You ride up into the Valley just as the last colors of dusk fade into the Badlands behind you. A woman stands tall on her porch, rifle in hand, gaze sharp as glass as she watches the yard. Across the way, you see three tough-looking cowboys slouched by the barn, their faces surly, boots muddy, and hands never far from their Colts. A young man glowers at them, fingers twitching at his sidearm, while another does his best to keep peace—his words thin in the prairie air. Even your mounts feel the tension, ears back, as the smell of dust and anger hangs thick in the twilight. It’s clear: one wrong word and this sleepy valley could turn into a battleground.
Jul 27, 2026 10:02 pm
Peter brings his horse to a walk well short of the yard. He takes in all of it in one pass: the woman on the porch, the three by the barn, the young one with the twitching hand, the peacemaker running out of words. He files it away the way he files everything.
Then he raises his right hand to his hat brim, slow, and lifts it clear of his head. Both hands stay high and empty. The smile is easy and costs him nothing.
— "Howdy. Evenin', y'all." He looks to the woman on the porch. "Ma'am. Peter Cross, newspaperman. I'm expected in Redemption, and I've been on the trail since morning — I was hoping somebody could tell me how much further it is."

The goodly preacher is not far behind the young man named Peter. His vestments are coated in trail dust and dirt; certainly not very becoming of someone who is supposed to be of the cloth. He's certainly made an effort to conceal the weapons carried with him.

"Gentlemen, please," Wallace speaks up. "Are you outlaws or goodly men who are afeared of His judgement? Must the clarion call from on high sound over this?"
He rides up a smidge, hand resting near his own piece of iron.

Peter moves his hands, slowly
"Before anybody gets nervous — I'm only reaching for paper and pencil. I'm a newspaperman. It's my trade to write down what happens in front of me, and that's all I mean to do here."
He gets the notebook out, two fingers, and thumbs it open against the saddle horn.
"I'm a man of peace, and I've got no side in this. But a woman working these plains alone has a hard road, and a man who helps gets remembered for it a good deal longer than a man who doesn't."
He wets the pencil and turns toward Big Red.
"So let's start plain. Somebody tell me what happened here. Mister... ? your version first, if you want it printed straight."

Peter writes while he talks, loud enough to carry.
"Declined… to give… his name." He looks up, smiling. "That's all right. I've written worse. Though folks do tend to read something into a man who won't give one."
He stops, tapping the pencil against his chin, then points it toward the porch.
"If you don't care to give your side, that's your call. Then the story runs the lady's side alone. Mind, I'd sooner have both — but I've a story to write either way."
He turns to the porch.
"Ma'am. You said stealing. What did you lose, how much of it, and what day? And your name, if you'll give it — folks read a story better when it's got a name in it."

"Theft, eh?" The reverend says with a sigh as he shakes his head.
"As well as assaulting your fellow man... You fellas are sure looking to drive the devil's herd, should you not repent. Just return what you stole and move on."

"Miriam Sackett." Peter writes it out full, and says the rest as he goes. "Ten dollars… and a hand assaulted." He underlines something. "Thank you, ma'am. That's a story."
He looks up, and now he's talking to the barn, but he's still holding the notebook where they can see it working.
"Well. Shabby business, but a story." He says it to nobody in particular. "He'll have to find his own way out of the columns, then. The country will know. I've seen better men try to get out of such a fix." A shrug. "But what do I know. I'm just a simple newspaperman. And all this over a mere ten dollars."
He shakes his head and lets the notebook fall half shut, looking at the man.

Preacher Wallace rides up closer to Peter before dismounting.
"Fine talking there, son, fine talking."
After dismounting, Michael removes a brush from his saddle bag and gives his vestments a good dusting off. It would be rude to enter a welcoming home in such a state. He even offers the brush to anyone else that might wish to clean up a bit.

"Suit yerself," Miriam says to Silas. "Everyone else come on into the house and get some vittles."
The ranch house is small but cozy, and Miriam makes room for everyone at the table. As you gather round, she gently swats the hand of anyone reaching for anything. "In this house, we thank the Lord first!" After the prayer is made, Miriam lets you dig in: slow-cooked salted pork, venison stew, beans, potatoes, and biscuits are on the menu. Over dinner, Miriam engages in light conversation, talking about mundane aspects of daily life on the frontier. She listens intently to any stories you strangers have to share.

"This is a wonderful house you have, miss Silas," he says after their meal prayer. "It's good to see that The Lord is a staple of this home."
Michael keeps his meal simple by taking some stew, potatoes, and a biscuit. After his meal, and a short story about how a rattlesnake nearly claimed his boot as its home for the night maybe a fortnight ago, he asks Miriam something.
"Afore I forget, I am mighty curious about how those scoundrels from earlier came to be here and went about their deed. Were they simply just rambling by?"

Peter puts away his notebook and pencil, dismounts, and brings the horse to the barn by the reins. Then he goes to the house.
"Thank you, ma'am, for your invitation. Having a home meal is a rare treat."
He smiles and takes his hat in his hands. He sits at the table.
"I wouldn't dream of eating without giving thanks to our Lord. And like the Reverend, I'd be glad to hear the story."

Peter has the notebook back out, unhurried, the pencil moving in short strokes that don't try to catch every word — just the ones that matter.
"Hired hands," he says. "How'd they come to you, ma'am? Somebody vouch for them, or did they just ride in wanting work?"
A beat, pencil still.
"I ask because it'll be a help to the next person in a hard place, hiring a hand — they'll know what to avoid. And it might answer some of the concern Mister Django raised."

Tristan sits on his horse, just inside the tree line. Maybe it was his nature or maybe too many years taking bounties or wearing a star, he knew the three by the barn were no good. Seeing that the others in front of him had diffused the moment, he slid his Sharps back in the scabbard. He knew the three that had left had know idea the relief they should feel, not being on the receiving end of a .45-70. It was also a relief for him to see there were still folks willing to talk first and shoot if they must, rather than the opposite. He eased his horse down to the farmhouse. Tying up outside he eased to the door, "Don't mean to intrude, is there food for one more? I'm willing to pay."

Peter writes it down without comment — drifters, asked for work, season made it easy — and doesn't press it further. Whatever this is, it isn't the kind of thing that arrives with a plan attached.
He closes the notebook proper this time, sets it aside, and looks up as the new arrival ties up outside.
To Miriam: "Sounds like an honest misfortune, ma'am, and no fault of yours for it. Man looking for work in the right season don't come with a warning label." A small, dry note in it — not unkind.

The night passes without incident, and dawn comes early with the cock's crow. With fast broken, the group sets out again for Redemption. You arrive in the late morning, riding into Main Street. You crest the last rise, the town of Redemption sprawled before you—rough and lively. Main Street runs dusty and wide, boots and hooves stirring up haze beneath wooden porches. The music and laughter you hear belong to the Sinners’ Thirst Saloon—Redemption’s rowdy, beating heart—where piano notes and raised voices spill from swinging doors. Not far off, the two-story frame of the Golden Spur Hotel stands steady and discreet, its welcoming sign promising hot food and softer beds.
As you tether your mounts at the hitching post, folk glance your way. Some nod, most measure. You carry trail-dust and the marks of a long ride. Sheriff Boone’s badge catches a glint by the jail; across the way, Abigail Finch, the hotel’s owner, leans from her porch, keen-eyed, assessing if you’re trouble or trade. Where do you turn? For a night’s shelter and news, Redemption offers both a raucous welcome and quiet comfort—the choice is yours, and the first step into the web of townsfolk, lawmen, and legends that call this place home.

Tristan takes in the sights of the new town. It was a pleasure to ride into town with a group of, if not friends, at least folks who seem to be of the same, sound mind. Spotting the hotel, it seems lodging would not be a problem, but the Sheriff seems interesting. Crossing the way cautiously, he approaches the Sheriff. "Morning Sheriff, Tristan McCurdy. As you saw, I'm just getting in to town and looking for work. Not trouble."
Sep 5, 2026 3:59 pm
Peter jumps off his horse and beats the dust from his pants and coat. He pulls off the bandana — its color catching a moment in the sun — looks around, and follows Tristan toward the Sheriff.
"Howdy there, Sheriff! I'm Peter Cross, newly arrived in town. I'm hoping word reached ahead of me — I've a printer's press coming, and I mean to set up the first Redemption newspaper. Might be there's a shop already held for it, or might be I've some looking to do myself. Who'd know?"

Something like surprise crosses Peter's face, gone almost as soon as it arrives, swallowed by a smile.
"There's already a paper. That's good — means the town's got an appetite for one, and a man already knows how to feed it. Thank you, Sheriff, for that."
A smile, a finger sliding along his hat brim by way of thanks, and Peter heads off toward the saloon.
"I'll go find Mr Jasper Lee, and see what I can do with him."

Digging a grave is back-breaking work, even with three of you working on it. The preacher proves no stranger to hard work and joins in with you. As you dig, he chats idly.
"I certainly appreciate the help, gentlemen. So, you two are new in town. Well, treat Miss Abigail nicely. Rumor has it she once killed a man with a letter opener! And if you need to track somebody, go see Red Hawk, the Cheyenne scout. He can track a horse across bare rock. Some say he's part spirit."
It takes you about three hours, but eventually, you have a hole deep enough and wide enough for a coffin. The preacher helps you carry the coffin to the grave, lower it in, and then cover it with dirt. Afterwards, the preacher says a few words over the grave and pays you the agreed-upon amount. "Thanks again. I suggest heading over to the Sinner's Thirst to take care of your dry throats."
