Winner, though I always remember it from "Sliding Doors" :)
You move forwards and see the stone blocks used to create the doorwar have deeply carved runes along each. Alden is able to read them, with a bit of uncertainty, to

The war was waged in silence, not won.
Beneath this door, the hunger stirs.
Turn away, lest you feed it once more.

A check by both Alden and Cass reveals that both magic and spirit energies are tied to the mound, and doorway and even more can be felt deeper within.

A steep stone ramp descends into the mound and Karesohn lead you down to a cavern about 40'wide x 60'long and 20' tall. The central floor of this chamber is covered in a tile labyrinth. Two passages lead to off from the far end, one to the left another to the right.

Karesohn
To the left is a dead-end of little interest as far as I know. There are more to the right, but I have only entered the next chamber. There are more beyond, but I will not go with you should you continue.

Cass recites a rhyme she heard children singing back in the village.
"Deep in the hollow, past root and stone,
A door stands waiting, alone, alone.
Knock three times and whisper true,
But never step beyond, or it takes you too."

She adds, I wonder if this is that door?

Karesohn
Shrugging he comments If it is then the rhyme is wrong. I and dozens of others have dared each other beyond this point in out youth. I did see another stone doorway like this down in the caverns to the right. But I dared not descend to the next level.

Cass shrugs as well and says, "Who knows? Maybe it refers to a door deeper within, or somewhere else entirely. Or maybe it is nonsense."

John looks at the runes on the doorway, interested but shrugs his shoulders as they descend into the dark. Upon reaching the crossroads he peers down each with his lantern as he listens to Cass and their guide speak. He’s gets a familiar feeling to the other ruins he had braved.

"That sounds like a warning to me. I would guess spirits from ages past lie in these ruins. If the ruins I went through are related at all. I freed the spirits there, maybe we can do the same here."

John shrugs as he says what little he knows, just from his experiences days before. Returning to the dead end passage, he holds the lantern out.

"I’d like to check out this dead end just in case, you never know."
OOC:
I’d like to check out this dead end. I have a shovel and pickaxe so if it looks like I can dig around a bit I’d like to do that.

"Sure, let’s check the dead end first."

When they get there, Alden will inspect it for traps, magic, and hidden doors or items.

The short passage to the left opens to a smaller cavern (30x20) that is all rough, natural, rock. Karesohn mentions that this is typically where those that are dared to enter will go and mark the walls as proof. Indeed you see many small name glyphs etched into the stone of this room. A search reveals nothing of interest and all the stones look, feel, and sound solid.

https://i.imgur.com/14I7hHd.png The other passage opens into a cavern that splits left and right (wide v shape with 20-40 wide branching caverns). The lantern light reveals more dirty and damp rough stone. The damp stones glisten in the flickering lantern light but a glint of something metallic else catches your eye to the right (right down). A soft but cool air current comes from the passage to the left (right up).

Disappointed after inspecting the dead end John looks down the two new paths. He sees the light from his lantern catch on a metallic object. He makes sure everyone’s together, then slowly moves down the right passage to see what the object is.

"I see something in the light."

Cass follows behind, her perceptive eyes scanning for danger.
Feb 22, 2025 2:57 pm
John finds a small amulet of bronze among the rocks of the cave. As he bends to inspect is he sees some faint scratches on the wall nearby depicting two figures, one wreathed in fire, another draped in mist. The carvings details stop at their waist though vague outlines show hints of them below. A few simple words of the common language show "Two stood, neither submits. Fires of home. Tears of loss. Neither gives, the valley weeps and burns in silence forever."
Feb 22, 2025 8:50 pm
Cass follows and studies the markings. She says, "I had heard that two mighty powers had clashed here long ago and wrought great destruction. These must be a depiction of that. Hmm, I wonder if we might learn more further in?"
Feb 22, 2025 9:03 pm
John inspects the amulet for any design or markings of significance before putting it in a pouch. He listens to Cass as he ponders the carvings on the wall, turning to her when she finishes speaking.
"Thats amazing that you know some of the history of this place, be it tall tales or reality."
He chuckles as he looks back at the carving, as if something will reveal itself if he looks long enough.
"Well I guess we can continue down this path?"

Des grips his bow tighter.

If Des sees any movement or anything unusual approaching from the rear he will toss the lantern, call out to the group, and draw his bow prepared to fire. He is ignoring all details of the tunnels, instead focusing on keeping the party safe. He seems content to let the others analyze the details.

With nothing else of interest you move back where you entered this section then proceed to the other unexplored sections of the tunnel. Your "guide" stays back at the passage to the first cavern watching you quietly.

As you move into the other caves you note that the humidity is increasing and sections of walls, floor, and ceiling are all extremly wet and there are muddy puddles with small pools of water. However, there are small pieces of stone that jut out from the moisture and sparkle with reflected lantern light. About 60 feet from the passage back to the first cavern the room you are in turns to the left and you leave the line of sight of your guide. Further ahead of you can be seen a narrow passage that continues down further into the earth and splitting off from this is a larger cavern.

Entry and 1st cavern #2, amulet #3, muddy cavern #1
unexplored below the passage that leads down / off screen to the right

As you move to look down the passageway and into the cavern to the right of it you hear a strange sucking sound and Des instantly spots a mound of mud growling larger as it slides towards you all.

As Des was on guard he can do 2 full actions, all the others get 1 action before contact with the muddy whatever

Case takes the turn to summon a fire spirit, hoping to burn away the muck protecting this creature.

As she calls to the spirit, which involves her singing a song of wild nature, she slowly steps backward from the moving mud.

John eyes the mud mound as Des brings their attention to the thing. Drawing his blade he swings it in one motion to strike it against the cave wall, causing sparks to ignite into flame along the blade.

"Stay behind me."

John stands in front of the thing, ready to react or recieve a blow. Not knowing what the thing will do.

OOC:
Okay, if I'm reading my sheet right, I automatically get focus with my bow (mastery), and with Marksman I succeed with focus on a 3 or higher. So for my first action, I will fire. For my second, I will draw another arrow.
Des tosses the lantern at the shambling mound, pulls the drawstring on his bow—breathes—fires the arrow.

He moved behind John, and quickly grabs an arrow preparing another shot.
