As Borgo takes his run up for the leap, either nerves or outlandish misfortune causes the Goblin to mis-step and his ankle collapses as he springs for he leap. Instead of sailing through the air, he collapses and rolls a few feet across the floor. Borgo sits up, and wincing and reaching for his ankle when he suddenly drops out of sight along with the floor beneath him!

Though prepared for the possibility, Marev is still surprised by extent of Borgo's failure and the noise of the trap. Though the Goblin is slight, the sudden jerk from his weight pulls Marev forward two small steps before he sets himself properly. The halted drop is almost immediately followed by sound of Borgo smacking into something hard, and a few Goblin curses.

Berith, move forwards to shine her torch above the now looming pit to see Borgo hanging upside down 4-5 feet below the top of the level of the floor. The Goblin is obivously alive and relatively unharmed, as he awkwardly tries to right himself with one last relieved curse. You can both see plainly what lay at the bottom a good 15 or so feet down; a deadly looking array spikes. Dozens of the thin dark metal stakes are arrayed symetrically across the floor of the pit. If the fall itself hadn't been enough to kill or cripple, the spikes certainly would have. The proof of which is on display as there lay at the bottom the dessicated body of a robed figure impaled by many of the spikes below.

Hurriedly handing off the torch to Elspaeth, Berith lends Marev and hand in hauling up the Goblin. After the Goblin is standing on the edge nearly out of the pit, a soft ticking noise begins. Those out of the pit notice the false floor which now lay against the far side of the pit, begin to slowly move upwards to cover the opening again. Looking back, Borgo, quickly brings himself fully up into the hall with a huff, and works to catch his breath and clear the adrenaline.
OOC:
For future reference, you guy can choose the stat you use for physical actions if you think it makes sense. If you wanted to describe the action as acrobatic and use Dex that would be great, though it wouldn't have helped Borgo in this instance.

Give the apparent rate of travel of the "floor" you would guess you have 3-4 minutes before it closes again.

Secret Roll

"I was never very good at jumping," the goblin commented sheepishly as he dusted himself off. "Maybe I should try to do this smart," he spoke, gradually wrestling his dignity from a brush with shame, "maybe I can hang on to the wall, and climb my way across?" he mused.
OOC:
Does it look like the cadaver might have some useful loot? Borgo is instinctively trying to get some loot in hopes of eventually levelling! Also, does it look like climbing across the wall might be possible? He is a thief and would have advantage on that roll…

Elspaeth shifts her crossbow over one-handed and grasps the torch from Berith; bringing the illumination closer to see into the pit.
Sep 12, 2026 2:25 pm
"Borgo i can't believe you didn't die!" Marev says as he looks at the figure at the bottom of the pit
Sep 13, 2026 5:23 am
Turning and bending over to look carefully at the body as Elspaeth’s torch fully illuminates the base of the pit, you all can see pack straps running over the front of the dark stained grey robe, and the hint of a backpack beneath. Hanging on a thick cord belt it a dark coloured pouch. Around a thong on its neck is some kind of bangle or medallion which you can’t make out.

The hands are visible, one partially clasped around a spike piercing its abdomen, and they seem strangely shrivelled. The head and face are covered by the robes hood, perhaps thankfully so.

The false floor continues closing.
OOC:
Borgo knows that while technically possible to climb worked walls such as these, even with his expertise, it would be safer to simply jump across …as long as he doesn’t trip up.

While there are a couple of empty sconces along the walls, neither is on the wall over the pit.

Just for clarity, the false floor is swinging back UP into place.

Also, if you guys want to take the time you can effectively make it across the pit using your rope trick. I won’t make everyone roll over and over again since you’ve worked out a plan to traverse it?
Sep 13, 2026 4:23 pm
"Are those valuables that I glimpse below?" the goblin wondered out loud, a greedy undertone breaking through. He considered the pit and its closing top quickly.
OOC:
Does it look like Borgo could be carefully lowered into the pit to pilfer the items without being impaled?
Sep 14, 2026 4:01 am
Shifting his avaricious eyes to the slender pointed spikes, Borgo can see that they have been placed with great care, being evenly spaced in both directions along the bottom to form a very regular grid.

Someone evidently had a thought for recovery and clean up. Just looking he can see there is plenty of space to walk carefully between the spikes. At a guess they only come up to his knees, plenty long to pierce a torso, but no trouble for dwarves. Or goblins. He should have no trouble so as long as he doesn't squat down without care or, Gods fobid, trip again.
OOC:
Of course you can be carefully lowered on a rope. You don't have to go slow the entire way, but you certainly can't rush without some risk. You estimate that you could easily do what you are planning! But the trap is closing and you'll not likely make it up the rope before it closes. You imagine for a second getting pinched between that platform and the wall of the pit...

Though, the trap closing is not necessarily a problem given you already know how to open it. ψ(`∇´)ψ <--Mwah! Ha! Ha! Haaaaa!
Sep 15, 2026 4:45 am
Marev keeps a firm grip on the rope supporting Borgo, but his eyes are fixed on the slow, deliberate rise of the false floor.

"Borgo, if you're going down there, we need to hold this thing open," Marev calls out, keeping his footing anchored as he moves closer to the edge. He carefully inspects the rising slab's hinges, looking for the primary stress point or counterweight track driving the stone.

"Berith Grab something sturdy we can wedge into the trap mechanism to keep it open. There's a crowbar in my bsckpack" Marev says, maintaining his posture as an anchor for the goblin while pointing with a nod toward the seam. "If we wedge something right into the gear hinge at the pivot, the mechanism will bind before it can seal us out!"
OOC:
Marev is using his Intelligence to analyze the counterweight and gear mechanism of the false floor while holding Borgo's safety line.
Ill make an Intelligence roll for good measure

OOC:
Marev can't actually see the mechanism on the other side of the rising floor. Not being familiar with Dwarven enginering or traps, he's unsure what might be moving it. That said, he's seen mills and whinches before and would expect gearing, some kind of pushing rod, a pully and cable or wheels to be moving somewhere. But you'd have to get down there, wait for the floor to close enough (not long now) and have a look; optimally with a torch.
At it's heart, you all think Marev's plan a good one, but looking down at the bottom of the pit 15' below, it seems that whatever mechanisms are moving the floor will likely be at the top, well out of reach of anyone standing below. Unless more than one went down and you try to boost someone up?

Jamming though, is a very good idea for stoping the floor from closing...

Sep 16, 2026 1:40 am
Berith hurries to Marev's backpack and grabs the crowbar. Dropping to the ground she shimmies forward as far as she safely can without falling into the pit. She does her best to wedge it in as far out as she can reach and angled enough to try and stop the trap from fully closing.
Sep 16, 2026 8:07 am
Borgo hurries to collect the valuables without hurting himself on one of the nasty spikes. From his perspective, he attempted to identify any visible mechanism that might allow him to stop the closure of the movable trapdoor.
OOC:
Don’t want to do too much, but if there is something obvious from his vantage point, he could at least relay the information to the others.
Sep 17, 2026 3:47 am
OOC:
Dang! Where did my post go!? Maybe I didn’t press "post"? Grrrrr.
Sep 17, 2026 4:07 am
Berith doffs her pack and grabbing the crowbar waits on one knee for the floor to close so she can try her plan.

Borgo taps Marev’s waist and after the ranger sets himself stands on the edge ready to be lowered down.

With Elspeath standing guard with torch out thrust, Berith shimmies out over the edge almost to her hips, using the wall as she can for some support. After several attempts, the crowbars edge is set between the rising floor and the wall. With a loud scraping the floor stops. From somewhere not far ahead and below you hear a groan of stressed wood.

Using the crowbar to push herself back, you see that the partially raised floor now leaves about a two foot gap between its edge and the wall of the pit and is holding tight.
OOC:
I took the liberty of have having Berith remove her pack. There wasn’t going to be any way you could get out very far with all that weight on your upper body. You’d to tip into the pit.
Sep 17, 2026 4:23 am
Borgo, signals Marev that he’s ready and heads down in the gap.

Elspaeth kneels at the edge and holds the torch down past the edge of the gap to provide the goblin as much light as possible as he descends, while Berith dons her pack and stands guard.

Moving carefully, Borgo, now out of direct sight of the others, steps across the spikes to the corpse. Working quickly and carefully, he cuts the pouch and thong free. Dangling from it is a flat metal ovoid as long as your thumb, with a small dark stone at its centre. Cutting the side of the pack you see it contains the normal accoutrements of a traveller or adventurer and one palm sized wooden box with an oval shape etched into the top.

Tucking what you want away, you move back to the wall of the pit, making sure to ensure the top doesn’t tangle along the spike and signal to be lifted out.
Sep 17, 2026 5:11 am
Once up above, you all stop and quickly survey the goblin's findings.

The amulet is a bronze oval with a small dark red gem at it's center. Held up to the torchlight, you can see faint black lines spiderwebbed through it. Even hanging on an old thong you're sure it would fetch a fine price. Though for some reason, you don't like to touch it. Though, clean, it feels unusually slick or slimy in your palm and the feeling doesn't lesson no matter how you wipe or your hands.

The small box with what is now obviously an egg carved into the top is also made with care. In addition to the ovoid, it is carved with bands of interwoven bands with small circles etched in them. Inside are several sticks of finely crafted but incredibly rank incense. It smells not unlike the acrid smell of the creatures, but different with earthy or musky overtones. Many were smashed in the fall, but not all. This also will be worth a fair penny even it you have to ditch the incense to find a buyer.

OOC:

Egg Amulet: 50GP and 1XP
Incense Box: 30GP (50GP if you can find the right buyer) and 1 XP

The pack? The pack contained standard adventuring/camping items. Pick two light hand held items if you want something. Remember inventory slots!
Elspeath is currently holding the torch: 40 mins left

Do you wish to investigate these things more closely? Continue on?

"What strange things are these?" the goblin wondered out loud. "I wonder who this was. Not a man, but man-shaped.No nose, mouth or eyes, and hands that seem more like tentacles… perhaps an ancestor of these abominations? See the incense? Smells a bit like the damn things. "

Questions:
- The spiderweb pattern is in the red gem?
- the creature was using the amulet around it’s neck?
- does it seem like it is magical?
- does the ovoid shape with a red gem a symbol of something Borgo would know?

Borgo recognizes this as similar to the corpse, but not the source of the corpses smell.
OOC:
Questions:
- so the box contains some sticks of rank incense. These smell like the bodies of the creatures we’ve killed. But the smell is slightly different and we do not think that the abominations were perfumed in this incense, correct?
- the carvings in bands are on the outside or the inside of the box?
- the cover of the box has an ovoid carved into it, but the incense is inside?

- The spiderweb pattern is in the red gem?
Yes. It isn’t a literal spiderweb, just many fine branching filaments.
- the creature was using the amulet around it’s neck?
Yes
- does it seem like it is magical?
Someone with some kind of arcane background or knowledge would need to spend some time looking at it to know unless someone has detect magic.
- does the ovoid shape with a red gem a symbol of something Borgo would know? I wouldn’t think so, but you could try wracking your brains. DC18 Int Check.

They smell like the dead shriveled guy. It’s kind of like the creatures you’ve killed, but not as acrid. You wouldn’t mix them up.
- the carvings in bands are on the outside or the inside of the box?
Outside decorations; around the edges. The inside of the box appears bare, except for incense dust.
- the cover of the box has an ovoid carved into it, but the incense is inside? Exactly

The quiet assaults your ears as you stand near the lip of the pit.

Will you stay here and closely examine your find? Continue across to the other side of the pit? Or turn back for some other route?

"Good job Borgo!" Marev says as he breathes a sigh of relief that his plan worked and Borgo is still alive
OOC:
That was totally worth it I'd say! I'll just take 2 torches from the backpack since I only have 1 in my inventory
OOC:
I had this typed out days ago but apparently it didn't go through or i forgot to hit post
