Ethan watches Yiva carefully as the lyre collapses into its necklace form, impressed with her control of her arts.
"I hope I can become such a master of my powers." he says more to himself.
Pulling himself back to the young girl his expression tightening as the implications begin to sink in.
"Yeah… I don’t like this."
His attention remains fixed on the violin rather than the girl.
"She’s protecting the instrument, but look at the cost. She’s soaked through, hypothermic, severely malnourished, hypoglycemic, and her lungs sound like they’re full of fluid. Yet she’s spending whatever magical energy she has keeping that violin completely untouched by the rain."
He glances briefly toward the others.
"That isn’t normal behaviour. Not even for someone who’s just… eccentric."
Ethan lowers his voice.
"I think the violin is draining her."
He watches the crimson aura surrounding the instrument.
"Think about it. She’s barely keeping herself alive, but she has enough energy to maintain a perfect magical barrier around a cheap-looking violin. Whatever is going on with her, that instrument aren’t just a possession."
He takes a cautious step closer, but deliberately keeps his hands away from the violin.
"I’m not touching it. Not yet. If it’s possessed, cursed, sentient, or otherwise controlling her, touching it could be exactly what it wants."
His eyes move back to the girl as another cough wracks her tiny frame.
"And if I’m wrong and the violin isn’t doing anything to her, we’re still standing next to someone who’s probably weeks away from dying."
Ethan’s expression hardens.
"Either way, we need to get her somewhere warm and get some food and fluids into her. Slowly. Carefully. Her body is in no condition for us to just start dumping things into her."
He pauses, listening to the unfamiliar words she mutters beneath her hood.
"But before anyone tries to take that violin away from her, I’d like Alice to have a look at her mind. If the instrument is influencing her behaviour, we need to know whether she understands what it’s doing."
Ethan looks toward the others.
"And if Alice finds out that the girl genuinely believes the violin needs protecting more than she does…"
His gaze settles once again on the crimson aura.
"…then I’m going to be even more convinced that we’ve found the problem."
