OOC:
I say we check with the sheriff (there was a disturbance nearby), let him know there's an undead element and we need Quint's expertise. I'd hold off on burning until we get more information (or they come alive). Hopefully there's no contagion. Pretty sure their families would want to see them, despite current grisly state. Key takeaway: try and not cause a panic in the town. Those with the Big Mouth hindrance, shush!

But I'm also down for whatever the group wants.

I concur with Grim. We need to let the sheriff know about the undead angle, and the families will no doubt want closure.

When you get to the sheriff, you are led to wait outside while he is in a meeting. Though few minutes later, a watchman leaves his office in a hurry. You can see the watchman has a recent scar down the side of his neck, but looks to be fine. He nods at you.

The sheriff sees you and bids you to enter. Pinching the bridge of his nose as if it could pinch away all the tension he starts talking. "Good you came here. Saves me the effort to have to find you again."

"Oscar just informed me they were attacked during a routine patrol," he says. "A deranged man came running out of an abandoned barn near Cougar Creek. Eyes wild, mouth frothing and clothes caked with blood. They subdued him, but when they checked inside the barn they discovered the mutilated bodies of three men."

"The man that attacked them were given over to the care of Erin Habe, caretaker of an independent sanatorium south of town."

"What caught my interest was that all three bodies had some symbol carved into their chests. By Oscar's explanation it sounds similar to the one on Banny."

With a worried look, "Maybe one of Nualia's lackeys we missed? Sheriff, was there a strange smell about this man, similar to the log mill? One of undeath."

"Truth be told I didn't know to ask," the sheriff replies. "But from what Oscar explained, he had the look of someone who had survived several days in the wild. He was covered in his own... filth."

"This is all too much!" Wess exclaimed, frustrated that he didn't have a single target to swing his ace at. "Should we question this lunatic? Investigate the woods? Patrol the town to try and prevent any further attacks? :

Chigaru strokes his chin in thought. "It is unlikely such a gruesome murder would be solved so simply. But we should speak with this man directly. If Desna watches over us then this man will be the culprit and our involvement will be at an end."
Nov 28, 2025 6:55 am
Snorting at Chigaru's comment, "Desna doesn't care one way or the other, but it's the only real lead we have. I still think we should wake Quint to see what kind of information he has about this, then take off to the sanitarium."

"Good luck with that," the Sheriff says with a sigh. "Habe is... peculiar. He's spent so long around nutjobs that they have started rubbing off on him. Besides, from what Oscar told me, they gave the attacker something to help him sleep, so depending on if it's magical or alchemical he may not be able to give any answers for a few hours."

"I thought I'd take a look at the stable myself," he continues. "You're welcome to join me if you'd like. I appreciate your expertise in this."
Nov 29, 2025 10:01 pm
"Good idea, maybe you'll find something we missed." Grim replies to the sheriff.
Nov 29, 2025 11:09 pm
"Looks like no sleep for us tonight." Wess grumbles.
Nov 30, 2025 11:15 am
Chigaru clears his throat.

"No sense in all of us being sleep deprived. One or two could go with the sheriff and the rest of us should get some sleep. I'll go to the sanitarium tomorrow. Does anyone want to accompany me?"

Chakra the dog gives a yip in confirmation and Chigaru smiles at her. "Well of course you're coming, Chakra, I was asking the others."

At his companions mention of sleep, the halfing suddenly feels tired himself, the excitement of the evening's festivities and murders suddenly starting to wear off. Still, there was the curious note and that was enough to keep him going for a bit longer.

Agreeing with Chigaru, "Sounds like a plan. I'll go with the sheriff, then get some sleep and meet up with you tomorrow."

"I'll also stick with the sheriff for now" Wess says

The abandoned barn is almost an hour south of Sandpoint. One guardman is already watching the place, and he nods at you as you approach.

Entering the barn you can see another grizzly murder scene. Three men lies butchered with lots of small cuts, similar to wounds you could see on Harker. They have all three a seven pointed star carved into their chest.

"I know these men," the sheriff says. "Tarch Mortwell, Lener Hask and Gedwin Tabe. Three local con men and swindlers. Been causing trouble up and down the coast. Not surprised to find them dead, just didn't think it would be in this way."

Looking over the body you find a curious note however.

Khel accompanied Grimwulf, Chigaru and Wess to the barn where the next murders were committed. He eyed the bodies and was surprised to hear that these victims were swindlers and con men. He stroked his beard and said, "Well, I don't know what to say, but nobody should die like this. Even if they are fraudsters. Then again, who is this lordship?" He turned to others after reading the note.

Saldrina reads the note and frowns. "Lured like lambs to the slaughter," she says.

You spend some time looking over the crime scene, but find no more evidence. You help the sheriff load the the bodies onto his wagon and head back to town. It will soon be dawn, so you quickly catch a few hours of rest.

You wake up to dark clouds in the sky, and a drizzle of rain that proves to become worse as the day passes. It perfectly suits the mood of the town, as rumors have started spreading. Last time they had a serial killer it was a beloved citizen hiding in their midst, who's to say history won't repeat itself, and so there is a feeling of paranoia and distrust among the people of Sandpoint.
OOC:
So, what will you do first? Quink? The sanitorium? Split up to do both? Any other ideas?

OOC:
I think we need answers first. If everyone has had time to rest, we can go to the sanitorium first?
Dec 4, 2025 5:39 am
OOC:
welp, so much for not causing a panic. Sure, the sanitarium works, then Quink. One other idea would be to see if anyone in town has the Object Reading power available, perhaps it can be used on the notes or presumed murder weapon (handaxe) to glean info on the killer(s).

And break the cardinal sin of any ttrpg game, 'never split the party'?! Let's do it!
