Chapter 4.3: Returning to Report

Dell sends Morton back to the group to let them know what the scene is here. He is hoping those travelers know how to use those staves they are carrying. He notices the one saying something to the bandit leader. He quiets himself as much as possible to try and hear what is being said wondering now if this might be a set up.

Morton
Morton comes across Berthold waiting in the foliage just off the Road. "Dell's by himself." He points the direction back on the game trail. "There's nine bandits - kobolds and men - threatening three travelers." Having imparted this information, Morton continues out onto Cecily's Road and trots to join the others at the wagon, telling them softly. "110, maybe 120 paces west, there's a gang of armed highwaymen - bandits and kobolds - shaking down three travelers with a wagon. We might be able to take them by surprise if we intervene; we might be able to save some lives if we act fast."
Sep 4, 2026 11:40 am
Antonius listens carefully to Morton’s report, his expression hardening at the thought of nine armed bandits surrounding three travellers. He glances down the road, then toward the trees on either side.

"Then we should not give them the road." He gestures toward the surrounding undergrowth. "If we approach openly, their archers will have time to make us pay for every step. Better that we use the trees to close some of the distance unseen, then strike from both sides before they understand our numbers."

He looks between Berthold, Sora and Kazzak. "Berthold and Sora take one flank. Kazzak and I take the other. Amnestria and Dell can support from cover, while Sir Morton moves where he can best exploit an opening." His gaze settles briefly on the distant road. "Our first priority is those travellers. Break their encirclement, put down the archers, and give the wagon a chance to escape."

Antonius tightens his grip on the mace Berthold had lent him. "And if this is indeed an ambush, we will discover that quickly enough. Either way, we should move before those three are made to pay for our hesitation."
OOC:
Sorry for stealing your thunder @matmaisan, just getting the plan out there.

Understanding that the intention is to traverse the woods, Amnestria again disembarks from the wagon. She leaves her pack behind in order to move more freely, though with one glance at the underbrush she realizes that won't make much of a difference. She secures her only dedicated weapon, a dagger, to her belt, and tucks two small utility knives behind her back. Grasping her wand, Amnestria wordlessly signals her readiness to advance.
Sep 4, 2026 5:18 pm
Sora nods to Antonius and looks to Berthold to assess his readiness.
Sep 4, 2026 7:26 pm
Kazzak removes his helmet for a silent prayer.Moradin, please guide my hand so that I may quickly bring justice to the Dim Forest.

Then he dons his helmet and says, "l’m ready."
Sep 4, 2026 8:28 pm
Berthold was also ready to proceed in the manner suggested, nodding with determination at Sora, as the dwarven warrior made evident her disposition to move around the nearby wagon and attempt to surprise the highwaymen.
OOC:
Ready to go. It makes a lot of narrative sense that Antonius suggest this course of action, as Berthold was already a bit further away from most of the party, and wouldn’t have been yelling strategic instructions back at his companions.
Sep 4, 2026 9:30 pm
Antonius bowed his head for only a moment, one hand resting against the ruby-inlaid skull at his chest.

"Ruby Lady, guide our hands. Let the innocent be spared, and let those who would spill their blood be judged."

The prayer was quiet and brief. Antonius then lifted his head, his expression settling into the calm focus of a soldier preparing for battle. He glanced between his companions, giving each a final nod before raising two fingers and pointing toward the road.

"Move."

With that, Antonius slipped into the trees, keeping low as he advanced toward his assigned position. His mace remained ready at his side, while the words of Toll the Dead formed silently in his mind, the familiar invocation of Wee Jas waiting upon his tongue. His eyes remained fixed ahead as the party began closing the distance from both flanks.

No more words were needed. They had agreed on the plan. Antonius simply moved through the shadows, spell prepared, waiting for the first enemy to fall within his judgment.

Sora moves as quietly as she can through the underbrush, ignoring the pricks of sticker bushes against her arms and legs.

OOC:
You're not sure who the leader is, but yes. There's some foliage between you and the road, but you can see the speaker well enough to target him. You could also target any of the others; the bandits are showing their hand, confident of little to no resistance.

The Dungeon Busters hustle off into the trees, leaving Berthold's retainers with the ox and wagon in the Road.

Sora hurries to catch up to Berthold, who is already striding down the game trail. Soon enough, they can hear the murmur of speech in addition to the excited yipping of kobolds. They see a mossy outcropping of rock and make their way toward it as likely cover, only recognizing that Dell is already there when he gestures at them to keep their heads down. The rogue silently points out the different bandits and kobolds; the closest ones are about a dozen paces from them, just off of Cecily's Road.

Morton, Antonius, Kazzak, and Amnestria strike out north into the trees. Soon enough, the wizard can sense her familiar's presence as Grallaria has perched in a nearby tree. Using the bird's senses, Amnestria corrects the group's path so that they take a wider route rather than stumbling right into one of the kobold archers, which is small enough that they might not have seen it. As they begin to make out one of the bandits' derisive chuckle over the noise of the kobolds, the four of them duck down: they're close enough now that they can see the medium-sized bandits nearby. Luckily, their attention is focused on their prey: the wagon they have waylaid. Crouched double to reduce the chances of being spotted, the group pauses to consider how to get closer.

Antonius spies a jutting outcrop of stone and gestures that they could circle around and come closer, unseen in the shadow of that rock. Morton nods but gestures to a tree: he will climb it to overlook the road, and Kazzak nods; he has observed first-hand how far the warlock can shoot his dark death bolts. The librarian, the miner, and the watchman continue through the trees, flitting from bush to bush, until the mineral outcrop blocks their view of the Road. At that point, they hustle closer and peer over. They are only several paces from the Road; 6 paces from the nearest kobold archer.

The party can hear the interchange between the travelers and the bandits now. One of the travelers is speaking:
"We will happily share what we have, but on our pilgrimage we have no need of earthly treasure, so there is little of value. We probably do not have what you want, but we'd like to think we may have what you need. If you are hungry in body, mind, or spirit, we can feed you."
"Well!" one of the bandits replies, "It sounds like they've got food for us! Let's get it!"
The bandits Arthur, Annie, and Aaron start to approach the wagon and the yipping grows in intensity, the kobolds drawing their bows further...

Dell has his eye on Kathy. He will nock an arrow and Berthold's word to loose.
Sep 6, 2026 3:37 pm
The young knight looked at Sora, and silently pointed at her, and then to Karl. He then pointed at himself, and then the group composed of Amy, Ben and Aaron. He waited for confirmation from the dwarf monk, as he silently slid his long sword from its sheath.
OOC:
He’s going to try to approach the group in the front of the besieged wagon, unless Sora clearly tries to stop him.
Sep 6, 2026 7:03 pm
Sora nods and prepares to move to the rear, in order to draw fire.
Sep 6, 2026 10:08 pm
Dell will whisper to Berthold"I will wait until you get closer before I shoot. That can be the signal. Unless you make noise then I will fire immediately if you alert them."
Sep 7, 2026 3:23 am
Dell whispers to Berthold that he'll wait for the knight to get closer before loosing arrows. Berthold points west for Sora, and the monk begins sneaking carefully down and around toward the archers and kobolds there. Then the knight begins to slide carefully east down the gentle slope toward the front of the wagon. They've halved the distance to the Road by the time the first of the bandits reaches the wagon and grabs the canvas cover of the wagon.

"There's lots here," Arthur the bandit archer says, peering inside. "Boxes and barrels and sacks!" He pokes his head back out. "That's a lot of stuff; I think they must be merchants!"
"No! Don't touch those things!" Walter says, and takes a step toward the bandit. The closest kobold, Karl, interprets this as an attack, and looses its arrow. The arrow thwocks into the side of the wagon a hand in front of Walter, embedding itself in the wood.
OOC:
Everyone, please roll initiative. The bandits are acting now, but the enemy is not aware you are there, and your turns will resolve in initiative order.

It was bound to happen, but still Berthold had clung to the hope that they might take the bandits by surprise before they attacked the travellers. He prepared to cry out a challenge to the ruffians to distract them from the travellers.
