I don't know what Varin could do tohelp in this.
He is more of a bodyguard than anything else.

Heads up, I am going to be in the mountains with bad reception for a full week. :/

I'll try to keep up with reading and posting if it resumes, I just can't promise results.

EDIT: So far so good, I've been able to check the forum multiple times a day.

Hey everyone, firstly super sorry for the unannounced hiatus. I don't have a very good excuse aside from the general business of family and work life getting the better of me. That being said, I have to formally say I can't keep this going with the schedule initially agreed upon. There's simply too many things demanding my time/competing for my interests.

The way I see it, we have a few paths forward:

1) End it here, say good work everyone, its been fun. If you're interested, I can give everyone the bones of what was going to happen, maybe answer questions but the game itself would be done.

2) Take a break with an undetermined restart date.

3) Continue on but significantly reduce expectations. It'd essentially be an as you can get around to it basis.

I have doubts whether those last two would survive (at least with the current party make up) but it's a possibility.

Let me know what everyone would prefer.

Regardless of outcome, thank you everyone for putting up with my shenanigans. At the very least I hope I inspired some sort of interest in the setting itself. I really enjoyed getting to share it with you.

1) It has been a good run. :)

Sadly, I too must vote 1. I type only for myself, it’s hard for me to maintain focus and interest in lieu of consistency and momentum. I think I’d be doing a disservice to try slogging it out, so to type.
I emphasize ‘sadly’, bc I really enjoy this game. But it’s all good, all understandable.
Hope everyone’s well today. :)

I'll go with 1. Lots of fun. I'll be up for other adventures in the future if they end up happenin'.

I too go with Choice #1 and that is not done easily or lightly. My main reason is because I am struggling to keep up, and engage to my own satisfaction for the RP I originally intended, far more than I anticipated.

It was an excellent run, I am grateful to all of you and especially to (you) our GM for all the attention to mood and detail and vivid NPCs and historical lore in the brooding Midnight setting.

I absolutely want to know the outline of what was in store for us though! I need details.

Questions like...

(a) What was the best case scenario to unfold in this sacred dolmen of standing stones that Kaelith led us to?[/b] (And what was the worst possible outcome?)

(b) What "weapon" was that "starfall" foretelling and who would most likely wield it-----OR was the nature of what we were meant to discover something more complex and versatile than a weapon to polish and wield in battle?

(c) How would our discovery have helped strike a decisive blow against the almost total dominion over Aryth by the forces of Shadow?

I say 1 also. I'm a bit sad it went this way, but it was very fun while it lasted. Thanks for having me.

A. The Dolmen was a puzzle. I had grand ambitions for the puzzle, but those were getting whittled down to some skill checks...

You were meant to solve the puzzle, and depending on well you solved it, would face a guardian or series of guardians.
Best case scenario. The guardian acknowledges you, you complete a short ritual and you recieve the first shard.
Worst case scenario. You don't solve the puzzle, super guardian comes out and either kills you or scares you away.
There's middle ground there between single combat and group combat.

If you overcame the guardian you'd receive the first shard.

B & C. The McGuffins, or "Shards", were essentially upgrades to your characters. Each was attuned to your heroic path. They functioned similarly to covenant weapons, with powers and passive boosts that kicked in at level increments. There would've been six total. Upon obtaining all six, they combined to form a " Mirror." The mirror would essentially be a means of communication beyond the veil. The entity you would speak to beyond the veil would instruct you in how to "pierce" it. The reason even Izrador himself could not yet was because it couldn't be done from one side. It'd have to be ‘pinched.’ The mirror, formed overtime by Aryth itself, would allow communications and instructions on a spell to cast on your side, with the same spell being cast on the other side, to pierce a hole in the veil. In order to cast this spell, the mirror would have to be destroyed. While the physical shards of the mirror would combine to form the mirror itself, its powers would be bonded to each party member's soul. Casting the spell would essentially be the party erasing themselves for the greater good. No resurrection, no afterlife, complete and total erasure.

Once the spell was cast, the veil would be pierced, your characters would never get to feel the influence of the true gods but their presence would immediately be felt by everyone on Aryth, including Izrador. It would be a bittersweet moment of triumph and hope. The beginning of a 'New Dawn' after a long dark Midnight. The war wouldn’t be over. But Aryth would have a real fighting chance. And more importantly, the back up would have arrived.

One fact that you would not learn until the very end, is that Izrador would only be feigning resistance to your efforts. In secret, he would be manipulating things behind everyone’s backs, including his own minions, to ensure your success. Because something that is often overlooked in the lore is that Izrador himself wants to escape. He’s separated from his physical body, he’s also trapped, and he hates it. Him syphoning the magic of Aryth is an attempt to secure enough power to pierce the veil himself. So he wants you to win, but he can’t be upfront about it.

That is SO AWESOME!

Did you have an idea of how many shards we would need? One for each PC? Also, just curious about what kind of upgrades the shards might have given.
Sep 24, 2025 5:50 pm
It'd be however many party members we had. Just so everyone would get some shinies. I planned on doubling them up after the second one, so if the number varied it wouldn't effect the story. So It'd be, gain 1, gain 1, gain 1 or 2, gain 1 or 2. For a total of 4 to 6.

I can give the specifics to you once I get home to my notes.

Sorry for the delay. Here's the one I was working on for you. It's not 100% dialed in, yours was planned to be one of the last, but as an idea:

SHARD #5 · "BLOOD OF TITANS" - minor artifact

Stat Block
Property Effect
Titanic Surge 1/day, swift action – Bearer gains enlarge person (self only, 5 rounds) and +2 morale bonus on Strength checks.
Mighty Throw When enlarged, bearer may hurl massive rocks (treat as improvised thrown weapon, 2d6 + Str; range 20 ft.).
Attunement If Heroic Path is Giantblooded, bearer gains +2 enhancement bonus to Strength at all times and may reroll one failed strength save per day.
Hidden Spark Innate; undetectable to Astirax/detect magic. DC 25 Spellcraft or Knowledge (arcana) after 1 min study to discern.
Key Fragment Fifth of six star-shards. When all fragments unite, they form the Starfall Lens (artifact; full rules appear in Act V).

The last couple entries, Hidden Spark and Key Fragment were common across all Shards.

Mostly just saying, if you recycle the concept, I would touch it up.

My only note would be that mighty throw deals less damage with less range than Rock Throwing which also allows giant rocks if you have the size to support it. (And Rock Throwing doesn't treat them as improvised.)

Mostly just saying, if you recycle the concept, you might wanna touch up that ability if it's for the Giantblooded character.

Yea, like I said, not dialed in. Would've iterated.
Sep 28, 2025 6:06 pm
I love it conceptually tbh. Hmu if you run something else sometime.

Same here! :)

Sure thing. If no one has anything else I'll shut er down soon.

Apologies once more for the abrupt end.

Thanks again everyone. I really enjoyed it.
