unloads her mag and adds bullets to replace the fired rounds.

She turns around to start cautiously approach the temple, not checking to see if anyone is following her.
Sep 4, 2026 9:56 am
"Must have been a way they got all this gear here." Bear concludes. "So there must be a way to get it out." He looks around the stupa. "Anyone see a crate marked 'Easy assembly cargo air ship' or something?" He chuckles. Perhaps it was still the adrenaline rush from just now that was making him joke around.
OOC:
Did we hear any sounds of vehicles when the enemy retreated? Maybe there is still a vehicle around here somewhere we could use.
"We may not be in a rush, Katya, but those guys who ran are probably getting backup as we speak." As he says that he Bear is removing the bolt from the machine gun. "Better disable this thing." He tells the others. The he pockets the removed part and adds "For now..."

"Good idea." He tells Vikram when Bear is handed a walkie-talkie. He gives it a quick try to make sure they work.

OOC:

There is no noise indicating vehicles. Most work here would be done by ox-cart or elephant. Which work well in the terrain, in fact! There is sign of an ox-track, which might lead to a village somewhere. Make a tn4 survival roll to assess what kind of traffic has been on the track.

But the temple is very isolated.

Make a repair roll TN4 to assemble/ fire up the walkie -talkies, which have been packed up for assembly in China.

There is nothing to impede your approach to or enter the temple. Since nobody has mentioned which temple door you prefer, I’ll assume you enter area 5, which is directly ahead of you rather than the door to area 2.

The party climb the temple steps tentatively and enter the gloom of its portico. The polished teak doors directly ahead are battered by age and have been holed by bullets. They are partly ajar. Peering in, they see a large temple hall [area 5 on map] . The area is dark, with sunlight streaming in through the slit windows on its left wall.

Just to the right of the teak doors, tiny row of steps into the inky blackness of the temple basement.
OOC:

There is nothing so far that presents a threat. Make a Common Knowledge tn6 or academics roll tn4 to make sense of the wall frieze.

What’s your next move? Again, no right moves here. It’s just pulpy fun. But make rolls with your post, please, if you take any actions that require a result.

Sep 5, 2026 3:02 am
Unpacking the walkie-talkies, Vikram calibrates the frequencies as they walk and hands one to each of his teammates.

Once in the temple hall, he takes some time to admire the frieze then inspects the rest of the room, "Shall we check this side room, make sure no boogeyman are hiding inside?"
OOC:
Figure check Room 6, then onwards to Room 7? Were the crates in Room 1 or 3?

OOC:

Just to clarify. The crates are in the second stupa (second structure in the left in the photo), where the machine gun was set up. This is our first turn in the temple, which the party has just entered.

Walkie-talkies are assembled ok. I’ll wait to see if other characters get a success on the survival roll, or get a better outcome (i.e. a raise) on the frieze.

Bear takes a moment to check how this gear would have arrived here, and possibly how the men that were stations here left.

Bear is able to detect faint traces in the dirt trail. He determines that animal-drawn carts have used the track, but not regularly or recently. There are a few, old elephant prints visible. The machine gunners have likely run off into the jungle. Others on the scene have also either fled, or remain somewhere in the temple.

In the large frieze room, Vikram recognises images telling the most famous story from Hindu myth, the Ramayana. A sequence of twenty pictures follows the life and journey of Rama, prince of Ayodhya and avatar of the god Vishnu, including the rescue of his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. As a Sikh, Vikram has been taught to dismiss such idolatrous tales. But it is so well-known in his home country, he knows the gist of the story.

He notices that the last few pictures add details to the usual account. One of Ravana’s demon generals, a tiger-headed devil, flees across the sea after Ravana’s defeat. He is pursued and captured by Rama’s soldiers in a barbed net. Rama swings the net and hurls the demon general to a prison mansion on the moon. The final picture shows the tiger-headed devil peering from the gates of his prison.

It resembles closely the temple in which the party are standing.

The small room on the left contains a large ornamental table, on which carved stone fruit rest as if for a meal.

As they return to the frieze room, the doors to their right [to 7, the altar area] burst open and the three remaining temple dwellers rush in to attack. The priests swing ceremonial maces. The villager shoots a pistol.
OOC:

There’s no intended puzzle with the absence of vehicles. The idea is that this is a —very— isolated place with no easy way to haul out gear. Some of the loot is more easily portable, but you’ll find that out later when you have time to open up all the crates.

Ok, combat. Drawing cards for Bear, Ek, Vik, npcs.
Card order is:
KH npcs
8D Ek
8C Vikram
6C Bear

Npc attacks below. Npc attacks miss except mace blow on Taylor. Taylor is currently frail so I’ll say it shakes.
Repurposing Taylor’s shoot as a VIG roll to unshake, fails.
The attacks are clumsy but fierce.

The priest attacking Eketerina swings wide. The villager shoots well wide of Bear.

But Taylor is knocked off-balance by the first priest and is unable to fire his pistol.
OOC:

Your turn to attack! Post in any order, you don’t need to keep to the card sequence.

These three are pretty mediocre extras, as you can see from their dice.

This is a confused melee. Any shooting roll of 1, or 1 or 2 for the machine gun, risks hitting an innocent bystander.
