Bear unsheathes the machete hanging from his belt. If not for the gun he might have tried non-lethal means here, but these priests seemed to be out to kill them. He couldn't blame them after the gunfire they likely heard minutes ago.

He gets up close and personal with one the mace wielding men and tries to cut into him with a strong swing. At the same time, he attempts to position himself in a way that the villager would have a hard time aiming at him.
OOC:
is that a raise on these guys? If so I need to add another d6 dmg, right?
I'll spend a benny to reroll dmg

I think Bear should also roll some damage for the machine gun as an improvised weapon, maybe 1d4. I’ll assume a couple more points of damage that make up a raise.

I’ll puppet Ek.
Makes a fighting roll versus her priest. Misses, I’ll give the priest one last chance at an attack.

Ek tries unsuccessfully to pistol whip the priest. The priest swings his club clumsily and also fails to do harm.

Taylor knees the fellow and he goes down sprawling. The mace rolls on the temple’s stone floor.

The large double doors to the altar room swing open. The temple’s final guardian appears. An immense creature slides sinuously into view. Scaled and poised like an immense cobra, as tall as the room. A wave of supernatural terror spreads from the creature.

The huge snake, dreadful and beautiful, has a serene human face! Vikram knows that the being is a naga, a guardian spirit set to protect a temple…
OOC:

This is essentially the final encounter of the adventure. It requires a huge TN8 SPI roll.

If you somehow make the roll, the naga will regard your character with enormous respect and speak briefly with them, explaining recent events. Otherwise they will vanish.

More likely, your character will fail (I’ll have Taylor fail automatically for story purposes). In which case they will need to roll on the Terror table. Which we’ll deal with in the next post.

Rolls

attack - (1d4;1d6, RA)

(1) + (4) = 5

priest attack - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Both frightened and fascinated by the legendary figure in front of him, Vikram takes pause, his brain trying to calculate whether to flee, fight, or formulate.
OOC:
spending Benny, 3/4
OOC:
I'll spend one more, 2/4
OOC:
yowza, could I use those extra raises to give my companions a +1/+2 on their Spirit rolls? Perhaps gesture with my hand for the others to stop and let them know, "She means us no harm."
OOC:
though the Terror table does sound fun lol

1d6 : (3) = 3

Yes, why not. Let’s make it a +2 to others’ rolls.

Im not sure what you mean by this. Bear used his machete. Or do you mean damage against bear?
Maybe it already doesn't matter anymore 😁
Bear was about to wind up for another swing, but is distracted when the double doors swing open. Before them a mighty snake rears it's head. He tries to keep his focus.
OOC:
Thnx for the bonus, ctme! Even though I'm still way off 😂
Oh I think also get a +2 from my edge. Still not enough ...
I'll roll for the terror table.

I think the fear roll indicates being Vulnerable or something less serious. Anyway, only Vikram 'earns' communion with the naga.

I'm not sure if raccoon is still away, so I'll continue to move things on.

Bear cannot help but gasp in awe and terror at the naga. In his sight, the creature seems to fade, if not completely vanish, and the room is filled with a strange hiss like the static of an untuned radio.

Vikram's experience is different. For him the naga remains fully visible. Impossible , but fully real. She fixes him with her serene, serpent-like gaze. Her eyes are multi-hued jewels, brimming with divine wisdom.

She is unable to communicate with Vikram in words. Her langauge is the ancient Hindi that was spoken when scribes first set down Sanskrit. Instead, she conjures images. The twelve pictures in the wall frieze vanish. In their place, new images appear. Each is intensely detailed , blazing with colour. Whereas the original pictures in the frieze described events from ancient mythology, the new images explain the events concerning the temple that took place during and after the war, including the present expedition...

Picture 1. A patrol of US soldiers searches the jungle for a crashed aircraft and discovers the temple.
2. Temple priests rebuff them and order them to leave --the soldiers obey
3. the tiger devil (hidden within? under? 'beyond'? the temple--his location is not clear) senses the soldiers' intrusion and creates an illusion to encourage their return --treasures of gold, jade and jewels.
4. The astonished officer departs but writes a report, describing the marvelous treasures, which is sent to HQ in Bombay.
5. In Bombay, an Indian clerk intercepts the report and secretly communicates its contents via spies to the Indian Japanese Army, the anti-British allies of the Japanese.
6. The Japanese master spy, Suzuki Keiji, reads the report, delighted to have discovered the legendary Tiger General's prison.
7. He leads a mission to the temple where they fight 'guardians', ogre-like monsters. Many solders are killed.
8. Suzuki forces his way to the altar and comes into the presence of the tiger devil. The general (blesses? possesses?)him and Suzuki departs.
9. The few surviving priests are furious at the breach and activate the temple's few remaining guardians.
10. Later, a party of adventurers--Taylor, Bear, Ekaterina and Vikram-- depart on the mission to the temple in their two jeeps.

Further, shadowy images depict the party's arrival at the temple, the current encounter with the naga (!) and some vague projections of a future journey to Japan to confront Suzuki.

The new images fade, the old pictures return to Vikram's view. The naga now vanishes, even from Vikram's view....
OOC:

There is not much left to explore--this scene was the adventure climax :).

When searched, the crates contain not only the heavier supplies, but also a payment of $40,000 dollars in new banknotes. Enough to easily cover the costs of the mission and increase each character's wealth to the next die type!

Is there anything else you want to look at/ check before you depart?

Katya gets up from the ground where she had been thrown for a loop by the last priest, missing the naga encounter, and says Vell that vas interesting

Taking a moment to consider what just happened, Vikram takes out his formulae notebook and jots down summaries of the visions in its back pages, explaining to the others what he saw as he does so.

The final note he keeps to himself ... Is Lai Teck working with Suzuki Keiji?
OOC:
if there's nothing else of note in the temple or surrounding area, let's grab what we can and slowly make our way back.

You have only seen the areas of the temple mentioned above.

But let’s leave it there, I guess.

Bear blinks. Did he really just see that? There is no sign of the snake now. Had it been some kind of trick of the light?
"Did any of you lot see that, or was it just us?" He asks the others, still a bit baffled. "Let's take inventory and leave before more of them show up."

He shakes his head as if to remove a veil that was placed upon it. His thoughts breaking through, back to normal.

"Looks like you did a dead good job selecting your crew, Taylor." He says with a smile on his way back to the crates and slaps him on the shoulder. With the newly found money he'll be able to pay for his return journey back to England. He couldn't wait to see his friends and family again. Though that will have to wait until after he treated everyone to a round of drinks back where this all started.

Taylor rises from the floor. He rises sheepishly, having swooned away during Vikram’s communion with the guardian deity.

"So you are going home, Bear? Back to rainy old Newcastle? You won’t stick there long. I’ll give you my contact details. We’ll go out on adventure again some day."

He looks at Vikram, sensing somehow that he has been enlightened as to the nature of the temple and its history.

"I don’t know what happened, but it looks like Mr Singh here has sussed out what’s going on. I admit that I knew more than I was letting on. It was just that…I didn’t think you’d believe me…"

After Vikram has filled in the party about the naga’s revelations , Taylor nods.

"Sounds like this devil has fastened onto Suzuki somehow and escaped the moon prison."

The two priests are also recovering from their recent knock out blows. Raising themselves to their knees , they show no further hostility to the adventurers.

"The Guardian has spared you," one says approvingly in Burmese.

Minutes later the two soldiers return. They turn out to be Japanese. They have removed the IJA tags from their ragged uniforms to show they are no longer combatants.

"When the war was over, after Japan’s surrender, we decided to remain here and defend the temple," one explains, in halting English.

Survivors of Suzuki’s ill-fated patrol, they wished to undo the harm they caused to the local people.

When the ex-soldiers learn that the Tiger Devil has escaped, occupying Suzuki, they hang their heads in disappointment.

"So the devil is not here. The Tiger is in Japan*, " the English-speaking soldier says….
