Stepping up to the smoldering fire cautiously, Vikram responds to Bear, "I didn't, but I've been in the explosives business long enough to know that if you apply enough heat, everything eventually burns.".

He checks to see if his sight or smell detects any sort of accelerant that would make more sense out of this. Sensing nothing, he looks up at Taylor, nodding in agreement about taking off before the police arrive. He waits to see what the others think.

Katya takes her Colt back, and hikes up her formal dress to put it back on her hidden thigh holster. Happy it only took one round, and that I brought it in the first place. She rolls her shoulders and looks at the beast in the wheelbarrow. Whatever that thing was it definitely wasn't flesh and blood...hit way too hard into that wheelbarrow. Some kind of automaton perhaps? Wish I could have looked inside it, but oh well. Anyways, once you're done Vik, we should head out. We don't need documentation of being here As she looks anxiously into the night.

Vikram watches as the ashes glow and scatter with unnatural speed. An aroma briefly touches his senses. A scent of myrrh or some other rare incense. The creature was tangible and real enough, he considers, but wrought from some strange immaterial substance…

It is oddly exhilarating , making a moonlight flit from the hotel. Taylor manages to stall the manager just long enough for Vikram, Ek and Bear to grab their belongings from their expensive hotel rooms and board the dusty jeeps. They meet Taylor at a side door and take off. As they leave the hotel grounds, a police car turns the corner on their way to the scene.

They take a circuitous route out of the city, in case the police or army have placed a call to stop them. They pass the city’s beautiful old palace, whose floodlights have only recently been restored. They then head north-east, rather than north, driving through paddies and villages before re-joining the main highway.

The night driving is exciting but taxing. Only the moonlight and the headlights of a rare truck lighten the highway. After an hour or so, even the main road narrows, and begins to curve and climb into jungle and hills…
OOC:

1. The driving is more challenging for this stretch, TN4 (normal) rather than easy. I’m going to assume that you allow only skilful Eketerina to make the roll this time, with Taylor handling the second jeep.
2. Taylor, as an American, has been able to drive since youth. But as an older man, he will grow tired after a few hours. He will signal that he wishes to stop and rest before continuing deeper into the hills. If you think this is wise, make a normal notice roll to spot a comfy/safe place to pull over and rest.

Aug 21, 2026 2:07 am
Katya takes her time on the road, not driving particularly fast or slow. Trying to blend in as much as military jeeps can on a road, as she keeps her eyes on the dark road. Don't want any more surprises her passanger would hear her mutter

Well thats unfortunate

Seeing Ek glide through the jungle at night without a hitch was almost as unnatural as the beast they encountered earlier. Biblical, parting of the red seas like.

Seeing Taylor yawn and struggle to stay awake though was somehow more unnerving.

Though he felt they should continue on, he wasn't as comfortable driving in this scenario and wasn't sure of the others. He kept an eye out for somewhere they may be able to pull over for the night, just in case.

Wow, that’s a huge number of raises. The only angle I can think of for a ‘succeed forward’ is that you have a smooooooth drive! ☺️

I agree with ctme on both his points.

Vikram squints forward through the beams of the headlights. He spots a good location, a bombed out farm building. The jeeps can park up behind the structure with no risk of detection from the road.

Everyone is grateful for the plentiful provisions —biscuits, boiled sweets, nuts—provided by U Gem. Taylor grumbles about the stacks of ‘Limey’ chocolate, but brightens when he finds some bars of Hersheys packed in with the treats.

Taylor is the oldest and most tired , having driven the whole previous day and much of the night without rest. He falls asleep almost immediately. His younger colleagues also begin to feel sleepy…

OOC:

That’s the end of the Mandalay section. I’ll wait out in case there’s anything else wants to add, or if Gen wants to add some Geordie banter for Bear…

Next stop will be the Kachin highlands…

The next day, the vehicles set off again on the main northern road and take a turning into a remote region of the Kachin Hills.

The road is rougher, with stretches of mud track and much less frequent traffic. There are steep climbs and drops with treacherous hairpin turns. The jungle flanks the road more closely, at times forming a leafy canopy that hides the sun.

Jeeps , re-purposed for civilian use, are common here. The party’s vehicles no longer seem out of place. To refuel, they pause at the few hill towns that have petrol pumps. The towns are garrisoned by Gurkha companies, the best of Burma Command’s troops. Clearly the area is regarded as unsafe. The Gurkhas guarding the petrol stops are garrulous and keen to trade their rations for sweets and booze. They talk of Kachin separatists, Burmese nationalists and bandits in the region ahead.

Let’s do some drive rolls to cover the way ahead. Ek and npc Taylor take turns to drive on point. Bear (with Ek) and Vikram (with Taylor) can assist with notice rolls in each case. I’ll abstract these to cover instances that occur over several days of travel:

Ek and Bear on point. Ek rolls driving, TN varies, Bear assists with TN4 notice.
1. fallen tree (hidden by bend): driving TN4 . Fail= minor crash.
2. road collapses in mudslide: driving TN6. Fail= serious crash.
3. Unattended work elephant on road : driving TN3. Fail= minor crash, injured elephant.

Taylor and Vikram on point. Taylor rolls driving , TN varies. Vikram assists with TN4 notice.
4. broken bridge: driving TN3 . Fail= jeep trapped on bridge.
5. local villager appears on road :driving TN4 . Fail= injured or dead local.
6. low hanging branch. driving TN7. Fail= serious injury and damage to jeep windscreen.

If you fancy making an additional roll (e.g. to talk with locals or soldiers) , go ahead as we are ‘travelling by map’ here.

Bear straps in for another day of jeep riding. "I'll gan with Katya again." He announces before anyone can make the same claim. The ride yesterday was so smooth that he wouldn't want to risk sitting with Taylor.

As they take the hairpin turns, Bear tries to watch out for any unforeseen obstacles on the road.

"When I was a little lad, me old man took us to the Alps once. I mind when we were on a slight mountain ridge like this one and we had to pass another car coming from the other side. I was proper terrified we'd gan over the edge and be lost for good." He tells Katya ending with a chuckle. "I'm certain that won't be happening today!"
At one of the hill towns, Bear tries to talk to one of the soldiers. He offers them one of the candy bars from his rations to get them in a talking mood. After a bit of banter about the weather and complimenting their firearm, to which the soldier does little more than nodding, he asks a question that might get a useful answer. "So, what's been the goings on in the area, then?" Perhaps he could find out some interesting rumors.

Katya very smoothly avoids the fallen tree. To the point one could miss it was there. As she listens to Bear's chit chat and giggles. Same thing happened with me and my papa. Vell except it was our ox and carriage...poor ox was scared to death.

As she says that she spots the muddy, dangerous road, and her eyes light up with an almost manic light...Hold on Bear, this is going to be pleasurable. As she takes the road at speeds she really shouldn't be. Barely not crashing several times due to Bear yelling out hazards. And as the muddy road ends, she quickly slows and narrowly avoids a work elephant while resuming her calm, smooth driving from before. Vat a thrill huh!

Let’s do Taylor’s rolls. In advance, I’ll say that I’ll spend one benny only and let any complications play out….

Taylor crawls across the damaged bridge with appropriate caution, so that Ek is easily able to follow in the second jeep.

He swerves well in time to avoid the villager, who smiles sheepishly.

But he breaks rather too slowly to avoid the overhanging branch, which smashes the windscreen and seems set to impale him…the jeep stops with inches to spare…
OOC:

Ok, he made the last roll with a benny re-roll! No need for @ctme2000 to make his assist rolls…
Bear chats to a Gurkha sergeant who wants to trade local eggs for a a pack of the party’s American cigs. The man is quietly-spoken and polite, but Bear notices that he wears the ribbon for the Military Cross. Clearly the man has seen plenty of action. The sergeant warns that the area beyond Gurkha control has been sealed off. Kachin separatists have seized control of nearby villages in protest against bandits smuggling opium from the highlands. Nobody is allowed to enter the area.

They will not be able to go much further on the road.

"Well that’s just dandy," says Taylor when he hears the news. He outlines the options to proceed.
OOC:

These are to:
1. Park up the jeeps somewhere safe and proceed to the temple on foot. Three days’ hike through hills and jungle (survival skills, VIG)
2. side-step the road blocks in the jeeps, using old elephant trails, streams and overgrown train tracks (more driving, common knowledge)
3. try to bribe or persuade a Gurkha officer at the roadblock that they have legit business going forward. If the officer in change is a Brit (2 in6) chance this will be very hard , DC8, if a Nepali officer it will be TN5 or less* if you hand over plenty of goodies.
4. anything else you can think of?

*this is meant to indicate that a Gurkha officer might be more pragmatic or ‘broad-minded’ , rather than cast aspersions on their honesty.

"Good job, old man. I didn't think you had it in you." Vikram nervously chuckles, as the American deftly avoids the near disaster of the branch.

Later that day, going over their choices, he pipes in, "Using the back roads may be our best bet, especially if there is treasure that needs transporting. I have faith in your driving." Vikram states, nodding approvingly at Ek and Taylor, though perhaps more of a white lie with the latter.

Looking at the others, "Any counterpoints?"
OOC:
sorry for the delay y'all, busy with family stuff. Tomorrow should be similar so feel free to bot me if needed.

Katya looks up from a recipe card she had gotten from a village elder while Bear had been talking to a soldier. Yeah I agree, though ve could valk and plan a route for the jeep as ve go. It would be safer, though much slower as we would have to make the trip twice. Quite frankly I'm happy with using the jeeps to go into the forest, no matter how dangerous it is. Bear would recognize a hint of that manic light in her eyes that she had while driving on the muddy road.
Aug 23, 2026 7:35 pm
Bear nods in agreement. "I don't fancy risking a run in with the bobbies, like." The group has shown tremendous capabilities of driving the jeeps already. What could go wrong? He was confident.
"The elephant trails are our best bet."
Aug 23, 2026 9:44 pm
If that is the path ve may want to buy some spare parts and ... uh...pokryshki...uh tires. Never can be too cautious
Aug 23, 2026 10:47 pm
Taylor listens to the party’s opinion and nods.

That evening, resting in an empty church hostel, Taylor plans out an ingenious but treacherous route to the temple area. To avoid monitored roads, the route links two disused but potentially intact lines of communication —an abandoned telegraph road, and a stretch of rail track that once served a remote tea station.

To join the two lines, the party will need to take desperate measures. First, follow a river into a jungle-covered valley to reach the telegraph road. Later, to move between the telegraph road and abandoned bush rail, they will need to hack a path for the jeeps through a band of steep jungle.

"I am not sure if we can drive on the tracks. We can walk from there if not. I didn’t say it would be easy," growls Taylor.

…….

The next morning, the jeeps roll out of the village, laden with gear for the final push. Once out of sight of any habitations, Taylor indicates a turning that leads to a shallow, noisy river.

"Here we are. At the start of our own lucky Route 7. First, we are going to have drive next to this river, or in it. All being well, we’ll be able to hop onto the telegraph road a few miles up-stream."

"Now, finally, Burma Command isn’t watching. No more need for civility. Shall we get ourselves ready?"

Taylor undresses, stepping into the cover of one of the jeeps to maintain decorum. He roughly folds away his white suit and hat. Then shrugs on a safari jacket and fastens a cross belt with a machete, .45 automatic and ammo. He slips on his old Marauders jungle hat, as a lucky token and nod to his war days. He checks his gear. Binoculars, smokes, lighter, water bottle, map. He lights up one of his smokes and grimaces.

" My guess is that it’s going to be bumpy.…"

OOC:

Two things please:
1. Your character will already have had a chance to review Taylor’s ingenious but challenging route. Make a suitable roll to see if you can refine it further—any shifts (i.e. successes ignored) on a survival OR common knowledge roll will have improved it, reducing the DC for some later rolls.
2. As Taylor mentions, the party is now beyond the ken of the colonial authorities. You can wear what you like and carry weapons and gear openly as you wish. Can you provide a mini-montage (on the lines of the example I provided for Taylor) to gear up?
