"Oh, it is!" The receptionist replies, her smile looks a lot more plastic now that she has looked you up, it is likely she, now, knows who you are, and she does not seem to approve.

Your approach is going to be much harder than you might have hoped. It was always going to be hard, they are not covered by the NHS (National Health Service) and their prices are reputedly astronomical, but you may have to offer them something really special to overcome their prejudices.

"Is there anything else?" The receptionist asks by way of dismissal.

The older man in the waiting room has been watching. You can't know this, but you are the second person he has seen get rejected and he is ever so slightly curious why his daughter-in-law was so easily accepted on such short notice.

Her excitement dimmed a little once she learned 'Dr' Moss was not only not a Fae, but that he hadn't ever seen one either. He said he 'studied' them, but for all she knew, his knowledge wasn't any better than her own.

She was still curious to learn how he gained the ability to heal. If it was some inborn talent, or something anyone could learn - maybe even her. But she didn't ask him about it just yet. She wanted to see how good his 'healing' really was first. He could be nothing more than a quack for all she knew, preying on her desperation. After all, she was in a state to believe almost anything.

Leaning back in her chair, she allowed him to work in peace, taking the time to look around the room and pick up any odd little details while she waited.

Max doesn't respond at first, except to offer a quick, lifeless smile in exchange for the plastic one of the receptionist. She simply says nothing and lets the exchange grow ever more awkward. When she speaks, her rather nondescript inflection has become something rougher and lower-class. She leans forward, meeting the receptionist's eyes. "Yeah, there is somethin' else. Because you're on Max's turf, and I'm fuckin' Max. So, you can see immediately how there might be a problem if I don't like the way you do business. Fetch your boss sweet cheeks. I need to have a nice, civil conversation with them about their future in this location and it might be above your pay grade." With that she leans back again, as if feigning disinterest in the woman across the counter.

Time slips by, the room is peaceful and undemanding, and it is easy to relax and let your worries fade away. If you let your attention drift from the here and now, you might start to hear the background sounds of nature, the birds and the frogs and the rain soothing all your cares.

What 'odd little detail' do you pick up on? Be it in the room, or merely in the background sounds, or nothing at all.

After what feels like no time at all, but will turn out to have been hours —as promised— Dr Moss takes his hands off your thigh, looking away from you face and trying to ignore all but the 'wound area'. "Fantastic!" He says in appreciation. "I knew you were a good candidate." There is a little hint of joy in his voice that suggests he, maybe, was not quite as confident as he is making out to be in his 'knowing' that it would work, but that is well hidden behind his enthusiasm for the result.

You saw the wound yesterday, while in the hospital, so it may be with some trepidation that you look down at your ruined flesh again. But there is no sign that there ever was an injury there, your leg is, once more, perfect.

The receptionist's eyes narrow a little and she looks nervous, confirming that they know of you. "Look, we don't want any trouble." She says. "The doctor is with a patient and can not be disturbed. What exactly is it you want?" She does not really believe the 'appointment' story you came in with.

The older gentleman in the waiting room looks away, uncomfortable with the language and the threats. He raises his book as a shield, pretending he is not there.

"Then I guess it's your lucky day," says Max, enunciating 'lucky' with the bite of sarcasm, "Because all the sudden it's your pay grade after all." She smiles not unkindly at the receptionist. "All I want is to sit down and have a good, productive conversation about how this establishment might better integrate with the community it's found itself in. We'll have to talk somewhere private."

She suddenly lands her eyes on the old man hiding behind his book. "Hey Grandpa," she addresses him. "Anyone comes in, be a dear and tell 'em it'll be a minute before the receptionist comes back."

Then she steps around the counter as though she owns the place. "An office would be lovely. What's your name then? I ain't gonna call you sweet cheeks again."

'Grandpa' looks scandalised and a little intimidated, he swallows and looks to the receptionist pleadingly.

"Sorry, Charles." She says. "Um... just give us a shout if anyone needs me out here. Do you want another cup of tea?" She asks as she follows you to the back, you don't see his response.

"Uh... B...Blossom." She introduces herself, directing you towards the kitchenette and away from the closed door that possibly leads to 'the surgery'. "Do... do you want tea?" She offers looking at the kettle for comfort.

This was all very odd. She could hear the frogs again, together with the soft patter of rain. The ripple of water, a faint singing voice carried over the wind. It was faint, likely in a language she couldn't understand, but she couldn’t hold onto it; the moment she tried to focus, it all slipped away, leaving her uncertain if she had been imagining it all

She spent the next couple of hours floating in the hazy borderland, neither fully asleep of fully awake, until Dr. Moss finally drew his hands away, and she blinked herself back into the room, suddenly aware of the absence of his touch. She looked down, with some hesitation, at her thigh, bracing herself to look upon her rendered flesh - but there was nothing.

The skin was flawless, smooth as if she had never been hurt at all. No scar, no discoloration, no trace that there had ever been a wound. Holding her breath, and still not quite sure that she wasn't dreaming, she touched the spot with her fingers, half-expecting it to be some kind of an illusion. But there was no flare-up of pain. Only her own, perfect skin.

"How… how is this possible?"

"The faeries offer many gifts." Moss says with a satisfied hint of 'I told you so'. He reaches behind himself for a chair and drops into it, looking exhausted.

"If we would but open ourselves to them." He finishes his thought.

"This is… incredible," she kept staring at her thigh, her fingers caressing her smooth skin. She just couldn't believe her own eyes. "And you’re saying the faeries could give anyone these kinds of gifts?"
Sep 6, 2025 5:51 pm
Max waves away the tea politely. "Thanks Blossom, but I prefer the hard stuff."

She moves around the room as if giving it a brief inspection, then leans casually against the kitchenette counter. "Here's your deal. Everything from Angel Street to Falcon Square is under my protection. I don't run an extortion racket, and I don't force civilians into crime. In most respects, I let people conduct their business as they see fit. But community is important to me. And refusing service to an individual such as myself doesn't really seem like a healthy community."

"So, one of two things is going to happen. Either you're going to follow my rules, which I will explain to you and you will find reasonable. And once I'm finished explaining them to you, we're going to return to your desk and book me an appointment as soon as the doctor's schedule opens up. Or you're going to be gone by tomorrow. We clear?"

"No. Not just anyone." Moss says. "Not everyone is receptive enough to receive their gifts. Too many are too closed off, out of touch with ... 'nature'." He waves his hand vaguely, not quite settled on the word 'nature' but too tired to find a better fit.

"And it takes work. Work most —even most of the 'receptive'— are probably not willing to put in." He says sadly.

"But you know how it is." Moss adds. "The lengths one need to go to be one's best." He indicates you and your body, the way you look, acknowledging the effort involved.

Blossom looks a bit scornful when you disclaim an extortion racket, that is exactly what it sounds like. But she does not argue your 'right' to 'protect' your Territory, she is obviously cowed.

"And, how will you be paying for this?" She asks, turning back to business as her own protection. You have heard that their bills are astronomical. "We don't work for free." This last statement has a little venom to it, you get the impression is it non-negotiable.

"Of course not," agrees Max wholeheartedly. "You're not running a charity, I understand. Though in time you may come to appreciate my stewardship enough to offer me a discount. Many people here do. But it's by no means required. Now, if this place is running above the board, I'll eat my fuckin' arm. So, what you're going to do is give me a list of everything your clinic will need in the near future along with my bill. I'll sell it all to you at market value, and I will be your primary supplier in the future. That's one of the rules, you don't do your business behind my back. If you need any help extricating yourself from your current business relationships, I can of course offer my services." She winks. "At a discount." As far as she's concerned, she's being perfectly reasonable and has had this conversation with other 'legitimate' businesses.

"Beyond that, most important thing is that you respect this community and everyone in it. Which means you don't turn away anyone from this community. You can still charge them an arm and an asshole, not a charity, we've established that."

Emma listened in silence, still looking at her smooth skin. It was as if nothing had ever happened. She wasn't sure she fit his idea of being 'attuned to nature', and even less sure that she had either the patience or the discipline for whatever 'work' he meant. The thought of being able to mend herself, and never again face the terror of a ruined body was tempting, but then again - wasn't it enough to know that there were others who could do this? She could always turn to Dr. Moss again if she was ever desperate - though she had no intention to.

She was coming home to David now, and leaving all this craziness behind her.

Finally looking up at him, she studied his face for a moment before asking the question that has been bugging her:

"So why me, then? Why are you helping me?" she paused, and then added: "And who is Titania?"

Persephone listens to Benji's side of the conversation. When the conversation finally returns to her mark -- and she isn't sure it is even a tattoo using ink at all, but some magical ward, perhaps, like those that covered Wentworth's walls -- she walks over to Benji and crosses her arms, waiting. She looks at him with an expression that suggests she awaits an answer. Not impatient, exactly, which suggests irritation, but simply someone who thinks their time is very valuable and could be better spent doing other things than waiting for frog talk to conclude.

"You... you want complete control over everything we buy? The teabags?" She indicates the box she is still holding. "And the surgical supplies, medicines, and ... toilet paper? And we don't get a say in who we treat, we have to take every patient, even if they are not something we can heal?" She sounds incredulous, but also too afraid of you to argue with you... to your face.

"And what exactly is it you want done? The nose? Of course." She says, possibly just trying to be mean and attack your insecurities out of spite. "What else?" She looks you up and down, judging every inch of you, and clearly finding you a lot less 'fabulous' now that she has met you.

"Why, you are..." Moss says when you ask about who Titania is. He watches your expression for any reaction to this statement.

"... And I am, and Blossom is. We are all: Titanias" Which might explain the lack of apostrophe in the name.

"I am??" she furrowed her eyebrows at him "Is that a reference for the Faerie queen, or, what exactly are we talking about here?"
Sep 6, 2025 8:24 pm
Max stares back at Blossom, just as incredulous. "Are you being serious with me right now? I ain't a grocery store and I ain't gonna sell you fuckin' toilet paper. No I'm talkin' about the stuff you can't get legally. And yes, you can still turn away people you can't treat. What I'm talkin' about is turnin' people away because of who they are, like you just did to me. If they live here, of course."

Then she pulls her jacket back a bit and pulls up her T-shirt, revealing puncture marks surrounding a hideous bite scar. "My nose happens to be beautiful. This is what I want taken care of. How much is it gonna cost me anyway?"

OOC: Changed wound to scar, since that's more accurate.
