I'll have some pointers for what might be more useful / less useful given the scenario that we're playing: eg your characters probably won't need skills like Driving, and it's unlikely they'll be messing with Firearms. I'm inclined to already start everyone off with 1 dot in Academics (they're about to graduate from high school after all). Things like that.
Jan 17, 2026 2:45 am
More importantly, I'm considering some house rules tweaks, but only if people are up for it. Because the PCs are younger and newly-Awakened, I'm considering to allow for you not to have to commit to a Tradition yet, and let it unfold during the first story arc. (But I don't mean you're all playing Orphans.) We'll do this only if this is interesting for you to try.
Next, similarly with the Spheres. I'm open to the idea of selecting Spheres as part of storytelling, eg something happens early, and your PC somehow uses Forces, or Life, or something, to deal with it. This means this PC will then have dots in that Sphere. For our general discussion.

This sounds interesting to me, it makes sense that if we are still awakening it might not be available yet.
I am thinking of picking up more Arte at character creation though?
I am thinking a brainy person, secondarily body. However if there are no social characters, I will build that.

All above are fine with me. Perhaps characters start with one or two sphere tied to their awakening

I have made a Mage character sheet that does a bit of calculations, summing attributes, abilities, adding health modifiers to the roll. I can't help but tinker with such stuff :) Feel free to grab it

There is a flaw worth 1 point that is kind of the basis for this game.
Do we all take it?
Do we all take it, but it does not count towards the flaw/merit limit?
Do we all ignore it?
Awakening often hits before legal maturity. This wasn’t a problem in the old days, but within modern society a young mage has certain built-in limitations: physical size, life experience, legal status (or lack thereof), and the challenges of being taken seriously in a grown-up world. Perhaps you’re a child prodigy… or an adolescent whose reality truly is beyond understanding. In any case, this Flaw represents the social, legal, and physical obstacles of being a kid.
Depending on the value of this Flaw, your character might be a young child (3 points), a pre-adolescent young person (2 points), or someone near the verge of adulthood but not quite there (1 point). In the first two cases, you should also take Short to reflect a growing body… and in all cases, your ability to run with the mages is going to be limited by your age and the ways in which people react to it. For more details, see Child-Mages in Chapter Two, pp. 115-116.

Oh that's a good one Rune! It's definitely the core premise of this game, so let's have all PCs have a 1 point Child Flaw. I'll let that be a freebie, doesn't count towards the limit.
To reiterate, you're 17 turning 18, or just 18, in your last year of high school. (Unless you are some genius who's slightly younger, or a repeat student and slightly older).
And thank you for making the character sheet, we can all use that!

I like the idea of not yet having Traditions set and easing into them. This approach, I feel, eases a lot of the problem having to shoehorn a grab bag of Traditions together with no real solid connection. Growing into them makes it feel more organic.
Great job on the character sheet, Rune!

My hand slipped.
I built most of a character. I have backgrounds and merits and flaws and skills and attributes and all my points spent. ...
Mostly brain character.
(As in good knowledge skills, highest stars mental, even bought more mental stat)
No social adeptness to speak of though.
Specifically didnt choose any mage stuff (except getting more Arete, whenever that will actually come into play)
First concept.
Torrance Riley Drakesmith
But is friends call him.... well he will find out when he gets them. Not that there arent people who like him, but most forget about him later. He's the one who drives himself from his little "apartment" to school and back again. Not that his living situation is because of wealth, more that he needed an address somehwee and the basement apartment he rents works for a legal address.
As for school... he is smart smart. Not correct teachers smart, like correct professors and rework textbooks smart. Of course that means he gets bored at school, he does well, he is just bored.
So he has projects, research, work, and anything else that can keep him busy and not worrying about his life situation.

Myra Lockwood is a high-achieving, sharp-tongued math kid who lives two lives without meaning to:- At home: polite, traditional, careful. She plays "good granddaughter" in a house that feels like it’s watching her back.
- At school: argumentative, independent, allergic to fuzzy thinking. She insists reality has rules, and if people can’t define their terms, they’re just performing.
- Underneath that is the pressure-cooker theme: a brilliant mind pushing against a reality that keeps editing itself around her.
The Lockwood house
- Is old, too large, and quietly self-correcting. It doesn’t feel haunted; it feels managed.
- Old mansion, lots of dark wood, old money [Merit: Property 3] [Background: Resources 4]
- Extensive library [Background: library 3]
- Several enchantments around the house. Created by her mage parents
- Two rooms that you keep forgetting
- Enforces the occupants to be traditional, respectful, "proper", but also protects them from prying eyes
- Myra is starting to resist the mental effect [Merit: Ironwill]
- [Background: Arcane/Cloaking 1]
[ +- ] Something like this

Grandmother: Evelyn Lockwood
- [Flaw: Ward 3] Deep emotional bond + obligation to protect/please her grandmother; it anchors her choices.
- Warm, practical, tradition-heavy
- She genuinely loves Myra
- Accepts the order the house enforces
- Love, rules, safety, silence.
Mother: Dr. Celeste Lockwood
- Agent for Order of Hermes. Status: MIA years ago
- Always with a red pen nearby
- Sang a lullaby that Myra can’t fully remember, but her body relaxes when she hums it.
- Precision, protection, withheld truth.
Father: Adrian Lockwood
- Agent for Sons of Ether. Status: MIA years ago
- Smelled of old books
- Invention, risk, warmth, danger.

Proposed Character Creation Changes
I'm hoping to create the sense that your PCs are newly Awakened (few days, few weeks, at most few months ago), or just about to Awaken. The first scene will be exactly that, something that nudges your characters to consider the changes happening in their lives.
So generate as usual, except:
1. Tradition and Spheres
- You don't have to commit to a Tradition yet. If you do, that's fine, it means you've had a chance to interact with some aspect of that Tradition, either because you know a mage, or they are your parent, or you achieved some insight into that Tradition. If you don't choose yet, your first character arc will give you that opportunity.
- Same with Spheres. Go ahead and calculate the dots you're likely to have in Spheres, but you may leave out specifying which ones they are. Like a blank cheque, we can agree for example that perhaps you'll have 2 dots in one Sphere, 1 dot in another Sphere, or some combination. If you choose this, in the first in-game instance where you declare you want to use a Sphere power, and you use it successfully, that's when we commit to the dot.
- I'm proposing an Arete of no higher than 2.
2. Talents, Skills, Knowledges
- Take a free dot in Academics.
- Consider carefully that some of these are less important, or are less likely to be available to young adults, or will be interpreted differently. Eg Drive may not have to mean you have a license, but can represent your ability to skateboard, ride a bicycle. Survival is less useful, but perhaps your character is part of the hiking or mountaineering club. I don't expect you to have Firearms or Melee much, but I'm not against it, if you're a javelin athlete, Melee makes some sense. Etiquette makes you a great role model in school, you know the right behaviours at the right times.
Streetwise will be about cliques in school than about gangs on the streets (although it could be both). Brawl might mean you are in the boxing team.
Politics is more about being student council president rather than a country's government (could be both). Same with Law and Medicine. I'm not ruling out the fact that you might be smarter than your teacher in some areas (4 dots make you professorial level!)
3. Backgrounds
- I'm treating backgrounds in a similar fashion, as a deep part of your characterisation.
Eg Resources are family resources, not your own, and you're a child of your family who benefits from that. Allies and Backup are fellow students, Retainers are your clique, Contacts could be from other schools, Mentor is likely a teacher, Patron might be a school investor or on the board of directors. Fame, Influence, Legend will generally have to be in the school context, although it is possible you're famous outside and the school knows it. Location-related backgrounds are best suited to a place within the school compound, eg Library could simply mean you access the school library in ways that others don't, a Node could be somewhere on the grounds where you feel more recharged, your happy place, we might even be able to justify a Sanctum.
No to Familiars, sorry, we're not playing Hogwarts. (If you really want one, let's talk first).
I encourage everyone to take a bit of Arcane/Cloaking. I can't justify giving it to you as a freebie, but it does seem integral to our metaplot, ie these mage children have gone unnoticed so far.
4. Virtues and Flaws
- Please take a +1 Flaw in Child. (You get another point to play with!)
This is not exhaustive, but I hope everyone understands where I'm coming from in order to set up as appropriate a character profile as possible for your PCs. Ask me if you are unsure whether something fits or not. And help me co-create if you have further suggestions.

I’ve been running through this in my head for a few days! The thing that jumped out to me most was Celestial Chorus. So I think I’m going to build my character around that little kernel. Working on it, and hope to submit today or tomorrow!

Looking for all types: nerdy bookish, sports jocks, artsy/musicy, science research or med school wannabes, council presidents, team captains, cheerleaders, 'mean girls', fashion blogger/influencer, crafts/engineer/handsy makers, potential dropouts, transfer students, rich kids, poor kids, kids holding a job outside, teacher's pets, bullies.
Just remember these are senior kids, nearly/already young adults: they're searching for theit adult identity, they fight, they fall in love, they have ambitions, they shoulder responsibilities, they make questionable life choices.
Family context is relevant in this game, something in the story will involve family. Siblings, are they in the same school, or if older, they could be a Contact in university. Parents, one or both around or absent, do they work in Ashford (lying low perhaps), extended family, cousins, clan, with heritage in this setting.

Mom:
Mom is the beating heart of connection, family friends and anyone visiting knew mom.
An incredible speaker and often highered intermediary between various parties. And always right, at least anything she said sounded right, no matter who was listening. And she was always right about you. She always knew what her kids, neighbors, friends, family, were doing, what they meant or needed.
Always aware, Torrence learned from her to be aware too.
Dad

Never overspoken, never needing to prove himself because he had nothing to prove, and he had no need to waste effort convincing the blind.
And he was always there when he was needed. Anywhere he was needed, he was there to a surprising degree. For family and friends. A pillar to rely on.
He was the one who was an example of focus and reliability..
Mother

"A woman out of time who never seemed to run out of time." As it was once said, and then sometimes referenced, about her. She seemed to float from event to event, from group to group. Never staying anywhere longer than she needed ro, and never needing more time than she spent. The family library (where Torrence's library was mostly pilfered from inthe short time he had to move out) was all actually her library.
Older Brother

Good at everything
Is something many younger siblings think of their older siblings. In this case it is right. Currently at university with partial academic and a partial sports scholarship (the rest, of course, paid by their parents), and also able to thrive socially. A constant reminder of how, despite Torrence's intellect, there is always room to round out your skills, and the benefit of doing so.
Older Sister
The artist of the family. Commissioned and published works, and a few meuseum pieces. A current dual major in Fine Arts and Economics with several published articles (and a documentary too) on the thuths behind the economics of the art workd and how it is manipulated by the upper echelons of society.
A constant reminder that there is always unseen connections to what you are living, and unseen effects to what you do.
On that note, I think I have the final draft of my starting character done..

Kyle Murphy is shared publicly for review and feedback.
Orphaned by the tragic loss of his parents Kyle now lives with his uncle and doesn't quite fit in with most kids when those with similar interests. On top of that weird things keep happening recently making harder than ever to fit in. The most notable is the drone that started as a school project but now seems to be able to act independent and even self modify itself when he's not looking and where are the parts coming from? Kyle isn't sure how to handle what he had been able to do lately and it's looking for answers. The cryptic hints flashing or scrolling on the small LCD screen the done somehow added to itself are not quite comforting.

Not at all! We can work Arete 1, I imagine the PC will have a diverse range of abilities as a result, which is cool if we find enough interactions between those many Spheres.

Jonathan Wyck: Ashford High's resident thorn in everyone's side.
He could be one of the top athletes at Ashford; he thinks sports is a hollow pursuit. The Jocks hate him.
With his 'hot goth boyfriend' looks and edgy personal magnetism he could be one of the social elites; he's the bane of every 'I can fix him' attempt anyone's ever made. The Elites hate him.
While he's definitely not an Honor Roll student, he does tend to point out the strong 'Gifted Student to Fast Food Employee Pipeline'. The Academics hate him.
He doesn't piss everyone off, not all at once anyway, but he's the constant target of a revolving cadre of people who he's embarrassed or offended in some way, shape or form. It's not that he's manipulative or vengeful, it's that he's unwaveringly, brutally honest. And if it's one thing that really gets under people's skin in the post-truth age of 'Image is Everything' , it's the unvarnished Truth.
The Wyck household
- Jonathan is technically an orphan; both his father and mother were killed during, what official records report as, a wild animal attack while hiking. What gets left out of the reports is the where, the when and especially the crime scene photos.
- Rather than ending up in state custody, he was remanded to the care of a legal guardian. No one really questioned the sudden appearance of a man with all the legal papers to take custody of Jonathan on the midnight of his parents' brutal demise.
- Jonathan resides with his guardian, a vaguely Asian man on the downside of middle age, whom he calls "Uncle Dudley". The pair live in an average detached track home with a garage that Jonathan uses as an art studio. There is nothing remarkable about the home beyond its occupants.

Still working on a revised concept after agreeing that my original Akashic-Verbena bookworm was far too angry and hard to integrate with others. Unfortunately the changes seemed to rob the idea of its galvanising spark until I had the idea of the character being a Medium (as the 2-point Merit in BoS p69) with some Dream and one or more ancestor spirits looking out for him/ helpfully meddling (Spirit Mentor, BoS p74).
I haven't entirely let go of any of the original ideas, just sifting the mix; A Verbena and an Akashic for parents, one now deceased; an Avatar with a history involving the Burning Times and some consequent anger issues (Short Fuse flaw, BoS p50); bookworm /academic nature focused on history, Occult and maybe Esoterica; a foreign student (to explain why I don't know a thing about Boston); Attributes are Mental>Physical>Social, Abilities are Knowledges>Skills>Talents.
(Dual Affiliation BoS p79 as a 7 point merit is right out despite being basically appropriate - it seems ridiculously overpriced for what it does.)
I'm throwing these thoughts out there now, partly to reassure everyone that I am working on a character, and partly to check whether anyone is liable to take offence; I have no personal connection with Buddhism, Shinto, shamanism, medicine practices or any other form of real-world spirit or ancestor veneration, and I don't want to upset anyone who does possess any such beliefs when I try to play any such character off the back of some superficial online research.
If this is anyone here, please let me know and I'll think of something else. PM me if you don't want to reply publicly.

What is everyone's character's main skill categories?
I see two other int based characters, and while that fits the student theme, I see us needing a rounded group.
Even if our specialties vary some in the Int based department we are heavily leaning one way so far.

Honestly, getting full coverage isn't needed. Sometimes overcoming the dysfunctionality is party of the fun/challenge. Variety is a bonus. However, I understand some prefer balanced teams. so . . .
Kyle is basically a science, tech, computer, geek (4)
Attribute: P 5 / S 3 / M 7 // Abilities: T 6 / S 10 / A 14
But due to his childhood and hobbies he has a bit of research, athletics, awareness, investigation (2)
With low social ability and graceless flaw. Nice enough likable but but lacks awareness and social grace.
Resources 2, sanctuary (lab) 2, arcane cloaking 4
I have a bit of wiggle room. Adding a few more points to stealth or brawl wouldn't break the character. Or I can shift abilities points to help the group of anyone had requests/suggestions.

@runekyndig : You seem a bit short still : Prioritize Abilities as above (13/ 9/ 5). Looks like you can add more skills?

I am not sure if we need that spread. Unless Bedzone II indicates we navigate ourselves into the wrong problems when we do not have at least one social character - I would say we all should play what we are the most comfortable playing.
And I mean, if we don't navigate ourselves into any trouble, Bedzone II hasn't done his part - it's WoD in the end, right - not "we are the always good and always victorious heros.
Jokes aside, Wren is also a M>P>S build. If she ain't notice something, nobody will.

I believe we have a Dreamer who can in a pinch boost to a social skill. Seems like a good use of their ability
An alternative to collaborating builds is to leave a few points unspent for in game character development. This can reflect our still developing nature as teens. (As long as @BedzoneII is fine with points being spent to improve characters mid game) Ex: make an attempt and regardless of pass/fail player decides character will use that ability in the future and improves it.

I don't think it's essential to have all our bases covered character-wise. BZ is great as a GM/Storyteller and I don't feel like it'd be a huge obstacle in the game if we came up against something 'we didn't prepare for'. Playing the character we want to play, I feel, is a more important factor than optimizing the party spread.
Jonathan is a P>S>M character, if that helps the mix.

I'm going to totally support Psybermagi's idea, in that if you want, you could choose to not spend some of your points now (please keep track of them in your notes), so that you could spend them better later. We haven't planned so far ahead yet for XP, but it is certain my story arc will be in four seasons, so four instances where I will award XP. In addition, I will give everyone a little bit for completing session 0 to signal that we've gotten a grasp of our PCs.
Don't forget I'm still okay with some unassigned points, to be gradually assigned in the course of session zero ie pre-Awakening / post Awakening.

Play what appeals to you best PhoenixScientist! I'm not too concerned about 'party balance', as this is totally not a dungeoncrawl. Where possible, there will be multiple ways to resolve a situation, so if you want to talk / sneak / bash your way through, those options should typically be available. If everyone's the scholarly type, then hey, maybe everything's just one exam after another! :P And on the flip side, if by sheer coincidence two PCs have roughly the same point builds in certain areas, maybe that'll come into play too because perhaps the challenge needs two successful rolls from two different characters.
I've been enjoying carefully reading all the features, abilities, backgrounds you've chosen, (took me some days!) as I intend that most if not all of them will come into play, so all the more reason you should craft exactly what you want. Eg, somebody was talking about skateboarding *GM makes notes

As more and more of the features of your school life unfold, you can begin to flesh out the concrete details of various things in your character sheet, such as:
- Allies can come from your club mates or teammates, or classmates who have your back. Contacts can be people affliated to the school. Retainers are juniors who listen to you.
- Status and Influence can be determined in relation to your peers, or at higher rank, even your teachers.
- Mentor can be a teacher, or one of the adult staff in the school. Spirit Mentor can be someone related to the school as well.
- When we explore locations, Sanctum can be one of the places in campus, so can Chantry. There's also at least one Node as well. Library, conveniently, can easily be literal.

Who is Emily Walsh?
She was just mentioned here
And did I read it right, that she walked into the gym and the multipurpose hall?
I'm doing my best to keep track of all the NPCs and players

Thanks for that, it's a big cast of NPCs, potentially overwhelming. I will continue to update the list of characters in the Worldbuilding thread and delete older versions.
And yes, I did describe Emily Walsh, freshman, as entering the multi-purpose hall, AND also the gym.

Can this who have fixed their spheres share them? Several have already shared but I'm not sure I got it all. I just don't won't total overlap with others.
Other than Prime I am considering some combinations of Forces, Matter, Correspondence, and Mind but won't have an Arete above 1 until after we get xp

I have Joe’s spheres pencilled in as Life 2, Spirit 2, Mind 1, Entropy 1. I could be persuaded to tinker with these, but as yet no compelling reason to do so. Likely development foreseen in Prime, Mind, Forces in that approximate order, and eventually Spirit, which is likely to always be a significant sphere for him.

Torrance is probably going to take time, and maybe mind, and nothing else is planned.

On that note, the organization I think would connect most would be Society of Ether, and their core are Entopy, Forces and Prime. I have to choose one and if the layout stays about as it is, I wouldn't really co sider takkng entropy because the overlap with Time seems to be large. But also our coverage of Forces and Prime are pretty strong.
On another note. Should we consider joining the same group? It seems to me lore-wise it would make sense that that would happen but who knows.

Thanks for compiling, much appreciated! Overlap is bound to occur since there are only 9 Spheres, but the table does help everyone see that their Sphere combinations don't overlap too much (and by the looks of it it doesn't. Much of the magic will be about combinations of spheres to produce effects.
Arete will go up to 3 soon, which will diversify you even more since some of you might go deep while others go broad.

For our intro chapter, nothing is set in stone on your character sheets. So feel free, you may change your attributes and your talents/skills/knowledges, as long as you haven't used them yet. If you have used them, then let's consider that 'locked in' as part of you. I may also have one or two suggestions on background changes.
Similarly with Spheres. I asked everyone to imagine a pre-Awakened self (although one or two preferred a just Awakened state) where you are about to wonder why you have certain powers. Game-wise that was being represented as you withholding from committing fully to which Sphers you are choosing or have chosen. Along the way in this chapter, I have specifically invited instances of magic use, representing your attempts at certain efforts to go beyond the ordinary. So if you did indeed use some nascent magic, please begin to note that in the form of dots in that particular Sphere. Some of you used it more, some have hardly used it. This beginning use is akin to an Awakening, and I will invite you to start narrating it that way more and more.

At the completion of session zero, please give yourself:
+1 xp for participation
+1 xp if you can point to a distinct character moment that captures the essence of who your character is*
+1 xp if you can describe a relevation that you uncovered or understood
+1 xp if you helped someone or some situation in some way
*Speaking of essence, if you haven't done so, could you identify with either dynamic, pattern, primordial, or questing, based on how your character reacted to critical moments. Did they daringly react or passionately feel, did they step back to weigh the situation, did they look towards what was secret and hidden, or did they look forward to what might happen next? You will need this when we speak about your Avatar.
This is also a good time to change up any of the dots you've allocated to attributes or abilities or spheres; consider us to be tweaking your sheets to get a more accurate representation of your PC.
Also, consider assigning your dots to your main Sphere if you haven't already done so. It's the one you resorted to using more than the others so far, emergently. We should lock that in.

+1: Joe turned up
+1: Joe found himself suddenly multiplied in his own head, which encapsulates both an aspect of his power he is likely to use a lot (multi-tasking is a very useful Mind 1 effect) and the need to keep conscious control over his Avatar; perfectly encapsulating his ‘fish out of water’ aspect.
+1: Joe has learned that Emily Walsh was real and alive, and that her disappearance was not itself an illusion.
+1: Joe has been shepherding Emily to and from school, and offered to help Minsoo when she appeared to be outnumbered.
Joe’s Essence is listed as Questing; this was an initial approximation but it certainly seems to suit the Avatar’s nature in trying to do something that aligned with his immediate purpose but he didn’t actually need… if Essence actually applied to Joe himself, there might be a case for Pattern as he’s been cautious and methodical (so far…) but for one thing he’s being like that because of acute awareness of things he’s been warned about, and he’s in a relatively unfamiliar situation, and I think he’ll develop as he gains confidence. For another, if there’s a little difference between current-Joe and his Avatar (who is probably more similar to future-Joe?) it should make things more interesting; it suggests a direction in which his Avatar may want him to grow. I’ll take any help I can when it comes to conceptualising a Seeking, which I have never got the hang of.

Straightforward.
+1 xp if you can point to a distinct character moment that captures the essence of who your character is*
I think the running to school scene is the most pure example of Minsoo’s character that I had there. The music, the athlete background. The strange mishmash of punk and sporty. Kinda hot on the immigrant background, clashing of cultures thing I had in mind.
+1 xp if you can describe a relevation that you uncovered or understood
The entity in the basement.
+1 xp if you helped someone or some situation in some way
I don’t think this one really applies sadly, unless I’m trying to stretch. Minsoo was pretty reserved to start out.

+1 Participation - straightforward
+1 Character moment - "I'll come with you." That's defining for new Wren. She's been shy and timid and overwhelmed the past years, this is the first crack in that withdrawal. Wren beginning to move toward rather than away, without asking permission or hedging. So, picking that precisely because it is not how Wren used to be.
+1 Revelation - Joe "broadcasting" through the headphones in the assembly. The first indication that she doesn't just sense places and atmosphere - she can read people, individually and distinctly. She began to realize this is an ability she can control and actively use - after years of being helplessly exposed to it.
+1 Helped someone - taking care of and accompanying Daniela to the counselling wing.
I would like to have some tension when talking about essence. With Wren being timid and controlled, I think a Dynamic avatar is a nice companion for that. I could also see a Primordial avatar and then joining the Ecstatics to get the tension in. Controlled Wren with Dynamic avatar, I would tend toward the Akashik then. I can safely say though, that I am still struggling to pin that down at the moment.
Still working through my sheet as well. I need to define Wren's take on music (Art vs. Expression talent for example). If I choose Akashik, I should also probably have some room left for Do, no?

I am choosing between Forces and Prime for 1 dot. @BedzoneII , thoughts?Prime is basically the essence of magic. So Mind and Prime for example could make thought manifest as something with magical properties. Time and Prime helps ascertain when is the right moment for magic to happen.

Well. That's interesting. It looks like enchanting only works if you have Prime, and I do love some crafting.
If that is right I would like to switch over.

It's time to nudge everyone towards their Focus! Thanks to version M20, p565-600 is a lot to take in, so let me simplify, and also explain to everyone where your PCs are at this point.
Focus = paradigm + practice + instruments.
Your paradigm is your belief or understanding of how magic works. Eg do you think magic is all about faith, or all about illusion over reality, or about power to make things happen, or about cause and effect, etc.
Your practice is what method you (think you) use to make magic happen. Eg, does your magic work like alchemy, or witchcraft, or weird science, or miracles, or personal spirituality, etc
Your instruments are the tools you use to do magic. Eg, do you use wands, gems, books, bones, symbols, music, numbers, sex, drugs, dance, etc
So far, because your PCs are literally experiencing magic for the first time, I've ruled that it's flexible and spontaneous, kind of 'so long as you can think it, it happens'. That's how they discover they are magically inclined or awakened.
But what will happen next is that, more and more, if they seek to reproduce the same ability, they need to resort to whatever they were doing previously in order to bring about that effect. Eg Eldarin has been describing how Wren turns to musical pattern as a means of bringing about a magical effect. To go further, she'll need to use an instrument to replay the same tune, or different tunes. Another eg, Psybermagi has been describing Kyle as using his phone to produce certain effects. He'll need more apps, or perhaps different processing power, to cast more things. KCC had Minsoo sing certain lines of songs, etc.
So in general, we're heading in the right direction. Those of us who have yet to flesh out these aspects, you can start sprinkling them in. I'll let you know when I'll start to invoke the rules (such as greater difficulty to cast magic without a focus).

So, I’ve been thinking on the character, and the physical side of things has kind of won out over the music side. Not that she isn’t into Fleetwood Mac, but just that I gravitated towards the running/athlete side of things.
With that said, maybe I could lean into the physicality of things for producing magic? Practice, practice, practice to make the body a perfect instrument.
I’ve been doing some quietening of her mind to try read some sort of presence in the basement. So maybe meditation and training are how she goes about things?

I feel like Jonathan would gravitate towards art and it's associated equipment for a focus. Painting/Sketching as a a way to harness his evolving magic, using certain colors, types of paint or different media to accomplish his will, using a pencil or paintbrush as a metaphorical 'wand'.

Wren will use whatever has sound ;) Like, she will use a literal instrument some day like a Guitar, a Piano, Drums, etc. But she will also continue to use what she did already, tapping a Rhythm, the Silence of her Headphones, and things like Harmonics, Discord, a Crecendo or even just the sound of a skateboard on asphalt.

Strictly rules-lawyering, a starting PC will need to have 7 instruments, and as your Arete (magic power) grows, you can begin to reduce your dependency on them up to a point where a master mage hardly relies on them.
I see everyone's mentioned thinking of them, on our various threads.
Let's take a broad view of instruments, ie they don't have to all be physical items, the key is a creative combination of them.
So sure, for Wren, tapping a rhythm, putting on or taking off headphones, actually having a musical instruments, hitting certain notes, can all be narratively combined to explain the magic you do.
For Myra, mathematical symbols spoken or written are pretty cool, quoting mathematical formula or science laws, remember to throw in a physical item or two in the mix.
For Jonathan, tracing things in the air, or drawing quickly on a sketchpad, or even dirty fingers smudging graphitti shapes on a surface, all can count.
For KCC, let's develop that physicality idea. Maybe she runs in a certain way, or hops, or stretches, with each contortion creating a different spell effect (some people used to think that different yoga positions produced different spells!), and you can still overlay that with humming or singing of certain tunes or lines.
Keep 'em coming! I guess the key for all these things is that they have to be deliberately enacted.

The last lines of Joe’s character sheet include some notes on paradigm and tools. So far I’m only really concerned about spheres I think he’s got or will look to gain soonish.
This did however give rise to a couple of questions.
1. Most spheres have quite broad applications, more so than some common(?) tools; and it’s not easy to think of some of the suggested tools covering all possible uses of the sphere. (Yes, I have used the tradition books from earlier editions for ideas and background M20 either assumes or fails to provide in as much detail.) For example, weapons are suggested as an Akashic tool for Forces, and for some effects this is easily conceptualised (e.g. hitting things, or flying); for others, less so (e.g. creating soft music). Is there a problem with using different tools for different aspects of a sphere, so long as the delineation is sufficiently clear?
2. Some tools are highly versatile; is there a problem with using the same tool, possibly in different ways, for different spheres? The example I have in mind for this is calligraphy; written on (or carved into) an object it would serve for Matter; pictured in the mind, or drawn in the air, for Spirit.
I’m assuming in either case that development to eschew the need for tools would be done by sphere, rather than by tool.

I think we can creatively go different ways on this.
One mage might associate one sphere with a specific tool, and another sphere with a different tool such as if they wanted to use them in combination, they might employ them both together, something akin to how you were describing what you imagined, eg make a meditation pose to represent Mind work, then write a calligraphic symbol for Matter. Another might see tools as incremental in complexity or power, to cast a low level spell, perhaps all that's needed is a sprinkling of blessed dust and a short phrase, but for something more powerful, a longer chant and a more expensive talisman. Yet another might believe that certain tools resonate with them more than others, because of that, those can be wielded with more range and potency of spheres, leaving the more common and mundane tools to be used to do the easier stuff.
Generally pick something core that relates most significantly to your affinity Sphere (the one that defines you and stems from your Tradition), and then extrapolate from there.
Development typically means being better and better at using fewer and fewer tools to produce more and more effects, and this can mean any creative variation of the above.

Yeah, I see Torrance as mainly an implement user, but maybe using motions for more unusual castings, maybe even vocal components for even more complex castings than that.
I will be consudering which implements to use.

Some of us are getting close to having to confirm Tradition, so here's the list again. Following character generation rules, it's important to pick your affinity sphere, let's use that to guide with Tradition you will belong to. (Don't read too much into their names lol)
• Akashic Brotherhood – Masters of mind, body, and spirit through the Arts of personal discipline.
Affinity Spheres: Mind or Life
• Celestial Chorus – Sacred singers who give a human Voice to the Divine Song.
Affinity Spheres: Prime, Forces, or Spirit
• Cult of Ecstasy – Visionary seers who transcend limitations through sacred experience.
Affinity Spheres: Time, Life, or Mind
• Dreamspeakers – Preservers and protectors of both the Spirit Ways and the Earthly cultures that have been looted, abandoned, and oppressed.
Affinity Spheres: Spirit, Forces, Life, or Matter
• Euthanatoi – Disciples of mortality who purge corruption and bring merciful release from suffering.
Affinity Spheres: Entropy, Life, or Spirit
• Order of Hermes – Rigorous masters of High Magick and the Elemental Arts.
Affinity Spheres: Forces
• Sons of Ether – Graceful saviours of scientific potential.
Affinity Spheres: Matter, Forces, or Prime
• Verbena – Primal devotees of rough Nature and mystic blood.
Affinity Spheres: Life or Forces
• Virtual Adepts – Reality-hackers devoted to rebooting their world.
Affinity Spheres: Correspondence or Forces

And on that note, because this game is all about organically arriving at which spheres and therefore which Traditions you end up with, I had some fun counting all the times your PC used magic, give or take. These results might surprise you!
Kyle: Forces x6, Matter x1, Prime x6
Minsoo Correspondence x3, Life x4, Time x1
Myra: Correspondence x2, Forces x1, Prime x2
Joe: Life x2, Mind x1, Prime x1, Spirit x1
Jonathan: Entropy x1, Spirit x1
Wren: Forces x1, Mind x1, Prime x4
Maybe this actually helps you figure out what your PC's true affinity sphere is, (almost like a lifepath character creation!). Maybe you could consider the relevant Tradition! Have fun with this.

Our bodies strive to recall the harmony our souls knew before we were born.
Dissonance is not the absence of harmony, merely a harmony that needs to be adjusted until the song rings true.
Life's a gift, but most poor bastards never get past the wrapping paper.
I'm speaking to the end of silence, can you hear the thunder yet?
Death isn't just a word to me - it's genesis.
I do not manifest change - I become change.
Onwards and upwards - all or none!
Everything is intertwined, to understand your tears is to understand the sky.
It's all in the code: you, me, the world, everything.
These are the caption quotes for the nine Traditions, see which resonates the most with your character. (If none do, I'll have to look into the Technocracy!)

Fun fact: I liked "I'm speaking to the end of silence, can you hear the thunder yet?" and thought it might represent her scene at home ;) and another fun fact, an AI suggested that Wren with her music isn't that far from Virtual Adepts - not fully sure if I'd agree, but "Everything is Music" and "Everything is Data" might indeed be reconcileable ;)
FWIW I wouldn't mind Wren being confronted with such choices IC - I mean, she is not "obviously born into one of those traditons" anyway, right?
