Why settle for a songbird when you can have a full choir that they've trained?

"We would of course compensate you," Ramank says. "We have many treasures between us. But maybe you would like to become a partner in the operah. If you lend us Oriole, we would give you some percentage of the ticket. Imagine. The first operah with a dragon patron. The tickets would sell like hot cakes."

Izhkarial considers all of your offers. "Hmm, yes. I am imagining it now. It could be quite the delight to see Oriole on stage once again. Especially in an opera of which I would be the patron. I suppose I can try to find another pet to take home with me. Perhaps one that won't cost me so many of my fey minions. I don't suppose any of you would like to volunteer?"

She casts one last appraising eye over you all as if sizing you up for potential pets. Then she spreads her wings. "Very well. Oriole is yours to do with as you wish. We can discuss the terms of my patronage at a later date, but for now, take these as a down payment for my investment." The dragon reaches into a pouch slung over her shoulder, removing a set of greater bands of force and a singing shortbow that she offers to you. She then departs into the sky, calling out in Fey to any surviving minions that she's changed her mind and that they're to leave Petrel's Perch at once.

Soon after the dragon departs, the door to the adjoining room opens. "Gradmama, are you fighting with the birds again? I told you, you can’t win against seagulls—" comes a clear voice as an androgynously beautiful person with feathered tail and a serpentine tail emerges, clear evidence of their ganzi heritage. This, at last, is Oriole!

The singer suddenly stops as they see you, taking stock of the scene. After a beat, they say, "You know, darlings, I don’t think I invited any of you. Wherever you all came from, I suggest you go back there. Shoo."

Bekassine just grumbles "Does no one appreciate the trouble we've gone through to get here? Oh no, they either tell us to leave, or try to kill us."

Aurelia raises a hand to shush Bekassine and then addresses Oriole.

"I am surprised that you would not entertain being a star in what will surely be one of the most famous operas ever produced."

With that tasty morsel dangled in the air, Aureli awaits the singer's response.

Ramank bows deeply. "A pleasure to meet you," he says, and awaits her answer to Aurelia.

OOC:
Horace is good on health, thank you!
Horace raises an eyebrow. "We recognize you came here to get away from everything, but my friends are right. We come from Kintargo, producers on an opera the likes of which have not been seen in ages, and we made no small effort to find you, Oriole. We come to appeal for your talent, on behalf of all who love art."
Aug 25, 2025 12:34 pm
Oriole says, carefully maintains their expression as they reply. "Well, the remote island should have given you a clue, but darlings, I am retired. The only things the stage holds for me anymore are predatory producers, grueling rehearsals, and selfish managers who crush any actual creativity out of you. I’m tired of it. There’s no joy in stage performance. No freedom. Unless you can convince me that your production will be different, I’m afraid you’re out of luck, and I’ll have to send you on your way in search of another star."

Oriole ponder for a moment, then presents to you a challenge. If you can perform an improvised short play to remind them of the joys of the stage, Oriole will come out of retirement "just this once." They escort you to a nearby room, a cozy theater that features five blue velvet chairs. The ornately carved wood-paneled walls evoke the feel of pre-Civil War Chelaxian opera halls. A stage flanked by colonnades is to the north, its deep-purple curtains closed and embroidered in silver with swirling constellations. A small piano has been placed in the northeast.

Oriole takes a seat in front of the stage, crossing their legs. "Alright, here is your prompt. You are members of a family at a dinner party bickering over an inheritance. I leave the rest up to you."
OOC:
Encourage your players come up with fun characters for each of their PCs to play in this improv and to plan out the details of their family and the nature of the inheritance. While they do so, Oriole (with the aid of the estate’s phantasmal minions) gathers up a collection of props and costumes for the PCs to use. The phantasmal minions also set up a table and enough chairs to seat the party on the stage.

This scene plays out over the course of eleven 5-minute rounds. During each round, every player will need to choose one of three specific skill check options to attempt to earn Victory Points for that round. A PC can opt to not take significant part that round and attempt no skill check if they wish, thereby avoiding a potential critical failure at the cost of not having a chance to earn any Victory Points for that round.
SET THE SCENE
Overcome: DC 30 Performance to introduce oneself dramatically, DC 32 Theater Lore to draw upon established tropes, or DC 34 Society to bring verisimilitude to the complexities of inheritance arguments

Oriole sits back and watches as you introduce your characters and the nature of the inheritance you're bickering over.

I like this very much for Bekassine, lol, since this isn't her skill set. I'm thinking Bekassine can play the deceased, or like, the executor of the will. That will explain why she is talking less then everyone else.

OOC:
Same for Ramank. Don't have any of the required skills, so I would need a natural 20 to even upgrade it to a normal success (and a 14 or less would be a critical failure).

OOC:
The skills are different for each of the rounds, so you can still have a character active in the scene and contribute later during rounds in which you have the appropriate skills. You don't just have to be a corpse! :D

alright then, lets see how this goees
"I guess I'll be the grieving widow," Bekassine says timidly "That should provide a bit of drama. she looks down and Fox gives her what appears to be an affirmative nod

Without further ado, Aurelia, who had adorned herself in a matriarch's clothing, swoops onto the scene, arms floating above, as she descends upon Bekassine.

"Oh my poor, poor dear! What a terrible burden to bear!" Her voice is raised and frightfully dramatic. Snapping her fingers into the air, she calls forth a fictitious servant. "Bring water and wine for this poor widow!" Turning back to "the widow", Aurelia, her cape swirling, executes a perfect pirouette, followed by another. She knows it must wow Oriole, and she smiles at her, albeit a little smugly.

"I'll be the adobted son," Ramank shrugs, realizing a kobold snout is hard to hide in make up. "And Yarth here could be my drinking buddy that I've brought to everyone's consternation."

Then he reacts to Aurelia's line. "Bring some of that for me as well," he says in his most condesending tone. Then he leans over to whisper to Yarth, though loud enough to be heard by all, but making it clear it is a whisper in the play. "If I'll have to listen to my family all night I'll need more than one bottle!"

"Come now," Horace says to Aurelia, "Your silly game of kindness toward our sister-in-law is beneath you. I've heard how you've spoken of her. We all have, at least most of us. Do yourself a favor and stop." He takes a pretend sip of an invisible glass of wine. "We are all here for two reasons: to grieve, and to ensure the will is carried out honestly. There is, of course, a will - I saw to it myself. As a jurist, I could never have allowed my dear brother to live without one. Not with his fortune at stake."

"Let's not forget, who my beloved was descended from. There could be some artwork at stake also." She goes on to tell them a tale they would have undoubtedly heard many times before, with detailed lineage, about how her husband was related to a famous artist from the past.

Do we make up the famous play or work of art or is it something we've encountered and already know?

@Windyridge, your character would probably know of it in-game, but as a player, feel free to make it up in the context of the game world. :)
