Into the Darkness [ EDIT ]

This game has been retired! That means it's no longer being run.

System: Freeform Universal Classic, with flavor from Notequest and/or Heroquest
Tone: Old School Dungeon Crawl
Setting: Homebrew. We're going to play to find out!
Scope: 4 PC Limited Series, possibly with an option to extend and expand.
All comers are welcome.

I'm an old hand who's been out of the game a while. This will serve as my re-entry into play-by-post and game mastering.
Note: if you don't have Freeform Universal, it's free to download from peril planet.
Finn's CrossingA small but prosperous agricultural town located several days north of the tri-city delta. Prosperous, that is, until the river dried up, and with it most of the trade and traffic that used to flow through. The crops have begun to whither, and while caravans still occasionally travel by land the community won't have much to trade without a crop surplus.

Certain folk have turned to adventuring for treasure in the hopes of avoiding the looming spectre of abject poverty. If that's you, come on over and join the party.

Whet your knife, check your rations, and keep your torches dry. You're about to explore the twisty passages under the Earth, where the sun don't shine. Seems there's a fabled treasure to be had down there, and it isn't going to come marching up into the light of day to be found.

Good luck, adventurer. Don't let your torch go out...
Full disclosure: this will be my first time running a Freeform Universal game, so there may be some hiccups as we clarify some rules and expectations. I've already set up a few bespoke threads in the forum to communicate those clarifications and the players can always ask for more details (which will also likely wind up in those threads for future reference). This will keep things consistent as we build it all out.

Are you sure you want to retire this game?
It will be moved to the Retired Games drawer at the bottom of your Games list. You can come back here and unretire it later, if needed.
Any future posts in this game will not show up in the normal notification systems (e.g. Front Page, Latest Game Posts, or email) and will only be visible by manually checking the game's threads.

Select 'custom' and 'Freeform Universal Classic' from the dropdowns when creating your character sheet. Edit your sheet and replace the prompts with the requested information. If you have trouble understand what goes where, see Magnus the Wagonbreaker for an example character.

About the localeFinn's Crossing is a bit of a melting pot since it is situated on what was formerly a river trade route. There are all kinds of folks who come through here. Some of them are wholesome, and some are the shady type. This means that your character can be any of the standard fantasy races that aren't considered an enemy of humanity. So elves, dwarves, fairy, catkin (or even humans!), whatever are ok. Orcs and goblins... probably not. I'll be posting a list of classes and races from NoteQuest in case anyone needs some inspiration. FU is flexible, though, so just using your own imagination is fine here.

The setting is pre-medieval society and iron age technology. If steel exists at all, it will be rare and mysterious.

Freeform Universal uses qualitative descriptors rather than numerical scores to define characters.
Name:
Concept: Who is your character? What is the "high concept", class, or archetype? Clichés are fine here, we just need a quick idea of it.

Body:
Mind:
Edge:
Flaw:
These are what Freeform Universal calls descriptors. For each of the specified features, provide a short & punchy tag that may help or hinder your character.

Gear: Two iconic items that your PC carries around.

Description: By now you should have a good idea who your PC is. Give me a few details about appearance, personality, whatever strikes you most about them.

Drives are the things that motivate your PC (player character). What do you want? What's keeping you from having it? What do you intend to do about it?

Relationships:
  • Describe an NPC (non-player character) you know from Finn's Crossing. Who are they to you? Why would they be happy (or unhappy) to see you again?
  • Envision and describe a feature of the town or the area around it. What strikes you about this point of interest? What have you heard?

Magic
If you are playing a Caster, specify your starting Domain (Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Order, Wild, or High Magic). You select 1 spell from that domain; the rest are assigned randomly. Such are the Winds of Magick. Add this information to your Notes section.

See the Spells section at the top of our Session 0 thread for more about how magic works in this world.

Stepping on Out
A few more details about our journey...

We'll assume your character carries a standard knapsack than can hold ten items. This is in addition to your primary weapon and any armor you might wear. One spot in your pack can hold 3 consumable items (rations, torches, etc).

Add 5 copper coins, 6 torches and three rations to your character notes. If you want bandages, extra torches or more rations, trade 2 coins for a stack of 3 and mark it on your sheet. Coins go into their own pouch, so you won't need to worry about how many slots they take up unless you have over a hundred.

Once characters are approved, feel free to commit a few paragraphs introducing yours in the [IC]Finn's Crossing thread. This optional; if you prefer you can wait until the main event begins instead.
