Smelling the scene as soon as the door opens, Chigaru pardons himself from going inside. "I think I prefer my sleep to be untroubled by what lies inside. I will check around the scene for tracks or anyrhing else suspicious. " The monk makes a circuit of the lumber mill, looking for footprints, blood drops, dropped murder weapons, and the like. His loyal dog Chakra trots at his side, nose sniffing along the ground.

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
The man, Banny Harker, has a reptutation as a penny pincher, but otherwise a well liked man. He owns the lumber mill along with Ibor Thorn (the man who found the bodies). You haven't heard anything about any bad blood between the two owners.

You know Katrine is one of the shopkeeper's (Ven Vinder) daughters. The other one is Shayliss, and she has a reputation for being promiscuous and many a man have been threatened with a pumelling due to their association with her. He seems to have been oblivious to the fact that his other daughter was similarly inclined.

Khel can reconize the seven pointed star as the Sihedron Rune, an antiquated glyph symbolizing arcane magic once practiced in ancient Thassilon. Looking closer at the body reveals the presence of several additional wounds. Unlike the deeper slashes on the body, numerous smaller gashes seem to have been made by claws.

The smell seems to come from the man's wounds.

You can also see sign of a struggle, it seems as if the footprints of Katrine have come at great speed towards the biggest pool of blood in the middle of the room, then been pushed into the log splitter. One of the footprints seems to be a barefoot humanoid.

Chigaru can confirm the barefeet clue, as he can see signs that someone climbed out of the river and left behind muddy footprints. They lead to a wall where it seems whoever it was climbed the wall to reach a second floor window.

"Remind me of the chopper's work mostly in the grizzly nature of it, he says. "This wasn't just a crime of passion. The killer took his time."

He's about to say some more whn another guard enters the room and whisper something in the his ear. He lets out a weary sigh. "Misery loves company it appears. I've got to go. Seems there's been an attack outside of town. A patrol was attacked on their way back to town."

Upon hearing the girl is Katrine, Grim's face blanches. With half her face missing, he didn't recognize who it was. He had just seen her a few days before while visiting the general store, all bubbly and smiling, good-natured as always. Thinking of the Vinders hearing of this, the brutal nature of it no less, he lets out another "Poor bastards."

The attack takes him out of his thoughts, "Goblins again?"
OOC:
was it mentioned where exactly the note was found (if it matters)?

"The note was found on the floor at Banny's feet," the sheriff says as he heads to the exit.

"I don't think it was goblins. I'm heading out to get some more information," he says. "I will be back if it's something that should be to your attention. Probably just regular bandits."
Nov 20, 2025 2:05 pm
Trying not to look at Katrine's body, he instead focuses on Banny. "That's not the normal smell of death, there's something else to it, a sickness maybe. And it's a hell of a coincidence that another pointed star shows up weeks later."

Mulling it over, "Could be this cult made its way down here, trying to continue what Nualia started?". The red haze creeps in, "If so, it'll end as poorly."
OOC:
Rolling Healing and Survival to see if the smell is due to infection, gangrene, etc, something he'd be familiar with during his time as a soldier.

Khel eyed the seven-pointed star and nodded at Grimwulf, "There is no mistaking. This is a Sihedron rune and related to Thassilon magic. It is possibly similar to what Nualia was using in her magic, which ultimately signifies that it is probably linked with cult activity."

The smell coming from the wound is not natural. In fact you do believe it is coming from the footprints as well.

OOC:
Anyways to analyze the smell? Like whether it's magical?

OOC:
You can give me an Occult roll at -2 to see if you can identify it.
Nov 21, 2025 8:17 pm
Saldrina breathes deeply, almost immediately regretting it, and tries to place the odor.
OOC:
EDIT: Forgot the -2, so a result of 5.

There is a strong smell of rot that could possibly indicate the presence of an undead.
Nov 22, 2025 3:50 am
Saldrina sniffles to clear her nose. "Undead," she says. "It's hard to mistake that scent."
Nov 22, 2025 6:19 am
Khel raised his eyebrows at the declaration Saldrina makes, "What? Really? We have to be careful." He moved back and took his staff to poke the body with the end of it.

From outside the lumber mill, Chigaru calls out, "There are footprints out here. Human perhaps. They come from out of the river and lead to the second floor. Looks like our killer came from outside Sandpoint and is good at climbing."
Nov 22, 2025 10:46 pm
"Bah, more undead." Grim mutters, as he heads up to the second floor to investigate.

You are fairly certain you've found all the clues you are likely to find. You scour every inch of the place. Nor does it look like the bodies left behind are more than just bodies, there is no remain of magical energy. You leave them for Father Zantus to give last rites.

"Could be fun cleaving a horde of undead. No pisoners, no pleas for surrender, just plow through until you find the bloke controlling them." Wess says, a little too excitedly.
Nov 24, 2025 3:36 am
Grim can't tell if Wess is making fun of him for his earlier decisions, but the dwarf seems genuine in his interest of destroying the undead.

Nodding in agreement, "Never dealt with them in battle, first time was here, but clobbering them back to death for what they've done seems like the next step to take. Maybe we take a sample back to Quink to have him identify it."

Do you want to head right to Quink or wait until the morning? It is around 1 a.m. by this time.
Nov 25, 2025 5:47 pm
OOC:
Should we check with the Sheriff? Wasn't there something else that happened? Also the bodies have undead magic, should we burn them?
