I agree with witchdoctor. Option 3 seems to be the most accommodating to everyone's tastes. I normally prefer to make my own character, but a pregen made by someone with expertise with the system and understanding of their own campaign touchstones could persuade me away. I haven't actually played or ran Fabula Ultima before, even though I own all of the books for it.

I personally would also agree with option 3, I usually make my own characters, though Id definitely have to brush up on fabula ultima as it has been a minute

As I don't have the book and want to learn the system, creating a new character is something I definitely want to try. Don't care much for pre-gens. There seems to be a free quickstart available (or "press start" as they called it), so I'll get that to check what's what.

I'd be interested if it's not too late to throw my hat into the ring. I'm familiar enough with Fabula Ultima to make my own character. Based on your pitch I'd be interested to see what this game becomes, and how the characters evolve and grow.

I'd prefer to go through chargen with you, so Option 2 sounds best. I'm not against the idea of others playing pregens if that's what they want, I just don't think they're necessary as a template/blueprint/example since you're already on-hand to explain things and make suggestions.

Super not too late. I'm not even ready to start, so you can definitely see where this rabbit hole goes.

I think now is a good time to give a brief on what the system is, and then provide a look at character creation. My intention is not for each of you to make a character in this thread, but I am open to anyone presenting talking points on what the system brings to mind, positive or negative. We can then get into real character creation when the game page opens.

If there is a "win condition" here, it might be to create a memorable and dramatic story, and enjoy the presence and creative spark of everyone present.
Love this, and will be quoting it in the future 😀All of that sounds good. Do you think there will be much going back and forth between the real world and the hidden world?

Would you say that the mindset/personality of each character notably changes between worlds such that the fantasy self can go so far as to be an alternate personality,or will the mundane person remain themselves even if they have a notably different appearance and role in the fantasy worlds?

Also
Quote:
All magic in your homeworld is thought to be gone, suppressed and destroyed long ago, to the point that almost all of you (or perhaps all) believed it to be fictional before finding your first fantasy world. The powers of creativity, intent, and passion are tools of the elite, harnessed into a shape that is easy to wield, but cannot easily upset the balance that sustains the rich and influential.
Are these "powers of creativity, intent, and passion" metaphorical,or literally a constrained form of magic?

Early on, no. I expect the first fantasy world to take some time, give you a chance to acclimate. You won't be able to go back home until you figure out how, or are forced to, after all. Once you're back, and know a bit more about how this works, the pace of travel between worlds will pick up. I anticipate players might do a lot of quick world hopping later to get the benefits of such, but that may not happen. We'll see.

This is a great question, and I would love to see someone explore it. However, it will not be enforced. I expect that some players will lean hard into "fantasy self isn't the real me, it's just a disguise", while others will want the pathos of "which one is the real me?" or "why bother being my old self?". There is some interesting potential behind discovering strength and skill with violence in the fantasy world, only to come home and realize you don't have it there, or only have a faint semblance of it.

As for the question of magic,do the elite still have it in the mundane world in a constrained form? Like materia in Final Fantasy VII or similar. Or is it lost to even them?

I might have been decorative in my description. When I described magic as "creativity, intent, and passion", I was asserting that those things are inherently magic, that magic relies on those things. So in the Homeworld, those things still exist as you know them, but the visible "magic" (the flash, the spells, the wizard robes) have been stripped away. The elite make use of creatives, the willful, and the passionate as tools in their organizations, but have constrained them to forms and functions that will not threaten the power structure.

The main form of magic you will see in the mundane Homeworld is the geocaching app and the portals it connects to.

Alright,I get it now.

I think I have a clear picture of the kind of character I'm going to play in terms of backstory and characterization, but I'll save that for later.

When I return home from work tonight, I will put together a write-up about the rest of character creation, and once we've got people on board, I can put together a thread and formalize the creation process.

I really love the juxtaposition of the two worlds in the premise. The characters learning lessons and acquiring bravery in the fantasy world that encourages them to take a stand in their homeworld is an inspiring concept.

Stoked about everything so far! I've got a couple ideas, but nothing firm yet as I'm interested in seeing who wants to share an origin/relationship in the real world.

This is one of the things about this story that interests me the most! Curious how everybody will role play this. Will they play a jock that becomes a master of magic? Will they play a soccer mom that becomes a powerful night? Will they play a nerd that becomes a bigger nerd!?
