I mean, I would think it'd be pretty clear dragon A won't get the chance to burn us to bits if Dragon B is going to immediately prevent that from happening.
I also give us, as PCs, credit for being marginally smarter than that -- you find a singular dragon.

Since I doubt we slept through hours of an assault, we have huge swaths of the city burning down in very short order. That suggests to me that there pretty much won't be a city by morning. Those people need help now, or there won't be people to help later.
