Chapter 4: Lyrie's Sendoff

Nov 10, 2025 9:51 pm
It takes 12 days until finally the guards from Magnimar arrives with a prison coach. In the meantime, Shalelu has left town, to once again patrol the hinterlands.

The citizen have been quite taken with you and is bothering you for the story almost every day, and none of you have been able to pay for your own drinks in the intervening time.

One man especially have taken a great interest in your tales, Cyrdak Drokkus, the producer of the local theatre. He's informed you that he has started to write a play based on your adventures called the Heroes of Sandpoint. He believes it will be his next big hit. But to make it so, he has to get all the gritty details right and so he has been filling your head with question after question.

The squad leader takes all of your statements about the grizzly events that took place. You stand by and watch four guards chain up the wizard and transport her into the coach. As they do she gives you a look full of spite. And you are sure that if she wasn't gagged to stop her from casting, she'd have a few choice words for you.

Once the coach traverses the town gates and out of views, you are left standing outside the armory that houses the town guards.

"Once again I want to thank you for your help," Sheriff Hemlock asks with a smile. "May I ask what your plans are for the immediate future?"
Nov 12, 2025 6:28 am
Khel silently watched as Lyrie was taken to Magnimar. He wanted to help a fellow scholar who was researching Thassilon or was it that he wanted to know what she found out. He was willing to help her but once it was known that she was a convict for murdering more people, nothing could be done to save her. He turned to look the Sheriff and said, "Hmm, I think we should investigate the cult Nualia joined. I have a feeling that they know more about this runic magic of Thassilon and news of Nualia's failure would surely have reached them. We still don't know what they are planning."
Nov 13, 2025 4:22 am
Chuckling at the sheriff's question, "I'm good with sticking around here and enjoying the perks of being a hero of Sandpoint."

The chuckle dies off as Grim's eyes narrow, "But if there's a further threat looking to take that away, and harm these good people, then aye, we should investigate that. Anyone know anything about this Skinsaw Cult? Doesn't ring a bell to me."

Chigaru thinks for a moment. "My plan was to leave Sandpoint and stretch my legs, see some of the world and get some hands-on experience. But I can't ignore the coincidence that the attack on Sandpoint came on the same day I was celebrating my freedom as a fully ordained monk. Maybe it is a sign from one of the gods that I am yet needed here. I may linger for a few days and see if fate has anything more in store for me. If not, I'll take that as a sign that my job here is done and I will set out on a new adventure."

"Yes, news of this cult is disturbing," the sheriff nods gravely. "Go see Ameiko before you leave, I think she had plans to give those of you leaving a farewell party. And I think Cyrdak wanted to give the first preview of his new play."
Nov 13, 2025 9:13 pm
Saldrina shrugs. "I hadn't thought that far ahead, to be honest. But I can't help but think that this isn't over. Too many loose ends."
Nov 14, 2025 6:31 pm
"I came to Sandpoint seeking adventure. If that cult has any fight in 'em, might be worth checking out. Especially if they are a threat to the town."
Nov 15, 2025 2:29 pm
The day passes, and in the evening Ameiko throws a party for the group. Cyrdak has some of the actors from the local theatre put up the first scene of his new play Heroes of Sandpoint. It is a short scene representing the attack on Sandpoint. Three dancers with oversized green helmets dance about while actors pretending to be you sing a song about how this used to be a quiet little coastal town.

It is all very strange and clearly still being worked on and not ready to be performed, but you guess Cyrdak want to show you what he has so far before you all leave town.

Cyrdak disappears in the middle of the performance and is back near the end with three bottles of Andoran Bubble Wine which he gladly shares with all of you. And Ameiko declares that the current keg will be free to all to drink and she expect it to be empty by the end of the night.
Nov 15, 2025 2:46 pm
Grim gladly takes Ameiko up on her offer, enjoying the various wines and meads. He sings and claps along to the songs, and it's the loosest anyone in Sandpoint has seen the halfing be so far.

At around midnight the sheriff shows up. He looks dour and not in a mood to party. He goes over to each of you and quietly asks if he could meet you outside.

Once you are all outside in the chill autumn air he tells you some bad news. "I'm afraid I will have to delay your departure. Seems we have a murderer in our midst."

He lets the news sink in a moment before continuing. "Some of you doubtless remember the Late Unpleasantness, how this town nearly tore itself apart in fear at the killer we called Chopper. I’m afraid we might have something similar brewing now."

"Two bodies have been found at the sawmill. And they're... they're in pretty grusome shape. The bodies were discovered by one of the mill workers, a man named Ibor Thorn, and by the time my men and I arrived on the scene, a few curious gawkers had already sprung up."

"I’ve got my guards stationed there now, keeping the mill locked down, but the thing that bothers me isn’t the fact that we have two dead bodies inside. You see, I’m afraid this particular murderer knows one of you as well."

He holds out a bloodstained scrap of folded parchement to Grimwulf. You can see his name is written in blood on outside. On the inside is a short message:

Nov 17, 2025 2:15 pm
"I guess this is the sign I was waiting for to tell me my time in Sandpoint is not yet over. You'd better take us to the scene, sheriff."
Nov 17, 2025 2:24 pm
Khel eyed the note and then nodded, "This is a serious affair. Let's check the murder site. We can gleam some information and also question the mill worker."

Saldrina blanches at the thought of the gruesome murder scene, but nods her acceptance.
Nov 17, 2025 4:49 pm

The sheriff leads you to a big building at the shore of the Tundarok River, the local lumber mill. You see two guards on duty and a couple of local citizen trying to pry information from them about what has happened. They scurry away when they see the sheriff and the the steely look in his eyes.

Before you enter the sheriff warns you. "It's not pretty inside. The victim are Banny Harker one of the mill operators and Katrine, the shopkeeper's daughter."

As you enter, you understand why he warned you. The first thing you see is that the interior is coated with sawdust strewn with footprints and splashes of blood. You can see the body of Katerine half inside the log splitter and half her body and part of her face have been brutally ripped apart.

Nearby to the north of the log splitter Harker's body has been affixed to the wall by several hooks normally used to hang machinery. The body is mutilated, the face carved away, and lower jaw missing entirely. His bare chest is defaced as well, bearing a strange rune in the shape of a seven-pointed star.

The star is familiar and is the same as the medallion you found on Nualia's body.

A rotting smell is hanging in the air througout the room, far more than two bodies should be able to produce in a few hours. Near the log splitter you can also see a handaxe embedded in the floor. The handle
is covered with bloody finger-marks
Nov 18, 2025 3:23 pm
Khel eyed the gruesome scene and almost felt like retching, but he kept himself from vomiting. He slowly walked towards the man's body and eyed the seven-pointed star and then looked at the body of the woman and then at the axe. He mentally tried to remember if he had heard anything about these two people in the town. Why would they end up here? Were they lovers? He then looked around trying to notice if something was missing. Finally he tried to remember anything about the seven-pointed star after all the reading he did with Brodert Quink.

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
The man, Banny Harker, has a reptutation as a penny pincher, but otherwise a well liked man. He owns the lumber mill along with Ibor Thorn (the man who found the bodies). You haven't heard anything about any bad blood between the two owners.

You know Katrine is one of the shopkeeper's (Ven Vinder) daughters. The other one is Shayliss, and she has a reputation for being promiscuous and many a man have been threatened with a pumelling due to their association with her. He seems to have been oblivious to the fact that his other daughter was similarly inclined.

Khel can reconize the seven pointed star as the Sihedron Rune, an antiquated glyph symbolizing arcane magic once practiced in ancient Thassilon. Looking closer at the body reveals the presence of several additional wounds. Unlike the deeper slashes on the body, numerous smaller gashes seem to have been made by claws.

The smell seems to come from the man's wounds.

You can also see sign of a struggle, it seems as if the footprints of Katrine have come at great speed towards the biggest pool of blood in the middle of the room, then been pushed into the log splitter. One of the footprints seems to be a barefoot humanoid.

Chigaru can confirm the barefeet clue, as he can see signs that someone climbed out of the river and left behind muddy footprints. They lead to a wall where it seems whoever it was climbed the wall to reach a second floor window.

"Remind me of the chopper's work mostly in the grizzly nature of it, he says. "This wasn't just a crime of passion. The killer took his time."

He's about to say some more whn another guard enters the room and whisper something in the his ear. He lets out a weary sigh. "Misery loves company it appears. I've got to go. Seems there's been an attack outside of town. A patrol was attacked on their way back to town."
Nov 19, 2025 5:03 pm
Upon hearing the girl is Katrine, Grim's face blanches. With half her face missing, he didn't recognize who it was. He had just seen her a few days before while visiting the general store, all bubbly and smiling, good-natured as always. Thinking of the Vinders hearing of this, the brutal nature of it no less, he lets out another "Poor bastards."

The attack takes him out of his thoughts, "Goblins again?"

Nov 20, 2025 2:05 pm
Trying not to look at Katrine's body, he instead focuses on Banny. "That's not the normal smell of death, there's something else to it, a sickness maybe. And it's a hell of a coincidence that another pointed star shows up weeks later."

Mulling it over, "Could be this cult made its way down here, trying to continue what Nualia started?". The red haze creeps in, "If so, it'll end as poorly."

I say we check with the sheriff (there was a disturbance nearby), let him know there's an undead element and we need Quint's expertise. Key takeaway: try and not cause a panic in the town. Those with the Big Mouth hindrance, shush!

When you get to the sheriff, you are led to wait outside while he is in a meeting. Though few minutes later, a watchman leaves his office in a hurry. You can see the watchman has a recent scar down the side of his neck, but looks to be fine. He nods at you.

The sheriff sees you and bids you to enter. Pinching the bridge of his nose as if it could pinch away all the tension he starts talking. "Good you came here. Saves me the effort to have to find you again."

"Oscar just informed me they were attacked during a routine patrol," he says. "A deranged man came running out of an abandoned barn near Cougar Creek. Eyes wild, mouth frothing and clothes caked with blood. They subdued him, but when they checked inside the barn they discovered the mutilated bodies of three men."

"The man that attacked them were given over to the care of Erin Habe, caretaker of an independent sanatorium south of town."

"What caught my interest was that all three bodies had some symbol carved into their chests. By Oscar's explanation it sounds similar to the one on Banny."

The abandoned barn is almost an hour south of Sandpoint. One guardman is already watching the place, and he nods at you as you approach.

Entering the barn you can see another grizzly murder scene. Three men lies butchered with lots of small cuts, similar to wounds you could see on Harker. They have all three a seven pointed star carved into their chest.

"I know these men," the sheriff says. "Tarch Mortwell, Lener Hask and Gedwin Tabe. Three local con men and swindlers. Been causing trouble up and down the coast. Not surprised to find them dead, just didn't think it would be in this way."

Looking over the body you find a curious note however.

Khel accompanied Grimwulf, Chigaru and Wess to the barn where the next murders were committed. He eyed the bodies and was surprised to hear that these victims were swindlers and con men. He stroked his beard and said, "Well, I don't know what to say, but nobody should die like this. Even if they are fraudsters. Then again, who is this lordship?" He turned to others after reading the note.

You spend some time looking over the crime scene, but find no more evidence. You help the sheriff load the the bodies onto his wagon and head back to town. It will soon be dawn, so you quickly catch a few hours of rest.

You wake up to dark clouds in the sky, and a drizzle of rain that proves to become worse as the day passes. It perfectly suits the mood of the town, as rumors have started spreading. Last time they had a serial killer it was a beloved citizen hiding in their midst, who's to say history won't repeat itself, and so there is a feeling of paranoia and distrust among the people of Sandpoint.

"Oh hello," Brodert answers the doors adjusting his glasses. "To what do I owe this visit?"

He is shocked to hear the news, though it smells like he hasn't left his house in days. All over his study is cluttered with opened books and several half written scrolls. "Still digesting the Thistletop ruins find," he explains.

Habe's Sanitorium

The squat, stone building that serves as the sanatorium has three floors under a stout, stone-flagged roof, and is built in the lee of the limestone escarpment known as Ashen Rise.

Walking up the steps to a veranda that leads to the front door, you think you may have announced your presence already as the steps make a horrible creaking sound. Though opening the front door you find yourself in a reception area with a desk and three chairs. A cord hangs from a hole in the southern wall above a sign that reads, 'Ring for service.'

There is a door to the north and to the south (next to the cord).
Dec 4, 2025 11:12 am
Chigaru causes the steps to squeak alarmingly under his large bulk and so he leaps over the last few steps to land on the veranda properly with a surprising lightness. Chakra whines and scratches at the first step. She has a fear of stairs.

Chigaru chuckles. "You need to learn to not fear the stairs. Although maybe this time your fear might be justified. I'm not sure dogs will be allowed in anyway. How about you stand guard out here?" Chakra yips in response and sits on her haunches in an alert position.

With that taken care of, Chigaru pulls the rope for service.

"We never got his name, but he butchered three men and carved a star in their chests, not to mention attacking some town guards. Ring a bell?" Grim responds, as he pulls the cord on the bell to make it sound again.

Khel nodded at Brodert Quink before entering his establishment. He prepares tea for the old man and then sits with him alongside the scrolls to discuss the murder and clues that have been uncovered up till now. "I don't understand the connection of this Sihedron rune that I am noticing everywhere. It was in all the victim's bodies. I found out about the Sihedron rune from a medallion that belonged to Nualia. But here it is used as a marking. Kind of arcane symbol. It is also emanating magic. I am not familiar with Thassilon magic but I want to know more about it. I could also sense necromantic energies coming from the corpses. I fear they are marked for reanimation, but I don't know anything about it. What is your take regarding this, Master Quink? Is this somehow related to the cult that took Nualia in?"
Dec 8, 2025 10:24 am
Brodert Quink

Brodert Quink
"Who's to say since we know so little about the cult she mentioned," Brodert replies. "But from what I've gathered the seven pointed star once represented the seven virtues of rule, Generosity, Zeal, Charity, Love, Humility, Kidness, Temperance."

"Though as the empire declined it took on a more sinister meaning. The seven sins Greed, Sloth, Envy, Lust, Pride, Wrath, Gluttony. Each one can be mapped to one of the seven schools of magic."

"Could be whatever cult it is has taken interest in Sandpoint due to what Nualia's notes called the runewell of sin. Seemed the well under the city was feeding on and enhancing rage. Could the killings be related?"

Habe's Sanitorium

Erin Habe
Doctor Habe looks over the list. "Yes, there was an admittance late last night," he says. "I'm afraid he is in a very precarious state of mind and I couldn't let anyone see him right now. He is confined to solitary for his own protection. I fear your presence will set him off rather than give any answers to his conditions."
Dec 8, 2025 12:07 pm
Chogaru frowns at the man. "I don't presume to question your methods, but we are strangers to this man. The presence of one of us should be no more disturing than the presence of yourself or one of your staff. If the man is guilty of what he is suspected of, I doubt his state of mind will be a worry you will have to bother yourself about much longer. I'm afraid our visit is very important and I insist on at least one of us fulfilling our goal." The half-orc crosses his massive green arms to drive the point home.

Khel raised his eyebrows in surprised, "I have never thought of the schools of magic being linked to the seven deadly sins. Are they somehow fueling the magic using the sins? I mean, that would explain why Nualia was so hellbent on attacking Sandpoint. Was the runewell powered by her wrath? Perhaps she was powering the runewell or was it the runewell that was powering her? But these attacks with victims having Sihedron runes carved on them must mean that some runic Thassilon magic is taking place again? Or is that runewell is acting up?"

"I think it the connection worked both ways. From what we read of her journal she seemed to be pregnated in the smuggler caves and it somehow warped her... fetus. But we check in on it daily, it has not shown any sign of acting back up."

"Perhaps the murders are an attempt to reawaken it. Nualia was trying to figure out how, maybe someone has succeeded where she failed."

Dr. Habe sighs. "Well I suppose I will make an exception this once... for the town's well being."

He takes out his keys and motions for you to follow him. He lead you into the southern door which lead into a big, mostly empty room, which seems to serve as a kitchen in one end. Some tables are set up but stands empty right now. The tables are thick with dust, indicating they haven't seen use in quite some time.

Three doors stand on the western side of the room, one bear the sign: 'Storage. Authorized personnel only'

In the southern end waits another door. Dr. Habe unlocks it and reveal a stairwell going up to the second floor. The stair lead up to a small room where another door stands. This one is secured with iron bands that the doctor once again unlocks and opens.

He lead you into what looks like a small common room with 5 cells around it. As the sound of the door opens two voices can be heard. One just makes a high pitched shrieking sound, the other sounds far older and can be understood. "Where am I? Get me out of here!"

"Poor Wald," Dr. Habe explains. "Seen some horrible tragedy. Every day he's back to the same day. His mind refuses to move on. Just keep following, the one you want is on the third floor."

So he lead you to another stairwell going up into a room with four more doors. One to the east has once again a sign of only authorized personell, but no explanation of what's behind it. The last three doors sits on the southern wall. Habe walks over to one of them and unlocks it. "Your mysterious stranger."

The man inside is pale and looks gangrenous, his hair wild and eyes milky white. He is secured in a straitjacket and he sits on a small uncomfortable looking bed, his upper body swaying back and forth. He's muttering some words under his breath, but you are unable to pick up the words.

Dec 10, 2025 1:01 pm
Chigaru walks in the middle of the hallways, out of reach of any of the doors. The place gives him the creeps. When they arrive and see the condition of their quarry, he heaves a big sigh. "I can't say I was hopeful about his condition but this is even worse than I thought. What's that he's saying?" He tries to listen closely. "The Skinsaw Man is coming? Hm..." Chigaru thinks it unlikely this man is their culprit after all. No one in his condition could have murdered people in such a fashion, and anyone who had commited such gruesome murders was unlikely to have been this affected by his own handiwork. He whispers his misgivings to his companions, out of earshot of the sanitarium worker.

Prevent it from activating?"

He thinks for a moment before he continues. "He said you should come to the Misgivings soon, to meet the Pack, for they have something wonderful to show you."

"The scarecrows!" the farmer, almost oblivious to Khel's presence. Then almost as if he notices him for the first time, he grabs Khel by the lapels of his robes. "They're alive boy! Alive!"

Khel grabbed the man and tried to hoist him up, "You are alright, my good sir. Calm down, I will take a look at this scarecrows of yours." He turned around and looked for any other people around to whom he may pass this man for care.

Khel considered the idea of looking for living scarecrows at this time all by himself. It was certainly not a good idea but he could also not ask for other as they already went to the sanitorium. He finally thought about visiting the Sheriff and looking for Shalelu. If he really needed to investigate these living scarecrows, he needed some help.

Khel is capable of calming the man, and by now several people have taken interest in the situation. One of the guards tries to scoot people away, but as soon as he realizes his authority don't outshine their curiosity he instead tries to guide Khel and farmer Grump to the Citadel.

With a cup tea in his hands the farmer tells a harrowing tale. "The southern farmland have become plagued by foul walking scarecrows that stalk the night," he explains to Khel and sheriff Hemlock. "There's been somethin' strange happening over at the old Hambley place. We've heard sounds comin' from there. And no one seen hide nor hair of old man Hambley. So we gathered up a posse."

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
"You should have come to me first," the sheriff butts in.

Farmer Grump
"Then you'd be as dead as the rest of 'em. The scarecrows killed 'em all. Even the dogs!"

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
"Don't know he's telling the truth," the sheriff whispers to Khel. "I could smell moonshine on his breath before you entered. But I don't want to take any chances. If you're inclined to check it out I can spare some men to go with you."

Chigaru grunts. "So am I. How did this one come to be here? Looks like he needs a different kind of healing. Do you treat in diseases of the body as well?"

Saldrina looks at Erin expectantly, waiting to hear his answer.

"His mind is broken," Erin explains. "If I succeed he'll only have to lock himself away one night a month. He has proven difficult to work with so far."

OOC:
Is there anything else you want to do here, or is it time to move on?
Jan 9, 2026 4:24 pm
"With al due respect, I'm not sure how much I like the idea of you having a secret pet wererat"
OOC:
I don't think we can do anything more here for now, probably best if we move on.

Still finding Habe untrustworthy, but with nothing concrete to back it up, Grim decided on one more tactic. FEAR.

Rushing up to the administrator, inches from his face, finger jammed into his chest, "I'll make your life more miserable than all the were-creatures in Golarion if you don't come clean!"
OOC:
I'll see if this jangles anything loose, otherwise let's move on

As soon as Grim moves, one of the orderlies grab for a club. Meanwhile Erin shrieks and balls himself together.

"The doctor told you to leave," the orderly says, his voice a deep grumble.

"There's no further need for violence here. We have done what we came to do." He moves to the leave and stops for a moment. "But don't be surprised if you get a sudden inspection from the sheriff in the coming days." He leaves the room and motions for the others to follow.

Grim gives the orderly a steely stare but heads toward the door after a moment.

Wess follows the other as the exit, gumbling; "Just when I thought this place couldn't get any creepier."

You are just out the door when you see Khel move up to the door with two of the Sheriff's guardsmen.
OOC:
You are back together, and Khel can explain what's happened back in town.
Jan 14, 2026 11:47 pm
At hearing Khel's tale, Grim shakes his head in annoyance. "This can't all just be a coincidence. We end Nualia and her crazy plan and all of a sudden Sandpoint starts going to sh*t?"

At the guards, "Are the Misgivings close to this farm?"
Jan 15, 2026 7:18 am
Chigaru greets Khel and the sheriff's two men. "The man found may or may not have commited the murders, but he was working on behalf of someone else, someone he called Master. The man is clearly insane and suffering. Have either of you heard the name Misgivings before?"

Chakra, who has been waiting patiently for the half-orc's return yips in excitement. Chigaru grins and picks up the dog after descending the front stairs outside the institution.

"The misgigivings?" one of the deputies asks. "You mean the old Foxglove Manor outside of town? Would be in the opposite direction of the farms."

Surprised at hearing the nobleman's name, "How is Foxglove tied up in this?"
Jan 15, 2026 9:39 pm
"I don't think we should split up again, not that I want to see animated scarecrows, or a haunted house." Wess says, wondering where they should head to next.
