Session 0 and character creation
Be sure to read and follow the community guidelines.
First of all please take a look at my tutorial tread by this link.
Then say hi here and roll your character ability scores.
Character creation
For your convenience - copy of
Using PHB 2024
Starting equipment for LVL 1 character (could allow extra equipment worth up to 100 gp, but I want your PC motivated my promise of a coin)
Ability scores: rolled (i.e. 4d6h3) and if you don't like your roll could o standard array instead
1. Roll your ability scores
2. Decide and post here your decision if you stay with rolled or fall back to standard array (anyone need standard array explained/defined?)
After choosing your class you can roll your HP, but I don't recommend that.
HP at level 2 and 3 as per PHB: you can either use average or you can roll - your choice, but there is no reroll or fallback, so I recommend taking average (rounded up per rules).
Your character sheet and your responsibilities
I allow either custom or 5e charactersheet and all I need to see on you character sheet are actually only these:
- Your AC
- Your current HP
- Your passive perception (or just perception modifier)

What else you should know?
Let me try to remember, so
- I play RAW, when rules ask DM to decide or unclear, I try to make it how is better for party/players
- Only exception may be Initiative order as we will probably run some combats in "side mode" to be explained later, but seasoned gamerspane players would know what that is
- Probably something more i forgot and add later

I'll put his form in a Google Doc, and then fill in the most important ones in the GP character form.
Here's a link to his form on Google Docs:

This Guide maybe help with that.
Anyway, i looked at your stats, that must be a typo! You type 4d6😅 not 4d6h3😅
Even with that your stats is:
11, 15, 9, 11, 17, 14
Which this is too much Odd Numbers😅
ETA: Ignore the dice roll. I don't know how to remove it.
Rolls

(1161) = 9
Also feel free to test dice rolling in this thread
ETA: Okay, done.
Do you have PC done but just can't put it into gamersplane charactersheet?
Or do you struggle to build character using a particular tool?
Or else?
The AC I have listed on the sheet is my base AC without Mage Armor, but I'm planning on having Mage Armor up essentially all the time.
@MrSaxon @MacConnell please follow this link to my little tutorial where I can help you with your charactersheet and share my as gamersplane player experience using them.
The AC I have listed on the sheet is my base AC without Mage Armor, but I'm planning on having Mage Armor up essentially all the time.
Thanks for pointing me that I missed to react.
1. I guess Fang Featherwhite has wrong AC, should be 16 not 15 (now as your wisdom increased), but otherwise good enough for me to start game, player could finalize PC later
2. Garran Veyr, Krynt Keppler, Atticus Harrow looks good, you could also finalize anything if you want
3. Ocelot - @MacConnell your PC still missing avatar image, and more details, please let me know if you would like me to delay game start and give you more time to work on your character details
Meanwhile let's talk the important
Session 0 topics
1. I encourage you to write anything that's on your mind, but please choose what message belong to which of the threads. Do split you message among different channels if that makes sense. The main reason is to keep game thread as focused on game story as osible, becuase both me and you may want to scroll through that thread and recall what happened earlier
2. Outside of combat I will be waiting for everyone to post between two of my in game posts. Please don't be shy and don't expect one or two PCs to lead. Every post will include a either a challenge (issue/struggle) or opportunity (opportunity to learn lore, find loot, etc.). Here on PbP I will only allow each PC will have a single attempt at doing things, so be wise try to attempt something others did not.
3. Skill checks. Or the proper name per rules are "Ability Checks". At the table DM calls for ability checks, but here in gamersplane it is common practice for players to try to guess which skill DM will require to roll and post that as part of your post. Let's do that in this game - when you do out of combat post (see 2 above) feel free to add a skill check roll if you think you describe action that is not mundane.
4. Advantage, Disadvantage and Help outside combat
First of all - you don't need announce help outside combat, please focus on your own actions instead. I assume you are helping each other out of combat by default - whenever it is posible.
This is something I'm going to invent a new in this game. I would like to ask you - every time you roll a skill check add your second roll, because I may as DM decide you are doing that ability check with advantage or disadvantage. If there is another PC in the party proficient in the skill and I could think of a logical way to help you - you will get advantage. If I think your background give you advantage - I will give you advantage. If however there are lore/environment or other impediments to your success you may or may not be aware of - I may decide to choose the worst of your rolls. Fingers crossed this will not happen, but who knows
5. Be and bold. Be creative. Improvise. And invent environment objects!
We are telling an adventuring story, not a reality show :). Do "wall run", walk glowing coals, jump from one build root to another...
More over we are telling this story together. Don't ask me "are there tree tall enough to..." or "are there anything written on these doors"
Do tell me your character is climbing a tree that happen to be there or read the warning on the doors and add a skill check - if you roll badly - that warning was written as a joke.
I will remind you of that in the game
Posting rate and when we start?
Once I feel like we are all ready to start game I will create a game thread and do my first narrative about party travel. Most probably end of this week. And it will include the first challenge already.
Starting there I will be waiting for everyone to post their PC actions before I will do narrative of those actions and post next challenge.
P.S. I would love to see your character visual description as part of your first in game post, or if you are eager to you can post it here in this thread already.
Questions?
Anyone have any questions ? Any. Please don't hesitate. We have time to discuss
- Where do we post our backstory and details? Or keep it as secrets (for now)?
- About Combat; do we move in grid battle map? Or Theater-In-Mind?
- How initiative work for this game? In-group? Or each pc roll initiative?
Sorry if poor grammar :)
Combat and initiative - we will vote when get there, but grid is my preference and I would like to run initiative RAW, but to speed up I am considering using this rule
1. You go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder and use premade option (or quick build)
2. You pick the druid I just created as premade just change name if you want - click the link to download charactersheet
3. You go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder use quick build and ask any questions you get in the process
4. You just give up and leave the game
I can open your premade druid, but I do not know how to download it. I can try to manually copy the information to my character record.
Sad to hear. Making a character for D&D can be time-consuming. That's why I chose to create my character using AI - took me a few minutes. If you want, I can help you create a druid using AI?
Now for building your own character I am also confused. Do you see this?

You will need to do exactly that
Also - when you choose background do you see this? There is no Folk Hero, not supposed to be.
Folk Hero background is not officially printed in the 2024 Player's Handbook. You are doing a 5.0 character instead of 5.5 and I just don't know how you manage to do that
If there is - please tell me how you get that

If you are creating your character based on basic rules there will be only 4 Backgrounds available to you.
(Edit a tiny little bit change on my character sheet🤏)
Now that's my reference, But if you wish otherwise - feel free to use this thread to do whatever you wish. Talk your talking. Share how you were traveling to other planes of existence, stealing gold from dragons, doing quests for leach kings. :-) But keep it out of our game story
OK?!
So I've unlocked game thread and my plan at least for first week is following:
- I will be waiting for your posts in game thread till Sunday morning in EU and will make next post sometime Sunday
- I will then wait and do my next posts Tuesday and Thursday evening EU time.
- That's the 3 per week which was minimum I announced in recruitment. We will see how/if we can speed up after we have played one week
- If you want ask clarification question or any other feedback from me sooner than these scheduled posts - use OOC thread, I will try to always answer within 8 hours in OOC.
- Set your character avatar (Change Avatar->Upload picture->save
- Decide what sells your character have prepared this morning and list them on charactersheet.
That's about all for now - everything else could be done during next week

oh I see you posted already... that's fine - once I approve you character either me or you can edit your post to make in in character. I still do insist you do your "homework" let me know if you need any assistance as spells preparing may be strange.
You have
- Two spells as Circle of the Land Spells - (you need to choose one type of land: arid, polar, temperate, or tropical.)
- Longstrider for Wood Elf
- 6 spells of your choice from druid spells available in PHB
I have an opinion on this one and quite detailed - you could read my opinion below , but could just ask me each time in game - can I roll this again
My detailed opinion - it depends!
There are different skill checks and different situations. If you try to climb a tree fail skill check, fall, take falling damage and then want to try again - I will welcome that and even reduce DC by 1 each time as you learn from your past mistakes.
If you do an investigation check or survival check and dice decides you fail - I will not narrate failure happen due to inability of a particular character. I will narrate that the situation/environment is unfavorable. I can't narrate environment suddenly changes when you or another PC rolls better number.
For example: when PC with +8 in survival rolls 1 on D20 scoring 9 to discover footprints of an animal I will not narrate this particular PC simply don't know how to do survival I will narrate it was either the heavy rain for footprints in dirt or a strong wind for footprints in the sands to disappear. And that is the reason I will ignore repeated skill checks you make for the same reason.
Positive example: PC makes a history check trying to remember something. Now I could narrate failure is because he was ill when topic were discussed at school, he didn't have the book to read or something. I will not allow the same PC to roll again, but will allow another PC to roll for the same goal.
Choosing a species and certain features of the Druid class granted various spells. Are all of these spells plus the ones that I am suppose to choose only the ones that are known or are they all memorized?
If only known, are the memorized number of spells limited by the number on the Druid data table plus the Wisdom bonus?

In your case, Elf gives you a feature that says:
As for your druid features, I'm not sure what you took, but I guess you're referring to the Circle spells. That feature also tells you:
Whenever you finish a Long Rest, choose one type of land: arid, polar, temperate, or tropical. Consult the table below that corresponds to the chosen type; you have the spells listed for your Druid level and lower prepared.
Note that at 3rd level, we full spellcasters get access to 2nd level spell slots; you have 2 of those, plus 4 1st level ones. Just because you have 2 2nd level slots, that does not mean that 2 of your prepared spells must be 2nd level spells. You are free to choose 6 spells of either 1st or 2nd level in any combination. Most 1st level spells can be upcast, so your 2nd level slots would not be totally wasted. You could even prepare 6 2nd level spells, but you would only be able to cast 2 of them, or 1 of them twice.
I hope this helps; I get that it's a lot to take in, but we're here to help.
Just let me update - You have Magic Initiate from sage background indeed.
Read it here
Yes spell casters are always complicated to handle no matter which system. Though 5.5 add more compared to 5.0 and more means more to learn.
I strongly suggest creating your dndbeyond account or finding alternative tool to handle that complexity for you.
- I will ignore any of your Stealth checks you are rolling without knowing whom you are hiding from. Or I will narrate you hide from your own party.
- We roll perception checks to spot something that has been hidden on purpose of being hidden. This skill reflect your subconscious ability of your mind to pick up something that does not look natural something odd, something suspicious - even if you cant logically explain why it looks suspicious. Perception does not measure how far you can see
- I prefer Investigation rolled when your PC has gathered lot of information or have means to gather that information, but we don't want player to analyze that information - we want to see how PC does that analysis
My rule of thumb for picking the right skill is:
1. You decide if you want your PC to rely on instinct/subconscious mind and make decision logically not being able to explain that decision. i.e. your PC would say "we need to go that direction because I believe so" Or do you want your PC to make conscious decision based on observation, i.e. "I see a high tree over there, we can climb it and see further"
Do you follow? This will be Wisdom Ability Check in first instance and Intelligence Ability Check in the second
2. Can you see any of your skills you are proficient in to contribute to your success? It don't necessarily need to be skill usually associated with the ability, let's take crazy example - you are proficient in athletics (which is used in climbing) and you apply that to an Intelligence ability check trying to guess which way enemy could have climbed the mountain
Example
In this case, following your interpretation of Perception, I would like to put forward an argument to use Investigation instead of Nature. But of course, we go with what you think is best.
Do you realize that in an absence of enemy i am unable to narrate this skill?
But if hear one more player objection I will recall the above statement. Even if player roll stealth+perception with literally every post they make.

@PbPgameOn welcome. If you can have at least draft PC charactersheet ready by Tuesday/Wednesday I would like to pull you into the game after my next in game post, but please take your time
Regarding my previous post - I was a bit too dramatic on the weekend, instead of "I will ignore any " I should have said "I may" and I encourage everyone to be creative with what ability checks you are rolling, I will try to award you with advantage for creativity
For reference, my character is Ranger, while olof is fighter, idk about other…

Bro look like Human guy with Wife & 2 kids 😂🤣
Joke aside, Being paladin is perfect to! Paladin is use Cha as spellcasting, and can heal, + being frontliner. This is actually good ngl👍
Edit: your dnd beyond link i think is invalid, can you tried again?
Maybe this link will work: Bartholomew
Actually, please edit your AC to be "18 (20)" for me to not forget how it change when you case shield of faith, thanks
I suggest to take time to read setting and my first game post. I would invite you to post after my next in game post, but if you feel like ready and willing to - feel free to post already, assuming your PC has been with the party all of this time, we just never mentioned him in the story yet
| Name | Who | Background | Nature | Notes |
| Bartholomew | Halfling Paladin | Wayfarer | TBD* | Heavy armor |
| Atticus | Tiefling Wizard | Sage | Prudent, thinks aloud | Owl familiar |
| Garran | Human Fighter | Soldier | Easy going, joking | Heavy armor |
| Krynt | Human Ranger | Wayfarer | Serious, prefer to act alone | Always hiding |
* Bartholomew just joined game - my first impression of a casual person and - not sure if it was on purpose, but got impression of the "mister obvious"
I'm RAW man, and rules say
1. If all you want to do is to communicate - you don't need to roll anything
2. If you want to influence NPC while communicating, you take an Influenc action please see rules for details
3. If you want to take passive role in the communication you can use actions such as Search or Study
4. Last but not least you can Improvise
So questioning basic things don't need a roll. But questioning that npc don't want to need a roll, correct?
I guess at a table it would go like this:
Player: I ask barkeep "where do I find mafia boss"
DM: Barkeep say he don't think he knows that
Player: Decides to take Influence action and rolls good
DM: Barkeep say wait, you know I start to remember
Now here on PBP it is common practice to make forward roll, ie Player: I ask barkeep "where do I find mafia boss" and just in case it will be require here is my influence action roll
We are not rolling any dice, DM carefully look at what PC is saying, analyzing exact wording, for example:
(a) "Who the hell you are?"
(b) "Who are you?"
(c) "Good day to you too. My name is Krynt and these are ... . What's your name?"
(d) "Good day to you too. We are travelling with friends and need some guidance, would you be so kind as to... "
Will result into quite different response from NPC
(a) He either cast silence on you or turn into small animal and run away
(b) He don't respond and you have a change to as a player to guess what was wrong with your first attempt to communicate
(c) He only say his name and continue working
(d) He stops what he is doing and start actually communicating
PC say "Who are you?" and roll for Influence Action (persuasion - pass)
NPC answer "Yourself, young man?"
PC choose use Search Action (Insight - pass again)
DM informs that it looks like NPC is annoyed about you did not answer his greeting and that you did not introduce yourself before asking him to introduce himself, that's not polite way to communicate with older person in these settings
PC say "Who are you?"
NPC don't answer
PC choose use Search Action and rolls Insight - pass again
DM - see previous spoiler
Social Strategy (Just Like Combat): NPC attitudes are now split into Friendly, Indifferent, and Hostile. Just like you plan for combat, you now need a strategy for social scenes. Finding an NPC's flaws, leveraging their bonds, or offering real favors will shift their attitude and mechanically lower the Difficulty Class (DC) of charisma checks.
Dice Rolls Aren't Mind Control: A Natural 20 won't brainwash a villain into giving up their plans, but it will get a hostile enemy to negotiate instead of fighting. It keeps the world believable and rewards smart arguments over blind luck.
How you want social encounter to be run Public
@solose first of all thank posting, we are only waiting @Thorstmixx to post now. I would like to clarify though (ignore if this was clear already) unless NPC explicitly bans you from conversation you are welcome to keep contributing to that conversation, just as in combat after rolling nat1 you keep fighting and only after you drop to 0 HP you stop
I guess it could be fun to try to involve Search [Action]
As mentioned before - Finding an NPC's flaws, leveraging their bonds, or offering real favors will shift their attitude and mechanically lower the Difficulty Class (DC) of charisma checks.
@PbPgameOn has already realized how offering real favors (helping with grass cutting) could shift the attitude, but you could try Search more
You will need to read this thread - a tutorial - to figure out how to do that
And create you first charactersheet - a fake one just to get used to site
Next this is to read this thread and this post for current party composition to decide what character do you want to play
By the way, let me know your level of experience with PHB 2024 - have you played any game with DM knowing the new rules well and strictly following them?
Just a note that we are playing based on 2024 system version and you may discover some things changed, but I will try to always point out players to latest rules when I'm using feature that is different in 2024 compared to 2014

4d6h3 : (3142) = 9

Now please test some combat dice rolling in tutorial thread and read the last events of game thread. I do not plan giving you a spotlight of entrance, instead we will assume Kaelynn have been around the party all the time. You are there in front of a bridge or maybe come late while ritual is performed because some prayer delayed you.
Feel free to post your PC actions if any - before all 5 of you step on the bridge.
| Name | Who | Background | Nature | Notes |

| Kaelynn | High Elf | Sage | TBD * | TBD* (looks like book worm and library patron to me) |
Kaelynn info to be done we see how player roleplay this character
Please post your PC reaction and action - just an idea - maybe your cleric would have sufficient self-confidence, or perhaps she has consulted with her deity and believe that crossing the bridge right now is just a test of your willpower: whichever the reason I am begging you to lead the party over the bridge to prevent story from hanging
