[OOC] Character Creation Discussion

Aug 16, 2026 10:11 pm
Discuss your concepts and any questions here..

FYI, the custom sheet can be found HERE.

I'm thinking of having a dedicated thread in the People thread for each character to keep info, notes and related rolls together. Thoughts?

Campaign entry on Savaged.us here....

Thanks for the invitation. I've run Savage Rifts twice but not played it. (The GM curse, am I right?)

My usual approach is to let the others choose first because there are so many great frameworks to choose from. However in the interest of getting the conversation started, I'm kind of interested in either a True Atlantean Undead Slayer (from the Atlantis campaign book, if available) or a MARS headhunter techno-warrior.

Thanks for the offer of dedicated threads for the characters. It's a great idea for a long game as a place we can post notes or even links to important events.

Welcome! That's one reason I wanted to have you in the game. to hopefully break that curse. :)

And yes, all the books are available so the Undead Slayer would be viable. :)

I think character threads are a good idea. We can make our table rolls there.

I've poked around with a Burster and a Dragon Hatchling idea. For the later, it's unclear how the Born a Hero seeing rule interacts with the delayed starting choices that the dragon has.

Hey everyone, thanks for the invite Knighthawke!

Agree with character threads, that's worked well in the past.

Regarding character, was initially thinking of bringing back a burster I had briefly played in a different rifts game, but there indeed are so many other neat frameworks to try. I'll take at look at the other IFs and let y'all know.

Any word from Crodacus?

I completely agree about there being so many interesting IF's to choose from. As a GM I get to do NPCs with them, but I too really want to play one or two. :)

No, no word. The invite is still out there for him though. I'm keeping the Recruitment thread open for a bit longer though. While I know a three player game is doable, 4 or 5 makes for more interesting opportunities.

Still thinking about the dragon hatchling as a possibility. I want to get your thoughts on if an edge is taken as part of the "Untested" trait does it still fall under the Born a Hero rule and allow ignoring Rank. Also, how would you handle the one hinderance per session then when you have 4 hinderance points you can spend the four points in PbP.
[ +- ] Born a Hero
[ +- ] Untested

By Splynncryth's spleen, the Undead Slayer has a shocking breadth of powers. Got it mostly built mechanically. Took a couple of hours, mostly time spent to copy and paste power descriptions into the character sheet.

I'm thinking perhaps my PC might be an emissary (sacrificial lamb?) from Atlantis to the Tomorrow Legion, there to help make inroads to Europa?

Yeah, I wish there was an easier way for pulling the info into the sheets. :)

And yeah, I can see the Legion making use of that kind of assistance. :) How much knowledge/experience in Europa are you thinking you would have?

None at all, other than perhaps he's been to where they are to first disembark? I want thinking he's not a tour guide, more like a liaison.

If it works better, I can work with you to build a more robust history for him in Europa for the starting land.

I'm using him as a pronoun, but I think I'm leaning 60/40 for a female character.

I'm not too worried about gender, especially with the dragon option. You ever sex a newborn 7 ton lizard that breathes fire?

Still mulling over. The Rune Warrior piqued my interest, as it offered flavors of playing a monk like character, but I'm wondering if it's too one note (in particular for a longer campaign). Then I ran across the Momano Headhunter, a bit more varied and still has a monk-ish vibe but perhaps too similar of a skill set with the Undead Slayer. The Zapper seems neat, and may work well if we run across the tech heavy NGR/Sovietski, but I'm not sure how much of a serious, day to day, issue the 'glitchy electronics' complication will be?

I agree about not a tour guide, just someone familiar enough with the various regions, cultures, etc. Do you see them as coming from Europa or just having studied it?

Also, don't those big 7 foot lizards shapeshift into 7 ton people?? or thereabouts. LOL

I'm thinking not very much within the group especially, and anyone you'd be setting meetings, etc would probably know a bit and keep anything sensitive to that far enough outside your radius.

If you follow the rules exactly as written, no, because the 7 tons is part of the Size 6 (Large) ability, which has the asterisk so it only applies in dragon form. They don't keep their MDC toughness when not in dragon form as well, so I don't think they become super dense, but it would be up to you. The matter doesn't seem to be settled in any of the Edges or the alternate Dragons in the Field Manual that I recall (I don't have it open at the moment.)

Good point, I had completely missed that. While I was digging I found this House Rule that sounds reasonable:

Scales Beneath the Skin
Because dragons come in different varieties, at character creation you may choose to reduce your dragon-form armor by 2 levels in order to add +2 M.D.C. in human form (concealed, as "tough skin") β€” much like a Dragon Juicer has.

Are there any House Rules or clarifications you all fee are needed? I'm looking at a few, but I'll bring any up for you all to consider. This is all of our's game, not just mine so I want to make it fun for everyone. :)

The only house rule I can think of is more about PBP initiative than SWADE.

1) Have the GM draw cards for everyone, and
2) we shouldn't worry about strict initiative between PCs before the next NPC action. That is, if two PCs are on a 7 and a 10, and then next NPC is on 6, then a third PC on 4, then the 7 could post before the 10 does, but 4 would wait until after the NPC.

These just speed up the asynchronous play.

Thank you! I was trying to figure out something along these lines. This will retain the Card-draw initiative and keep things moving.

I think that works as long as everyone's on board and respectful, which is usually not a problem on GP in my experience.

I like that House Rule. It's not like the hatchling doesn't have stupid amounts of MDC armor and toughness, so it can afford to give up a little for durability in other forms.

Looking at other sources, including how savaged.us appears to handle it, the points for Untested are handled as "at character creation" so could take advantage of Born a Hero. It is a little odd that you can accelerate the good part by taking Major Hindrances instead of Minor, since it builds up to when you have 4 points of hindrances but you can take one hinderance (major or minor) after each session (the GM will have to declare "sessions" here since they won't necessarily correlate with anything including advances.)

Gah! Head spinning! πŸ˜† Had a look at the players reference. And a peek at Savage.us. Needs more looking. πŸ™‚
