Chapter 7: Blue Sky, Green Earth

Jul 29, 2025 9:55 am
You are nearing the fork in the river when in the distance you can see a circle of ancient rectangular stone monoliths. Hundreds of small piles of stones and bones wait outside the gathering circle, each painted or carved with dots, spirals, and lines.
OOC:
It will be a DC 20 Religion check to identify the monoliths.

As Artesia and Tomas gets closer to study the monoliths, they suddenly see a Griffon swoop down from on high. It snatches them in their claws and carries them towards the southwest. As suddenly as they were carried up, they suddenly find themselves back on the ground. It must have been a vision.

As you do, two creatures float out of the ground. "Return him!" they moan in an etheral voice.
OOC:
Artesia and Tomas, roll me a DC 22 Basic Will save. If you fail, you take the rolled damage (half on success, double on a crit fail).

Then you can all roll initiative. Anyone who beats their initiative of 22 can act immediately.

Tomas moves closer, and the spirit reacts by pummeling him with more stones. (13 damage)

"Return him!" the other sprit calls out and moves closer, before sending rocks flying, attacking everyone except Iroven.

Tomas raises his shield, stones bouncing off harmlessly. While Artesia is ready this time, and dodges the stones easily. Similarly Koram and Haitih is at the edge of the telekinetic storm, and can merely step out of the way.

Iroven moves up, and the other poltergeist sends a blast towards him as a reaction. The stone hit him in the side (17 damage).

Finally up close, he lets loose with his sword, it connects, flying through the halfway intangible creature. It seems to hurt, though far less than it would a corporeal creature.
OOC:
They have a reaction whenever someone strides within 10 feet of them, though both have spent their reaction for now so Koram, Haitih and Artesia can ignore it. The sword do less damage, you can tell they have a resistance of 5. The mentioned characters are up.

Luckily Artesia is quick to send positive energy around her, both healing her allies as well as burning your foes. While they are able to shake off the worst effect of the blast, they scream in pain.

One of the poltergeist sends a new flurry of stones around itself. Iroven is able to withstand the onslaught, but Tomas is only saved from a critical wound by his shield (5 damage).

Artesia takes a big rock in the side (21 damage) as does Koram (19 damage), while Haitith dodges.

Then it follows up with another stone thrown directly at Iroven, though it misses him.

With the flanking provided by Iroven, Tomas is able to stab one of the poltergeist twice, and while it is somewhat resistant to the damage, he strikes hard enough that it still feels it.

The other poltergeist sends another blast of stones around it. Iroven takes some stone in his back (11 damage), as does Tomas (15 damage) and Koram (10 damage).

The rest avoids the worst of it.

Iroven isn’t one to be outshined by Tomas, and swings out with a mighty swing that critically damages the creature. As it is struck, it dissipates, leaving behind a small goo of ectoplasm.

It takes a few days to trek up into the mountains. You are uncertain what you're looking for, but on the third day Iroven notices the skeleton of a cave bear, you can see it has taken damage from big claws, he is also able to see white feathers on the ground nearby.

You can in fact tell that this is what is known as a northern griffon. Though they are very similar to the regular kind, they do have hindquarters of a lynx and the upper body of a snowy owl. You know that wild griffons rely on their powerful wings to hold them aloft and their keen eyesight to spy out prey. The speed with which they plunge toward the ground and snatch up victims is astonishing. They often tear apart a kill's flesh with razor-sharp beaks but not before alighting to secluded location where they can enjoy their meal without interruption. Griffons hunting to feed their chicks are more cautious, tearing apart prey rather than risking bringing a living creature back to their nests.

You can also recall that they are known for their terrifying shrieks, that can make even the bravest warrior think twice about fighting one of them.
Sep 3, 2025 4:36 pm
Koram bends down and brings Haitith close. "I'll keep us protected with some magic, friend." He casts a spell to ensure safety if Haitith is hurt too badly, knowing he can bring his friend back from the Astral plane after the trouble has passed.

Standing, he addresses the group. "If this creature relies on sight to find its prey, I might be able to help. I have a spell that can envelop up to five of us in a cloak of invisibility, but it does only last ten minutes. It would be best for us to catch the creature on the ground, if possible."
OOC:
He casts Summoner's Precaution, then if the others agree the spell is helpful, he'll keep Shared Invisibility ready to cast.

"We might need to passivity them for a bit if the following come through this way. Otherwise lets leave them along and make sure they don't hunt us while we scout the area" Tomas replies
Sep 9, 2025 5:27 pm
Iroven looked at the griffin's nest, wondering what to do about it. "Has anyone ever tamed a wild griffin?" He looked at Artesia, "Do you perhaps have any spell to communicate with these beasts?" He then turned to Koram and said, "I don't know how we can deal with this. Maybe we can scare them away, perhaps?"
Sep 10, 2025 2:17 am
"If I had time to rest and prepare, perhaps. But as it stands now, I have nothing."
Sep 10, 2025 5:21 am
"Well, if that is an option, Artesia, we could camp for the night and give it a shot. Griffons are predators, but I have heard they are rather smart creatures. If we had a way of speaking with them, we might resolve this without a fight. They could, perhaps be swayed to leave our Following in peace and even harry our enemies when they eventually give pursuit."
Sep 11, 2025 11:18 am
OOC:
So the plan is to back off and try some spells the following day. Which spell are you thinking off. I know Speak With Animals is a primal spell in 2nd edition, but there may be other spells I haven't thought of that could do similar things.
Sep 24, 2025 9:40 am
OOC:
You would know that Griffons are animals with an animal intellect. Though stubborn can be trained, and they can use canny tactics when needed. Ideas to deal with them could be a Calm spell, or possibly just using Nature to calm them.
Sep 26, 2025 2:17 am
OOC:
I was still living in the land of 1e, forgetting that speak with animals wasn't available to her. In that case, I think that using Nature to calm them is a viable effort.

You are able to calm the griffon enough for it to return to its nest, though it watches you warily. You can see it guarding eggs, so that would usually make them more agressive.

You cannot recall what deity the symbol belongs to, but you can remember than man you saw in your vision wearing a the same symbol on chain around his neck.

Artesia shakes her head to clear it. "A man, wearing this symbol, standing before the standing stones," she says breathlessly.

"Perhaps returning this symbol to the standing stones will be what is needed to quell the undead spirits," Koram suggests.
Oct 4, 2025 7:51 pm
Iroven nods, "If we don't know what faith this symbol belongs to then that is what we must do. May be it will reveal something?"
Oct 5, 2025 3:35 pm
The journey back to the standing stones is far easier than the journey into the mountains as well as you now know the way.

Once again the poltergeists rise as you come near, but holding out the amulet they stop and regards you. They move aside and stand by and watch your next move.
Oct 7, 2025 7:09 am
OOC:
Are the stones arranged in a circle? If so, I'm thinking approaching and laying the amulet at the center of the circle makes sense. Or otherwise, is there an obvious area of focus to the area - like a stone dais or something?
Oct 7, 2025 1:14 pm
OOC:
It looks something like this. So the spot in the middle would work.

As you leave the amulet, the angry spirits sink into the ground with a happy sigh and another ghostly shape manifests.

"Thanks," the ghost says. "I am Jodren, you have done the spirits a great service today. You have given rest to the Lea of Honored Souls."
Oct 8, 2025 1:38 pm
Iroven watched the ghost rise and then listened to it. "It is good to be of service in aiding these souls. What exactly happened here. May I ask, who you are?"
Oct 9, 2025 4:43 am
"Yes, it pleases us to quell these restless spirits," Koram agrees. "And what can you tell us of the Lea of Honored Souls?"
Oct 9, 2025 7:59 am
"I am the caretaker..." the ghost says and gets a wistful look on his face. "Or at least I was. Until the griffons took me away from here."

"I was once a burning mammoth, but when they decided to abandon their migratory route I chose to stay behind and tend the Lea. The Lea was our way to honor the spirits whenever we passed. We came here to honor those who passed. Each of the stones in the middle here represent a hunter that died in the service of the following."
Oct 12, 2025 2:17 am
"Well, now you may be again. It is a great service, living or dead, to honor our ancestors." Koram bows his head deeply to the ghost. "We are happy to have returned you to your post."
Oct 13, 2025 9:26 am
"Since the locals have learned to stay away, I was worried no more visitors would come, since the last Burning Mammoth hunter was through here," he says. "Again I thank you for your service."
Oct 14, 2025 12:44 am
"Our Following may come this way. We once were of the Burning Mammoths, but they have strayed from what they once were. The Broken Tusk, we are called. We still honor the ancestors as they should. You are welcome, great spirit. We wish you peace and rest."
OOC:
Ready to move on?
Oct 14, 2025 9:52 am
"Well you should know there was another Burning Mammoth that came through here many years ago. A traveler cursed by a flaming lamp and bound to a demon of darkness. He avoided the waymarkers and went north east instead. I do not know where he went after that, but I know he left the valley through the white dragon's den. The visitor’s passage changed the valley: plants grew rampant, weather warmed, and winter never came again. After that, the dragon had the flaming lamp."

It takes off a ring and hands it to Koram. "Hope this can help your travels."

As the ghost disperses the ring hardens in Koram's hand becoming a solid ivory ring.
OOC:
The ring is a Spiritsight Ring.
Oct 14, 2025 1:32 pm
Iroven listened to the ghost and looked at the ring curiously. "Another Burning Mammoth with a flaming lamp and a bound demon? Is this the one who is has the valley under control?"

One the spirit vanishes, Koram holds his palm open for all to see the ring. "With it comes the knowledge of what it does. The wearer can sense incorporeal creatures to some extent, even if they desire to remain hidden."
OOC:
It would make sense for the PC with the best Perception rating to wear this, I think, until something better comes alone for them. Koram's Perception is +9

"Hmm ..." Tomas says as he examines the ring "Maybe this Artesia style?"
Oct 17, 2025 1:01 am
Artesia examines the ring gingerly, as though she does not feel that she is worthy of the honor. Still, she takes it and slides it onto her left ring finger.
Oct 17, 2025 4:36 am
Koram nods. "It suits you, Artesia. Now Let's get moving while we have daylight left."

Starday, Sarenith 11th

Early in the afternoon you come upon a small area where all the animals have died from intense cold. Icicles still hang from the trees and the grass is damp.
Oct 18, 2025 6:21 am
"What do you make of this?" Koram asks the others, "This seems more than a natural cold, to have caught the animals in the open like this, without them finding cover. Magic, you think?"

You walk on for a couple of hours before Tomas is able to hear some voices. Following the sound they lead to a clearing and as you get closer everyone can hear the voices. Sounds like someone arguing

"You do it!" a male voice says.

"Why me?!" another voice, this one female, says.

"You drew the short straw," a third voice replies. This one is female as well.

Koram gets closer and see a male halfling in breastplate arguing with a female half-elf in leather armor and a kitsune in blue robes. They don't seem to hear Koram but turn towards Haitith and Tomas. They all bear the marking of the Mendevian Crusade.

The halfling draws a longsword and turns around. "Wh-who goes there?!"
Oct 31, 2025 7:56 am
Koram hangs back, as it seems his position is not yet given up to the strangers. 'Haitith, he says telepathically to his friend, 'Speak with them and let me be your eyes and ears.'

Haitith steps out of the foliage into view yet staying at a distance. Koram enters his mind to be one with the eidolon's senses. "You are meant no harm, I was merely curious at your presence." Koram uses his mind to speak through Haitith, giving him - he hopes - the right words to say.

The half-elf grabs for a short sword at her belt, but while simultaneously back off, she fumbles it and it drops into the ground.

"I'll take my chances with the ghost," the kitsune utters before her arms start moving to cast a spell. As she does a translucent shield starts floating in the air around her.
Nov 1, 2025 2:37 pm
Iroven went out in the front and screamed, "Wait! What are you all doing?" He stands in front with full armor and showing the crusader pattern design in his breastplate. "We are not the minions of White Dragon. I was a crusader once."
OOC:
I don't know if we have detailed the backstory of Iroven before, but since he is the only one wearing full plate armor, I think I remember making him an ex-crusader. Someone who got lost in these frozen lands, broken and injured, and the Broken Tusk nursed him back to full health and took him in. That's why he fights in full plate, whereas the Broken Tusk (I guess) rarely use metal armor. So, I don't know which company or squad Iroven belonged to, but I think he remembers his life back on Mendev.

The three young soldiers do not lower their weapons, but at least seem willing to talk. "What are you doing out here?" the halfling asks Iroven.

"And in such strange company," the elf adds.
Nov 5, 2025 6:19 am
Iroven looked at the halfling and said, "I know that you are all probably trying your best to survive in these frost-covered lands, but this is not the way proud crusaders of Mendev should behave. My friends here are the company of Broken Tusk, who have mastered and survived these desolate lands for years. Without their aid, I would have died, a frozen corpse buried and forgotten under the snow. Yet, their kindness has given me a second chance. You can see that I am here, and my oath stands for doing good wherever I can. So here I am, helping the Broken Tusk survive their enemies. The dragon that you are talking about—we are not its minions, and we are trying our best to avoid it. But, with your help, we might stand a chance fighting that creature. What have you all been doing here? Are there more crusaders here? What news of Mendev?"
Nov 5, 2025 1:31 pm
The three young soldiers look at each other, until the half-elf finally speaks. "We are under the command of Commander Montgrim. We have a camp to the south of here."

"Hush!" the kitsune says. "We don't know if they are allies. Don't go around announcing our business."

The half-elf shakes her head. "I am Belguese. The worrywart here is Ray."

"And I'm Arvis," the halfling adds. "We can't say we have words from home. We've been stuck in this valley for what seems like forever."

"There's a spirit in the tree. We've been sent to dispatch it," Belguese explains. "If we are to expect your help in dealing with a dragon, I'm sure a spirit will be no trouble. Right?"

Arvis starts nodding its head. "Yeah, yeah. You need to prove yourself before we can take you to the commander."

"What are the two of you talki..." Ray says, but is interrutped by a half-elven elbow in the side. Belguese then leans over and whispers something to her companion. Ray's eyes light up by whatever she's told in the whisper, and starts nodding along as well.
Nov 5, 2025 4:42 pm

"When we walk out, not a scratch on us, they'll think we're the greatest fighters they've ever seen. But we all will be the ones laughing." He grins at them. "And I'd still like to know how we can encourage them to behave better - what did they do that earned your ire, exactly?"
Dec 17, 2025 1:33 pm
"They were there," one of the leshys replies with a shrug. "We haven't had anyone to play with in a while."

"And they cut down trees for their camp," one of them adds. "And they didn't ask for permission."

Dec 20, 2025 5:44 pm
The creature is indeed a Dryad. She smiles at Iroven. "You have nothing to apologize for. They didn't ask, but nor did they know to ask," she says. "Since my little ones decided to prank them rather than inform them."

"They wouldn't have listened anyway," one of the leshys mutters under its breath.

"I thought I'd nip this in the bud," Daphelia chuckles from her own pun before continuing. "Before anyone got hurt. I am sure we can share the forests' bounty. In fact you have treated my little one with respect, so I feel bad that I have to beg you for a favor."

"This tree is has a twin on the other side of the valley where my brother Bargott lives. Due to the trees connection I have always been able to feel his presence," she touches one of the roots and it moves ever so slightly. "Lately however, I feel nothing. I suspect this is due to the valley falling outside the sway of the seasons, which has caused it to become cursed."

She opens her hand and reveals a seed. "This is a seed from the elder tree. Would you please deliver this to him so he can know he's not alone."
Dec 22, 2025 4:32 am
Koram reaches out a hand and takes the seed. "Our travels shall carry us that way in any case. I see no reason not to deliver this on your behalf and assure your brother that your thoughts are with him."

A couple of days after leaving the mendevian crusaders you reach the edge of the forest and come upon a battlefield. Some of the bodies seems to belong to the Mendevian crusades, while some seems to be the necromancers you have seen sign of. Some of them looks to have been in various stages of decay, possibly zombie soldiers.

Your looking is suddenly interrupted by a loud sound coming from over a nearby hill, followed by a voice in the distance. "Stay back foul beast." Finally you hear the familiar sound of weapons on weapons.
