triggers his crossbow as soon as the arrow leaves the kobold's bow. His bolt punches into
Ken the kobold, sending the little monster thudding to the ground.
Ken takes 5 piercing damage and dies!
Having been attacked (but not hit),
Walter steps forward and brings his staff whistling up to crack
Arthur under the chin.
Arthur takes 6 bludgeoning damage!
Similarly,
Wanda rushes
Annie, swinging her staff into the
bandit's side.
Annie takes 4 bludgeoning damage!
Devon pulls a dagger from his boot and throws it dagger at
Aaron in one smooth motion, then hops down off of the buckboard to close with the
bandit.
Aaron takes 3 piercing damage!
At the first sound of combat,
Morton hops up to swing himself into the tree for a better vantage point. Unable to hike himself up, he trots a few steps toward the Road and feels the black rage flow from his demon patron into his soul, bubbling up in his chest, down his arm, and vomit forth from his outstretched hand as vile darkness spearing toward
Ben.
Ben takes 1 force damage!
Sword bared,
Sora steals down, slipping between shrubs, to get within striking distance of
Karl the kobold.
But some preternatural sense of danger overcomes
Ken, and it manages to avoid the unseen stab and the heavy kick.
Amnestria crooks a finger over the top of the rock, and evokes a gout of flame that scorches through the undergrowth and into
Kelly the kobold.
Kelly takes 15 fire damage and dies howling as it melts!
Grallaria silently swoops down from the tree over the bubbling, smoking mass and dives at
Ben the bandit, dividing his attention further. He is surprised enough at this that he does not take the opportunity to attack her.

Karl yips and barks in surprise, clearly calling out to its companions (two of whom are dead). It drops its bow and yanks out a rusty dagger, dancing aside from the monk's strikes, and tries to retaliate against
Sora!
Sora takes 5 piercing damage!
Kathy is still focused on
Walter, the initial assailant. She looses her arrow at the traveler!
Walter takes 8 piercing damage!
Ben draws a dagger in each hand, flinging one at
Grallaria and one at
Devon!
Grallaria is pierced with the dagger and starts to fall to the ground, but then disappears!
Berthold bursts out of the foliage, thundering down the gentle slope toward the road, yelling
"To arms!!! Strike them down!" and cleaves through
Kathy the kobold as he passes.
Kathy takes 10 damage and dies!
The charge continues, taking him adjacent to the next archer,
Amy, and the talkative bandit,
Ben.
Dell looses his arrow just as
Berthold steps near; the arrow whizzes past
Ben the bandit and is lost in the undergrowth on the other side of
Cecily's Road.
Antonius rises and moves inexorably down the slope. As the cleric of death calls upon
Wee Jas, a bell tolls for
Ben and
Amy. Glowing red chains erupt from the ground to wrap around
Amy the archer;
Ben sidesteps them.
Amy takes 7 necrotic damage!
"Your souls are not beyond judgment" Antonius intones as he nears
Annie the archer, who is fighting with
Wanda the wanderer. As he approaches, the cleric notices a foul smell.
Tossing down their bows, the
bandit archers draw swords to attack their assailants.
Aaron the bandit attempts to stab
Devon the pilgrim and does.
Devon takes 3 slashing damage!
Amy the bandit swings at
Berthold, but she is thrown off by his yell and the red chains; the wild swings go wide.
Annie the bandit attacks
Wanda, but the wanderer blocks her slashes.
Arthur the bandit finishes off
Walter with a few vicious blows.
Walter takes 10 slashing damage and dies!
Arthur gives a yell of triumph and says
"That'll teach you to mess with Black's bandits!!!"
Just then, the cover of the wagon rips apart, torn by claws, revealing
three troglodytes that were riding hidden in among the tightly-packed goods in the back! The exultant cry dies on
Arthur's lips.
Warren, the trog that tore down the covering, hops down out of the wagon to confront
Annie!
Wayne the troglodyte reaches out and claws at
Arthur the bandit.
Arthur takes 9 slashing damage and dies!
Willie the troglodyte bounds out of the wagon and rushes past
Devon to flank
Aaron the bandit, slashing with his claws and eagerly biting.
Aaron takes more than 9 damage and falls, clutching his ripped neck!
"We said there was nothing for you," Devon laughs, making it clear that he knew the monsters were in the wagon. Looking down at Aaron's twitching body, he addresses his allies:
"Try not to kill them all; any that survive we can bring to Her."
