Elspaeth continues cautiously along with the others remembers their previous path and the dangers they had faces before.

Standing bunched at the top of the stairs, you see that the room remains as you left it. Bones from the animate skeletons lay scattered across the floor. The huge double doors are closed fast together. But silence reigns. The creature does not pound the doors. The traps do not tick.

Your torchlight reveals the hall on the far side of the room, and you know numerous crossbows rest in to the right in their alcoves. A see the great square hole in the ceiling. You are fairly sure that the trap you found in the main room upstairs likely exits here. It doesn’t take much to imagine what would have happened had any of your crew blundered into it originally. A long drop. Skeletal warriors. Bolts from the dark.

Taking one last long look at the double doors, Borgo checks his kit and gets door to make his way across the room. For all the awkwardness of his turtle-like appearance and movements, Borgo manages the passage across the room silently and without incident. His deft movement carry him around out over the brittle bones and shards and he stops only a moment to have another quick look at the closed doors before reaching the far side and standing to way the rest of you across.

OOC:
Oops. Double post.

Borgo stands in the hallway entrance as Berith’s light doesn’t extend much farther into it. He remembers it only goes a short way before turning right and that a short way along her remembers what he expects to be another pit trap. Across that trap the hall extended another short way before turning to the left.

OOC:
The party are here in this room:Crossbow Trap Room

Berith!, Elspeath and Marev stand pensively at the top of the stairs and Borgo stands in a small halo of light on the far side of the room.

He remembers that the cooridor he is in extends about 20' back into the dark, and then goes up another set of stairs about 20 or so feet before turning right. A short distance along after that was what he now believes is the pit trap.

What do you do now? Will the rest of the party sprint across the room after Borgo trusting their lives to the Goddess of Luck and Fortune? Will they flee in terror at having to crawl past the closed portal behind which brave Latremond lost his life, leaving the Goblin swallowed by darkness?

Seeing Borgo make it safely across, Berith gets down and does her best to slither across to Borgo while holding the torch.

Borgo prepared to light a torch on his side as well, as he was eager to explore the northern passage and confirm his suppositions regarding the layout of these ordian halls.

Following Borgo's lead, Berith makes her way across the room. Borgo's turtle across the room seemed almost graceful compared to Knight's efforts but she makes her way safely enough if not so quietly. Standing up in the hall entrance near the Goblin, her torch now illuminates the full length to the stairway about 20' down the hall's length. It's landing is not visible from this end of the room. The darkness has now encroached upon the stairwell up into the crossbow room, leaving Elspeath and Marev standing at the edge of inky darkness below.

Borgo, remembering no danger here previously, still moves to the base of the stairway with caution and has a look up. The stairs still lead up about 20" to an upper floor. The light of the torch doesn't quite illuminate any of the space above, but he remember the stairs end in another tunnel that extends to the right. Seeing no immediate change or danger, he returns to Berith to await the others who are now making their way across.

Having noticed no changes after Berith's traversal, Elspeath and then Marev crawl across the room one after the other.
OOC:
Okay, everyone is across and in the hall on the far side of the room. You didn't find or set off any traps in this area or the stairs previously, and the only danger is the pit trap in the hall above which Borgo, Elspeath and Berith know the approximate location of and where to look out for it and have relayed this information to Marev.

Is the intention for Borgo to carry a second lit torch, or to hand a second unlit torch to Berith (who has one of his tucked in her belt now)?

"Let's head up and check that passage," the goblin suggested, "it might link to something useful". He then prepared to step up and examine the passage carefully.
OOC:
If the whole party is on the north side of the crossbow trap room, no need to light another torch, but in the near future it might be useful to have a second light source so Borgo can explore without depriving the rest of the party of light.

Marev brushes the dust and dirt off his armor and sleeves after crawling
He tests the edge of his longsword before sheathing it partway and looking over at the goblin.
"I've got your back, Borgo," Marev says softly, glancing up toward the staircase on the right wall. "That trapped room gives us a decent bottleneck, and clearing out that unexplored passage makes sense. Lead the way"
OOC:
I made the mistake of not making Marev with many torches and not buying more in town
Sep 6, 2026 4:20 pm
Berith nods and waits for Borgo. She'll give Borgo a few steps in the lead and will follow close behind.
Sep 6, 2026 5:10 pm
"Time to go then," the goblin said, as he retrieved his bow and began stepping up the staircase upwards, to the upper level of these strange halls.
OOC:
In the maps thread, the crossbow-trapped room is labeled level 2. As we ascend, I’d presume we’re heading to level 1, which would mean the anvil and library level. Except we found no descending staircases on that level, except the hidden vertical shaft that Lea stop level 3. So Borgo is quite curious where this passage will lead the party.

Borgo makes his way up stairs with Berith close behind. Marev and Elspaeth follow behind, reaching the top of the stair as Borgo peeks around the corner. Seeing nothing but an empty dead end, the Goblin enters the hall, looking carefully for the seam he'd found previously.

Remembering Berith's recounting of her investigation here, he spots where she tried to prise it up. He sucked his teeth quietly as her efforts were likely pointless, but you know warriors. He's convinced this is another false floor as was round above and if anyone were to place their weight upon it that it would drop away suddenly.

Looking carefully on either side, he can see the crack runs away up the hall along the wall; can't skirt along a ledge. The crafty Dwarves had left no apparent means avoiding the trap and if it follows the same format as the one upstairs, it's likely 10' across to the other side. How would a fat Dwarf make it over?

After a moment, Borgo calls the others forward and points out the crack running across the hall and relay his findings.
OOC:
The ladder you used earlier descended down about 50' so you are still a bit below that top level. There is also a pic of this bit of hall in the Maps and Images thread.
Sep 7, 2026 3:04 pm
"Should I try to jump across, roped, of course? I wonder if there isn't something on the far side..." the goblin mused.
OOC:
The tunnel runs 7 squares W-E (which I'm assuming is 35' of distance). At what point does the seem start, and can Borgo see the far edge of the presumed pit trap?
Sep 8, 2026 3:17 am
OOC:
Can Marev make an Intelligence roll here to analyze the floor's mechanism figuring out where the pressure trigger is located so we can hit it with weight from a safe distance without accidentally collapsing the ledge we're standing on?
Intelligence is my only high attribute to work with
Sep 8, 2026 4:15 am
OOC:
Ah! Forgot! The seam is 15' along the hall. So, presuming a 10' pit there is another 10' of hall on the far side.
Sep 8, 2026 3:07 pm
Marev muses aloud about how it’s activated and you all agree it’s likely a cantilever of some sort. When enough with is applied the floor gives way and presumably closes again afterwards.

Berith’s torch starts to spit and sputter so she pulls the one Borgo gave her belt and lights out before the old one goes out.
OOC:
Also remember, your characters are more than just the numbers on their sheets. You don’t need to limit your actions to whichever stat is highest.

I took the liberty of lighting Berith’s torch for her, so now she’s got both hands occupied. One with a torch and one with a thick stick with a charred end.

Lastly, I’ll say just so you know that 10’ is something that the goblin or anyone else should be able to make relatively easily with a good running leap (DC 9).

Borgo set down his pack and retrieved his trusty coil of rope. He swiftly coiled the rope around his waist and handed the remainder of the rope to Marev. "Hold this tight," he said before walking a length back down the corridor. He then sprang into a run in an attempt to jump across the pit!

But his efforts were obviously insufficient… as he fell to the ground, the goblin wondered what horrors awaited him when the trap would spring open.
OOC:
Well, at least that was funny.

Rolls

Jumping! (Strength based check?) - (1d20-2)

(4) - 2 = 2

Berith watches Borgo tie the rope around his waist. She sticks the burnt out torch around her back in her belt just in case. She walks closer but stays out of Borgo's path. "Good luck."

She watches patiently as Borgo prepares himself and then springs into a run. As he misses the jump and drops like a rock to the floor, Berith says a small prayer to Ord for Borgo's safety and draws her sword, ready to leap into action.
OOC:
oof matmaisan. I winced when I read the dice roll haha
OOC:
if Borgo lands hard enough on the trap to spring it, Berith wants to see if Marev can pull him to safety. If not, Berith wants to follow Borgo down if he falls down the trap so he's not alone.

Marev’s eyes widen as Borgo’s jump falls painfully short. He instantly drops his center of gravity, wrapping the tether tightly around his forearms, planting his boots against a seam in the stone, and throwing his full weight backward to anchor the line.

Marev grunts through grit teeth, locking his arms and leaning back against the corridor wall to hold the rope taut before the trap door can drop Borgo into the deep dark.
OOC:
Well hopefully this isn't the end of Borgo but admittedly that was pretty funny. RNGesus has spoken lol
