"I am sure they will understand." The cop says in a not-very-understanding way. "You are helping the police with their enquiries, and this is a murder investigation."

This may well be first you are hearing about a 'murder', and the cops probably should not be speaking about details of their case (and, if it was an animal attack is it really 'murder'?), so they may be watching for a reaction of surprise to this tidbit, one you probably don't need to feign?

What do you do?

"Murder!? It’s only a dog! It was running off leash and being very rowdy and it pushed some people over. I thought you were going to go down there and catch the poor thing before it got hit by a train! What on earth does this have to do with a murder?"

Benji is not actually all that surprised. Max and Alara told him about the body in the park and he figured that the officers might have connected those dots when they started calling in all the reinforcements. But he definitely doesn’t want the police thinking he has anything to do with any of that so he tries to act as surprised and bewildered as possible.

Shakespeare in the park, indeed!

Persephone sniffs the air and realizes she’s not going to be able to help Max on this hunt. She already can’t sense Chaudhry‘s little minion anymore. She turns to Max and sighs deeply. She shakes her head in frustration and says," i’m not going to be of much help until I take care of something and get back and my patron’s good graces. Here… This is my number if you don’t have it. Send me a message when you find where this guy has gone, especially if he goes to his mentor to share what he’s learned! I will be there as quickly as I can. Please. Please don’t lose him. I need this. Thank you Max."

With that, Persephone turns and hurries away from them all to hail a car. As she quickly walks out of the park, she sends a message to Viv, asking if they can meet. She knows she needs to take care of this, even though she is thirsting for revenge.

Max's eyes widen. "Wait, hold up Persephone! I don't have my phone on me! I don't even have my fucking panties! If you're leavin', you gotta at least call Benji and tell him to get my threads to me right fucking now!"

Persephone looks down and realizes for the first time that Max is basically naked under that trenchcoat! The shock of seeing the transformation was so strong that the nakedness didn’t register at first. Now that she’s noticing it, however,… No, I don’t have time for thoughts like that right now! But my word… OK stop, that’s enough! Gotta find Benji…

She mumbles to Max, saying, " Um, right, clothes… Phone. Right. I’ll go see about that. Hang on?"

She walks off to find Benji and/or Max’s clothes. She shoots that text to Viv and will reply later.

Emma stayed just long enough to hear Max and Pers planning their next move. She didn’t want to be part of whatever came next, and it wasn’t like she could contribute anything even if she did, so she quietly excused herself and slipped away.

Stopping by the edge of the park, she pulled out her phone and started looking for any soup kitchens, homeless shelters, or free clinics at Soho and the vicinity. She was determined to call on each one of them. Sarah didn’t have any money when she left, and she doubted she could afford so much as a subway fare. She wanted to think she couldn’t have gotten very far. If she was lucky, maybe she could still find a trace of her.

The cops don't really buy your show of ignorance, but they are also not massively surprised, they have tried to keep the details out of the news, but anyone walking past, the other night, will have seen the activity, and those who found the body were not overtly quiet, so knowing about the investigation does not automatically make one a suspect.

"What did this dog look like?" Your friendly cop asks, not going down into the tunnel, and not giving you permission to leave but also not digging too deep into your story, leaving that for their supervisor. You can only hope said supervisor is someone you can work with, someone like Kenedi would be ideal.

Max's bag of suspect goods weights heavily on your shoulder.

You phone pings back almost immediately with Viv's reply. If you take the time to read it right now it says: "What's wrong?" She has picked up on your agitation.

Benji has —though just barely— left the park, and is talking with the police. Max's duffel-bag —presumably containing her needed clothes— slung over his shoulder.

The local homeless shelters are as helpful as they can be, but none of them have direct information about Sarah that they are willing to share over the phone. Her background of abuse makes her someone they don't want to talk about.

You have seen mention of a 'homeless' and 'beggars' network on your accumulated notes. Maybe, given the supernatural-adjacent-nature of Sarah's case, approaching them will yield better results than trying the mundane route?

What do you do?
OOC:
If you think Emma might know of a member of the Beggars Guild (we only know of Slippery Jim [ref] so far and an unnamed street urchin) you can approach them, you are welcome to create someone new if you want.

Or there might be someone in the shelter system that you can track down information.

If you want to, you can Hit the Streets [ref] with someone like this, or even Put a Face to a Name [ref] (if this is the first time you are encountering them) to see if you know anything juicy that can help (or if you have had dealings with them that might leave either of you in each other's Debts)

Presumably such would be Mortalis. Unless you think you would go to someone else?

Her phone calls led nowhere. With a sigh, she started scrolling through the Administrator’s contacts again as she walked down the street. Most of the names wouldn’t have been of any help; she doubted powerful wizards or vampires would care enough to help her with a a missing person case.

"…Beggers’ Network?" she stopped as she looked upon the names associated with that ‘organization’. It seemed odd that someone like the Administrator would bother with any of them. Maybe there was more to this group than a handful of homeless people and vagrants? None of the entries had phone numbers, which suggested they weren’t exactly influential, but perhaps having eyes and ears on the streets served him in some way.

Still, it was worth a shot. If Sarah has been in and out of shelters, then maybe one of them has seen her. She tucked her phone away and changed direction, walking under her umbrella as she left the main road. She would make a stop at Burger King on her way; Slippery Jim would probably be more talkative on a full stomach.

Persephone texts back to Viv, keeping in mind her request to keep things discrete. She walks quickly across the park toward Benji, holding her phone to her face and whispering a voice to text message. She says, "Hey! So, you know I am a headhunter of sorts, working in HR for my employer. The guy I'd been targeting? Who'd been causing such a fuss and who set me back, so to speak, last weekend? I finally have a line on a face to face. I'm hoping to lock him down and finish the deal. And I was wondering if you wanted to come along, maybe see how things work? I have some very interesting friends who work in the industry, so to speak, to whom I could introduce you as well."

She edits for typos (voice to text is terrible, even on demonic phones) and hits Send. She looks up again and stops short. Benji is talking to cops! She looks down at the abrasions on her knuckles from punching Nefydd and considers her options.

She grimaces at the idea, but calls Wentworth. A receptionist answers -- she can't tell if it's the one she's spoken to before, and she doesn't know if that person is the one she saw when she visited his office, or what. Persephone says, "Tell your boss that I need a distraction for some cops at an address... I'll send it, though I'm sure you're tracking my location. Now would be nice." She doesn't wait for a reply; she just hangs up.

The incessant rain has put a damper on the beggars' general outdoor activities. You have to put some effort into finding where Slippery Jim is hiding out.

What do you have to do to eventually find Slippery Jim.
What is surprising about the location where you meet?

The receptionist makes a slightly indignant sound when you order her around, but you don't give her time to object.

It has been less than a minute, but you see Viv typing a response as you end the call to Wentworth's...

"Yes! I have nothing else to do today. Are these 'special friends'?" Viv asks, presumably meaning 'of the magical sort' and apparently not realising that this might sound different to her colleagues. It is hard to be discrete when your counterpart is so bad at it.

Before you can answer the cop's question there is a terrific growling and accompanying terrified screaming from down the stairs to the underground. The police look in two minds about whether to run away or head down sans a BTP rep.

You have never head such a racket in the tube tunnels... or anywhere else for that matter.

"It was big and sort of shaggy and—oh, good lord! What is that!?" Benji jumps back in fright as the fearsome growls and blood-curdling screams echo up from below. "Are you going to go down there?" he asks the police, anxiously. "It sounds like someone’s in trouble."

He wonders if he should go down there, but he doesn’t have his sword and, if it’s that hellhound again, he really doesn’t think he’ll be any match for it... Maybe he should go get Max? She was looking for the hellhound, after all. He just has to get away from these police…

Emma spent nearly an hour looking through alleys, underpasses, bus stops, the backs of convenience stores, and past the garbage bins, in search of Slippery Jim. The Administrator’s notes weren't much help. All she had was name, and a few vague hints about his "usual haunts."

Her feet were aching after spending so long out in the rain, and her coat was damp and heavy. She sighed to herself and admitted defeat, as she turned back toward home.

She reached Bridle Lane, brick walls close on either side, and walked right past the ongoing renovation right next door to her appartment building. She was just passing the scaffolding when someone stepped out from beneath it and blocked her way. He was gaunt, wearing several patchy coats, and reeked of urine, sewage, and sweat.

"!!!!"

Emma took a reflexive step backward, nearly nearly slipping on the wet pavement, at the sight of him. 'Jim', for his part, took his time dragging on his cigarette, as if her little startle had been part of the entertainment.

Persephone chuckles and rolls her eyes as she begins to type a reply. "They're an unusual bunch, that's for sure, but you'll like them when you meet them. Here, I'll send you my address..."

She looks around and sends the address of a nearby business across the street from the park, so she doesn't have to loiter in front of the cops.

"You've been looking for me, good looking?" Slippery Jim says, a bit of smarminess but no threat in his voice. It does not seem like he followed you, and his appearance right outside your home might suggest he knows who you are.

The nearest business is, of course, The Lanesborough... but they may know you and might even still have some of your luggage... you never checked out the last time you were with them. But there are plenty of other spots you can meet, depending on what your plans are.

Max is still experiencing a case of nudity (or is is 'flasher syndrome' with that trench-coat) but surely can't hang around the park much longer if she plans to follow Nefydd.

While none of the police seem inclined to actually go down the stairs and do something about the situation, they are all suddenly very busy barking into their radios and ordering each other around and generally pretending to be useful. One of them ushers Benji further back from the stairs, out of the way.

He wonders if he might be able to simply slip away while they’re all focused on the screaming and the snarling. He sidles back a few steps toward the park and, when he thinks no one is looking, turns around and makes a break for the trees.
