Chapter 1: A Home on the Range

Jul 26, 2026 7:06 pm
You ride up into the Valley just as the last colors of dusk fade into the Badlands behind you. A woman stands tall on her porch, rifle in hand, gaze sharp as glass as she watches the yard. Across the way, you see three tough-looking cowboys slouched by the barn, their faces surly, boots muddy, and hands never far from their Colts. A young man glowers at them, fingers twitching at his sidearm, while another does his best to keep peace—his words thin in the prairie air. Even your mounts feel the tension, ears back, as the smell of dust and anger hangs thick in the twilight. It’s clear: one wrong word and this sleepy valley could turn into a battleground.

Peter brings his horse to a walk well short of the yard. He takes in all of it in one pass: the woman on the porch, the three by the barn, the young one with the twitching hand, the peacemaker running out of words. He files it away the way he files everything.
Then he raises his right hand to his hat brim, slow, and lifts it clear of his head. Both hands stay high and empty. The smile is easy and costs him nothing.
— "Howdy. Evenin', y'all." He looks to the woman on the porch. "Ma'am. Peter Cross, newspaperman. I'm expected in Redemption, and I've been on the trail since morning — I was hoping somebody could tell me how much further it is."
OOC:
He is trying to ease the tension and try to read the situation

The goodly preacher is not far behind the young man named Peter. His vestments are coated in trail dust and dirt; certainly not very becoming of someone who is supposed to be of the cloth. He's certainly made an effort to conceal the weapons carried with him.

"Sure'n I can tell you how to get to Redemption, but I've got a little issue to take care of first, if'n you don't mind." She turns to the three cowboys. "I want you three gone. Git off'n my property! Go on, then! Git!"

Big Red
Whall now, ma'am, you ain't bein' very neighborly. We was just..."

Miriam Sackett
"You was just stealin' from me, is all! Now, git!"

The three make no move to leave, and the armed boy's fingers begin to wiggle just above his gun.

Joshua Sackett
"Ma, they's goin'." The unarmed boy turns to the men. "Ain't cha?"

Big Red
The man spits a wad of chew on the ground, but makes no move to leave. "Best be careful, boy," he says to the kid with his hand near his gun. "I might start to believe you's meanin' ta shoot me, and that..." he pats the sawed-off shotgun he carries. "...Would be a mistake."

Crow
"Yeah," another of the men intones. "You'd be dead afore you cleared leather!" He pats the Colt at his side.

Looking at the three men. Three man against a woman and two boys. That don't seem fair.

"Gentlemen, please," Wallace speaks up. "Are you outlaws or goodly men who are afeared of His judgement? Must the clarion call from on high sound over this?"
He rides up a smidge, hand resting near his own piece of iron.

Peter moves his hands, slowly
"Before anybody gets nervous — I'm only reaching for paper and pencil. I'm a newspaperman. It's my trade to write down what happens in front of me, and that's all I mean to do here."

He gets the notebook out, two fingers, and thumbs it open against the saddle horn.
"I'm a man of peace, and I've got no side in this. But a woman working these plains alone has a hard road, and a man who helps gets remembered for it a good deal longer than a man who doesn't."

He wets the pencil and turns toward Big Red.
"So let's start plain. Somebody tell me what happened here. Mister... ? your version first, if you want it printed straight."

"Jest keep moving, strangers. This ain't no business o' yours."
Jul 30, 2026 7:26 pm
Looking at Big Red. It might be, just don't seem right, seems like some funny business going on here, troublemaking. Anybody wanna explain what's going on here?

Peter writes while he talks, loud enough to carry.
"Declined… to give… his name." He looks up, smiling. "That's all right. I've written worse. Though folks do tend to read something into a man who won't give one."

He stops, tapping the pencil against his chin, then points it toward the porch.
"If you don't care to give your side, that's your call. Then the story runs the lady's side alone. Mind, I'd sooner have both — but I've a story to write either way."

He turns to the porch.
"Ma'am. You said stealing. What did you lose, how much of it, and what day? And your name, if you'll give it — folks read a story better when it's got a name in it."

Miriam Sackett
"Name's Miriam Sackett. These owlhoots not only stole $10 from me, but they also assaulted one of my hands. I'll make you a deal; resolve this without gunplay, and I'll give you food, water, and beds, and see that your mounts are cared for."
Jul 31, 2026 12:35 am
"Theft, eh?" The reverend says with a sigh as he shakes his head.
"As well as assaulting your fellow man... You fellas are sure looking to drive the devil's herd, should you not repent. Just return what you stole and move on."
OOC:
would I be able to use faith for this, or would Persuasion still be preferable?

OOC:
Persuasion is still the preferred skill.

"Miriam Sackett." Peter writes it out full, and says the rest as he goes. "Ten dollars… and a hand assaulted." He underlines something. "Thank you, ma'am. That's a story."

He looks up, and now he's talking to the barn, but he's still holding the notebook where they can see it working.
"Well. Shabby business, but a story." He says it to nobody in particular. "He'll have to find his own way out of the columns, then. The country will know. I've seen better men try to get out of such a fix." A shrug. "But what do I know. I'm just a simple newspaperman. And all this over a mere ten dollars."

He shakes his head and lets the notebook fall half shut, looking at the man.

Silas rolls his lucky coin across his knuckles….

Gentlemen….who has the $10, so that we don’t have to resort to trading lead?

"Ah, hell! It ain't worth all this trouble! Here!" The man holds out a wad of cash, which Joshua is quick to take and return to his mother. "C'mon, boys! We got things ta do." He spits a wad of tobacco on the ground, and the three men walk away.

Miriam lowers her weapon and sighs. "I sure am obliged, strangers. As I promised, Joshua will tend to your horses. Come inside and get something to eat."

Preacher Wallace rides up closer to Peter before dismounting.
"Fine talking there, son, fine talking."

After dismounting, Michael removes a brush from his saddle bag and gives his vestments a good dusting off. It would be rude to enter a welcoming home in such a state. He even offers the brush to anyone else that might wish to clean up a bit.

No offense, ma’am, but Spook here doesn’t much like being stabled. He’ll handle it much better if I do it. If you’d show me where you keep the feed and where your stable is…

Glad to see those troublemakers leave. Now it's time for some grub. Don't know who's more hungry, me or my horse Tony.

"Suit yerself," Miriam says to Silas. "Everyone else come on into the house and get some vittles."

The ranch house is small but cozy, and Miriam makes room for everyone at the table. As you gather round, she gently swats the hand of anyone reaching for anything. "In this house, we thank the Lord first!" After the prayer is made, Miriam lets you dig in: slow-cooked salted pork, venison stew, beans, potatoes, and biscuits are on the menu. Over dinner, Miriam engages in light conversation, talking about mundane aspects of daily life on the frontier. She listens intently to any stories you strangers have to share.
