OOC:
Do I need to roll a defense against the attack from the fungoid?
Sep 9, 2026 10:56 pm
OOC:
Not necessarily. Envision and declare your intent, pose it as a closed (yes/no) question where the yes would be the positive end of the outcome, build the dice pool based on advantage/disadvantage balance, then roll that many dice. I'll interpret the roll and narrate the outcome; generally a 'yes, and' will result in Mart doing what he wants while the mushroom misses while a 'no, and' will tend to wind up with the mushroom doing what it wanted. The in-between results could wind up with both or neither of them getting their way; that will depend on the result combined with the context of the fiction.

Of course, if you want to try a fancy parry and counter maneuver I'm not going to stop you. :D

Mart tries to pull the torch away before the creature can knock it out of his hand. These buggers are smarter than he had thought. "No!" He yells as he shifts his stance into a defensive posture. "Attack now!" He shouts at the goblin standing behind him.

Hastali's hammer is at the ready and he meets his fungoid by smacking it squarely in the face before it has a chance to strike, knocking it back a step amidst a puff of spores.
OOC:
Hastali's opponent - the mottled fungoid - has gained the 'injured' status. It will also need to reposition before it can attack again.
Magnus has his knife up in time to parry the lunge from the lumpy one but he's pressed back slightly as he repositions to keep his balance.

Mart manages to keep his torch aloft for the moment but the creature's root-like "hand" closes around his wrist, grappling him for control of it.

As the melee is joined, the goblin lets out a strangled cry, its feet slapping on the dusty stone as it charges... toward the exit. With its comrades down, it apparently has no intention of continuing the fight.

"COWARD!" Mart calls out to the fleeing goblin. The grip around his wrist hurts as the creature tightens its roots around the skin. However, Mart tries to turn the situation into his favor. He was now unavoidably in range of the fungoid's attacks, but at the same time it was in range of Mart's attacks.

Luckily he was still holding the flaming torch. With the mushroom so close to him, he jabbed the torch in its direction again, pressing it firmly under its mushroom cap head where the flames can easily burn its spores. Surely those would burn well. "Let go of me you fiend!"
OOC:
Let me know if this calculation is correct:
+1 from using fire
+1 from biological knowledge
-1 from being grappled
= 2 dice
I'll roll them separately so you can decide differently if needed

Rolls

burn the shroom - (1d6)

(1) = 1

extra die - (1d6)

(4) = 4
