Hastali turns to his companions, saying that on the one hand, it's certainly best to avoid unnecessary confrontations, but on the other, that beast still poses a danger, and that it would be nice to neutralize it without fighting. It's clear, however, that it's not a humanoid worth negotiating with.
Then he pauses for a moment to see if there are any nearby elements that could trap it, or something he could exploit to prevent it from being followed.
Talking to his companions, he then says that if none of these solutions are possible, perhaps the best thing to do is rely on his fear of the torch and continue, hoping it has no way of following us once we close the oak door.
"What do you think?"

Of course, Hastali doesn't forget that it's time to explore the room and, of course, search the humanoid's body. But first, he waits to see what his companions plan to do with the spider.
OOC:

I'll try to say, stretching the meaning of the descriptor a bit, that I use the "mechanism builder" edge to determine if there's something to trap the beast with.
So I roll 2d6. The first die represents the basic roll, the second the descriptor. So if docleadfoot deems the use of the edge improper, we still have the result with just one die.

Rolls

Understanding how to trap the spider - (1d6, 1d6)

"Indeed. It seems to fear the fire." Mart agrees. "I don't know this species in particular, but I suspect we should avoid being bitten either way." He looks at the cowering creature. "It probably won't risk attacking us head on unless we're restricted." He adds with some general spider knowledge. "Yes, closing the door will surely deny it entry to the next room."

"Perhaps we can drag the body back a bit so we can inspect it safely." Mart hands the torch to Magnus and tries to pull the body towards them and away from the spider.
OOC:
I don't have any specific skill for this.
That's not a good roll :/

Rolls

Pull the body to a safer place - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Magnus accepts the torch, brandishing it aloft and causing the spider to retreat a few feet farther up the wall. Taking his cue from Hastali's reasoning, he muses: "While I don't see any materials suitable for trap makin', we DID bring some oil along, yes? Drop some on the floor between us and that monster and I'll see about lightin' it up with the torch. That ought to keep it cornered for a bit."

Meanwhile, Mart has scarcely touched the unfortunate humanoid's body when he notices a second shadowy spider-form perched above the formerly secret entrance the party just came through. Like the other spider, the single torch appears to be giving it pause, but that's not going to last forever.

"Might be time for another torch..."

OOC:
Since Hastali got a 'yes and' result but there weren't any suitable materials to follow through on the trap plan, I'll translate that into +1 Will point, bringing his total up to 4. Good roll -- we're probably going to need a couple more of those soon!
May 30, 2026 2:00 pm
"Son of a ...!" Mart shouts suddenly, as he pulls on the corpse. "Watch out, there's another one behind us." Did we miss that one when we came in? he thinks to himself. They were very focused on the noise in the back of the corridor, so it's not unlikely that they completely failed to notice this spider.

"Let's follow Hastali's idea and get into the next room, then close the door." He proposes.
In the mean time, he checks the body to see what killed it and if there's anything noteworthy on its person.
OOC:
Gonna add "practical biologist" to my roll because I want to find out what killed this person. If it's not applicable to the loot, feel free to take only the first roll for that.

Tartarosso, I feel a bit bad doing this since it was your idea to look at the body, but I want you to know that I'm not a loot-hog. So anything I find in game I will let you know unless Mart has a specific reason to keep it secret. :)

Given Mart's words, Hastali suggests proceeding to the next room. He suggests adopting a "safety" formation. He or Magnus (but Hastali suggests himself because he doesn't have enough confidence in Magnus's physical abilities at the moment) will enter through the wooden door. Mart will stand between them with the torch, and the remaining scout (as mentioned, Hastali suggests Magnus) will stand to monitor their exit from the spider room.
This way, they should be able to defend themselves from any spider attacks without turning their backs on them, while also protecting themselves from whatever they might find in the next room.
Before proceeding, however, Hastali waits for Mart to finish searching the corpse. He also waits for Mart to strip him of anything that might be useful as loot or for the continuation of the mission.

After this, he waits to hear what his companions think of his proposal.
OOC:

If the answer is yes, before entering the new room, Hastali checks the wooden door for any traps.

OOC:
Mart will go along with Hastali's safety formation idea and take back the torch from Magnus to allow for that setup after he's done looting.
Jun 15, 2026 9:05 am
Checking the body while Magnus holds the sputtering torch aloft to keep the spiders at a distance, Mart finds several sets of fang marks on the body. Given the creature's facial expression, it must have died in agony.

OOC:
Looks like we're attempting to move to the next room without fighting the spiders...
Magnus lights up a fresh torch off the dying one and hands it back to Mart as Hastali calls out new marching orders. He shifts his dagger back to his main hand and watches for movement from the waiting spiders, muttering: "I hope whatever's on the other side of that door is easier to deal with than these monsters. I'm used to stepping on spiders, not fending them off with fire!"

The creatures do indeed inch along the walls toward the party as the pool of torchlight moves toward the side of the room with the door, but the fresh torch continues to hold them at bay.

Meanwhile, Hastali's check of the door reveals no evidence of traps, but it's locked shut. Options include:

• Spending some time to pick the lock (could burn an additional torch)
• Breaking the door down (could alert whatever's on the other side; can't shut a broken door)
Jun 15, 2026 4:04 pm
OOC:
Personally, I'd prefer to try to lockpick by adding a die using the "mechanism builder" description.
If I understand correctly, if the roll is successful, we don't waste the torch.
Obviously, I'm also waiting for the opinion of @TheGenerator
Hastali explains to the other two explorers that the door is locked and what the two options are.
He also says that with his experience working with mechanisms, he might be able to open the door without wasting too much time and therefore without wasting a torch.
"What do you think?"
Jun 16, 2026 9:30 am
Mart snatches up the brass key. He'll mention it to the others in the next room.

He takes the new torch from Magnus. "Give me that old torch too. I can use it as a cudgel." He tells him, taking the sputtering torch into his good hand. Having no real weapons himself, it'll might prove useful to him.

"A locked door?" Mart asks to confirm. "Here, try this key I just found on this person. It appears he's got big fang marks. I'd conclude that these spiders are indeed not friendly! But they do already have a meal ready for them. So they may leave us alone if we leave them with the body."

He hands the key to Hastali for him to try on the door. "Otherwise, if you think you can pick the lock, we'll try to buy you some time for it."
He jabs the torch at one of the spiders that had gotten a little too close for comfort.
OOC:
Mart will pass through the door last to keep the spiders at bay.
Should I roll for that?
Jun 16, 2026 4:40 pm
OOC:
Some might say I didn't read the post carefully and missed the key, but in reality, what Hastali said was because I wanted to stay in character, making him say things consistent with the fact that he still didn't know about the key (of course not).
Hastali turns to Mart and tells him to pass him the key. He'll try to open the door. Otherwise, he prepares to open it, keeping an eye out for what he'll find on the other side.
Jun 17, 2026 7:22 am
OOC:
Yep, I was leaving it to TheGenerator to decide whether his character wanted to admit to finding the key. It's why I included the two other options for getting past the door. Granted, I'm not sure why he WOULD keep the key a secret but I'm trying to leave as much room as I can for player agency and avoid making assumptions I don't need to make.
Magnus peers into the gloom and holds his knife at the ready, though the torches appear to be keeping the spiders at bay for the moment. The key does indeed fit the lock, turning the mechanism with an audible *click*. The only other sounds as the door creaks open are the flames of the fresh torch greedily lapping at the air and the sound of the party breathing as the door swings wide.

Torchlight spills into a much smaller unadorned chamber. The floor is hewn from a similar stone as the previous chamber, but unpolished. The room appears to be empty save for a simply chiseled stone casket in the corner, much smaller and less decorated than the one in the antechamber.

There's a closed wooden door on the wall to the right as the party enters.

@Tartarosso, it was perfectly RP'd!

I appreciate that :) even though, as you say, I don't have a reason to keep such things secret.

I've updated the map. Gonna let Hastali act first.
Jun 18, 2026 8:30 am
Hastali uses his torch to check for spiders on the ceiling or walls. He also looks around carefully to determine if there are any other threats. If there are no other threats, he then proceeds to enter the room and cautiously approach the sarcophagus. He inspects it without touching it to better understand what it is by looking at it up close.
OOC:

If we understand that there are no threats, perhaps it would be helpful to put out one torch to avoid using too much of it. Obviously, if it makes sense to put it out and then reuse it.
Jun 18, 2026 9:28 am
OOC:
I didn't realize Hastali also had a torch.
"Go on." Mart tells Magnus to let him through the door. Then he follows behind, his front facing the spiders to keep them at bay with the flames of the torch. "Stay back, you two!" He calls out to the fanged creatures.

"Is it safe in there?" He asks the others, but he doesn't wait for an answer. Slowly he backs his way into the other room before trying to close the door with his foot.

OOC:

It comforts me that I'm not the only one who doesn't read carefully :D
Jun 19, 2026 6:17 am
Magnus shoots one last glare towards the nearest spider, then brushes past Mart to follow Hastali into the next room. It has a much more rough-hewn look than the previous rooms, almost as though it were meant for some mundane utility such as storage. The casket is unsealed and doesn't appear to be rigged, nor is it large enough to be suitable for burying anything human sized or larger.

Nothing appears to be skulking around in the shadows or waiting to bite the party.

@DocLeadfoot do I need to roll anything to keep the spiders at bay?

OOC:
The light's keeping them away; if you're worried about being followed you can close the door, but otherwise nah. Just follow everyone else into the next room.
Jun 20, 2026 9:03 pm
Mart closes the door, keeping the spiders on the other side. "Alright. I don't think they'll get through." He looks at the others. "Everyone ok? If you need healing, I've brought some leeches." unfortunately for the leeches, it seems that nobody got hurt.

Then Mart turns his focus to the new casket. "Perhaps this one holds the artifact we're looking for." He brings his torch closer to get a good look. He searches for any interesting looking markings.

OOC:
I don't know if @DocLeadfoot is waiting for me. If so, Hastali is waiting for Mart to inspect the casket
