Chapter 4: Lyrie's Sendoff

Nov 10, 2025 9:51 pm
It takes 12 days until finally the guards from Magnimar arrives with a prison coach. In the meantime, Shalelu has left town, to once again patrol the hinterlands.

The citizen have been quite taken with you and is bothering you for the story almost every day, and none of you have been able to pay for your own drinks in the intervening time.

One man especially have taken a great interest in your tales, Cyrdak Drokkus, the producer of the local theatre. He's informed you that he has started to write a play based on your adventures called the Heroes of Sandpoint. He believes it will be his next big hit. But to make it so, he has to get all the gritty details right and so he has been filling your head with question after question.

The squad leader takes all of your statements about the grizzly events that took place. You stand by and watch four guards chain up the wizard and transport her into the coach. As they do she gives you a look full of spite. And you are sure that if she wasn't gagged to stop her from casting, she'd have a few choice words for you.

Once the coach traverses the town gates and out of views, you are left standing outside the armory that houses the town guards.

"Once again I want to thank you for your help," Sheriff Hemlock asks with a smile. "May I ask what your plans are for the immediate future?"

Khel silently watched as Lyrie was taken to Magnimar. He wanted to help a fellow scholar who was researching Thassilon or was it that he wanted to know what she found out. He was willing to help her but once it was known that she was a convict for murdering more people, nothing could be done to save her. He turned to look the Sheriff and said, "Hmm, I think we should investigate the cult Nualia joined. I have a feeling that they know more about this runic magic of Thassilon and news of Nualia's failure would surely have reached them. We still don't know what they are planning."

Chuckling at the sheriff's question, "I'm good with sticking around here and enjoying the perks of being a hero of Sandpoint."

The chuckle dies off as Grim's eyes narrow, "But if there's a further threat looking to take that away, and harm these good people, then aye, we should investigate that. Anyone know anything about this Skinsaw Cult? Doesn't ring a bell to me."

Chigaru thinks for a moment. "My plan was to leave Sandpoint and stretch my legs, see some of the world and get some hands-on experience. But I can't ignore the coincidence that the attack on Sandpoint came on the same day I was celebrating my freedom as a fully ordained monk. Maybe it is a sign from one of the gods that I am yet needed here. I may linger for a few days and see if fate has anything more in store for me. If not, I'll take that as a sign that my job here is done and I will set out on a new adventure."

"Yes, news of this cult is disturbing," the sheriff nods gravely. "Go see Ameiko before you leave, I think she had plans to give those of you leaving a farewell party. And I think Cyrdak wanted to give the first preview of his new play."
Nov 13, 2025 9:13 pm
Saldrina shrugs. "I hadn't thought that far ahead, to be honest. But I can't help but think that this isn't over. Too many loose ends."
Nov 14, 2025 6:31 pm
"I came to Sandpoint seeking adventure. If that cult has any fight in 'em, might be worth checking out. Especially if they are a threat to the town."

The day passes, and in the evening Ameiko throws a party for the group. Cyrdak has some of the actors from the local theatre put up the first scene of his new play Heroes of Sandpoint. It is a short scene representing the attack on Sandpoint. Three dancers with oversized green helmets dance about while actors pretending to be you sing a song about how this used to be a quiet little coastal town.

It is all very strange and clearly still being worked on and not ready to be performed, but you guess Cyrdak want to show you what he has so far before you all leave town.

Cyrdak disappears in the middle of the performance and is back near the end with three bottles of Andoran Bubble Wine which he gladly shares with all of you. And Ameiko declares that the current keg will be free to all to drink and she expect it to be empty by the end of the night.

Grim gladly takes Ameiko up on her offer, enjoying the various wines and meads. He sings and claps along to the songs, and it's the loosest anyone in Sandpoint has seen the halfing be so far.

At around midnight the sheriff shows up. He looks dour and not in a mood to party. He goes over to each of you and quietly asks if he could meet you outside.

Once you are all outside in the chill autumn air he tells you some bad news. "I'm afraid I will have to delay your departure. Seems we have a murderer in our midst."

He lets the news sink in a moment before continuing. "Some of you doubtless remember the Late Unpleasantness, how this town nearly tore itself apart in fear at the killer we called Chopper. I’m afraid we might have something similar brewing now."

"Two bodies have been found at the sawmill. And they're... they're in pretty grusome shape. The bodies were discovered by one of the mill workers, a man named Ibor Thorn, and by the time my men and I arrived on the scene, a few curious gawkers had already sprung up."

"I’ve got my guards stationed there now, keeping the mill locked down, but the thing that bothers me isn’t the fact that we have two dead bodies inside. You see, I’m afraid this particular murderer knows one of you as well."

He holds out a bloodstained scrap of folded parchement to Grimwulf. You can see his name is written in blood on outside. On the inside is a short message:

"I guess this is the sign I was waiting for to tell me my time in Sandpoint is not yet over. You'd better take us to the scene, sheriff."
Nov 17, 2025 2:24 pm
Khel eyed the note and then nodded, "This is a serious affair. Let's check the murder site. We can gleam some information and also question the mill worker."
Nov 17, 2025 4:25 pm
Saldrina blanches at the thought of the gruesome murder scene, but nods her acceptance.
Nov 17, 2025 4:49 pm
Whatever mirth and good tidings Grim felt before stepping out into the chill evening quickly evaporates, in particular at mention of his name on the note. "What in the Nine Hells!?" he exclaims angrily.

Nodding at the others, "Let's go."

"Indeed, lead the way Sheriff!"

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
The sheriff leads you to a big building at the shore of the Tundarok River, the local lumber mill. You see two guards on duty and a couple of local citizen trying to pry information from them about what has happened. They scurry away when they see the sheriff and the the steely look in his eyes.

Before you enter the sheriff warns you. "It's not pretty inside. The victim are Banny Harker one of the mill operators and Katrine, the shopkeeper's daughter."

As you enter, you understand why he warned you. The first thing you see is that the interior is coated with sawdust strewn with footprints and splashes of blood. You can see the body of Katerine half inside the log splitter and half her body and part of her face have been brutally ripped apart.

Nearby to the north of the log splitter Harker's body has been affixed to the wall by several hooks normally used to hang machinery. The body is mutilated, the face carved away, and lower jaw missing entirely. His bare chest is defaced as well, bearing a strange rune in the shape of a seven-pointed star.

The star is familiar and is the same as the medallion you found on Nualia's body.

A rotting smell is hanging in the air througout the room, far more than two bodies should be able to produce in a few hours. Near the log splitter you can also see a handaxe embedded in the floor. The handle
is covered with bloody finger-marks
Nov 18, 2025 3:23 pm
Khel eyed the gruesome scene and almost felt like retching, but he kept himself from vomiting. He slowly walked towards the man's body and eyed the seven-pointed star and then looked at the body of the woman and then at the axe. He mentally tried to remember if he had heard anything about these two people in the town. Why would they end up here? Were they lovers? He then looked around trying to notice if something was missing. Finally he tried to remember anything about the seven-pointed star after all the reading he did with Brodert Quink.

The halfing takes some time to look over the scene, naseau, sadness, and simmering anger intertwined. "Poor bastards."

Heading back the sheriff, "Where exactly was the note found? And does any of this resemble the Chopper's work?"
Nov 18, 2025 7:02 pm
Saldrina looks a little pale, but she swallows hard, and her breakfast stays down. She surveys the scene, being careful where she steps to avoid stepping on evidence or slipping in blood.
