"The plains sound like our best option," adds Rurik, who didn't consider going back down the ravine particularly promising.

Wisco nodded, just getting tired of lava and fire and heat everywhere, wanting someplace fit for a Halfling again.

Cedrick shrugged and figured Rurik made enough sense to follow.

Ton, Fi Dre, Da Ak and Jo all look at Conrad and his companions, preparing to make a stand, then at Stee, Nathan and Jeptha running towards the plains, followed by others, then at each other. Within the same split second they all decide to follow those who flee.

A few of you dare look behind as you flee across the plains. Eldarin and Conrad are huddled with Hawthorne who has taken the role of combat tactician handing them a small mirror and a deer pelt. You watch the plan unfold spectacularly as Conrad uses the mirror to blind each giant as it rushes into range of Hawthorne’s short bow. He is able to land two arrows deep into the foremost enemy. Eldarin, once the giants were blinded, hid beneath the pelt until Hawthorne gave the signal. The elf swung his blade and struck the ankle tendon of the second giant as it passed. Although his blade found purchase, it proved insufficient to stop that giant from reaching Conrad and crushing him with its massive fist. The giant with two arrows in him was slowed such that Hawthorne was able to finish it off with a third arrow just as it simultaneously launched its spear into the chest of Eldarin. Then it was just the hunter and the giant. Hawthorne tried to run, thinking that the tendon wound may be irritated more by the chase. Frankly, it was the only hope as standing in melee with these killers was futile. As it turns out, so was flight. The stride of the giant was triple the speed of Hawthorne who didn’t even see the spear until it had burst out of the front of his chest. He died hoping that his sacrifice was enough.

On the plains, as the haggard crew flees, the unpredictable eruption of lava bursts threaten to burn you as you go.
OOC:
Roll twice per PC. One Luck check. One Reflex save.
PCs who have not fueled must make the Luck check at 1d24 no modifier and roll UNDER their current Luck score. These same PCs make their Ref saves at 1d16 plus their Ref modifier.
All other PCs roll d20s as usual.
These checks represent the entire hazard. After these, the survivors will find respite.

As they run across the plain Stee tries to keep his focus on the belching lava so he can dodge it. He is grateful for the small amount of food he was able to eat.

Nathan runs on praying his luck will hold he feels like he used quite a bit up earlier when the cage was bouncing along the ground. He is also weak from no food.

Jeptha just keeps on keeping on. He is running on fumes and doesn't know how much more he can take.
OOC:
Stee and Nathan rolled under their luck

Slane, Army, and Fortune wonder at the wisdom of running towards the belching lava instead of back down where they could try a safer route, so they try to hang back a bit and let everyone else go first.

Cedrick does his best to dodge the goûts of flame, but his reflexes were never his kindest function.

Rurik, for a Dwarf, was surprisingly nimble, so he hoped luck was with him, and so he bobbed and weaved around the flames to avoid them, hoping he would accidently get hit.

Wisco was not a fortunate soul when it came to luck but his reflexes were fair, so he let out a prayer and hoped for the best.

Rolls

Cedrick Luck - (1d24)

(16) = 16

Cedrick Reflex - (1d16-2)

(10) - 2 = 8

In the chaos of the flight through the hazardous plains, several of your crew were unlucky enough to be near a lava bubble when it burst. Some were quick on their feet and others were not. Berlotte, Fi Dre, and Hessarion are struck by burning shrapnel but stay on their feet to clear the danger zone, but Jeptha takes it to the eyes and falls to their death. Nathan and Magnar were not in the blast range but were knocked down by the ones dodging. But these are not the worst of what happened…
OOC:
So, Nathan and Magnar are prone but take no damage.
Fi Dre, Jeptha, Hessarion, and Berlotte take 1pt of damage.
When Rurik and Ton ran near a lavaburst, something arose from within the bubble. It stands on two legs, brandishes two fists, glowers with two eyes, but is made of pure flame! The elemental attacks!
OOC:
This is enough damage to kill BOTH Rurik and Ton. Nathan and Magnar are still on the ground and may attack or flee!

Rolls

Two fists, two targets - (1d20+3, 1d30+3)

1d20+3 : (19) + 3 = 22

1d30+3 : (30) + 3 = 33

Dmg Rurik, Ton - (1d4+1, 1d4+1)

1d4+1 : (2) + 1 = 3

1d4+1 : (3) + 1 = 4

Nathan will jump up and flee. there is no way he trying to fight that thing. He looks around for Stee as he runs.

As the majority of you clear the lava fields, you find the ground firm and the bushes abundant. Darting in and out of shade, plump lizards indicate that there is food to be found.
OOC:
Any PCs can make one of two checks; INT to forage, AGIL to hunt. DC 12, but several are still rolling at -1d
Because of the relative abundance, and I mean relative, each success will feed two.
Jun 12, 2026 1:52 am
Magnar struggles to get his feet under him, but he does before the flame elemental closes the distance.
OOC:
Should he stay or should he go now?
Jun 12, 2026 2:04 am
OOC:
I'm going to leave it up to an agility check, if you don't mind.
Magnar stumbles to his feet before the fire elemental has a chance to make it to him, but in his haste to beat a retreat and catch up with his fellow survivors, he stumbles and falls again, losing precious time. He looks back in time to see that fire elemental loom over him, his eyes filled with disbelief and terror!

OOC:
I'm going to go ahead and assume Magnar gets squashed.
Jermyn sighs, the death of his friends weighing heavy on his heart. One could only press on, and he goes out to forage for food.
OOC:
Jermyn will burn 4 luck to succeed.

Stee was both lucky and agile. Success is boring, right? ;)
