Menzoberanzan

You make your way to the house exit. To do so you pass through a long narrow tunnel filled with numerous deadly traps and then a solid adamantine door and beyond that a walled keep were a goblin tribe lives. The rest of Menzoberanzan assumes the tribe are slaves, the truth is that they just live there and have done so for a long time giving tribute to the house. Numerous times the Matron Mother or her wives have tried to explain that they don’t require Tribute but the goblins just don’t seem to really understand. In their world the less powerful tribes pay tribute to the stronger.

At least the goblins don’t bother you as you pass through and finally exit into the city proper. You note the westrift and look down on Blade street. There forges down there are strangely inactive and there isn’t the usual pall of smoke that generally stays over that area.

You start heading east towards the Bazaar passing by some of the other houses as you do so. You move along Hag’s walk and then immediately south avoiding Manyfolk where House Higure live. You enter the Northwest of the Bazaar passing the guards there and are about to head onto the Stumble when you note a commotion within the Bazaar.

A group of men, it looks like a number of Cultists from the Cult of Vhaeraun, are attacking a priestess and her entourage. T’rissae immediately recognizes the priestess as her ally Arduva Melarn. Arduva and her entourage look as if they might not win the encounter and the rest of the Bazaar looks on waiting to see who wins before snatching up the scraps.
Sep 17, 2025 3:55 am
Walking into the city, T'rissae's callousness and paranoia rise to the forefront of her demeanor. Ordinarily an open and kind-hearted woman amongst the safety of her own house, in the streets of Menzoberanzan she wears the mask of a Drow priestess as she does her armor: openly and well.

This time, though, something is different. Some unnatural stillness that set the hair on the back of T'rissae's neck tingling to attention. It takes a moment for her to recognize it, but when she does it's clear: the forges of the city had gone silent. Why? For a city that was absent it's primary dirty and thus vulnerable to attack, all efforts should be focused towards war and invasion.

But then, that would require the Drow to be a cohesive society. And that was very far from the truth.

The commotion in the Bazaar draws T'rissae's attention back to the present, where it belongs. Fighting in the streets already? Vhaeraun cultists against a priestess. The coup begins already. But who-

"Arduna!" T'rissae's blade is in her hands before the thought to draw steel has completed. By law, Priestesses of Lolth were honor-bound to each other's defense, especially against males. In practice that was somewhat more flexible, depending on who was under assault. Doubly so for T'rissae given her true allegiances.

But Arduna Melarn was an ally. Maybe even a friend.

This was a strange group. Capable. But strange. Introductions were brief and everyone mostly kept to themselves. Ryo’fein was glad he had friends amongst the group.

They were still within the city, so he stayed with the group, his head bowed in deference to the female drow, but even with his eyes cast down, it was hard to miss the ring of combat from the bazaar.

T’rissae shouted a name in distress, and Ryo’fein’s body moved of its own accord in reflex. Shortbow out, arrow nocked, he sidled forward, eyes scanning for a target.

"Point the enemy, my lady." He said to T’rissae, though it was easy enough to guess, given the cultists in view. He moved in front of her to protect the Platin noble.

"Bor!" He called his dwarven friend, and nodded towards the commotion, a slight smile on his face.

Just like old times.

Keeping her head high, her demeanor every bit the confident and imperious drow she had once been, Narcaere walks along with the motley crew she has found herself in. She's still getting used to the idea of travelling with people she trusts.

Not that she ever lets down her guard completely. And so she is not caught off-guard by the violent commotion.

T'rissae Platin charging into the melee without a seconds hesitation? That does catch her off-guard, even though it probably shouldn't.

Focus. Stay calm. Keep it under control. Focus.

Cursing quietly, she draws her rapier and follows behind Bor and Ryo, weaving spells under her breath as she works to keep her chaotic magic under control.

The battle is joined and Trissae is able to meet up with the Scion of House Melarn. In a somewhat familiar manner, the two women find themselves fighting back-to-back once again. Arduna laughs, "Hey there Triss, just like old times huh?"

The cultists of Vhearaun themselves are far more numerous than you'd first thought with some coming from out of the onlookers to attack you screaming their anger and discontent as they attack. You can almost understand their anger, you know all too well the unfairness of life outside House Platin walls and while some of you might accept that murder might further your goals you know that this chaotic and utterly useless attack will do nothing for anyone right now.
OOC:
Combat Rules
For certain combat events, such as this one, instead of the usual round by round dynamic I will present the combat as a challenge with potential penalties and rewards based on your rolls and expenditure of spell slots and the like. This ensures that combat with certain Challenge Rating foes goes quicker, and it represents the fact that such combat, while dangerous for your characters, is not necessarily deadly.
Battle Goals and Consequences:
Arduna survives the battle - 1 1st Level Spell slot or a total of 200 damage done
Arduna's retainers survive the battle - 2 1st level spell slots or a total of 300 damage done
Your character avoids taking 15 damage - A successful attack roll or spell cast including cantrips

To do damage you must hit AC 15

Inability to speak doesn’t prevent dwarven grunts and battle-laden utterances. Which is all Bor needs, as our fightery fellow exclaims an incoherent command word - and instantly growing to Large size!

Burny reflexively looks for cover, somewhere within 60' of the battle but where those in the battle can't see her and she can't see it. IF there are no signs of Faerzress, she looks through Yao Pu's invisible eyes (casting using Gaze of Two Eyes), fumbles out a jeweled object, and Summons a Celestial Defender there next to the two embattled priestesses. The one traveling with us gets the temporary HP unless one is injured in which cast the more injured one does. The invisible imp/raven moves after casting, staying within range but not wanting to be targeted.
OOC:
Does summoning count as teleportation for Faerzress? If the characteristic dim light is there and summoning is more difficult, she will use a different spell . . . eldritch blast as fallback.

The battle ends with more than twenty dead cultists. The Vhearaunites fought to the last and now the rest of the Bazaar is waiting for you to take any spoils before they descend on the bodies.

Arduna and her guards look at your group. The women of the guard waiting for the politics. Arduna steps to Trissae and bows deep. "My house will recognize a debt owed to House Platin for this."

Where the guards can’t see she signs, "Contact me later, this may be an advantage for both our houses."

With that, she and her guards quickly head to her House. Then, you continue on your way.
You make it fully across town on the eastern side of the city. House Baenre occupies the highest tier in the main cavern of Menzoberranzan, at the eastern end of Qu'ellarz'orl.

The compound is roughly oval in shape, three-eighths of a mile long and a quarter-mile wide, surrounded by a magnificent and magical fence that has the appearance of a silver spider's web wrapped around the general blue hues of the Baenre compound twenty feet high, this barrier is formed of iron strands as thick as a Drow’s arm, and enchanted so that anything touching it becomes stuck fast until the matron mother of the house wills it to be freed. Rumors suggest that not even the sharpest of drow weapons can put a nick in this Lolth-given gift.

Entrance is gained through one of several symmetrical web-gates, the principal one being set between the outer compound's tallest two stalagmites, which spiral out, creating a circular gap.

It is at one of these web-gates, that you find yourself right now. One of the elite female warriors of House Baenre looks upon you with disdain, "What house sigil is that? House Baenre has no time for commoners."

Knowing his place, Kalafein does not speak unless spoken to, especially if a priestess is present to speak on his behalf. He utilizes his Drow High Magic to detect any magical trinkets the cultists may have on them - and attempt to lay claim to the most powerful of any such item that might be present.
[ +- ] Drow High Magic
At the Baenre compound gate, Kal stands as a proud noble male but ensures his eyes do not meet any female who does not directly speak to him. He remembers that even the lowliest female Drow outranks him in Drow society.

Quick and efficient. Ryo'fein nodded at the job well done. He didn't loot the corpses, instead staying back protectively by the drow noble, eyes alert. Who knew what dangers might strike.
At the gates of House Baenre, once again he slinked to the back, hood down low over his face. Too many enemies from that family. And besides, it wasn't his place as a male to greet a female drow--especially a Baenre one.

Still, the words angered him. For House Platin to be brushed aside so casually as some commoner, Ryo'fein couldn't help the involuntary rage that simmered in him, even if he did know the words were likely calculated to draw such ire.

He stayed still, though his eyes roamed for danger.

"With even better odds!" T'rissae quips back, lowering into a defensive stance.

She needn't have bothered, though. The prowess of her house and companions could not be denied, and every Vhaerunite lay dead in a matter of heartbeats. Good. She hated killing, even when there was no other choice. If it must be done, let it be done quickly.

With the violence settled, T'rissae weighs her ally. Acknowledging the bow with one of her own, she sees Arduna's sign and signs back, "I will." "House Platin accepts. Take care, sister. The streets run red with blood," she said aloud cooly, playing the part of a priestess. Regarding the bodies with disdain, she waves dismissively at them before turning away. Her companions did not need her permission, of course, but giving it was good cover.
Stepping forward and lowering the hood of her Piwafi, T'rissae says in a loud and clear voice, meeting the warriors gaze in staunch resolution. "I will not be confused with some commoner," she sneers, showing her house sigil. "We are of House Platin, here at the request of the Matron Mother of House Baenre. I am T'rissae, Second Daughter of High Priestess Silveria. Allow us entry; your Matron Mother is expecting us."

The guard sighs and opens a scroll to read off a quick "message" spell. A few moments later the door opens, and a young Priestess of Lolth and her entourage greet you. "Ladies, I am Demarina Baenre follow me, the rest may follow at a distance until we arrive at more appropriate location for them." The absolute disgust in her voice for everyone else is quite clear.

There is no warmth to this place, there is a cold harsh feeling to the halls and art that evokes power and violence. There are no small nooks where two or more might gather. The Baenre compound is in and of itself like a spider web and you are lead to the center before the Priestess gestures to a room that opens up. "Your attendants may wait here, a male of the house will explain the situation to them in small words that both he and they might understand." Those of you who are not female Drow head in and are greeted by a male of the Baenre household, he's dressed in fine silks and looks as if he's some sort of apprentice.

He greets you, "I'm Telairn Baenre, I'm here to explain the mission to you. Did you want some food or drink before I begin?" He gestures to plates and glasses around a table and, while it smells okay, you've smelt better in the Barracks Kitchens of House Platin where the soldiers eat between shifts let alone the delicious meals in the Common Quarters or the utterly fabulous meals you've had during celebration days. Plus, of course, it could be poisoned, you never know.

He begins once you're settled. "The Matron Mother wants your group to go to Mearimydra and find out what's happened there and report back. She'll give the women a journey book to write in every day. I have some maps of the place and know something of the journey from books." He certainly looks more suited to reading books than actually surviving beyond the walls of Menzoberanzan.
When the women walk into the receiving room of Matron Mother Quenthal Baenre there are no places to sit, no chair surrounding the Matron Mother's. Nothing in this place suggests family ever meets here. Having just seen your own Matron Mother and felt the warmth and care in her presence the lack here is striking and hostile. You know you must kneel on the floor before her and when you do you can feel the very stones beneath your knees spike up to cause pain along with jolts of electricity. Nothing enough to truly damage but clearly enough for you to be in pain before her.

Matron Quenthal Baenre is thin and pointed every part of her seems sharp. The white spider web tattooed upon her face stands out along with the high layered hair. Her ruby red eyes stare at you with a keen wisdom and clear disdain. She rudely points at Narcaere, "You girl, weren't you with some other house? It seems House Platin is always picking up trash from the streets."

Her eyes alight on Silver and T'rissae and says, "T'rissae, I remember the news of you and that Melarn girl surviving an assassination attempt but your sister Silver there I don't recall much of her time in Arach Tinilith, was she just one of the followers, some boring nobody? Well, I hope her uselessness there does not hurt the mission." All pointed words and all pure venom spewed out knowing that she is in power and must be respected despite it.

Once she is bored of enjoying herself by humiliating you and your family she sighs and holds out three items. There are two scroll cases and a leather-bound book. "I have a missive for you to deliver to the ruling house of Sith Morcane. Beyond that this is a signed letter with the Sigil of the Ruling council giving you permission to do whatever is necessary in order to investigate the matter of missing shipments and letters. You will find out what has happened and report back to one of my assistants daily for further instructions. That is all."

Matron Baenre clearly does not want questions, nor will she respond to any. She sets the book, and two letters on a table next to her chair utterly ignoring the person who comes to take it. Her red eyes watch you with a smile when you back out of the room. Then, when you read the letter of permission you note that it is carefully written to ensure House Baenre can determine what is and is not truly necessary.

With a polite gesture, Kalafein declines refreshment while glancing around the room, pretending to admire the Baenre's architecture. He finally speaks once the Baenre male is done. Ryo'fein gave smile and a brief nod, enough to be polite to the ruling House. There was no reason to be antagonistic, though he declined to partake in any refreshments. Even amongst male members, Ryo'fein couldn't hold a high station given his mixed blood, and so he stayed at the back as expected, and kept a deferential head down.

Kalafein seemed to have the situation well in hand. Ryo'fein would be curious to see the map. Ideally, they'd be able to take it, but even a glance to study it and commit as much to memory as possible would be better than nothing.

Silver is secretly amused that someone from House Branae is even bothering to waste time insulting members of a house so low down on the totem pole. Certainly, she could have better things to do than waste time insulting nobodies like us. Is she so insecure of her position in House Branae that she has to take her frustrations out on a bunch of nobodies?
Sep 25, 2025 10:09 am
Keeping her head bowed in deference—a loathsome stance she was still not used to—Narcaere keeps quiet under the Matron Mother's barbs. Her magic might be beyond her control, but her tongue is not. Offering even the slightest retort can only lead to something far worse, likely for the whole group.

Instead, she keeps her attention on the mission lined out for them. To give a ragtag group like them—from another, lesser house, no less!—such a carte blanche to act however they saw fit? Either house Baenre were desperate, or they were planning to screw them all over. Likely both. Reading the letter of permission only reinforces that notion for her.
Sep 26, 2025 3:42 am
Kneeling as was proper - and grimacing as was expected - T'rissae endured the barbs that she knew were coming. She knew this was part of the game, part of how the Baenre household maintained its dominance. Part of daily life among all drow. That knowledge did not lessen their sting, however.

"It shall be done, Mistress," T'rissae said as she rose, keeping her eyes on the floor. Gingerly stepping forward and taking the scrolls & book as though she were stepping under the fangs of a hungry spider, T'rissae and the others step back out of the room.

"Is this it?" she asked once they were well away from the Matron Mother. "Missing shipments, silent priestesses and lost raiding parties, of those fools from House Higure no less?" T'rissae scoffed in annoyance. Glancing at Demarina (assuming she remained their escort inside the halls of the compound) she considered the best way of teasing information out of the woman and settled on dismissive sarcasm. "Are we sure that the rabble that house employs didn't simply get lost due to their own foolishness?"

Meanwhile she scoured her own memory for what she knew about their destination.

Kalafein finds Telairn easy to wheedle information out of. The young male is clearly more like a slave to the House Wizard than anything else and any number of pleasing words and tiny recognition has him telling everything he knows and happily giving over the maps that he has. "Well, it seems Lolth isn't answering prayers, the house sent the first daughter and others to find out why. They are grabbing as many of the other houses and sending them to do their bidding in different ways." Kalafein understands that this is make work, a way for House Baenre to assure that some of the more powerful members, like yourselves, from other houses are elsewhere so that they aren't fomenting rebellion here.

T'rissae finds Demarina less persuadable than Kalafein finds her distant brother or cousin and yet the priestess is able to gather some information even as Demarina insults House Platin. "Well as the fourteenth house you should recognize your place. The bidding of House Baenre and the Council are important no matter how lowly the task may be." At the same time T'rissae knows that Szith Morcane has historically been a place where Baenre influence was powerful outside the city. House Morcane has long been their thrall and if the forces of that house could be brought into Menzoberanzan it would assist House Baenre in holding everything in the city together.

Considering their options, Kalafein proposes a course of action. "Priestess T'rissae, if you would allow, I have a proposition for you to weigh. Travel through the wilds of the Underdark can be treacherous, as we all know. Planning our journey by studying these maps could be crucial to the success of our mission and our survival." He clears his throat. "That being said, I understand that allies can be just as valuable and your meeting with House Melarn may provide just that. Then there is the matter of the silent smiths and their cold forges. A peculiar event and one that may provide valuable information or other material benefits." Kal makes a subtle gesture of dismissal at his last statement to signify his leaning. "I defer to you wisdom in deciding which of these matters must be left to the wayside."

Oh sweet Loviatar, not ANOTHER meeting with another House of Drow. Burny was tired of feeling like an empty egg sac.

"Well, you studious types can memorize the maps and the priestesses can meet with the Melarns. I doubt I'd be much use with either so maybe Bor there and I can go check out the forges."
Sep 27, 2025 2:28 am
Ryo’fein waited for the others to finish speaking before adressing T’rissae and chiming in. House Platin may live by different rules, but a traveling party needed a leader lest they split at a crossroad.

"I’m a scout, maps are where I’d be most helpful. That said, I’m even better stalking the shadows, so if you need help traveling through the more unsavory parts of the city, I’m capable of that, as you well know."

He smiled warmly at the last words.
OOC:
We have like 6 or 7 people in our party right? I’d say split up into 2 groups and get both things done. Maps is obvious choice for being super helpful for a journey, but having an ally could also be useful.

I’m probably missing some context, but I don’t see how it’d benefit our ultimate goal by finding out why Baenre isn’t crafting weapons. I mean, not as useful as the other 2 options imo.

"Good, but just call me Burny unless you want me referring to you as 'Master Dwarf.'"
Sep 27, 2025 8:47 pm
Giving Kalafein a subtle nod of permission that they both knew he didn't actually need, T'rissae listened and considered to her older "nephew." And to each of the members of her house and travelling companions in turn. It was an exercise in leadership that she had observed in her grandmother, and though she had no designs on rising higher in her house that didn't mean she couldn't put those lessons to use.

"Good suggestions, all," she said, weighing their options. "I would like to check back with Arduva. She had given me a subtle message that she wanted to speak. I will go to House Melarn, though I'm not confident in splitting up given the violence and unrest in the city. Silver, Narcaere, will you join me?"

"As for the other two tasks..." T'rissae paused. Looking at Burny and Bor, she said, "I would say that studying the maps would take priority, but if you two want to check with the forges then I will not stop you. It does put all four of you at a disadvantage moving through the city, though. Are each of you okay with that?"

Ryo’fein clucked his tongue. "I’m used to working alone. Having a partner will essentially guarantee success."

He smiled with brash confidence.
OOC:
The maps are just here, right? Doesn’t seem too dangerous.

Narcaere inclines her head slightly in deference. "A bit risky, but a sound plan. Of course, I will accompany you. It seems we will need all the allies we can get."
Sep 30, 2025 7:02 pm
The Forges
For a brief period of time those going to the forges and those heading to House Melarn are going in a very similar direction. The Forges are south and West closest to the wall while House Melarn is south and right next to the deadly area of Menzoberanzan called "Lolth's Web" where within the stalagmites and stalactites are numerous spider webs and large spiders to go with them. All manner of meat is dropped here by that unfortunate enough to be roped into the job, and it is relatively often that the people sent to drop off the meat for the spiders often become food for them as well. Though, supposedly, there is a gang that works within the web as well.

The Forges in the City are deadly quiet, the doors shut tight and numerous defenses set. By now the news of Lolth's Silence has spread and with it these lower houses and commoners alike ought to be crafting armor and weapons to sell in the Bazaar where others will buy them for a tidy profit. At first you wonder what could be keeping them inside and away from their tasks and then you start seeing bodies. Here and there Drow and slaves have dropped to the ground dead, their bodies cold and some with flecks of frost on them.

The guardian lion spirit wavers in Burny's view as her knowledge of religion helps her recognize this type of death. A Banshee, the spirit of a female elf whose power in life was enough that in death she's become a mournful spirit. Usually, a priestess is able to send such spirits into death though sometimes a more powerful priestess will bind the Banshee to their will. It's quite likely that some priestess here lost control over this spirit when Lolth went silent. The guardian spirit looks off and she gets the feeling it wants her to put the spirit to a gentle rest. Her imp, of course, takes the moment to but in, "Not our problem, it won't go away if we just kill it. You need to find what caused its misery and then it will disperse. Don't listen to the stupid guardian, just go on and leave these people. No skin off our nose if the Banshee kills them all, probably serves them right..."
House Melarn

Near the deadly web is a well-fortified location, or a place that used to be so. House Melarn, the Fifth House of the City, has clearly seen better days. Those same Vhearaunite corpses are everywhere around the house with parts of the wall broken and nearly destroyed. Basically it looks like a small war just happened here. A Drow woman wearing blood stained armor greets you as you arrive. At first her hackles are up as are her sisters in battle but, then she notices your House Sigil and she slumps. Suddenly she looks tired and worn. She clearly doesn't have the energy to play the game of politics as she simply speaks in near full honesty, "You must be the daughter of House Platin come to speak with our new High Priestess Arduva? If so, then she is with the new Matron Mother and a small cadre of our higher ranks."

That alone tells you much of what has occurred. Looking at the bodies on the ground you can see that many of House Melarn's men lie dead fighting not against, but along with the cultists of Vhearaun. The inner council in the house made up of the Priestesses of Lolth with Zhindia Melarn and Kyrnill has been lost in this battle and the house itself has been torn apart.

Maps and the Magister
You return to House Platin with the maps there you are, amazingly enough, able to get the attention of your House Magister. Vern, as is usual for him, is his full bony self. A skeleton wearing a fashionable hat, black robes, and blazing red eyes he would be far more frightening but clearly, he'd recently been in with some of the youngsters because his arms have various drawings all over them.

As you set out the maps he places another set down and a quill lifts in the air noting on his maps the differences between them and the ones you've brought. "It's always nice when someone brings me new knowledge. Look at this here, I didn't know there was a group of Orcs living there. Hmm, and this cavern has Yrthak does it? I wonder how the caravans go through?"

He likely gets blank looks from you (DC 18 Nature) as he speaks of the creatures and even if he doesn't the Lich does love the sound of his own voice. "Yrthak are distant cousins of dragons. Long thin jaws with sharp teeth, about twenty meters long, no eyes, they can "see", he holds up a pair of skeletal fingers to make air quotes, "sound. You make any noise going through these caverns and you'll be swarmed by them. You'll need someone to cast a silence spell or a scroll if I can find one for you."

His skeletal finger traces the rest of the path to the small trading town. "Three days I should think. The first day you'll have to deal with the Yrthak. The second keep an eye out for the Mind Flayers and the third take care to be wary of the terrain and possibly Umberhulks. Shall I pontificate upon the weaknesses of the other foes?" He's just a skull and bones and yet you swear he's smirking at you.

Our dwarven fellow gazes obsidian-black eyes upon the frosted dead.

Well now, I s’pose there’s no point in tryin’ ta enter de forges. They’re closed up tight, any ol’ ways! B’sides, it’s clear enough why they’ve gone so silent o’ late. A blasted banshee!

What d’ya think, Burny?! Shall we head on back n’ report what we’ve found?

Banshee, yes. It would take a cleric to lay it to rest, slaying it isn't enough. That, or finding out why it haunts this area. We can discuss it but as I don't know the web of entanglements and alliances here, our house may not be anxious to insert itself into another troubled area. You are right that this information has to go back.

As we head back, Burny has her temporary hit points in place (always, actually!) and has Yao Pu (raven) fly up and scout ahead. He is to look for dangers, but also others of our party.
Sep 30, 2025 10:58 pm
Ryo'fein listened intently as the lich showed off its intellect. He found himself shaking his head several times, unfamiliar with the creatures that Vern spoke of.

"Does the Silence magic move along with us as we move?" He asked. "Would these Yrthak be able to detect... the lack of sound traveling? I fear that an area utterly devoid of sound might be detected. And yes, please, tell us what dangers the terrain holds, and the weaknesses of the other foes."

Though no stranger to the lich of House Platin, Kalafein finds himself forcing his focus onto the red eyes instead of the sunken flesh of his face. Though "flesh" may be stretching the truth just a bit as it was more preserved parchment than actual skin.

Kalafein shared in Vern's joy of new knowledge as he glanced between the maps. He nearly doesn't recognize the word for the dragon-cousin as he looks helpless but eager to listen about these fascinating creatures.

"Please, Magister, I welcome any and all knowledge you would offer to share with me." He waits a heartbeat before offering a query. "If a Silence spell, which I do believe we will require a scroll, facilitates our passing by the ythrak, would not mind shielding magics provide the same benefit to our party as we travel through their territory? If not, what sort of delay might we face by traversing around that particular danger?"

Kal turned to Ryo'fein. "I know of objects enchanted to emanate the Silence spell. A scroll should do the same if only temporarily. I believe a lack of sound to the ythrak would be akin to us being invisible to a sighted creature. There exists the possibility that it detects us, but not from their main sensory input. Our odds of survival are nevertheless increased."

He didn't say anything yet, but Kal thought terrain and Umberhulks may be within his party's grasp of handling.

T'rissae could hardly be called naive. Her experiences at Arach-Tinilith had left her calloused, cynical and wary of anyone and everyone who wasn't a member of her house. And yet, it was walking into the near-ruin that was the fortress of House Platin that truly established the true scale of the impact of Lolth's silence. If one of the Six Houses could be damaged this badly, what was in store for House Platin?

Stepping over the dead in confused dismay at the brazenness of the Vhearaunites - and the scale of the damage they inflicted - T'rissae almost missed the title that the soldier had used.

Almost.

"H-High Priestess? Arduva?" T'rissae stammered. She hadn't been expecting that. Mentally tracing the Melarn family tree until she got to Arduva, she did her best to regain some level of composure and resume the game that all Drow played in public. Though if she were honest, she doubted she was very convincing.

Just as well. This soldier seemed tired of the game too.

"Yes, lead us to them."

OOC:
I had Ryo ask because as far as I know, the spell is cast on a specific location, not a specific item. A scroll just allows someone to cast the spell, so that wouldn't change anything. Maybe there are items as you say though. But anyway, I was asking for confirmation from the DM.

oh, sorry. I was just playing as Kal and honestly hoping that I could convince the DM to handle it this way. It's a far more interesting spell if it acts as the Light spell and can be cast on objects and held/thrown.

The Forges and Gates of House Platin

You leave the area behind seeking out areas that are less likely to be haunted by a Banshee and perhaps putting your hands to your ears just in case. You arrive back at House Platin and hear a roar, for a moment you feel the utter fear (DC 16 Wis save) coming from the immense adult black dragon that lands right next to you and perhaps find yourself scurrying away from your inevitable fate before the aura fades away.

Your heart is beating fast as you hear a small chuckle. "Apologies, I didn't notice that you were part of the house until I saw your sigils. I hope I didn't scare you too much. I just got home and am greeting all visitors." Dakkon the Black, the immense Black Wyrm raised from a hatchling by your Matron Mother stands before you in all of his awesome glory. He stretches his wings and muscles a bit and his big yellow eyes stare at you. This is the first time you've met him. Shishi had turned into his Lion like form and a huge, clawed hand drops down to delicately stroke him.
Magister Vern is Didactic

He opens a pouch at his side and rifles through it; scrolls drop onto the table haphazardly until he finds one. "Ah here it is, this should work on an item for a day or so. The Yrthak won't be able to detect you with the silence spell so that should work no need to add extra days on your journey. As for the Umberhulks that won't work they can feel the movement of the ground. A good fear spell might work to scatter them, but I make no guarantees. Also, make sure you are mentally protected or just avoid looking at their eyes."

He shuffles through more scrolls dropping even more and making the mess worse, "Ah here we are fear oh and a Magic Circle vs Evil too. No, probably won't want a scroll. Hmm, now where did I put it..." He puts his head and half his body into his magic bag and comes out with a wand. "Ah, here it is a Wand of Circle of Protection vs Evil. Excellent for Umberhulks and those pesky Mind Flayers. Keeps everything in here.." He taps his bare skull, "From becoming mush. Mind flayers are going to be resistant to every mental magic, personally I like to disintegrate them but, I suppose other spells and your weapons will do the trick."

He looks at the pile of scrolls and other detritus he's pulled from his bag, snaps his bony fingers and it all floats itself back into the bag. "Now, where was I. Oh, while you are in Szith Morcane can you drop by Sorcere there? It's not a terribly big deal but, the headmaster there borrowed my copy of Szass Tam's 'on Ghoul and Ghast Sapience' and I would like it back."
OOC:
Wand Mass Protection vs Evil. This wand allows you to cast the spell 'Protection vs Evil' once per day on as many creatures as you can see. It lasts for 10 minutes and has no need for concentration.

House Melarn

Just as you are walking up into the compound suspended in Lolth's Web you see a huge black dragon swoop down from your house and onto something or someone that was approaching. Dakkon, your house Wyrm and an Adult Black Dragon is apparently here in the city.

As you are escorted up into House Melarn you see Driders and Giant spiders dead from fighting against each other and the forces of House Melarn. You'd heard that some males in the house had become Arachnomancers and apparently this was true. Unfortunately, it seems that many of those Arachnomancers turned against the house in this battle.

You find Arduva and her aunt Zovaralla meeting with other women of the house when you arrive. Arduva gestures to your group, "If not for House Platin I would have been lost in the Bazaar and we would have no priestesses."

Arduva puts a hand on her aunt's shoulder, "Just hear her out. I personally would like to survive this Silence of Lolth and their house has not seen any internal rebellion so far. Their forces have not been halved over the afternoon and maybe, just maybe they can provide some aid. If we have to owe them favors then we must do so."

Zovaralla is perhaps in the middle of her life. You can't quite recall if she was 7th or 8th in line to be Matron Mother. She is rather plump for a Dark Elf and her eyes are purple instead of red much like many of your own house members. From her bloody and rent dress it's quite obvious that while she was in the middle of the fighting, she is clearly not a cleric or a fighter. Noting a wand at her hip you think she's likely a wizard. You also note that her silver hair has blonde streaks in it here and there, likely meaning her father was a 'surface' elf. She looks to your group her back straight and her poise perfect "So, because you are 15th you won't stab us in the back tomorrow? I never had the ability to speak with the Spider Queen and my Neice has guidance from Lolth on this. So, you were allied when you went to school? You didn't backstab you then so maybe you won't now?"

She looks at you with keen and discerning eyes and you feel a spell drift over you as she says, "Go on, tell me what aid you might offer and why I should trust you and your house?"

Burny took a moment to regain her composure. She thought of herself as tough and all but a dragon landing next to you unexpectedly was . . . unnerving.

"A welcome greeting to you, Dread One. It is actually quite heart warming to see that you are here in this time of difficulties and unrest when other houses might take this opportunity. We go forth again soon, but need to regather our party first so you can expect. You can expect 3 others to be returning from a meeting as well though vigilance is always needed. "

Menzoberranzan had been thrown into great chaos indeed. Melarn decimated nearly over night, Zovaralla thrust into the role of the new Matron?

Narcaere could not help but wonder what the other houses looked like right now. How was Xorlarrin faring in times like this?

She bit back on the desire to reply in cold disdain towards the would-be Matron Mother. This was not her first time being interrogated under a truth spell. But adopted into house Platin or not, she would not presume to speak on its behalf. Not with T'rissae and Silver Platin next to her.
Oct 5, 2025 7:57 pm
Entering the inner sanctum of House Melarn almost as soon as she had finished her internal analysis of their line of succession, T'rissae had just enough time to recover her shock before standing before the new Matron Mother. Zovaralla Melarn. A woman who, almost certainly, had never suspected that she would sit in so high a position of authority outside of whatever outlandish plots she had imagined and then discarded.

There was a strange irony to that thought. Doubly so when applied to Arduva.

Bowing as was proper and greeting the new Matron Mother as was proper, T'rissae paused and considered the questions and their importance when the tingling sensation of magic press itself on her mind. For a moment T'rissae considered resisting Zovaralla's spell, but just as quickly reconsidered and let the magic wash over her. "Well, to answer the last and most important of your questions, Honorable Mistress, I'm not sure there is anything I could say that would convince you. But perhaps you might consider my submission to your truth-compulsion spell enough of a reassurance of our goodwill. We have no designs to threaten your house nor to usurp your house's position."

That was certainly true. The designs they did have were just a little bit larger than the game the Houses played.

"You understand my shared history with Arduva," she continued, adding, "She and I defended each other in Arach-Tinilith, and I came to her aid in the streets only a few hours ago. That is twice that I have had the chance to strike, both through action and inaction, and chose not to. Even if offered a third chance at her unguarded back, I would not strike her. She is my...friend."

This last sentence caught T'rissae off guard. She knew how to play the game of politicking that the Drow elite played, and beyond that her own (quite rational) concern for the safety and security of her house made her suspicious of everyone else. With those two facts of life in mind, she had never considered it possible for her to have a friend that she wasn't related to in some way. And yet...she had said the words. Clearly she had meant it. That was a buoy to her spirit.

That didn't necessarily mean that she trusted the new High Priestess though.

"...as for the question of aid..." Refocusing on the present, T'rissae paused and considered the suggestion before giving a small shrug. "Perhaps we should have a conversation about what you need before I make an offer."

House Melarn
The Matron mother looks at you and says, "Friend?" Her eyes almost widen and then she looks between the two of you and Arduva makes a simple gesture with her fingers. Zorvalla then nods, "Oh, yes I forgot that your house was more public about such arrangements."

She takes a few moments to wrap her head around it before continuing, "I recently heard the return of your house Dragon. If he could perhaps keep an eye over the entre Western Wall area and maybe provide warning if attackers from outside the city are coming I" She clears her throat and gets into the spirit, "We would greatly appreciate it."

It is something T'rissae expects that her house has already tasked for Dakkon so it is an easy agreement to hold to. Once agreement is made Zovaralla adds, "If you could also ask your Matron Mother to send some diplomats over, we may be able to discuss an even more beneficial arrangement." She looks like she just sucked on something sour but you know as well as she that any 'Diplomat' will assuredly be a spy for Lady Emerald.

Outside House Platin
Shishi seems to almost enjoy the dragon stroking it as Dakkon nods and smiles, "I will keep an eye out for the others. They must have arrived just before I did." He takes a few moments to enjoy petting the celestial before stretching again and inquiring after your names and current house duties. You'll have to dissemble a bit, but he doesn't pry too hard.

Ryo and Kalafein find themselves outside after meeting Magister Vern and they are just in time to see the two other house members talking with the resident Wyrm. Dakkon glances over at the two young men and gives them a 'cheery' smile as they exit and says, "Well, I'll be up on the wall if anyone needs me. Try and avoid the skirmishes to the north." His wings stretch out and he leaps up into the air sailing up and into a recess far up the side of the cave leaving you wondering just what might be happening at the North gates to the city.

Soon enough the entire group gathers back together and begins the trek out of the city. With Dakkon's advice you avoid the skirmishes to the North, and you avoid the western exit due to the Banshee and thus leave through the southern exit if the city.

Leaving one meeting with a powerful entity just to almost literally bump into another - though more terrifying - has Kalafein nearly starstruck. "We truly are blessed." He breathes as they regroup with the others.

Once upon the road, Kal keeps his eyes peeled, hoping to point something out to those not as observant as he.

Thankful for such a resourceful guide in Ryo, Kal handily traverses the Underdark passages and almost continuously makes a running commentary, pointing out interesting rock formations and speculating on the presence of cloakers.

Returning to House Platin and finding the rest of their party assembled, she bid them wait while she went to speak with the leadership of the house as she had promised. Finding both her mother, the High Priestess Silveria, and Lady Emerald, she told them of what had occurred at House Melarn. Both what the new Matron Mother had asked of them, and of what she had long kept to herself concerning her friend, the new High Priestess Arduva.

It was a long conversation.

Returning with the others and speaking what she could about what occurred at House Melarn, T'rissae steeled herself for the journey ahead.

Finally starting out, still bemused by the majesty and power of the House dragon, Burny settles quickly and easily into the rhythm of the journey.

Yao Pu wings in his invisible raven form high and ahead. Others are scouting for the group and he's been in a bit of a snit since the dragon saw through his invisibility and petted him like a simple familiar so he's not really communicative at the moment.

Yrthak Cavern
Kalafein and Bor scout ahead of the group and while Kalafein is able to avoid a group of kobolds Bor is a bit less lucky on his outing and accidentally steps into a black slime but, at least he can tell everyone not to go that way.

The group makes it to the immense Yrthak cavern and sees the trail that others have taken. Pieces of wagons and other groups who have travelled through the cave and not made it all the way through are strewn here and there. Some of the worst carnage is up a carved switchback that leads from the lower cavern to the upper and some of you see goblins hiding in that area. A carved ladder up the wall would be easier for your group though you can't be entirely sure that those goblins won't decide to get to the top and throw things down.

In addition to all of that you count four large rock formations around the cave with various bones strewn about them. You're pretty sure that is where the Yrthak perch.

Bor takes 3 damage from stepping in the Black Ooze.

Ryo'fein was in his element. Exploration, danger around every corner, and the general unknown. To be doing this with some of the House's deadliest residents was exciting. Adventurous.

Now came a first of their crossroads. "This is the place the Magister warned us of. Time to use the scroll?" He asked Kalafein in drow sign.
OOC:
Ryo can take point, or anywhere near the front is fine. The important bit about this place is to follow the Magister's advice and use Silence, and hopefully we make it through without encounter.

Edit: Oh yeah, silly me. Drow sign language should definitely be used.

Kalafein nods in agreement with Ryo'fein. Already wary of sound, he flashes in the drow sign language, I am concerned that an encounter with the goblins ahead will attract the Yrthak. We must avoid them or otherwise ensure they do not attract the Yrthak to us. We will have 10 minutes to cross this span in the magical silence. After that, we risk attracting the Yrthak.
OOC:
I'm assuming I understand the goblins and Yrthak perches to be relatively close to each other for some reason? Otherwise, Kal wouldn't say all that.
OOC:
Yes, if you get involved in combat with goblins that could alert on of the Yrthak.
Oct 16, 2025 11:34 pm
Huddled with the others as Ryo'fein detailed the layout and the (likely) presence of the Yrthak, T'rissae hazards a glance at the desolation that marked the cavern as a place of danger. "Not for the light of heart," she whispered, words that could apply to the entirety of the Underdark.

"We weren't counting on the goblins being here though," she cautioned. "If we use it now, then they'll still be able to see us. And a wandering orb of pure black darkness might as well be a light for all the attention it will pull."

Considering the situation, an idea came to her. One she felt just a little bad about having. "...we could...try to use the goblins as a distraction. Lure them into making a racket, draw the Yrthak's attention."
Oct 16, 2025 11:55 pm
Bor thinks for a moment. He curls his lips under dark blackened beard, nods to T'rissae, looks at his other friends and with stubby dwarven fingers, he signs, I like that plan.

"Would goblins truly dare attack a House with our numbers? I’m surprised they Haven’t scurried away." Ryo’fein signed. "Surely we can simply kill them in silence? I fear they may drag the creature to us unknowingly. But… it makes little difference to me."
Oct 19, 2025 11:57 am
"Likely the wretches are too cowardly to engage us in direct combat", Narcaere muses. But they are clever. Using the Yrthak as attack dogs, then pick the corpses clean afterwards, perhaps?"

"Either way, I have little skill in illusionism as well. I could compel one of them to draw attention, but in this place that is so suicidal an act that they might resist."
Oct 19, 2025 12:23 pm
OOC:
Sorry, but going to need some numbers for distances. How far from us to the goblins, to the Yrthak, from the goblins to the Yrthak, what kind of cover is available as we move, something to help us with our planning a bit.

"How smart are the Yrthak?

Again, I can summon an aberration or a Celestial, attack the Yrthak lair, then retreat it toward the goblin lair. Better to draw the less intelligent toward the more intelligent. Goblins aren't super intelligent but they have a lot of cunning and paranoia. And, they already know about the Yrthak. I'm assuming the Yrthak aren't using the goblins as servants and would attack them if the goblins are exposed.

You are the red, the goblins are the green.

You have enough stealth between you to get close enough to the goblins for an illusion to work.

The Yrthak are more intelligent than the goblins but not in the same class as "true" dragons. They would likely attack something that was a celestial or other interloper without thinking of the area they can't "see".

"You've got a point, Shaojiao," T'rissae admitted. "Perhaps we should approach with stealth and if we are discovered you can summon your celestial as a distraction. For both the goblins and the Ythrak. We can use the scroll to cover our escape. Best of both options, you think?"
Oct 22, 2025 6:52 pm
Bor signs, in reply, Yes, stealth is good. I’m sure we can all manage it, I can make myself invisible.

Ryo'fein nodded, signalling to Kalafein to bubble them in silence.
OOC:
Do we all roll for Stealth?
Oct 24, 2025 2:56 am
You bubble yourselves in silence and approach the area with the goblins hiding about it. The creatures themselves are also being stealthy or, at the very least, they are carefully silent as they loot through a previous caravan that didn’t make it through.

You know you will need to pass them and then head west past another Yrthak nest and then further away through less open tunnels. The far east of the cave is a tower where you’re sure more goblins live, likely only the bravest or stupidest of the goblins come into the areas where these Yrthak can hear.
Stealth Roll by everyone with advantage beats DC 14
You sneak up to the goblins and either quickly kill them or surprise them and they take off running. With them dealt with you are able to continue west through the cave and avoid an encounter with the far deadlier Yrthak.
Someone Fails the stealth roll.
One of the goblins spots you and they all find defensive positions behind remnants of wagons and rocks. One of them sends a light up into the air and you can see goblins coming from the tower. Then one of them comes out and attempts to use Drow sign. "Pig hand speak. You give we go."

At best you think maybe he’s trying to shake you down for some gold. In all honesty though he is just the absolute worst and you practically want to gouge your eyes out before watching him butcher the elegant hand motions of Drow sign even more.
Oct 24, 2025 5:29 am
Were he alone, sneaking by goblins would be little more than child’s play for Ryo’fein, but he’d a host with him.

"I’ve Eilistraee’s guidance, for any who need it." He signaled to the others.

He lowered his piwafi, but took the lead to provide a path that avoided detection for the others.

The Underdark
You barely sneak past the goblins. Burny shows a bit of herself but, by the time that happens, you can make a quick exit to the west. Sure, the goblins in the tower are notified but, you move quickly enough to get away and further into the Underdark.

Here you keep an eye on your maps and an ear out for any sounds while you rest. When you finish resting you write a quick report of your progress. As you are writing the report you see a group of Mindflayers passing through near your encampment. You count five of the creatures along with three Drow who have likely just been taken from Menzoberanzan itself. You can, if you like send a few people who are better at stealth to see just who the Illithids have captured or you can leave them be and continue on for the day.

Ryo'fein was about to skulk and spy upon the mindflayers, but he held himself back. They could read minds, after all. Shadowed or otherwise, he dared not risk it. Better to let the artists ply their trade and spy through the arts.

"What do you see?" He signalled to Burny and Kalafein.
Oct 29, 2025 2:07 pm
Two of the people caught do not light up any remembrance for anyone. One is a male guard of some sort and the other is a low ranked priestess likely a guard captain or designated healer. The third though, he is more than well known to Ryo'fein and Bor as well. Drathir Baenre, a scion of the Baenre clan itself and well known for his cruelty and bullying. If there were anyone in this world that Ryo'fein would like to see being dragged off by Mind Flayers then this man is that person.

It comes down to politics now. Do you leave out seeing him being taken away in your report? Clearly you can't write a falsehood but, you need not detail all information on your day. Besides, it isn't as if Matron Baenre actually cares for him anyway, right? Surely in her book he's likely barely above being a convenient sacrifice at need and the priestess of Lolth will just make things more difficult for you. The guard might be worth saving but certainly not without saving the other two.

You note that you can, if you want, get the drop on the Illithids but can you take all five out from surprise and again is it worthwhile?
Oct 29, 2025 2:55 pm
Burny signs: "Guard type, low rank priestess, noble. Baenre colors."
Oct 29, 2025 6:05 pm
Bor gazes on with obsidian-eyed disdain. No use for those types, he signs back in reluctant reply. Our duergar fellow otherwise remains silently stoic, only signaling his intent to his companions, by raising his trusty warhammer with dwarf-minded confidence!
Oct 30, 2025 12:21 am
"Baenre? Definitely not worth risking our mission over. I don't have much use for most of that house." Silver signs.
Oct 30, 2025 12:25 am
Ryo'fein listened to the report, and moved to see for himself, the risks be damned. He had to be certain.

And there he was, Drathir Baenre. Just the sight of the drow boiled Ryo'fein's blood. He lived with a code, to do good, to uphold Eilistraee and honor her, just as he honored his family and his House. It pained him to see others suffer and injustice, and cruelty was not in his nature.

"That's a Baenre, and one of the worst ones." He signaled, his movements cutting. "My old tormentor, and it pains me to do this, but I beg that we free them. Eilistraee would not allow a drow to suffer at the hands of mindflayers."
OOC:
Someone please just tell him that we have to put our House first, and that this would endanger the mission, and he'll back off.

The sight of drow in the hands of illithid was repulsive, certainly, but it did not stir much empathy in her. If they had been foolish enough to get caught, let the consequences be on their head.

But Ryo'fein's conscience continued to surprise her, and she did owe him. She signs back at him, "If this truly matters to you, I will stand with you, Ryo. But surely our mission must come first. Nothing can matter more to Eilistraee than the completion of our task."

Burny knew (accurately or not) this would be decided by the drow among themselves. No one would want a Yuan-ti's opinion or vote. So, she kept her hands quiet and her head down.

Nonetheless, she thought, it would be a waste of resources and quite probably lives to attempt a rescue. This mission was important.
Nov 1, 2025 11:03 pm
Kalafein absorbs the information and waits for a decision to be made, sure that he knows how this will be decided. Upon hearing Narcaere's response, a memory surfaces that gives him pause.

He mumbles, "Aid all drow who are in distress." He looks to the priestesses, his Aunty and Priestess Silver, as if asking for permission to speak before continuing to address everyone. "Our sisters and mothers taught us the dogma of Eilistraee. Aid all drow who are in distress is part of that directive from the goddess. There is no teaching that I recall pertaining to which drow is worthy of aid." Kal then faces the priestesses. "Of course, I could be mistaken and we have no reason to aid these three drow taken by the illithid. In either case, I respectfully defer to your judgement." The wizard bows and goes silent.

"I normally would agree with you, but risking our mission by trying to save a Baenre seems foolish. Our mission comes first." Silver replied.
Nov 10, 2025 3:09 am
"Fine, the two Priestesses say proceed. The two males say rescue. The dwarf says proceed and I agree with him. Let us move forward and if the Baenres are indeed captives rather than in league with the illlithid, their House bears the responsibility for rescue."

It was not her place to speak but Burny couldn't stand sitting her talking and wasting time. By now, the mindflayers were probably out of range anyway.

Her familiar flying overhead smirked into her head mentally. He had won this round over the shishi.
Nov 11, 2025 1:29 am
Ryo'fein sighed, though he'd be lying if he didn't admit that a part of him was glad the others talked him out of it. Drathir did not deserve kindness.

"Very well. We'll wait for them to clear a safe distance, and then let us move forward."
Nov 11, 2025 2:47 am
Much like the rest of them, T'rissae was at war with herself. She kept her silence for the most part, studying the darkness and weighing her twisting and roiling feelings against what she knew was right.

Baenre. As if grovelling at their feet wasn't enough. Now they must suffer the indignity of playing their faithful servants?? They are twisted, vengeful, corrupt! They'll betray us, stab us in the back and turn our mercy into a weapon! We can't-

"We are who we are in the darkness," T'rissae said quietly, as much to herself as to her companions. "When no one sees us, alone save for the presence of our Lady. Who are we, in those quiet moments? Are we the type who leave the children of Eilistraee in the hands of Illithid? Even those as lost as the Baenre?"

Though he intended to remain silent with eyes cast aside, he wanted to hear his Auntie's words. The cold facade of a typical Drow broke into empathy and near begging at T'rissae's reminder. Burny runs through her summonings in her head and hits upon an Aberration. Intelligent, Immune to psychic damage, probably best to avoid giving psychic damage as well. Using her Gaze of Two Minds from the location the invisible flying Yao Pu, she summons a Grey Slaad just on the far side of the Illithid group and yells for it to attack the nearest Mind Flayer.

OOC:
Question: Can I have my voice come from Yao Pu's location for giving orders to the aberration as well as summoning it using Gaze of Two Minds?

Looked like they were going to ambush the mindflayers after all. Drathir Baenre better be thankful.

Ryo'fein scoffed. No chance of that. But he rushed in anyway, blade and shield in hand, slashing at the nearest mindflayer.

Finding a stalagmite to peek around, Kalafein creates a large hand of shimmering, translucent force before one of the illithid. The drow wizard mentally commands it to grasp and squeeze the mind flayer before ensuring the stagmite blocks him from their direct sight as he hoped rock would protect him from their mental assault.
OOC:
Spellcasting: Bigby's Hand (5th level) - grasping hand
Movement: behind stalagmite, 5 ft to create LoS, 5 ft to have cover. Just in case rock blocks an illithid's mental blast attack.

The Slaad comes in and begins clawing at one of the Mind Flayers. One of those claw attacks makes the creature favor its left leg and, moments later, Bor slams his hammer right into the bleeding wound and the tentacled monster drops to the ground. Bor then sends one last hammer attack directly into the head of the Mind Flayer and it cracks open like a ripe pumpkin.

Ryo'fein drops behind a second of the creatures and one of his blades finds its kidneys making the creature keel over just in time for his second blade to slice through its neck. It drops to the ground bleeding out the last of its life blood.

Kalafein grabs the third Mind Flayer with his magic and the creature is squeezed tight. Its ribs begin to crack under the immense pressure of the magical hand holding it. Not all of your party has gone and already you have downed most of a group of one of the Drow's most dangerous foes.

Not wanting to get into melee range Silver casts Guiding Bolt at 4th level at the nearest flayer.

Guiding Bolt at 4th level - (7d6)

(5255141) = 23

The bolt crashes into the last Mindflayer and guides itself into his heart. He glows lightly for a few moments but, he's dead too. The prisoners all sit there staring blankly at your group. None of them have run likely still affected by the mental geas of the dead mind flayers.

Kalafein scans the illithid corpses for anything magically useful while he speaks to T'rissae, "One would think the recently freed prisoners to shake off their malaise sooner rather than later. Might anytime be done about that?"
Nov 25, 2025 6:37 pm
Burny quickly sends Yao Pu out to scout around while others search the bodies.

She will sit and take a short rest out of sight of the rescued prisoners while everyone deals with the aftermath if that's possible.

Before the last mindflayer hit the ground, Ryo'fein was already rushing towards the prisoners.

"Are there any other threats?" He asked, looking them over and checking to see if they were bound and there were manacles he needed to cut through. "Everyone okay?"
OOC:
Checking to see if anyone responds, or if they continue to stare blankly. Does Ryo know if Lesser Restoration would snap them out of it?

Edit: If it would, he’ll cast it on Drathir.

" If I had Lesser Restoration memorized I could have done something about it. However, I didn't." Silver replied.
Nov 26, 2025 7:39 pm
"I have it with me today," T'rissae says, resheathing her half-naked sword, "but we need to consider its use carefully."

She had elected to join the melee fighters up front, both to ensure their safety and to test out her new weapon. And, belatedly she realized, to further sell the illusion that she, a 'priestess of Llolth,' didn't have reliable access to spellcraft. An illusion that both she and Silver would need to maintain. Giving both Silver and Ryo'fein, both divine casters themselves, a knowing glance, she delicately and subtly rubbed a fake icon of Llolth as if to say, 'it's time to play a part.'

"First let's see what we're working with." Going to the prisoners once it was considered safe, she began assessing them, determining not just the nature of whatever shackles the illithid had placed around their minds but also how aware they were of their surroundings within that state. It was vitally important to know whether or not these captives could see, hear, understand, and remember. If they could, then she and her companions would have to be very careful with what they said in the next few minutes. One slip up and word would inevitably get back to the Baenre's...or they would have to perform a grisly and cold-blooded murder of their fellow drow.

These souls may be deserving of Ellistraee's compassion, but that was not the same thing as trust.
OOC:
Apologies for disappearing, I went on vacation and had something of an online detox. Thus, I am a tad behind lol

The female Drow shakes off her mental domination first. She stands slowly and then immediately notices the women of your house. She bows and speaks softly, "I am Imrae of House Inthuul. Guard captain of the Northern Gate. I am indebted to House Platin today…" She may not like it but, as a priestess of Lolth she respects your power over her. You also immediately notice that her house is of the low nobility so low that you likely can’t recall just how far down they are.

Drathir wakes next and stares aghast at just who he has been rescued by. He stares daggers at Ryo’fein but, without any women from his house, he is outranked by even the guard captain. He begrudgingly bows as well, "I too am in your debt." You doubt his words even as he speaks them but, later when you write to his Matron Mother you can include that debt. She will ensure he repays.

The last of the prisoners doesn’t even speak. He bows low and then immediately notices captain stares at him. She says, "That is Private Durse of no family. I will ensure these two get to Menzoberanzan as safely as possible."

She gets closer to your group. "Any commands before I go bring these two back?" She clearly wants to absolve the debt she owes and, as a member of a much lower house, is probably hoping for some way to get an in with House Platin.
OOC:
History DC 16: House Imrae is the 55th house. In comparison to your rank they may as well be commoners.
