Bear can't help but laugh at the thugs. "Is that all you got, weaklings?" He says, probably wrongly, in the few Burmese words he knows. The insult at the end is the only word he's sure about that it's correct. He's ready to punch any of them who turn back right in the gut.

Anger flickers in the face of the man targeted by Bear’s taunt. But he is pulled away by the other robbers. Vikram notices that the ring-leader glances briefly across the bar at Taylor. Specifically, just for a moment, at the pocket where Taylor has stowed the folded map. Clearly the gang’s real target.

The four thugs withdraw, dragging the unconscious fighter aboard a rickshaw. They disappear into the street bustle.

Mynt looks approvingly at the untouched wad of cash in his hands. A small fortune. When Eketerina calls for sake, he takes the bar’s last bottle, left by a Japanese high-ranking officer. The Jap Major’s signature, ‘Sato’, is still scribbled proprietarily on the label. Mynt frowns for a moment —it is not proper to give his bottle to another customer. But Sato will never come back.

"On the house, " he declares.

Taylor nods at the crew of four.

"Good. We don’t have the authority here to put the squeeze on prisoners. And we don’t want the cops poking their nose into this business."

He looks disapprovingly at the approaching bottle of rice wine. Then places a card on the table.

"Stay together. Come to this address at 1900 hours. We are going to meet our fixer to pick up our transport. This guy’s got everything. US jeeps. British trucks. Even a Universal Carrier, if Miss Volkova here knows how to drive a tracked vehicle."

"Dress nicely, please, if that’s possible. This guy likes to do business in style."
OOC:

Unless you have anything else to do here, we’ll move to the next scene.

You will go to the mansion of U Gem (known as ‘The Gem’ in the underworld), in the outskirts of the city. The Gem is your shady fixer. A smuggler who has earned semi-immunity by helping the Allies during the war.

The Gem is quite well known. If your character has worked in Burma before, make a normal Common Knowledge roll to dredge up any gossip/ intel about him.

Please describe your thoughts before the meeting, in the bar , your hotel, or the taxi going to Gem’s place. Does your character have a set of ‘nice’ clothes? You don’t need to have recorded such on your sheet, just consider the likelihood given your character.

You may also wish to consider the transport options Gem will offer:
— A jeep is fast and hardy.
— A truck can carry plenty of stuff but requires a decent road
—The Brits have left behind plenty of Universal Carriers, small, light personnel carriers which are fast/ all terrain but have v little capacity for gear. Although they look sturdy, they have no real armour and no weapons.
—Any combination of the above (even one of each) will be possible

Vikram thought there was something suspicious about this gang randomly showing up at this bar, and it was proven when he saw their leader boring a hole at the map in Taylor's pocket. In hindsight he should've stopped the man to question him, but a) the American was correct about not wanting the police to show up, and b) he doubted the leader would've known anything of value.

Could it be Lai Teck, looking to acquire funds? He pushed the thought aside, something to chew on later. For now, he needed to focus on the task at hand.

Sidling up next to Taylor, in a low voice, "They were here for the map. Guard it carefully."

Holding to his promise, Vikram buys Bear another gin, "Apologies, my friend. Good to see time has not dulled your fists.". Waving goodbye to the rest, he finishes his sake and heads out.

He didn't imagine a romp in the jungle would require a suit, so didn't pack one. Stopping at a local clothier, he finds something suitable (so to speak) that doesn't break the bank.

Later that evening, on the taxi ride to the mansion, Vikram ponders over The Gem and what kinds of items they may need for this mission. Jeeps seemed the best option, with the UC acting as a portable hold for their treasure. Tough to say if a truck was needed without knowing how much treasure there may be and the exact terrain. And if there was a competing team, speed and durability were important.

Yay! Time to use the wealth dice. @ctme2000 , a good suit in 1946 is a substantial purchase, but you’d get a good price from a tailor in Rangoon. Please make an easier (TN3) wealth roll. If you succeed, drop your die to d4 until you get a payout to restore your usual wealth level. If you succeed with a raise, stick with your current d6.

Taylor will bail you out if your Wealth goes below d4…

"You pissed us off more with missin' that throw than us missin' the drink!" Bear tells Vikram with a serious face. Then, unable to hold it, he bellows a laugh and slaps the man's back. "Gave us the opening to slam the geezer down, though."

Looks like they had a capable team. He concluded.

In 3 large gulps he downs the drink and heads out of the bar to prepare.
OOC:
ran out of time. Will post about the prepping later
I don't think Bear would know about the Gem.

Returning to her room after finishing up the bottle with Josey, Katya digs through, her backpack to find a dress uniform in the bottom. Didn't think I'd be wearing this again, especially in the middle of a jungle she turns and looks at the dwindling pile of cash that she had pulled out of the bag But I'd rather wear this then have to buy a formal dress on such short notice; the seamstress would undoubtedly charge me an arm and a leg

She puts on her dress uniform, which is a khaki uniform with khaki pants, light blue pipping, and light blue collar tabs. The tabs had a single black bar on them and a pin of a plane's propeller on it with a set of wings behind them. She picked up her hat, which had, a light blue hatband around it and put it under her arm. She looked into the mirror with a forlorn look in her gaze. That's a sight for sore eyes...I wonder how all my girls are doing. And should I?... Her eyes glanced over to a locked metal box No, I'd just have to take them all off at the end of the evening anyways.

She put on a cheap trenchcoat she had bought No need to let anyone else see this uniform; could cause a panic. No need for news of a Soviet officer to become gossip here. Wish I could wear my shinel instead of this itchy fabric...but that would probably give me away as much as my uniform. Oh well its only for tonight And she flagged down a taxi, joining any of the crew who decided to drive with her.

I wonder how good of condition the vehicles are in, I'd personally like something light and fast, never had much need for weapons anyways.... though the issue is the amount of cargo space we will need is unknown. It's also been a while since I've driven something for cargo transport, but I should be able to pick it up again quickly. Speaking of cargo, we might need...a rather massive vehicle...hmmm...decisions. And before she knew it she had arrived at the destination

It usually means you can’t afford it ( maybe tailoring here isn’t as cheap as people say, or you spent more recently than you realised). Or, you can ‘go broke’, spending everything you have and dropping your wealth die to the unskilled (1d4-2) level.

It will restore gradually if you go for the latter.

The prices were more exorbitant than expected. Still, if this was as important as Taylor made it seem, might as well play along. Even if the treasure didn't recuperate his loss, it seemed like the American was good enough to pay up.

Bear had brought a nice looking uniform from home when he came here. It was part of the get rich quick scheme playbook. He was meant to be a high ranking British officer. Higher than his true rank. That was all he had to do, really. He never got the chance to use it, though. Many times he had thought of selling it, but it had some sentimental value and kept him from making the same mistake again.

It still fit nicely, he noticed when putting it on. On his way to U Gem he ponders about the transport. A good jeep would be nice. One with soft suspension that can handle a fast drive through rough terrain. But he knew that wasn't his specialty. As long at the transport could keep steady long enough for him to fire a couple rounds, it would be just fine for him. Cargo space did seem an important factor. "Hey, slow down! I need to look spotless tonight." He shouted angrily at the rickshaw driver.

The adventurers arrive at a remote suburb of Rangoon, where mansions and smart villas perch on a verdant hillside. They are conducted into a large dining room, panelled with gleaming, polished teak.

U Gem is a handsome, middle-aged Burmese dressed in a collarless, silk shirt. He welcomes the guests and settles them to a banquet. Many of the dishes are Burmese —coconut curries, tea-leaf salads and toasted fish. But there is Anglo influence in some of the courses. A steak and kidney pie is set out alongside trays of pork and fish. Scottish shortbread is served next to native tapioca jelly.

U Gem is troubled by Vikram’s battered face, which he considers inauspicious. But he is reassured somewhat by the smartness of his dress. He compliments Vikram and Taylor on their civilian suits. But U Gem seems less pleased by the presentation of some other guests.

"The war is over," he says, making light of things. "Try to blend in. We are all civilians now. I will make sure that you all have proper clothes when you leave here."

"I am a businessman, operating within a liberal interpretation of customs laws. This was useful to the Allies, when we were under Japanese occupation. I enjoy a small measure of immunity in return for my help in those times. Mr Taylor here was my contact, so I am pleased to help him, as friend, even in this time of peace. And I will back this mission, as far as I can."

After the dinner, U Gem shows the visitors to a platform that overlooks the large grounds of his compound. He points out warehouses, garages and numerous parked vehicles. The apparatus of a diverse smuggling operation.

" I will offer a couple of my jeeps. It will be a tight fit with your gear, but there will be enough space if you ditch unnecessary items. The jeeps have been properly registered as civilian vehicles . I’ve painted out military insignia and made them a nice civilian grey. My mechanic will throw on a decent set of spare parts."

"It will take three to four days to reach Mandalay in the north. You can stay at hotels overnight. I’ll make sure you have tea, coffee, biscuits and so on in case you get hungry during the day. You’ll need two drivers, obviously."
OOC:

—I’ll ‘background’ Josey in the scene—either he’s dropped out or keeps a low profile in events.

—Since Vikram is wearing a decent suit, I’ll give him a +1 on persuasion rolls for the next few days, while his suit stays fresh, partially cancelling out his Ugly hindrance.

Please all:

1. Make a persuasion roll to impress U Gem with your professionalism during the dinner and conversation. If he likes the party overall, he’s likely to back it further with some extra freebies.

2. U Gem suggests adopting a non-military cover for the mission. In the Uk (and in this situation), wearing uniforms when not on service is asking for trouble . Time to invent some cover for your party— as prospectors, tea buyers, surveyors, tourists, ornithologists, archaeologists, whatever. U Gem will find clothes (and even papers) overnight that support your identity.

Bear is lucky that he comes from a good family. Though he may not always act like it. Within seconds of meetings U Gem he completely ditches his Geordie accent and puts on a propper posh style of speech that none of the others have ever heard him do before.

"Yes, splendid. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir. I do agree the war should not be dragged on any longer, however this has some ... Sentimental value to me. Hence my wearing it tonight."

During dinner he tries to strike up a conversation with the host about blending in. "Perhaps a disguise is indeed preferable. My father used to import teas from all over. I have some knowledge on that front. It could be a good alias for me."

"A good choice," says U Gem. " The tea trade is reviving. And buyers now use jeeps for cross country travel. I will arrange for some suitable clothes. I will request your measurements and in the morning, everything will be ready."
OOC:

Thanks for the clear choice, have a Benny.

Bear can use his Common Knowledge to represent his tea expertise. Or, for a Benny (grabbing back the one awarded) we can make his claim to family expertise true…

Yes my apologies sir Gem for the outfit. I'm also not fond of vearing it in this country, which is vy I vore the trenchcoat in. Unfortunately, I do not have any other formal vear, so I must beg your pardon. Her eyes glance over to Bear. And I for one love the idea of pretending to be tea traders. Ve could say ve met during the Iran invasion, and that I used to run logistics, vich is why you hired me to run logistics for your burgeoning tea empire. It should be close enough to the truth, if anyone asks

Feeling the subtle disapproval of his appearance by U Gem doesnt bother Vikram. It's a damn shame the accident happened, but what's done is done. He's just glad to be alive and that Savita and Raj don't think any less of him. Anyone else who has a problem, well, it's on them to work it out.

He almost spits out his drink at Bear's about-face. He didn't think the man had it in him! "Other than finding it delightful to drink, I can't say I know much about the inner workings of the tea trade, but I think it's a smart plan. Boring enough to not draw attention, and offering flexibility if leeway is required."

He tips his drink in approval at Bear then looks back at their host. "I did a stint in intelligence with Force 136, and your name was in high regard there. It's a pleasure to finally meet the person, and not just hear about the myth, some would say legend. I look forward to working together." and tips his drink as well at U Gem with a smile.

Oops— sorry I forgot about the intel on U Gem.
"Thank you," replies U Gem, in response to Vikram’s compliments.

"I do not pretend to be a great patriot. But I am a person of my word. In the end, even in the underworld, honesty is usually the best policy."

Vikram recalls a rumour that U Gem was originally pro-Japanese, gaining favour by procuring luxury supplies for their officers. Like many Burmese , he switched sides during the occupation and began to help British efforts to re-conquer the territory. His days are likely numbered. When Burma achieves independence from Britain, he will be taken in by the new authorities and imprisoned or shot. No doubt he plans to flee.

Pleased by the party’s confidence, U Gem increases his support for the mission. He offers superior equipment and supplies. And a much needed boost—more plentiful money.

The next morning, the party depart in their two jeeps. Both vehicles are packed with supplies. Overnight, clothes and papers have been produced that support their identity as tea buyers. The Indian soldiers manning the city road-blocks wave them through easily. They clearly look the part.

The jeeps cruise north on the road to Mandalay.
OOC:

1. Gem’s extra support includes the following:

A- paid expenses. character’s Wealth die is temporarily increased from d6 to d8 for the mission duration (Bear’s is restored to d6)
B- superior gear- excellent maps, plentiful ammo, provisions, spare parts.

2. Let’s have some driving rolls to cover the first couple of days heading north. Make an easy TN2 driving roll. The more characters rolling, the less the strain on the drivers. The roads have been patched up but there is still sign of heavy wartime damage. Diversions, Bailey bridges and army roadblocks slow progress.

In terms of outfit/ look, this is the sort of thing I imagine Gem has arranged (a young Charles Dance —of GoT fame- in pic) :
