Chapter 4: Trip the Light Fantastic

OOC:
Yes, you rested so at full resources.
The animated corpse shambles through the deep water towards the strange swimming hill. Ompha sits back on his haunches and shudders. "That's not natural," the bear murmurs.

When the corpse gets within a yard of the hillock, what looked at first to be another island in the muck rises up out of the water on six spindly, thorny legs! Tentacles unfurl from its sides and a toothy maw opens wide!
OOC:
Anybody who wants to act first may take the initiative and do so! The swamp is challenging terrain, so for each yard you would move across it, you must spend 1 extra yard of movement.

"Corpses generally do not move again, no." R3N-L3 intoned conversationally, even as he unsheathed his blade, glowing in a solid corona of flickering grey light, and began to wade into the swamp with shield at the ready......And wade....And wade....And wade.....He didn't seem to be getting very far at all.
OOC:
With R3N-L3's abysmal speed, he only goes 1 yard in the swamp per turn xP
Oct 24, 2025 12:35 pm
Tzal sighed as he looked at the tentacles and maw, "Hmm, I thought as much. The hillock is a creature dwelling in the swamp. Looks like we will have to take care of it. As for the corpse, it has got nothing to do with it. I have infused an alchemical humor inside it, which is using the corpse as a medium like a fulcrum to attach with. I call it animus humor, and it doesn't need a corpse; it can work on a nonliving object also. I used the corpse, hoping that it will attract the swamp creature."

Tzal then pointed at the swamp creature and sent a flying jellyfish towards it. He then started to slowly wade back from the creature.
OOC:
Going on slow turn.

Lauretta kept a healthy distance from the murky depths as the group arrived at the sinkhole Ompha described. The frown on her face deepened with dissatisfaction. Trudging through swamps was never a good idea, less so when they were in a faerie realm and filled with dead. Her words stayed to herself to allow Tzal to spearhead the problem. However, moments later the Preceptor took several heavy steps towards the magician, glaring at him. There was much difficulty in not launching a sudden and intense inquisition into the raising of the dead, but her shoulders lowered slightly in response to Tzal's explanation.

"Of course it's a monster." Lauretta groaned, reaching for her bow.
OOC:
No initiative here.
Oct 26, 2025 2:33 am
Wolfram draws his bow and nocks an arrow, but waits.
OOC:
Not taking initiative.
Oct 27, 2025 2:14 pm
The monstrosity scuttles forward through the muck, stopping 5 yards away from R3N-L3 and lashing out with a long tentacle! It barely leaves a scratch on the clockwork, but it wraps around him and yanks him right next to the beast and its snapping jaws! Fortunately, R3N-L3 is able to keep its much more dangerous teeth from tearing him apart!
OOC:
1 damage to R3N-L3 and he is pulled 5 yards and is now adjacent to the creature, which is 6 yards away from the shore. Everybody but R3N-L3 may now act on the slow initiative.

Rolls

Tentacle - (d20+5+d6)

(13) + (3) + 5 = 21

Damage - (d6)

(1) = 1

Snapping Jaws - (d20+5)

(7) + 5 = 12

Lauretta's hands move much more swiftly as the scraping sound of teeth on metal tore through the air. Trudging into the treacherous waters, the bowstring creaked under her might. An arrow jolted through the air. The priestess's lips uttered a prayer all the while.
OOC:
Action to attack. Lauretta's reaction will be used for 1 of 2 options, depending on whether or not it was a success. If her attack failed, she will use her reaction to activate Battle Blessing. The aura will give her and her allies a boon on any attacks with weapons they make. If her attack was a success, then she will use her reaction to activate her Prayer talent for whatever spell Tzal casts.

Did the monster attack take into account the bane from R3N-L3's Spellfighter weapon? Also, I find it absolutely hilarious that the monster helped R3N-L3 out immensely, because he wouldn't be able to get to it in a million years otherwise XD

I'd like to wait to see if Wolfram gets a boon from Lauretta...and maybe Tzal's jellyfish sunk the monster. :-)

Lauretta's arrow manages to find its mark, but striking the creature causes it to release a choking cloud of spores around it! With Lauretta's prayer, Tzal's jellyfish slams into the strange bog beast, holding it fast and poisoning it.
OOC:
I didn't include the bane for R3N-L3's Spellfighter weapon. He can choose not to be hit instead, but as you said, it works out in his favor to get hit in this case!

The monster has a Defense of 9 so Lauretta hits. The spore cloud fills the air within 10 yards with light obscurement for 1 minute. Lauretta can use her prayer to give Tzal a boon on his attack to cancel the bane and still allow him to critically hit.

@Windyridge is up. No boon from Lauretta since she used it for Tzal, and the bane from light obscurement is canceled out by the boon from poisoned, so Wolfram rolls as normal for his attack.

Seeing the scene play out before him, Wolfram raises his bow and shoots at the monster, despite the spores making his target cloudy. After all, he had been studying the creature and knew its position. His arrow erupted in a bright yellow-orange flame as it hissed through the air.
OOC:
Flame Kiss Arrow in play, and Combat Opportunist might come into play on a success.

OOC:
R3N-L3 will accept the blow, since he's not miserly enough to care about 1 damage as a tank!
"This lifeform is clearly operating on an inferior cogitator unit." R3N-L3 noted dispassionately, sparks flying off his armor as the teeth glanced harmlessly off of the warform. Drawing back his blade, R3N-L3 struck with a calculated blow directly into the hillock, using his patented hillock-killing-optimization program.
OOC:
If that hits, it's 15 damage! If it crits, it's 22!

Flame Kiss is a talent for the Inheritor's relic weapon, which is the dagger. Also, Combat Opportunist is a level 5 Rogue talent. We are currently level 4. Lastly, your bow's attack should do 4d6 damage. 2d6 from the weapon, 1d6 from Trickery, and 1d6 from your Bonus Damage pool. @Windyridge

Oh that's right! I forgot. Let's see how the GM wants me to fix that. Not sure why I added CO.

Wolfram shoots the hulking bog beast while R3N-L3 slashes it with his sword. Still, the massive beast is still standing, but Tzal's jellyfish continues to hold it in place!
