Some suggested that they hold the meeting in the tavern (The Stag at Sunset), some said town hall would be more appropriate, but in the end, Sister Inna prevailed, and the meeting was scheduled in the chapel.
The sun droops in the heavens as the village of Hillshire gathers. Oswing the chandler is first, as always, to pick out the best seat in the chapel. The Godric and Aelfwyn, the weavers. Walter the stonemason, Osbert the tanner, and Hawise the tavern keeper. The crowd grows, as does the noise in the sacred edifice. Old Hobb Puddlefoot plunks down in his usual pew and stretches his feet out in front of him. Several newcomers to Hillshire join the meeting as well: Orm, Lillit, Ivar, and Llewellyn.

Once the room is full to bursting, Sister Inna emerges to stand in front of the crowd. Nikkghak slips out behind Inna to take a position along the side wall.
[ +- ] Sister Inna
Sister Inna waves a hand in the air, "Thank you for gathering my friends and neighbors. Let's get started."

Cuthbert, the blacksmith, cups his hands around his mouth and shouts: "'Bout time, Sister! We've been waiting. You started the meeting late!" His wife places a hand on his arm and gives him a stern look.

"I truly apologize. I know that the news has troubled all of us. I may not be dealing with these recent events as well as others. I know that I..." Inna's voice catches, tears pool at the edges of her eyes. She shakes her head and straightens, "I'm sorry. We need to do something to recover our captured loved ones. We cannot allow this demonic faction to pollute our valley. We need to launch an expedition to rescue them."

Margery, the baker, stands, "Yes, but we don't even know where they took them." Several other villagers nod and then turn to look at Sister Inna again.

"That was true," Inna waves to Warin, "but Warin has some information that he would like to share. Come on up, Warin."

Warin the trapper stands slowly and waves off Inna's request to walk to the front. "I can speak from here. You all know me. I spend long bouts of time in the wilds, hunting and trapping. Recently I was tracking a deer north along the mountains and happened upon a group of robed individuals outside of the huge cave there." He looks around the crowd. "Some were guarding and several crews were carving ornate columns around the mouth of the cave."

Sister Inna coughs. "After talking to Warin and several eyewitnesses we believe that this is the same group that stole our friends."

"But what do you want us to do about it?" Cuthbert shouts.

"I am hoping that several brave souls will volunteer to travel north, find this cave, find out lost loved ones, and return them to the village." Sister Inna scans the crowd, searching for eyes with bravery, with the glint of adventure, those who would protect the weak and helpless. She crosses her arms.

Some of the village look around, others look towards the ground; the silence grows.

Lillit stands in the back of the chapel, shifting uncomfortably. Such places of Law and Sanctity had always been associated with violent persecution in her experience; usually, one of her faith only saw the inside of such a place while bound to a stake and set aflame. But she reminded herself that these people were different than those of her homeland far away, and thus far she had been proven right in this assumption.

She listened to the others speak of their neighbors snatched away by a demonic faction of robed people. She could not help but recognize the behavior from her own past, when she was a member of a serpentine cult of Shune that practiced kidnapping and human sacrifice as well. She had tried to stop such practices, but was driven out and barely escaped with her life. So now she finds herself impossibly far away, and yet, the same injustice is occurring once again. Perhaps this was Shune giving her a chance to succeed where previously she had failed. She could not save her friends back home, but perhaps she could help some of these folks instead?

She stepped forward and said, "I have come to your lands as a refugee from a similar cult, one that took innocent people and sacrificed them to their goddess. I tried to oppose them then, but failed. Perhaps I can succeed now. I have no love for such cults and would gladly see this one destroyed. I would volunteer to fight on behalf of my new home, if you’ll have me."

Orm knocks his wooden staff hard against the floor, thrice, to get everyone's attention.

His voice and demenor, youthful and pleasant, a sharp contrast to his looks, stern and haggard. "Hello everyone. I'm Orm. I only recently arrived to Hillshire, a business trip if you will, to consult with Father Marcus, but even in that short time realize the importance of what he means to everyone here."

Giving a sympathetic look to Sister Inna. "I'll assist in the rescue."

Sure, Father Marcus was a nice guy, villager sacrifice was just uncouth, and the ornate carvings certainly peaked his interest, but he was damned if some run of the mill cultists were going to rob him of his ultimate goal. you're not getting away that easy, father.

"You’ll do nowt about it, Cuthbert!" the old, plump halfling shouts back to the blacksmith. A man only suited to making swords, but too afeared to wield one.

He only took mild satisfaction in getting under the blacksmith’s skin. The two had a running tally on who could embarrass the other in the eyes of the Hillshire-folk!

"Leave it to the blow ins, and the very old!" the noble-for-a-halfling halfling says with a groan. He climbs to his feet with the assistance of the pew in front of him.

"Aye. Old Hobb Puddlefoot and a clutch of new faces will go and gather up our missing flock!" he says, puffing up his round chest for all to see! An old, but still proud, old Puddlefoot…

Ivar knowing what happened is thinking back to his childhood and his village being razed to the ground and everyone he loved killed. Hillshire has at least given him a place to stay and feels like home. Ivar stands "By my vow to Odin we will see these villagers back and safe." Looking around"Besides how could I go on with out Father Marcus trying to convert me from my Gods."
Aug 13, 2025 6:42 pm
Leave it to the stunned little settlement to gather like it did in chapel; a a place of compromise meetings due to Sister Inna's relentless, but calming influence and her uncanny charm. Her ways were at once again working again, as she was hoping for several brave souls to volunteer and it seemed they were forming up.

"I may be an outlander, perhaps to the people of Hillshire, but they've let me call it home, when my own was sacked, and I lost all that I had; I had my former Guardian Cormac to take me in and raise me up here, and people welcomed me as vest they could. The least I can do is volunteer to try and recover your people if you'll have me with you." I volunteer myself a part of the rescue mission. "Warin, is there anything more you can tell us of the cave and of the robed people?" I ask, wondering more about the captors who raided humble Hillshire and their motives, other than pure evil to have picked such an unassuming place for such an ambush and raid. At this point in life, having gone what I was through, I was not entirely surprised, however that there was such cruelty in the world. The source was perplexing, but that something would befall the place, it was not out of the question; like my own home being sacked in childhood, pain seemed to follow and haunt me.

Gods, but I’m the only one from old families to stand up…

The Halfling thinks unhappily. Had the place changed that much? The old Halfling looks around at those assembled in the pews.

Have all the others been taken in the attack?… he asks, frowning as he searching for familiar faces in the church!

Cuthbert stands, a scowl on his face. His wife pulls at his jerkin. "Now, that ain't fair, Hobb!" He shouts. "I would go, but I must see to my business. Not all of us have delusions."

Inna steps forward and waves Cuthbert down. "No need for raised voices in this sacred place, friends. Thank you Hobb and Ivar and Llewellyn and Lillit and Orm. We will provide you with what few supplies we can as you travel and of course, I will invoke the blessing St. Terragnis if you so desire." She turns to Warin, "How many days' ride to the mouth of the cave?"

Warin places a hand on his neck and rubs slowly. "Oh, I don't know day, day and a half if ye hurry." He looks at Llewellyn. "The cave used to be empty. Twas a good place to wait out a storm. Several winters ago, I found a bear and her cub holed up there." He nods as his mind wanders into the past. "But the place is swarming now with these cloaked and hooded fellows, I couldn't get close enough to get a good look without them noticing me. Some of them looked fairly tough to me."
Aug 14, 2025 12:58 pm
I nod to Sister Inna acknowledging her response. Supplies and a blessing. Gede was more my patron, but I wouldn't argue with a free blessing, now with the Gods at this time; it was unwise. I took what was being offered and it was a motley band of people and sparse supplies and some grim hope we could rescue the lost. Then there was the matter of the cave. I added myself in for what it was worth after Warin.

"It doesn't sound like it is too extensive of a cave; we should make haste. These poor victims will likely be taken for some fell ritual, or some sick sacrifice these robed people are up to," I suggest in way getting on with the recovery effort. "These strange cult-like bands of people, they exist in the outlands, too, raiding for victims to do their dark deeds. They'd make warbands of orcs or goblins or both to run down unsuspecting villages like mine."
Aug 14, 2025 4:58 pm
There were so many people in here. Nikkghak twisted uncomfortably in his place, lingering in the far corner of the chapel. The constant thrum of raised voices clogged the air, made him wish he could slink back and disappear in the shadows. As he was used to.

But things were different now. Father... Father Marcus was gone. And taken with him was damn near every trace of the warmth and safety that had always seemed so synonymous with this place. This was still his home. But now there was a hole in it it, a gaping, festering wound left behind in the wake of those... 'men' was too kind a word.

"I will go as well." He didn't raise his voice, he rarely did. A goblin like him was disquieting enough to people without shouting. Likely his voice didn't carry very far. But he stepped forward to take his place next to the other brave volunteers.
Aug 14, 2025 6:50 pm
Hobb says nothing further of Cuthbert’s business, though he wonders just how profitable it will be with the village’s population diminished as it is.

"I bet they’re not all that tough!" Hobb boasts! Bravado, to give those staying behind hope that they would be successful.

"If we sneak in and let loose a few more of Hillshire’s halflings, the fight will be done before dinner!" he says, with a belly laugh!
Aug 14, 2025 11:05 pm
Sister Inna gathers the group together and lines them up before the altar. Three humans, one dwarf, one goblin, and a halfling. Inna looks out to the crowd, "I will bestow upon our heroes a blessing from St. Terragnis and I will ask her to name our adventuring party." Inna lays her hands on Ivar and Llewellyn's shoulders, closes her eyes, and invokes her god. "Oh powerful, Terragnis, knight of righteousness and justice, bless these gathered here as they depart from our small village to rescue our friends and family. Bless them that they will be guided, that they will know right from wrong. Bless them that they might have their eyes opened to see things that may be hidden. Give them wisdom. Watch over them. I ask you, oh great Terragnis, to name this company." Her voice falters and she becomes suddenly quiet. Inna lifts her head towards the heavens, inclining her ear. She lifts her hands and steps back. "St. Terragnis has spoken to me and has named this covenant. The name that Terragnis has chosen is the Hillshire Wayfarers."

Lillit bows her head and remains silent as the blessing is bestowed, out of respect for their faith. Other gods and saints exist, after all, though she chooses to revere only Shune -- and Shune as she understands her, not as others do!

When the name of their endeavor is announced, she shrugs and says, "As good as any. Now, we must hurry; who knows what the cult has planned for the captives."
OOC:
When you say average speed travel would take a day, does that mean stopping to camp overnight?

Orm felt more upbeat at seeing Sister Inna "talking" to St. Terragnis. If they weren't able to rescue Father Marcus in time, at least he had a backup plan.

"Thank you Sister Inna, most appreciated. Well then Wayfarers, best to make haste."

The Hillshire Wayfarers. A decent enough name, even if it was the wrong god. I mumbled out an incomprehensible-to-others apology and prayer to Gede...something a bit wild from my days out in the outer lands not settled in a place like Hillshire, and hoped for the best betwixt the two. While my heart beat fast and my blood pumped furiously at times, I learnt caution in many things. A pursuit of the kidnapped, tracking people down seemed to be one of those things, like I had learned from Uncle Cormac. Yet, my fellow members of the group seemed to be urging haste in this instance of the pursuit, so it seemed there was little stopping the sense of urgency.

"I won't be one to stop everyone, if you want to make a speedy pursuit, but my mentor Cormac did teach me about tracking and the importance of a careful pursuit; I don't know if we should be so hasty and rush and fall into an ambush or a trap, like what happens so often with these sorts of things, or we could approach more carefully," I add my input to my partners.

Nikkghak stands, his posture a little straighter, head higher. The blessing of Saint Terragnis, bestowed upon a lowly goblin. He grips the small pendant hanging from his neck. Even with a motley group like this, now they surely could not fail.

"We will bring them back." Conviction ringing in every word he utters, in his mind he is already halfway out the chapel, ready to take the fight to those heathens.
Aug 16, 2025 7:48 pm
OOC:
I assume that we are leaving right now. Strap your swords on, kiddos.

Four out of six players voted on travelling as fast as possible. The Hillshire Wayfinders will travel at double walking speed. It will be a half-day journey and will place you reaching the cave around nightfall. To keep up the pace, the village gathers enough rations to cover the journey there, so you don't have to worry about rations while you travel, just while you are in the cave. You are travelling through a forest that is risky, so I will check three times, assuming that travelling takes you six hours. I will roll and then update this post.
The meeting breaks up, some villagers walk away returning to their homes, but others stay to see off the Hillshire Wayfinders. The morning is still mild, the sun occasionally covered by light cloud cover. A welcome breeze ruffles the leaves in the trees, and the sun shines playfully through the branches.

Sister Inna waves. "Please be careful! Our hope rests with you!"

Hobb leads the way, the party travelling two by two, and before long turns a bend in the trail and disappears from the view of the villagers.

After travelling for four uneventful hours, the Wayfinders begin to see spider webs hanging from trees, broken branches, and various detritus spread along the ground. In the trees, they hear the light padding of many feet. Looking up, they see two giant spiders, each has a bulbous abdomen and eight spindly legs. One is descending via a length of webbing, the other is perched on a tree branch ready to pounce.

Hobb, like many halflings, was more accustomed to muttering a prayer to Gede. Still, the church here had its own faith, and Hobb wasn’t one to turn his nose up at whatever help was offered.

"Aye! Eyes and ears peeled for an ambush. Many have tried, mind you, but there ain’t one that’s gotten the drop on old Hobb yet!" he says, slinging up his weapons and getting ready to depart.

Leading the volunteer column, Hobb shouts an urgent whisper back to the others when he starts to see webbing.

"Eyes sharp! Some of these things are big enough to try for Halfling!"

He’s too busy calling back his warning to see that the danger is already hanging overhead!

OOC:
No, it is not.

Hobb, you're up. Kill this spider!
Aug 22, 2025 6:52 pm
Emboldened by the death of the other spider, and clearly made of stern stuff, Hobb rushes at the final foe. Rush… as only an aged Halfling fighter could manage. If the thing was foolish enough to stand in Hobb’s way, the half man would surely bowl the arachnid over.

Mace twirling, he strikes!

Rolls

The spider (spider 2) screams and rears after Hobb hits it in the head with his mace. The blunt force pierces the elephantine hide, and blood issues forth. It turns away from Orm and lunges again at Hobb. With one of it's hairy legs, it pulls Hobb closer and sinks a fang into Hobb's thigh.
OOC:
Sorry Hobb. Once again, DC 12 CON save versus paralysis.

Then Llewellyn's turn. Finish him!

Rolls

Who will the Spider attack (1-3 Orm, 4-6 Hobb) - (1d6)

Once more, Llewellyn tried to swing his sword at the ever-enduring spider, hoping to end it once and for all. He hefted the hand and a half sword in his and and swung with purpose, hoping to sweep and strike at vulnerable flesh left exposed near him as the spider was between him and Hobb, not that it was stuck, perchance, but between the two, death was waiting, he hoped.

Rolls

Shoot, Llewellyn, tough roll.

Lillit's turn. Any spells left?
Aug 23, 2025 6:36 pm
Lillit is out of spells she could use, so she draws her dagger and thrusts it at the spider.

OOC:
I will give it to you Ivar, close enough, this spider needs to die.
Ivar's arrow buries itself into the skull of the arachnid.

And with an ear-numbing screech, the spider topples. Hobb jumps out of the way as the beast collapses in a jumble of legs, black ooze, and blood.

The Wayfinder's catch their breath as their first battle as a group comes to a close.
Aug 23, 2025 11:50 pm
"Nice finish lad!" Orm exclaims to Ivar as the spider falls. Taking out his dagger, the dwarf heads over to the corpse and with practiced ease quickly starts dissecting it for parts, taking some of the silk webbing, venom, and internal organs.

"Waste not, want not." he tells the group with a smile (while trying to hold his bile back). Pointing the dagger at the paralyzed members, "Someone should make sure they're still alive.", then continues sawing away.
Aug 24, 2025 12:16 am
"Thanks Orm, we survived our first test." Ivar will move to those who were bit and see what he can do for them."Anyone no anything about poison?"
Aug 24, 2025 1:56 am
Lillit sighs in frustration and fatigue. She cleans and sheathes her dagger and looks over the awful spider beast.

Without much fanfare, Hobb manages to throw himself out of the way, and then everything goes black for the pudgy Halfling.

Lillt looks over to see Hobb fall. She frowns and says, "We seem to be down one halfling. Here, someone help me with him..."

She bends down to move him into a more comfortable position and sees if there is anything she can do to revive him.

Ivar will move to help with Hobb."Orm, Llewellyn can you check on Nikkghak ?"
Aug 24, 2025 11:13 pm
OOC:
I didn't know that Hobb was that low on HP. Thanks for roleplaying that Hobb. He is stabilized now from Lillit's roll.

Yes, someone should check on Nikkghak.

I assume that we will roleplay some cleanup and then probably spend the night to recharge. Unless you want to press on to the cave.
Aug 25, 2025 12:25 am
"We should probably take our injured and move away from here and set up camp to recover some."
Aug 25, 2025 1:09 am
"Agreed," says Lillit.
Aug 25, 2025 1:39 am
Finished with the spiders, Orm cleans up and walks over to Nikkghak, mixing a viscous, green liquid in a small vial along the way. He kneels and pours the contents slowly down the goblin's throat, hoping the anti-venom he just created from the arachnid's parts will help.

Nikkghak's body slowly relaxes, and Orm watches as his eyes begin moving again.

Hobb gasps as he regains consciousness.

The group collectively cut down the cocooned bodies and search through the remains of their packs and clothes. In the remnants of the spider's meals, they find:
--a bag of smooth pebbles (worth 2cp)
--dusty, leather armor dyed black (worth 10 gp)
--two lustrous pearls (worth 40 gp each)

The Wayfinders move away from the webs and spider carcasses to find a clearing in the dense pine forest. They start a fire and eat some rations.
OOC:
I need the party to give up three torches to build the fire, and each hero needs to eat a ration. I assume that y'all will set up watches.
The party sleeps and rests through an uneventful night. They regain their strength and their nerves after the difficult battle with the spiders.
OOC:
I will let y'all post who is going to give up torches. You could roleplay what you're eating and divide up the loot, then I will post the next bit tomorrow. We will start with full health points and full spell arsenals.

The young priest gets to his feet unsteadily, his muscles still not fully responsive. "Thank you, Master Dwarf", he croaks out, then clears his throat. That elixir burned going down. "Not a very auspicious start to my first journey away from the chapel, I fear. I suspect I might be out of my depth here."

Nonetheless, he tries to get as much of a rest as possible, and rises early in the morn, eager to get going again. Every hour wasted was a danger for his kinsmen in the cult's clutches.
OOC:
Nikkghak can provide one torch to the fire. If it matters, he can take a watch during the night, since he didn't exactly over-exert himself in the previous encounter
Aug 25, 2025 5:18 pm
"At least now we know who the tastiest of us are!" Hobb says, as he coughs back to life.

"Cripes but they have big fangs!" he complains, as he is pulled back to his unsteady feet.
"Do you want a Halfling who’s teetering on the edge of death’s door watching over you while you sleep? I didn’t think so!" he says, as he tucks himself away for the night.
Aug 25, 2025 9:13 pm
"In the Shadowdark we are all out of our depth, young goblin."
OOC:
Later that night
"I have no torches to spare, just my lantern if you need it."

Not having lost his spells, Orm keeps watch during the night, keen eyes alert for any sign of trouble, spiders or otherwise.
Aug 25, 2025 10:46 pm
OOC:
Nikkghak is donating one torch. If y'all want a full rest to regain hit points and spells, then we need two more to create the campfire, and everyone needs to eat a ration. And a good idea to have Nikkghak take the full watch over night.

Or, I am totally okay not doing a full rest and just pressing ahead to the cave.
Aug 25, 2025 11:44 pm
"I will take a watch. I am still hale after that fight, others should rest up while they can; especially you two, Nikkghak, and Hobb." I mention as I sit down next to where we settle for a campsite.

I begin to pick away at a ration, nothing exciting, but dried and salted meat, nuts, cheese, berries and some idle forage from along the way. It did the job of filling a stomach and keeping me fuelled, which was all that mattered.
OOC:
I can donate a torch to the fire.
Aug 26, 2025 12:05 am
Ivar will eat his ration thinking of the fight they with the spiders."I will take a middle watch. I can only sleep a few hours at a time."
OOC:
I will also donate my torch.
Aug 26, 2025 12:43 am
Lillit also expresses a desire to rest for the night, though she too is willing to take a watch. She has no torch to donate, though, only her lantern and oil.
Aug 26, 2025 12:49 am
OOC:
Okay, that is three torches (one from Nikkghak, Llewellyn, and Ivar). Make sure that each of you eats a ration. Hit points and spells are refreshed.
The dawn breaks cold and fog-filled. Dew drips from Nikkghak's leather gauntlet; he stares into the dying embers of the campfire as his companions begin to stir. A crow caws above the camp, turns towards the north, and takes wing.

The Hillshire Wayfinders break camp, gather their belongings, and steel themselves against the cold and damp. They return to their trek, pushing through the increasing underbrush and brambles until they hear voices ahead. Ivar signals to the group to crouch and hide as they near a small clearing. A muddy trail leads through the trees and brush to a jagged opening in the huge rock face. On either side of the cave door, two identical pillars carved into the rock depict a horned and fanged beast, in one hand a battle axe, in the other the head of one of the beast's foes.

Two brown robed figures stand on either side of the door, arguing...

Sentry 1: "I can't believe that you talked back to the master-at-arms."

Sentry 2: "It weren't me fault, Raffe, honest. He just ain't understand me meaning."

Sentry 1: "Don't say 'ain't,' Silas. You sound like a country bumpkin."

Sentry 2: "I'll say ain't if I wants to, Raffe!"

Sentry 1: "You will not if you are going to be on sentry duty with me."

Sentry 2 crosses his arms and slumps against the rock face. "You're mean, Raffe!"

Sentry 1: "Well, I'm sorry, Silas, but everyone else is celebrating, and I'm stuck out here with you. I guess I'm just hungry." He pulls his cloak closer around himself. "And cold."

Sentry 3: "Will you two shut up! We're supposed to be on guard duty! No more talking."

Sentry 1 and 2: "Sorry!"
OOC:

Next is Hobb.
Aug 28, 2025 4:28 pm

OOC:
Excellent, Hobb. Great use of halfling invisibility!

Next is Lillit.
Aug 29, 2025 3:51 am
Lillit moves to where she can see the sentries and begins to whisper arcane words, slowly moving her hands in precise ways as she does so. She attempts to cast Shadowdance, conjuring an illusion from shadowstuff.

She successfully channels her magic, and a human young woman that resembles one of the captured villagers steps out of the woods off to the far side of the clearing. She says, "Ha, I’ve escaped, and you’ll never catch me! When they find out you’ve let me escape, they’ll hang you for sure! Haha!" then the (illusory) woman steps into the foliage!
OOC:
The sight of an escaped captive mocking them and reminding them of how much trouble they’ll be in if they don’t catch her? Hopefully that’s enough.

Shadowdance: "You spin shadowstuff into a convincing visible and audible illusion at a point within near. The illusion can be as big as a person and can move within a near range of where it appeared. The illusion can't affect physical objects. Touching the illusion reveals its false nature."

The two sentries at the doorway straighten and direct their attention to the shadowdance illusion.

Sentry 1 (Raffe): "Wha...Hey!" He takes a step forward. "Who's that? You let them sneak out, you oaf!"

Sentry 2 (Silas): " Oh, no!" Silas pulls a dagger from his belt. "What'll we do?"

Sentry 1 (Raffe): "Well, go get her. Don't just stand around with your mouth open."

Sentry 2 (Silas): "What're you going to do?" He shuffles from one foot to another.

Sentry 1 (Raffe): "Just go!" He pushes, Silas. "I'm going to guard the door so no one else gets out."

Sentry 2 (Silas) walks towards the bushes and trees that signal the edge of this little hollow. Before he pushes through the brush, he looks back, just for a moment, and then parts the branches and searches for the "escaped woman."
OOC:

I didn't have the niceties of nimble feet, but I figured I would use the distraction caused by Lillit's magic to try and sneak further to a hiding place toward where the captives were with the rest of the Wayfarers. Along the way, I try to pick up a small stone and toss it in the in the opposite direction I'm going to create a distraction trying to time it with the illusion to distract the sentries and further confuse them as I advance.
Aug 30, 2025 3:55 pm
OOC:
Sounds good, Llewellyn.
Sentry 1 (Raffe) hears a rock hit the stone wall to his right. He turns to follow the sound and searches.
OOC:
Side note, since Llewellyn mentioned it in his post. You've only seen sentries. No captives in this area.

The sentries are next, but since they have been distracted and we haven't really entered combat yet, I am going to move on to Orm.

One sentry is in the bush. The other sentry is looking away, but still by the door. And y'all haven't found Sentry 3 yet.

You are fine moving up to the doorway. The other sentries are occupied and don't see you, so I won't require a roll.
Orm, sprints to the doorside, crouching low and peeks inside. Sentry 1 (Raffe) looks away from where Orm is crouching.

Carved rock gives way to placed flagstone. You see an entrance with three paths forward (one to the North, one to the East, and one to the South). Looming in the center of this crossroads is a large statue of a skull. The light from outside helps you to see that there is writing at the base of the statue, but you cannot make out exactly what it says. Ivar straightens next to the sentry (Sentry 3), grabs his shoulder, and plunges his sword into the sentry's back. Blood stains his brown robe as the point of the sword exits his belly. He attempts to cry out, but chokes on his own blood as he slumps to the floor.

Sentry 4 turns and stares at Ivar, agape. Even in this low light, Ivar can see that the sentry's mouth is devoid of a tongue, and he seems to have multiple piercing holes around his mouth. He places one hand in a pouch tied to his waist, and it comes out covered in blood. Sentry 4 runs to the statue of the skull, places his hand on it, leaving a bloody handprint, then runs down the hallway heading East and is swallowed by the dark.
OOC:
Great kill, Ivar!

Next up is Nikk.
Sep 1, 2025 7:29 pm
OOC:
Nikkghak would try to get past the distracted sentries as well. It sounds like sentry nr 4 is out of reach? In that case, can I quickly look over the blood-marked skull, see if Nikk can determine if it serves a purpose?
Sep 1, 2025 8:44 pm
Nikkghak quickly slips into the entryway. He hears voices raised in celebration to the East, and then the click of a door, and the voices muffle.

To the North, Nikkghak hears faint snoring; to the South, barking and fearful cries.

The large skull statue dominates the room. Nikkghak can see many bloody handprints and an inscription on the backside of this statue, but without more light, Nikk won't be able to read the inscription properly.
OOC:
Yes, Sentry 4 has moved into the room to the East.

Hobb slips back into view just a few feet from Ivar. While invisible, he had witnessed the man make short work of the guard.

"Aye. Good work!" he says, with a nod.

"That there statue is up to no good!" he said, and the halfling hairs on the back of his halfling neck stood up.

He begins to try push and heave and push the thing over, hoping to disrupt whatever purpose it might serve… even if was just for morale!

OOC:
Yes, it is somewhat confusing, isn't it? Probably my fault. Sentry 3 is dead. Sentry 2 (bushes) is now dead. Sentry 1 is alive and still distracted at the door. And Sentry 4 moved further into the cave, yes.
Sentry 2 jerks back as if bitten by a snake. His eyes cloud over, and he whips back and forth. "No, no, no, no." He falls to the ground, the wound overtaking him.

Sentry 1 hears and turns back towards to peer out into the valley.
OOC:
Nice kill, Lillit. All we have left is the sentry by the door.

Llewellyn, you are up.
Sep 4, 2025 10:50 pm
Seeing that the first sentry was alerted to Lillit's action, I take sword into hands and go after that sentry so as to not be discovered. I try to approach from the rear to flank the figure and try to stick the sentry through the ribs, hoping he is looking the other way distracted by so many things up to thus point.

Sep 4, 2025 11:13 pm
Sentry 1 begins to turn back around towards the sound in the bushes when he feels a sharp pain in his side. Llewellyn's blade slips cleanly between his ribs, and he falls to the ground.
OOC:
I assume that people will search the bodies (you have three dead sentries). Here is what you find...
- Three brown robes, although two of them have bloody holes in them
- Three daggers (just standard, if you want them)
- Three pouches that contain blood (1 HP worth)
- And the following crumpled parchment that Sentry 1 was carrying...
Tenants of Faith:

One: Honor our God, and His altars, with blood.

Two: Obey until you can usurp. Listen to red and black robes.

Three: Only the strongest will survive.

Remember, neophytes are not allowed passed the skulls in the Great Hall.
OOC:
That combat was excellent. Great work everyone.

Orm, your turn.
Sep 5, 2025 4:02 am
"Perhaps we can continue the deception a bit longer with some of us putting on these robes, see how far it gets us inside? Or try to exchange them for some red and black ones, based on their importance in this note." as he gently kicks one of the downed bodies.
Sep 5, 2025 9:37 am
"That fourth sentry had no tongue and holes around his mouth. There is some crazy dung going on around here."Looking at the the skull"He also dipped his hand in the blood and put his handprint on the skull as he went bye it."
Sep 5, 2025 10:01 am
"It’s good make, that." Hobb says, patting the statue after failing to push it over!

"Aye! Get them robes on you, and take me prisoner! Doubt they take halfling members!" he says, eyeing up the robes and seeming to find them too long!
Sep 5, 2025 12:40 pm
Lillit approaches the cave, now that the sentries have been dispatched, and examines the blood and the skull. Curious, she dips a hand into the blood as well, and touches the skull.
Sep 5, 2025 12:47 pm
Orm sees Lillit examining the blood and walks over. As if from a great distance the whispered words Blood for the Blood God! enter his mind. The dwarf shakes it off and tries to remember if this ritual with the blood and skull appeared in any of his studies.

Rolls

INT - (1d20+3)

Sep 5, 2025 1:02 pm
I shake my head, seeing how my fellow Wayfarers dipped their hands in the blood and placed it on the skull. Hopefully the blood was from animals and not from some potential victim further inside. I wasn't willing to dip my hand inside the blood and engage in the captors' ritual. Wearing the sentries' robes was a decent idea, as long as they weren't too damaged in the melee that we just engaged in, and I looked at the robe the sentry I had dispatched to see how well the robe had fared to see if I could put it on, or if it was too bloodied and torn to make for a decent disguise.
Sep 5, 2025 1:42 pm
OOC:
The robes are not so ruined or tattered that they would not serve as disguises. It's a good idea. So, which three are going to don the robes?

Orm, you do remember something from your studies that would help. Blood rites and a blood god refer to Ramlaat. He is the pillager, the barbaric, the horde. Many orcs worship him and live by the blood rite, a prophecy that says only the strongest will survive a coming doom. And despite Llewellyn's concern, you are pretty sure that the blood in these pouches is not from animals.
Lillit touches the skull with her bloodied hand. She feels a release of energy and senses that the way forward is now opened to her.
OOC:
I will describe the entryway again.
A large skull statue, covered in bloody handprints (including Lillit's now). The statue has an inscription on the side facing away from the door. (Light is needed to properly be able to read it). Many hallways. To the North, you hear faint snoring. To the East, you hear many voices raised in celebration (which is also the direction that Sentry 4 went), to the South, you hear barking and fearful cries.

The hallways and the rest of this cave are plunged in darkness. It seems that members of this cult can see in the dark.
OOC:
I'll give y'all a moment to plan, choose a direction, and decide who will hold the torch and then we will return to initiative order so everyone gets a turn "around the table."
Sep 5, 2025 3:57 pm
Nikk looks over the tattered remains of the cultist's robes with distaste. "Don't suppose they have a lot of goblin members either? Probably better served on someone else.

East is were we need to go, but perhaps it might be wise to get our bearings first, check out the other tunnels to ensure our escape does not become blocked?"

"This is an altar to the blood god Ramlaat. Mostly orc worshipped, not sure why these humans are involved."

one of your pals, father? Sounds like he'd make for an awful drinking companion.

"We need light to move ahead, no way around it." Orm unclips the prepped lantern from his side, and moves the knob a bit to light it. He keeps the shutter down about halfway to limit the amount for now. Stepping over to the altar's side, he reads the words inscribed.
Sep 5, 2025 8:28 pm
OOC:
Smart idea, Orm. The lantern will be nice since you will be able to open and close the shutters based on need.

Here is how I am going to handle light because a 60-minute timer for the lantern isn't realistic in play-by-post. I straight-up stole this from Rumo. Each round, I will roll a die to see if the light source goes out. I will start with a d8, when I hit a 1, then I will go down to a d6, then a d4. When (if) I hit a 1 on a d4, then the light goes out, and another one will need to be lit, or I get to spread chaos. Hopefully, that works for people. But we will have to stay in initiative order to make it work.
Inscription on the Statue:
The price of entry is blood, and it shall be paid, one way or another...
Sep 5, 2025 10:39 pm
Ivar surely doesn't like that statue one bit and not want to put his hand in the blood but will if he has to."I will don one of the robes."
Sep 6, 2025 12:08 am
OOC:
Let's vote on the direction the group will go in first.

Which direction are the Wayfinders going?

North: Faint Snoring
East: Many voices raised in celebration
South: Barking, fearful cries
Sep 6, 2025 4:41 am
OOC:
I was wondering how you'd implement the real-time effect w. light. Works for me.
Sep 6, 2025 12:55 pm
OOC:
Yes, it works well in our other game.
Sep 6, 2025 2:25 pm
"Could our captive lot be to the South? I hear dreadful crying in that direction; perhaps it is best we travel there. Perhaps they are held in a pen, there, with a fee holding them back, guarding them. Whatever it is, it doesn't sound good." I ask, proposing the idea to the Wayfarers. "They sound like they are celebrating their ill-gotten gains now, so the moment to recover our people is now, while they are distracted."
Sep 6, 2025 5:08 pm
Lillit takes up one of the robes and dons it, then gestures to the south, saying, "Yes, our captives may be there… Let us go."
Sep 6, 2025 5:59 pm
"Agreed, if we can save the captives and lessen our chances of being found, all the better."

"Stay alert." Orm whispers as he leads the way.

Alrighty, we will keep the same initiative order as before, only we will have Orm act first as y'all move into the room.
1. Orm
2. Ivar
3. Nikk
4. Hobb
5. Lillit
6. Llewellyn

If we get into battle again, then we will reroll.

I have Ivar, Lillit, and Llewellyn disguised in the robes (I couldn't see who took the third one, but it makes sense that Llewellyn would, so I am running with it.)

The following characters have been infected with Blood Lust: Ivar, Nikk, Hobb, Llewellyn, and Orm.
Blood Lust
Use your action to attack the nearest creature (with ADV), or take 1d4 damage.
OOC:
So, if you don't attack something/someone with your action, then you will roll a 1d4. I will let each of you handle that.
As the Hillshire Wayfarers approach the room to the south, the sounds of barking and cruel laughter grow in volume. Orm opens the door slowly and closes the shutter on his lantern so it only emits a little light.

Two red-robed figures sit at a wooden table, jeering at an old woman cowering in the southwest corner of the room from an emaciated dog chained to the south wall. Four cages line the west wall, one holds another dog, and the rest are empty.

Orm, no. You don't lose your turn, but if you don't attack, then the blood lust takes damage.

For those who are afflicted, remember that the statue said that "The price of entry is blood, and it shall be paid, one way or another..."

Ivar's turn.

OOC:
Question first, Dressed in the robe do I have a chance at a backstab here? Like they won't really pay attention since I have the brown robe on?
Sep 8, 2025 10:03 am
"The price of entry is blood, is it? You’d think that their blood would suffice." Hobb says, pointing to the fallen cultists at the doorway.

Still, something had his back up.

"Just make sure I can get my hands free to swing at them!" he reminds the others, as they "take him prisoner."

OOC:
Yes, dressed in the robes, you should be fine. They are distracted by their "sport" of watching the dog terrorize the old woman.

Side note: those of you who have been living in Hillshire for a while recognize this old woman. She is one of the villagers who was captured. If y'all choose to release the villagers, we will assume that they can make it back safely, so we don't have to watch over them.

The mastiff barking at the old lady turns and tugs against its chain, barking at the violence before it. It's tug breaks the chain loose from the wall. The mastiff in the cage also barks loudly.

Nice, Hobb. Doggo is incapacitated.

Alright, Lillit, your turn.

OOC:
Finish him off, Llewellyn? It's your turn.
Sep 12, 2025 5:14 pm
Hopefully, all this noise and bloodletting won't ruin our cover, I ruminate on our barely-used disguises.

I draw my blade and move to stab the struggling red robe, hoping to finish off the remaining threat in the room. I try to make my cut clean so as to preserve the robe as much as possible to use as a disguise for anyone else that might want it.

Llewellyn's well-oiled blade slides easily between the neck and shoulder blade of the final cult hunter. He slouches and falls to the floor, dead.

"Oh my! Don't hurt me. I just want to go home." The old woman cowers, putting her hands in front of her.
OOC:
Those from the village recognize this person. Her name is Madge. Her husband died several years ago, and she lives comfortably in the village. Often she helps with odd sewing jobs (darning socks and repairing torn trousers.

Searching the bodies you find...
- Two red robes (have holes in them, but will serve)
- Two rusted daggers
- 4 gold

On the table sit two bottles with liquid in them. One is blue, one is red.
OOC:
Feel free to act out of order right now. When we are ready to move on, we will return to Orm's turn.

As I said earlier, if you want to release the villagers, I will just say that they can return to the village safely to save time. You talk them through leaving the dungeon...etc.

OOC:
Lillit would like a red robe if everyone is cool with that.
Sep 13, 2025 8:02 pm
OOC:
Oh, true...keys...LOL. Lillit finds keys! I can't believe that I forgot that.
Madge rubs her wrists. "Thank you! Thank you!" She sits up and then kneels. "I know that there is a room with prison cells. I was there before." She attempts to point, but then shakes her head. "I don't remember the direction; they blindfold us when they move us around."
OOC:
Everyone gains 1 XP for rescuing a villager!
Sep 13, 2025 8:13 pm
Ivar will pick up the bottle of blue liquid remove the stopper and take a whiff. He will also take a dagger. He will look over at Madge"Do you remember the turns you took?"
Sep 13, 2025 8:17 pm
Ivar sniffs the blue potion, and it has a fresh, sweet, floral scent with camphoraceous undertones.

Madge turns and stutters. "I...I...I" She shakes her head. "I just can't remember."
Sep 13, 2025 9:59 pm
"Well, we know what to look for, if not where, perhaps these robes can be repressed to help us infiltrate the area if we have to some searching," I state, sheathing my sword after the grisly business was done and offering the red robe to someone in their number who is currently robeless.

"Madge, let your mind be eased, we're here to rescue you, not harry you with too many questions; if you can't remember, we'll find the rest on our own. If you can make your way back to Hillshire safely, now is the chance!"
Sep 13, 2025 10:31 pm
It smells pleasant so I will take a sip.
Sep 13, 2025 11:43 pm
Ivar immediately feels groggy and finds his strength failing him. He kneels, then sits, and then falls back asleep.
OOC:
Ivar will be asleep for 1 hour (I halved it since you just sipped rather than drank the whole thing. Super potent sleeping potion, it would appear. Damage will wake him back up.

There is a door to push further into the dungeon, or y'all can go back the way you came. I will let a couple more people post if they want to and then we'll get back to initiative order.

Sep 14, 2025 12:02 pm
"Aye, give him a slap. That’ll wake him up and hopefully have him remember the lesson." Hobb jokes, standing over the battered dog he had put down.

"Terrible thing, that. Nice old dog and all. But thems the way of things!" he says, with a heaving sigh.

He crosses to the dog still in the cage and puts the back of his hand up to the bars. Close enough for a sniff, but not for a snap!

"Come here, lad!" he says to the dog.
Sep 14, 2025 6:09 pm
Orm smells the contents of the red potion and instantly recognizes the scent.
OOC:
It is a healing potion (1d6 hp). I'll let Orm reveal that to the group.
The dog in the cage tentatively approaches the bars to smell Hobb's hand. Hobb can tell that this animal has long been abused and is extremely wary.
Sep 14, 2025 6:30 pm
Lillit smiles wickedly and slaps Ivar. If it rouses him, she stands back and says, "Consider yourself lucky; men usually must pay for that service."
Sep 15, 2025 1:25 am
OOC:
Alrighty, let's return to initiative order. I assume that y'all release Madge. Make sure that you record your 1 xp. Also, don't forget about blood lust if you are infected.

- Llewelyn is wearing a brown robe

Orm peeks. The noise and chaos are distracting. This is the kitchen. Orms sees a large, glum Orc chopping meat with a huge cleaver. A sweaty halfling removes trays of bread from the oven. There are trays of delicious food on the table. You can hear sobs from the pantry.

"Ya better hurry up with yer bellyaching. Thems going to get angry if they don't get their food soon." The orc shouts, and you recognize the same voice you heard yelling before. He beats his cleaver on the pantry door, and sobbing intensifies for a time.

Hobb, understanding the wiles of the halfling, wheels around, swinging his mace and catches the halfling baker in the teeth. The cult baker reappears. Teeth fall from his agape mouth, and his nose is crushed. He falls in a heap, dead.
OOC:
Here is what you find as you search the room on the next turns...
- The Butcher had a giant meat cleaver (essentially a greataxe, but you could take it if you want an interesting story behind your weapon)
- The Baker had a rolling pin with a detachable dagger as one of the handles (essentially a club/dagger combo)
- Two more red robes, so more people can be disguised
- 5 gold
Trays of food sit steaming, ready to be taken into the main hall. You haven't heard the sobbing in the pantry for a minute.

A teenage woman is curled up on the floor, pushed against the shelves. She holds her head in her hands and looks up as Lillit opens the door.
OOC:
This woman is also from the village.

Go ahead and take an action, Lillit.

And Llewllyn, go ahead and take your turn.
Sep 19, 2025 4:03 am
Lillit recognizes the woman, so she says, "Come, dear, we are from the village and we are freeing you. We've already freed several. Come out, please. It's safe; we slew the orc out here. Are you ok?"
Sep 19, 2025 2:22 pm
The woman looks up. "Oh, it's you. Thank goodness." She stands tentatively and fidgets with her hands as she speaks. "I think I am okay." She walks out of the pantry. "They were forcing me to bring food to the main hall, and all of the cultists are having a feast in there to celebrate capturing so many to use for their rituals." She looks in disgust at the orc. "They drain us of our blood." She extends a hand to Lillit. "My name is Matilda. I recognize some of you from the village."

"Aye, Matilda is that you?" Hobb says, standing over the ruined and fallen Halfling.

"Best you regain your strength before trying to go too far. Madge is not long gone! You eat something to get your legs back under you, and try catch her." he says, trying his best to sound soft!
Sep 19, 2025 6:56 pm
"Matilda, hello, It is Llewellyn. I know I lived on the outskirts of Hillshire, but do you remember me? Anyway, do you happen to know where the rest of your number are, the other captives? We are here to rescue all of them. Made couldn't remember where the area was, but perhaps you can, since you've been out more? Tell us more about this blood ritual; these people seem sickly obsessed with blood," I query Matilda while trying to reassure her we are here to help.

I grit my teeth as the strange effects of the cave curse comes to affect me, trying to resist the worst of it; not willing to strike someone with reckless abandon. I suspect even as I ask, the blood ritual is part of their thirsty issue, it's some cursed either, or dark bargain where they have chosen to make it so they must draw blood, or face pain themselves.

"Damn it, damn this place...as we proceed, we should try using our disguises more convincingly to get to the captives; act as a unit of cultists, otherwise, why dress up?"

OOC:
Is there another door out of this room? And any chance we could get a map that shows all the rooms we've visited so far? I'm having trouble visualizing where they are in relation to each other, and to the skull entrance.

OOC:
I am sorry, drgqwen, you are totally right. Here you go...

OOC:
Y'all are in the room at the bottom right, and yes, there is another door.

Matilda looks at the ground. "Um, I'm really sorry, but I haven't seen much other than this room, the great hall, and the room with the cages." She points to the North. "The cages are that way, past the great hall."
OOC:
I am going to call Matilda released to the village. Everyone earns 1 xp. I will also say that your group investigates the hallway. It is empty and leads to the door to the great hall. A quick peek reveals a bunch of tables, several villagers, and a bunch of robed figures laughing, drinking, eating, and tormenting the villagers.
[ +- ] Towards the Great Hall
OOC:
I will also say that the center hallway from the skull statue leads to the same great hall.

Ivar will grab the orc and drag him into the pantry"Someone grab the baker and stash him also into the pantry." Looking around "Grab those other red cloaks and let us go have a meal."
Sep 22, 2025 8:51 am
"The blood is hot in here! I don’t know that the cloak will keep me from cracking a cultist’s skull for too long!" Hobb says, in an unusually graphic bit of language.

Hadn’t he spoken of clubbing* and not cracking back when they had been sent by the village?…

Lillit whispers, "What is our plan? Infiltrate the great hall and kill the cultists? How can we do so in a way that tilts things further in our favor?"
Sep 22, 2025 5:35 pm
"Perhaps we can fool them into believing orders of a prisoner transfer," I reply to Lillit. "Perhaps make like there usefulness is worn here and we're here to supervise the transfer away from the cave. We can lead at least the captive, and some of the more gullible out, and ambush them and free our captives where we have the advantage...otherwise, it's sneakery and skullduggery within, and I don't know if we can keep doing that...their rejoicing has to end here at some point and they have to have some overall objective; perhaps someone in the great hall knows more, but otherwise it looks like the room with the cages has many of Hillshire's number."
Sep 22, 2025 5:36 pm
"Good idea, Ivar", Nikk mumbles as he helps stash away the bodies. He then sneaks over to take a look in the great hall. "Not sure I can get in there inconspicuously, but perhaps someone else?"

Then, looking back at Ivar, an idea strikes him, and a very goblinish grin spreads across his face. "Say, did someone wiser than me remember to bring along that sleeping draught?"
OOC:
Is it possible to tell rough numbers of the cultist, are we talking like 4-5, or more like 10+?

Also, does Nikk recognize Father Marcus among the captives in the great hall?
Sep 22, 2025 5:46 pm
Orm grins as he follows along Nikk's thinking. "Aye, I've got it right here." patting his belt pouch. "Ideally, if we can slip this into their drink and have a toast after, get them all at once so as not to rouse suspicion."

"Hobb, perhaps your invisibility, a most remarkable thing by the way, can assist us?"
OOC:
were we able to see if there's essentially a punch bowl, or central source where the alcohol is being distributed from?

They must be doing so! I conclude, hastily, and rush to my companions, namely the robed ones' sides. I settle in as they enter and prepare to drink, if necessary, amongst them in a toast, but defer to the red robes; hoping we get several asleep, and perhaps we can find some orders amongst the robed ones here...some reasoning for the capture in the first place, a sense to the evil at hand.

Then the RED cultist falls back in his chair. "What is happening?" The final red-robed cultist slurs her words as she falls against the villager next to her.

Lillit nods in agreement with Ivar and adds, "Tell us what you know and then you can head out. We've saved several others already who you can catch up with on their trip back home."

She examines the unconscious red robed individuals, checking them for possessions. If they have a blood pouch, Lillit puts her hand in it and places her bloody hand mark on the skulls at the eastern end of the hall.

"I'm needed elsewhere..." I grunt, leaving the rest of the brown robes behind, I rejoin my Wayfarers, and help free the captives.

"There is that other room we scouted with cages and tables where more captives are held, we'll have to go there, next, but what do we do with these people? Leave them be?" I ask.

I look at Lillit performing her own performance of the blood rite at the skull altar, and grimace.

"You do well at portraying a cultist in disguise," I remark uneasily, set on avoiding the act myself.

Where did that blood come from? Some of Hillshire's very villagers we are trying to save? I couldn't use their blood to mark the cursed altar.

Sep 29, 2025 5:23 pm
Looking at the red robed figures, "Logical move is to slit their throats, they'll only end up being a problem at a later time to us or someone else."

Sighing, "But, I can't do it. Pragmatism does not make me a monster."

Following suit, he applies his previously bloodied finger to the skull statue, "Hopefully that's the end of that.", then casts Detect Magic around the room to see if there is anything useful.

Hobb only nods as the grim work is carried out. They’d have done the same or worse to his group, of that he was sure.

"Don’t you suppose they’d have something to stop the bleeding?" Hobb says. The cult was intent on causing wounds, but surely they needed to reverse the wounds at times.

She moves in that direction, studying the skulls front and back.

I will use verified cultist blood to alieve the Blood Lust, so since we're killing cultists, I'll borrow cultist blood. I just didn't want to take anonymous blood that the cultists were using. So I'll do the skull ritual thing to end the curse. If I could get a heal so I'm full again, that would be great, since I'm perpetually at 1 hp. I'd upgrade to a red robe, too as well sonce there's an opportunity.

Orm dons the remaining red robe. He takes out the red potion and hands it to Hobb, "Pass it around to those who need it. A sip should be enough."

Great work, everyone! No one is afflicted with the bloodlust anymore.
Lillit sees that the skulls in front of the doors are similar, but not exact copies of the skull at the beginning of the cave. There is no inscription on these versions.
[ +- ] Hallway Outside the Great Hall
The next hallway terminates in three doors. The Hillshire Wayfinders sneak around and listen carefully at each, testing out the door knobs. The door to the South is locked, and a careful ear hears nothing beyond. From the door to the East, the sound of ominous chanting emanates; this door is also locked. The door to the North is not locked. You hear clinking chains and dripping water.

OOC:
Ivar would have thieves' tools if y'all want to pick locks. I will wait a little bit before I post about the next room to see if you want to change course and pick locks rather than going into the rooms with the sounds of clinking chains.
Oct 2, 2025 1:11 am
"So clinking chains or would you like me to pick the lock on the south door?"
Oct 2, 2025 5:47 am
Lillit shrugs and says, "We will do both, so let's start with clinking chains, yeah?"

She moves to the door and looks to her companions, ready to open it.
Oct 2, 2025 11:54 am
"They’re not like to hear us with all that chanting!" Hobb mentions, on the issue of lock picking. The silent southern door was a different problem.

"Let’s see what’s clanking and then hope they’re still making noise when we get back!" he says, gathering up his mace and shield to press forward!
Oct 2, 2025 12:16 pm
"All agreed, then. These cultists didn't have any keys with them for the locks, surprising..."

While I don't have my sword out, I keep my hand on the hilt beneath the robe in case things descend into violence again, hoping our disguises will be of use.
Oct 2, 2025 10:47 pm
A wall of rusted, brittle-looking bars crosses the room. A locked cell door and a floor of straw. Behind the bars sit three male humans and a woman who seems to have elvish ancestry.

The robed and hooded Wayfinders enter the room, and the woman grunts and turns away from the bars.

From the door to the East, you hear the sound of a lashing whip, a stifled grunt of pain, and faint hissing.

Lillit too moves to the bars and looks in at the prisoners. Villagers? Other innocents? She says, "We've already freed many captured villagers. Here..." She gives clear and simple directions back to the exit through safe spaces. If that's not possible, she quickly accompanies them to the exit.
Oct 3, 2025 7:34 pm
OOC:
Do we know when to stop looking? As in how many villagers they took? If we're natives to Hillshire should we be able to recognise a captive immediately? I don't know how big Hillshire is.
I move toward the east door, listening to hear what signs of activity there are on the other side. Work, or...torture? The hissing was hopefully defiance and not some kind of beast the cultists had on hand, but in case, I had my hand on my sword and I leaned cautiously, ready to jump back, if someone...or something on the other side was about to come through.
Oct 3, 2025 9:01 pm
Nikk looks over the prisoners quickly and, assuming they have no severe injuries, he then moves to cover Llewellyn as he moves to the eastern door. He readies himself for a grim sight, unsure whether he's willing to find out what's behind this next door.

Hobb crosses to nearer the sound of the whipping also, handling his mace for the others to see.

"Best we put an end to that whipping, I reckon. If we three get at him at once, he’ll be down before he knows what hit him." he says to the others.

"Ready? Three, two…"
Oct 4, 2025 2:30 am
OOC:
Sorry, Orm. I totally missed that. Too much going on. Yes, when you listened to the chanting, you heard a deep hypnotic-sounding voice. You know that they were chanting about Ramlaat, blood, and sacrifice.
Ivar makes quick work of the lock on the bars and opens the door. The villagers (from Hillshire) brighten as they are released. The Elvish woman steps forward, speaking to both Ivar and Lillit, "You've been rescuing villagers? Have you seen my Tyrus? They took him earlier, and I don't know where." This elf introduces herself as Kara. She explains that Tyrus is a blacksmith apprentice, and when they came to take him, the cultist in the black robe pointed and said that they needed to convert the strongest one. "Please, you must save him."
OOC:
I will assume that y'all are going to release all of them. Although you can continue to talk to Kara if you want. Everyone earns 4 XP. I haven't been counting. How much XP are we up to now? Should be getting close.
Llewellyn, Nikkghak, and Hobb open the door heading to the East. A Drow woman stands over an older man who's strapped to the table. Two red-robed figures spectate gleefully. Seems like there is equipment storage on the North wall. Nikkghak looks around Llewellyn and immediately recognizes the man on the table. It is Father Marcus! Bloody welts cover his skin. His eyes are glazed over as he fights through the pain. He does not look well.

The Drow straightens as she looks from Llewellyn, Nikkghak, and Hobb. "Who are you!" She looks to her red-robed companions. "Looks like we have intruders. Gut them!" She raises a finger and points. In her other hand, she readies a three-pronged whip with what seems to be snake heads on the end of each popper.

Lillit looks at Ivar and asks first, "Are you OK?" Then, when offered the black robe, she smiles and says, "Very well. It's true that I have experience with blood magic and cults, even if I myself am not a practitioner of dark magics like that, so I suppose I can fake it fairly well. Thank you." She accepts the black robe and quickly changes into it, handing her red robe to anyone who would like it.

She also picks up the whip and the skull key and says, "These seem useful as well. Who would like to use these? I can, certainly, but I'm happy to offer it to others. Same with the skull key, which we should keep until we can find its purpose. Now..." She reaches down and places both of her hands in the pool of blood draining from the acolyte who cut his own throat. She walks out and places her bloody palms on both skulls outside. She shrugs and says, "Just in case."

"These cultists know no limits," I say, looking upon the fallen red robe that took his own life instead of face us.

I grimace, as I was about to offer capture to the cultist instead of death. I ponder the skull key, wondering which lock is its home and what it opens; and what importance it holds. Either way, it looked menacing for a key, consistent with their motif.

Given the blood curses around the area, I followed suit with Lillit, using the cultist's blood on the skulls to stave away any danger. It was distasteful even with the cultist's blood. As I placed my hand on the skull, I did wonder how these cultists and how each and every one got mixed up in the cult. Some, I figured we're drawn obviously to it, but others...it didn't seem like they belonged to such a cult.

Orm's first aid proves effective, and Father Marcus begins to awaken.

He groans and then sits up. He blinks several times and listens to Orm and Hobb. "Yes, thank you for coming. Especially you, old Hobb Puddlefoot. Always good in a scrap."

Father Marcus takes a more thorough scan of the room. He sees the dead cultists and the mistress of pain, and then his eyes stop on the green form of Nikkghak. He coughs. "Nikkghak, my boy, you're here." He tries to push himself up further, but his strength fails him and he slides back down to a prone position. "Come closer, my friend. How did you come to be in this awful place?"
OOC:

I counted the XP, and you were at 8 after you released the three villagers and Kara in the previous room. I assume that you will help Father Marcus out of the cave once he feels ready to go, which will give you an additional 2 XP. Y'all could elect to try to rest in this room, and then I would let you level up, but this complex isn't exactly the safest place to rest. We could also wait until we are more sure of a safe location.

Lillit is right, the whip is a pretty cool weapon if someone wants to use it. I totally understand that it might not be your aesthetic, though. Once the two venom charges are used up, then it will just be a normal whip.

We'll wait to give Nikkghak a chance to post.

Vote on where y'all would like to go next...

Where to next? Public

The locked door with ritual chanting.

As the paralyzing toxins fade, Nikk scrambles up into a sitting position. Shame over his own inadequacy battles with the elation of having finally found Father Marcus alive.

Elation wins out though.

"Thank you." The words come out hoarse and strained, but he nods in appreciation as Orm hands him the bottle. He takes a sip, then quickly gives it back, not wanting to waste another moment before Marcus gets the same. Fortunately, the dwarf wizard seems to be of the same mind.

Still woozy and weak, but feeling some strength returning, he crawls his way over and collapses side-to-side with the priest. "Hello Father", he mumbles out, eyes closed, just taking a moment to catch his breath. Gesturing vaguely in the direction of the others, he continues, "These fine men and women lent our town their aid. Without them me and Hobb would not have made it past the front gate."

With that, he lies back on the cold stone floor, offering a quiet prayer of thanks to St. Terragnis, and listens as his companions discuss their next move.

OK cool. Let's say we check it on the way out, just in case. I don't wanna leave some poor villager chained up in a closet off to the side to die, just because we weren't thorough! For now, it looks like on to the chanting door! Gotta interrupt their little party.

At Ivar's question, Father Marcus points to the cage and shakes his head. "I do know that they took a total of fifteen from our village, including myself. I assumed that they were slowly, one by one, sacrificing us to their evil blood god. Thank you for rescuing me and for helping me to regain my strength. Nikkghak, if you don't mind, I would speak with you privately." Marcus and Nikkghak retire to the corner. Father Marcus places a tender hand on his shoulder. "I am most proud of you, my boy. When you arrived on our doorstep, I never imagined what you would grow into. I would pray with you before I depart." Both Marcus and Nikkghak kneel and bow their heads. Father Marcus offers a whispered prayer to St. Terragnis. The other Hillshire Wayfinders watch silently.
OOC:
Nikkghak gains a luck token.
Father Marcus stands and says goodbye to the group. He shakes hands, pats backs, and offers simple words of thanks and encouragement. He hefts his mace and strides out of the caverns.

The sounds of chanting grow louder, and as you slide the skull key into the door, a loud booming voice echoes from within. "Yes! As we sacrifice these, our power grows, as does our connection to our lord, Ramlaat!"

Several voices then chant in unison: "Ramlaat. Ramlaat. Ramlaat"

The Hillshire Wayfinders open the door to the ritual chamber and are faced with the horrific nightmare before them. A large, muscular black-robed figure stands behind a pulpit, arms outstretched, a wicked-looking longsword belted to his side. Four red-robed cultists chant and sway in pews. Four villagers stand bound to wood stakes. Around the room, a five-foot deep river of foul-smelling, bubbling blood flows.

Moloch pounds the pulpit. "I told you all that I was not to be disturbed!" But then the robe tilts to the side as if listening to an unseen voice. "Yes, lord." He points. "My followers, it seems that our ranks have been infiltrated with unbelievers. Ramlaat has spoken! Kill them!"

Moloch thrusts a chainmailed hand at Tyrus and speaks a magical word under his breath. Tyrus strains against his bindings, his eyes rolling back into his skull. He struggles for a moment and then relaxes. Tyrus bows his head and speaks in a low guttural growl: "Yes, Lord Moloch." Moloch steps forward, pulls a dagger from his robe, and cuts the ropes holding Tyrus to the stake.

His resolve strengthened, his eyes perhaps a bit misty, Nikk says his goodbyes to the priest who took him in all those years ago, then steels himself for what they will find beyond the door. He keeps his spear ready as the door slides open and the mad chanting washes over them.

"May the Saint preserve us..." Nikk breathes, his chest tight in shock at the demonic scene playing out before him.

Hobb had a dreadful feeling that he wasn’t going to make it out of this room! This was bad business; the kind that halflings sought to avoid.

Still, he had put down the elfling back there, and he still drew breath.

He hefts his mace and joins Llewellyn in the assault. Splitting their attention, he races for (Red 2) on the other side of the room and swings his mace.

"Don’t just stand about! Get on them!" he shouts to the others, as he joins the scrum!

Llewellyn slices deep into the cultist's belly, spilling his innards on the floor. He seizes and then falls to the ground dead, a rotten grin on his rictus face.

Hobb swings his mace and connects with the red-robe. A sickening crunch, and the cultist cries out in pain, but he remains upright.

Tyrus turns and focuses on Llewellyn and charges. He wraps his arms around Llewellyn from behind, underneath his armpits, and begins to wrestle Llewellyn towards the river of blood.

Lillit senses the magical tug from Moloch and feels her feet sliding toward the awful bubbling blood. She reaches back and grabs the doorframe behind her and holds on for dear life. Long before all this--before her family died, before she was inducted into the coven--she worked on family's farm and had become a strong young farm girl. That strength serves her now to keep her from falling in.

Once the pull subsided, she turns and points a finger at Moloch. Her familiar reveals itself now, slithering out of her robe and down her arm, standing up and hissing at Moloch. In her other hand, she holds the snake whip. She looks at Moloch and says, "You are weak. You do not serve the serpent. You do not know the serpent. Not as I. So you? You will die."

@Drgwen I agree. That was an awesome post! I agree, it deserves a luck token. I flip a luck token through the air to Drgwen.
Llewellyn bounds across the ritual chamber and slams into Red 3. He plunges his sword into the cultist's gut, and it exits through his back. He slumps to the ground before he is able to kill the villager. Villager 1, an older gentleman with a graying pate looks to Llewellyn with wide eyes. He releases his held breath. "Thank you!"

Hobb and Nikkghak pincher attack Red 4, and as his body is falling to the ground, a bolt of magical energy hits his body as well.

Lillit and Ivar both send able attacks at the master of the Red Hand. He absorbs the damage and keeps going.

He stabs Villager 3 through her heart, the blade peeking out of the front of her jerkin. He shudders and laughs with glee as the villager dies before him. He rips his blade from the villager, blood drips to the ground, and coalesces before him. "Ramlaat! Another sacrifice for you, my lord!" He looks towards the heavens and raises his sword above his head. "Bless me, lord of darkness and chaos, with thy power. DARKNESS FALLS!" And as Moloch screams, the ritual chamber shakes, and a foul wind bursts through the door behind the pulpit and rushes about the chamber and extinguishes Orm's lantern.

We NEED light. Does anyone have the Light spell? If not, get to lighting a torch or lantern, yeah? We have Disadvantage to re-light a torch or lantern, yes? And it is a DC 12 DEX check to light something by feel, I believe. But THIEVES don't have disadvantage, yes? I'm gonna try an alternative that will depend on GM ruling.
Lillit feels in her bag for one of the three flasks of oil and her tinderbox. She steps one stride forward, knowing there be stone in front of her. She then dumps the oil on the stone on the square now in front of her, and throws her tinderbox sparks at the ground, hoping to ignite the spilled oil.
OOC:
OK, so here's my thinking. A pool of oil should be SUPER easy to light in the dark as long as I know where it is. And yes, Lillit will make sure she pours in on the ground IN FRONT OF her. Not IN her square or on herself! So hopefully I have a much lower DC to light the oil this way! There will be a bit of an environmental obstacle in that square but so be it. Also, it won't burn for more than a few turns, I imagine, since it isn't in a lantern, but this will give us all light!

I grunt, hoping for now a short distance between myself and the leader will be a gulf, as the darkness is a crisis among my companions, the Wayfinders. I snatch a torch off of my backpack and attempt to expediently light it, so we'll all have at least some point of light, that hopefully the cult leader can't extinguish so immediately.

I consider it wiser to attack the cult leader now, but reconsider, since the darkness puts me at such a disadvantage, but also the delay does, too.

Gede, preserve me as I bring light back from the Darkness. If you are receiving this prayer, please preserve me from this Ramlaat villain that these evil ones sacrifice to! I uttered a silent prayer as I snapped light onto the torch as best as I could, putting my shield away so I could hold the torch, and still hold my sword.

My next move would be to slash my sword at the churlsome cult leader who so wantonly killed a villager as he did. It would be time for his due to come, if I had my way.

Nikk barely has time to catch his breath as the foul villain hits the floor, when suddenly the world around him goes dark. Swirling around, hearing the confusion breaking out all around, he hears the sound of fighting where they came from.

Following close behind Puddlefoot, he makes a violent stab towards where the new reinforcements have come, hoping quietly he didn't just stab the dwarf wizard to death.

Sorry about not posting yesterday. Things got busy. Here we go...
The room is plunged into darkness, and the sounds of shuffling, rummaging, and whispered prayer fill the space that the light used to occupy.

But then, light gutters from near the captured villagers. Llewellyn raises his torch high. It takes a moment as our heroes' eyes adjust to the illumination and can take stock of their new situation.
[ +- ] Updated Map
Both of the cult acolytes find themselves surrounded by the Hillshire Wayfinders and are confused by the change in light sources. They swing, Red 5 attempting to stab Nikkghak, and Red 6 swiping at Hobb, but both miss.
OOC:
Round 10
Moloch moves around the stakes and rushes towards Llewellyn to keep him from releasing Ramlaat's prizes. He growls; it is unearthly and demonic. He swings his twisted black blade in a wide arc. The blade connects with Llewellyn's shoulder, and Moloch pulls it back quickly. It slices along the surface, and blood quickly begins to bead along the line left by the extremely sharp blade.
OOC:
@PlebeianG Llewllyn takes 2 points of damage. Also, you will have to decide what you want to do with your weapon since you are also holding the torch. You can use your bastard sword with one hand, but then you roll 1d8 for damage rather than the 1d10 for two hands. Or you could drop the torch. If you do drop the torch, roll a d6, and on a ,1 the light will go ou,t and we will figure out what happened to the torch when you dropped it. Anything else and you will drop it in a way where the fire won't go out.

The shaking of the ground rises in intensity, and the Hillshire Wayfinders hear rocks collapsing behind them to the West. The floor buckles beneath Llewellyn, and the warrior loses his footing and falls into the pool of caustic blood. The acidic liquid eats away at his exposed skin. Fortunately, the torch falls upon solid ground when Llewellyn loses his footing rather than sliding into the pool.
OOC:
Sorry, Llewellyn. 4 Damage. I don't know how many HP you have left. If you are still up, then it takes a DC 9 Strength check to get out of the blood pool. If you are down, then one person can lift you out for a DC 12 Strength check. If multiple people work together, add a +2 to the strength check. This is just to simulate trying to get you out while the room is still shaking.
Hobb shouts, "Now...what do you suppose is causing that?" and as if in answer, the door to the East flaps shut and then opens again. Dust falls from the ceiling in the next room over a blood-drenched Titan's skull. This doesn't look the same as the stone skulls that the group has seen previously. This is an actual skull, covered in dried blood. He also sees the glitter of gold from a chest in the next room.

Nikkghak slips and falls upon the floor, but grabs a pew and holds tight to keep himself from sliding.

The earthquake subsides, and the room has been changed drastically. Great slabs of stone have pitched up and down, creating very rough terrain. The Hillshire Wayfinders can hear liquid running through a crack and notice that the blood around the room is slowly draining. The air is dusty and still tinged with the iron scent of blood.

Behind you to the West, the door is still passagable, but it looks like the passage to the South (where the other locked door was) is blocked by rubble. The doorway to the East still lies open, although the door has been thrown off its hinges and the frame is a bit askew. The giant bloody skull now seems to have a large crack running along the top of it. The torchlight shimmers off gold coins in the next room. There are still two villagers who can be released and saved. Llewellyn has been pulled out of the blood, but isn't breathing.

The group weaves their way through the rubble, dust, and crushed stone and slowly, one by one, enter the next room. A massive bloodied skull with a large crack across the top dominates this room. This is a titan's skull. On the large pedestal beneath the skull, the following inscription:

The strong take what they wish, but those who honor Him with the blood of the worthy slain, shall truly know His favor.

A large mural depicting a scene of epic battle is painted on the North wall. The battle is so bloody that it drowns the world. Robed figures with demonic wings fly safely above the sanguine flood.

By the time the quaking stops and Nikk finds his footing, the battle is already over.

Following Lillit's example, he too daubs a bloody handprint upon the cracked skull, trying not to think too hard on what that creature must have looked like in life.

The wafting of fresh surface air is enticing, and more than anything he wishes to head up those stairs and depart from this hellish place of madness. But if there's even a chance that one of his kinsmen is still down here...?

"Yes, we might have missed somebody."

I take another quaff of the potion, draining the last of it with a pensive expression. Hopefully, the threat of more danger has been extinguished with the slaying of the cult leader, but, then again, I wasn't sure we were completely thorough in our exploration of their hideout.

Looking upon the spoils, I was happy to see the windfall come into our hands rather than be in the cult's possession. Perhaps we could put it to good use rather than the evil the cult was doing.

Lillit searches Moloch's bloody robes with a tentative hand. She finds a pouch of blood and a skull key, identical to the one the group found with the Mistress of Pain. Next to his body lies his twisted longsword.

Lillit's hand comes away from the skull with a sticky rip. Because of her proficiency with the magic arts, she can tell that this skull was being used as a magical conduit, but now that it has been cleaved, the magic has left it.

Orm studies the mural and concludes that it may be a depiction of a prophecy or sacred text. Blood and demons seem to be related to Ramlaat, which would make sense. He turns to the pile of treasure and picks up the pearl. It is smooth, roughly the size of an apple, and fits perfectly in his hand. Orm can sense that the pearl has a magical purpose.

Nikkghak places his hand next to Lillit's handprint and pulls it away again.

"Do we want to take that?" Hobb asks, pointing a hairy finger at the twisted sword on the ground. He worried that such a dark artifact might whisper and tempt the villagers, but he couldn’t say for sure!

He climbs towards the fresh air then, heaving great gulps of it. He’d pulled through, mace and shield in hand. He’d slain and been struck by blows that ought to have killed him. Gede had seen him through, and now it was time for Old Hobb to rest!

With a hesitant look back towards the collapsing lair, Nikkghak moves to Tyrus' body, intent on dragging him out. It was the least he could do for Kara. But the others were right, it was a fool's errand to hunt through the ruins for more survivors. He only hoped they had found everyone.

"That blade reeks of evil. Perhaps it could be purified at the chapel, or at least locked away where it would not tempt anyone?" He bows his head in deference to the witch and wizard of the group. "But if one of you wish to claim it for your own research, I only ask that you treat it with care."

With that, he begins dragging Tyrus towards the open air. Home would not be the same, not after what had transpired these past few days, but it was still home. By sheer luck and the bravery of his companions had he pulled through, and now he wished for nothing more than to be back in the chapel, listening to the soothing sermons from his little corner behind the pews.

I look upon Tyrus' still body with a forlorn expression.

"It's a pity he was lost this way; damn this craven maniac for poisoning his mind. Hillshire must know about these cultists abd what they've done so they don't fall prey again. How this could happen, it must not happen again. I wonder where it started, these cruel worshippers. I may rest now, but again I will rise until the source is snuffed out and there is no haunting of chaos from these people."

The Hillshire Wayfinders exit the cave through the back passage and then find their way back to the main entrance and the road home. Several members of the party build a litter and place Tyrus' body in it. They pass spider corpses and reflect on everything that has transpired. They laugh as they travel, the cool wind carrying them back to the village.

The village welcomes the heroes home. Sister Inna, Father Marcus, even Cuthbert the blacksmith smiles and waves. Joy, deference, and pride. Kara cries over her betrothed. The Wayfinders all attend the funeral. But life then moves on.

One more post? What does your character do next? Move on to the next town? Settle down for a while? Stay in Hillshire?

Everyone levels up too.
When Orm finds a quiet moment to study he pulls the pearl out from its hiding place. He inspects the orb and then focuses his magical energy. He searches and probes and discovers the use of the magical item.

Lillit took up the "evil" sword of the fallen Moloch, since no one else seemed interested, and returns to town, snake whip and all. She celebrates with the others and happily accepts the thanks of the villagers.

After things die down, she finds a cottage outside of town and begins to develop her arts of witchcraft, herbalism, and potion crafting, hoping one day to be able to provide healing and soothing salves and tonics for the townsfolk.

lol what a great HP roll!

Back from his first brush with adventuring, and having found himself sorely unsuited for it, Nikkghak returns to his peaceful life in the chapel. He spends his days helping out where he can, his evenings in quiet prayer and contemplation.

Some nights he still startles awake, images of monstrous spiders and winged demons lingering in the recesses of his mind. But for the most part his life continues on, and perhaps he has even grown a little braver from the ordeal. Now he ventures into town more often, even begins to hold the odd sermon himself.

He knows that one day danger may come to Hillshire again, and he might be forced to pick up his spear again. But for now he is content to stay here, in this small corner of the world where he belongs.

Hillshire is home. I return to my cabin in the outskirts of the village, but keep a close watch; closer than I used to, on my fellow villagers. The whole experience has left me with closer ties to the village than I used to have, and I especially watched over those who were captured by the cult, vowing to see them safe for the rest of their days. If anything, I never wanted to see Hillshire suffer another depredation like this ever again.

I was ready and willing to be a resident-protector of Hillshire for all of my days, and after my foray against the cult, I felt that much more hale and bolder from my experienced; meeting my fellow Wayfinders was a blessing, and as we parted, I proposed that we meet, as we could to stay in touch, because our experience was invaluable to preventing another dark incursion, and quite simply I felt the bonds forged of veterancy together that I could not simply abandon after our shared expedition together.

For now I saved my share of the gains, biding my time carefully considering what I might purchase; perhaps a nicer suit of armour, so that I might stand up to future threats and avoid some of the pitfalls that I fell to during the adventure in the cultist redoubt.

The Puddlefoot name meant something around Hillshire. Hobb, for his part in the quest, had only secured that reputation for another generation. Time would come when his own children would venture off, taking the old Halfling’s arms and armor with them, and secure the reputation once more.

But for Hobb, his bloodlust had risen and fallen throughout the course of their mission, and he would simply slip back into the quiet life in Hillshire… when he wasn’t butting heads with that damned blacksmith!

I wasn't keeping track. There were piddly 3 or 4 gold here or there and then 200 gold at the end. Sorry, I should have been tallying it.

Orm spent several days consulting with Father Marcus and Sister Inna over how to, short of dying, see the Gods in the flesh. They thought it odd, but after valiantly helping save the villagers, who were they to deny Orm an odd request.

Eventually, burning the midnight oil in a temple library, Orm finds a passage in a non descript journal tucked away in the back corner, and his eyes widen. His mother's dying words, seared into his mind, spring forth "Go find him. Go find Ord. Go find your father ... and destroy him. Take your rightful place as his successor."

He closes the journal and is gone from Hillshire before the morning sun breaks. A note lays on his pillow, "Take care Wayfinders. I hope to see you again some day, but for now I have an important family matter that needs attending."
