Character Creation

The last lines of Joe’s character sheet include some notes on paradigm and tools. So far I’m only really concerned about spheres I think he’s got or will look to gain soonish.
This did however give rise to a couple of questions.
1. Most spheres have quite broad applications, more so than some common(?) tools; and it’s not easy to think of some of the suggested tools covering all possible uses of the sphere. (Yes, I have used the tradition books from earlier editions for ideas and background M20 either assumes or fails to provide in as much detail.) For example, weapons are suggested as an Akashic tool for Forces, and for some effects this is easily conceptualised (e.g. hitting things, or flying); for others, less so (e.g. creating soft music). Is there a problem with using different tools for different aspects of a sphere, so long as the delineation is sufficiently clear?
2. Some tools are highly versatile; is there a problem with using the same tool, possibly in different ways, for different spheres? The example I have in mind for this is calligraphy; written on (or carved into) an object it would serve for Matter; pictured in the mind, or drawn in the air, for Spirit.
I’m assuming in either case that development to eschew the need for tools would be done by sphere, rather than by tool.

I am also interesres in the answer to the question.

I think we can creatively go different ways on this.

One mage might associate one sphere with a specific tool, and another sphere with a different tool such as if they wanted to use them in combination, they might employ them both together, something akin to how you were describing what you imagined, eg make a meditation pose to represent Mind work, then write a calligraphic symbol for Matter. Another might see tools as incremental in complexity or power, to cast a low level spell, perhaps all that's needed is a sprinkling of blessed dust and a short phrase, but for something more powerful, a longer chant and a more expensive talisman. Yet another might believe that certain tools resonate with them more than others, because of that, those can be wielded with more range and potency of spheres, leaving the more common and mundane tools to be used to do the easier stuff.

Generally pick something core that relates most significantly to your affinity Sphere (the one that defines you and stems from your Tradition), and then extrapolate from there.

Development typically means being better and better at using fewer and fewer tools to produce more and more effects, and this can mean any creative variation of the above.

Yeah, I see Torrance as mainly an implement user, but maybe using motions for more unusual castings, maybe even vocal components for even more complex castings than that.
I will be consudering which implements to use.

Some of us are getting close to having to confirm Tradition, so here's the list again. Following character generation rules, it's important to pick your affinity sphere, let's use that to guide with Tradition you will belong to. (Don't read too much into their names lol)

• Akashic Brotherhood – Masters of mind, body, and spirit through the Arts of personal discipline.
Affinity Spheres: Mind or Life
• Celestial Chorus – Sacred singers who give a human Voice to the Divine Song.
Affinity Spheres: Prime, Forces, or Spirit
• Cult of Ecstasy – Visionary seers who transcend limitations through sacred experience.
Affinity Spheres: Time, Life, or Mind
• Dreamspeakers – Preservers and protectors of both the Spirit Ways and the Earthly cultures that have been looted, abandoned, and oppressed.
Affinity Spheres: Spirit, Forces, Life, or Matter
• Euthanatoi – Disciples of mortality who purge corruption and bring merciful release from suffering.
Affinity Spheres: Entropy, Life, or Spirit
• Order of Hermes – Rigorous masters of High Magick and the Elemental Arts.
Affinity Spheres: Forces
• Sons of Ether – Graceful saviours of scientific potential.
Affinity Spheres: Matter, Forces, or Prime
• Verbena – Primal devotees of rough Nature and mystic blood.
Affinity Spheres: Life or Forces
• Virtual Adepts – Reality-hackers devoted to rebooting their world.
Affinity Spheres: Correspondence or Forces

And on that note, because this game is all about organically arriving at which spheres and therefore which Traditions you end up with, I had some fun counting all the times your PC used magic, give or take. These results might surprise you!

Kyle: Forces x6, Matter x1, Prime x6
Minsoo Correspondence x3, Life x4, Time x1
Myra: Correspondence x2, Forces x1, Prime x2
Joe: Life x2, Mind x1, Prime x1, Spirit x1
Jonathan: Entropy x1, Spirit x1
Wren: Forces x1, Mind x1, Prime x4

Maybe this actually helps you figure out what your PC's true affinity sphere is, (almost like a lifepath character creation!). Maybe you could consider the relevant Tradition! Have fun with this.

Our bodies strive to recall the harmony our souls knew before we were born.

Dissonance is not the absence of harmony, merely a harmony that needs to be adjusted until the song rings true.

Life's a gift, but most poor bastards never get past the wrapping paper.

I'm speaking to the end of silence, can you hear the thunder yet?

Death isn't just a word to me - it's genesis.

I do not manifest change - I become change.

Onwards and upwards - all or none!

Everything is intertwined, to understand your tears is to understand the sky.

It's all in the code: you, me, the world, everything.

These are the caption quotes for the nine Traditions, see which resonates the most with your character. (If none do, I'll have to look into the Technocracy!)

Between those, I still struggle - maybe even for similar reasons - the deeply rooted spirituality of both traditions. So, Wren apparently will be a bit of a stranger/outsider no matter the choice - but her discipline trained to cope with the hyper-sensuality (archery, meditation, even just skateboarding) should give enough ties to the Akashic Brotherhood to be acceptable hopefully. Her music / audio affinity should give enough ties to the Celestial Chorus, although she wouldn't go as far as acknowledging "the one" as a creator, she does see the music itself as underlying everything - I bet a not so traditional Chorister could reconcile that well enough.

Fun fact: I liked "I'm speaking to the end of silence, can you hear the thunder yet?" and thought it might represent her scene at home ;) and another fun fact, an AI suggested that Wren with her music isn't that far from Virtual Adepts - not fully sure if I'd agree, but "Everything is Music" and "Everything is Data" might indeed be reconcileable ;)

FWIW I wouldn't mind Wren being confronted with such choices IC - I mean, she is not "obviously born into one of those traditons" anyway, right?
