I follow Tristan and Peter toward the Sheriff, giving him a friendly smile and a nod while I pat my horse, Tony.

Sheriff Boone
"Asa Boone. I'm what passes for the law in these parts." He addresses Peter, "Can't say as that we heard you was comin', but we've plenty of space in our daily paper, and you'll find no shortage of stories. You'll want to speak to Jasper Lee, the editor of the Redemption Gazette." Turning back to the others, he continues, "If you're lookin'for work, you'll find plenty. That over there is Miss Abigail. She's the proprietor of the Golden Spur Hotel. You treat her nice, or you answer to me."

Something like surprise crosses Peter's face, gone almost as soon as it arrives, swallowed by a smile.
"There's already a paper. That's good — means the town's got an appetite for one, and a man already knows how to feed it. Thank you, Sheriff, for that."

A smile, a finger sliding along his hat brim by way of thanks, and Peter heads off toward the saloon.
"I'll go find Mr Jasper Lee, and see what I can do with him."

Tristan nods to the sheriff and heads towards the hotel. Once there he addresses Miss Abigail. "Good day Miss, the Sherriff says you're the person to talk to about a place to stay and maybe work. I've just arrived, but I'm looking to stay, If'n I can make my way here."

Tristian:
Miss Abigail
"We got plenty of rooms available. As to work, you need only to ask around. Everybody needs something, seems like."

Peter:
The office of the Redemption Gazette is small and tightly-packed with newsprint rolls and bottles of ink. A man looks up as you enter, raises his eyebrows, and returns to his work.
Jasper Lee
"Hello, he says without looking up again.
Sep 15, 2026 7:27 pm
Peter looks around, breathing deep, letting the smell of paper and ink thrill his nostrils. Thumbs hooked in his belt, easy, he answers with a broad smile, in a cheerful tone:
"My name is Peter Cross. Trained some years as a printer's assistant back east, and the Sheriff tells me you're the man running the only paper in town. Thought I'd see if an extra pair of hands was worth anything to you — or a pen, if you'd trust me with one."

Followed Peter to the hotel. After Miss Abigail said to ask around about work. Django does a spin around, then loudly announces, Anybody got work, we're looking for some.

Jasper Lee
"I can always use a reporter, especially one who can spell. You've got the job if you want it."

In the dusty street, most people don't give you a second glance. One man, however, approaches.

Miss Abigail
"Morning, reverend."

Michael Brinks
The man tips his hat. "Good morning, Miss Abigail." He looks at Django. "Reverend Michael Brinks. If you boys are looking for work, I need a couple of strong backs. I'm willing to pay you $3 each for your help."
Sep 16, 2026 12:21 pm
Tristan looks the Reverend over, "What's the work, sir?"

Michael Brinks
"Someone passed yesterday, and I need grave diggers and coffin bearers, if'n you're not too proud. It's good, honest work."
Sep 16, 2026 6:49 pm
Buryin's dirty work, but it's best done sooner, Tristan thinks to himself. "Well, Reverend, digging graves sure is work. If you can point me to a shovel, I'll get started."
Sep 16, 2026 9:02 pm
Peter smiles, and offers his hand.
"Good, then. I'll write you some stories, and you tell me what you think. Might I get a few back issues, so I can get a feel for your style — and figure how best I can help?"
Sep 17, 2026 4:44 am
Guess it's time to get digging then. As he stretches his back getting ready for some manual labor.

Digging a grave is back-breaking work, even with three of you working on it. The preacher proves no stranger to hard work and joins in with you. As you dig, he chats idly.

Michael Brinks
"I certainly appreciate the help, gentlemen. So, you two are new in town. Well, treat Miss Abigail nicely. Rumor has it she once killed a man with a letter opener! And if you need to track somebody, go see Red Hawk, the Cheyenne scout. He can track a horse across bare rock. Some say he's part spirit."

It takes you about three hours, but eventually, you have a hole deep enough and wide enough for a coffin. The preacher helps you carry the coffin to the grave, lower it in, and then cover it with dirt. Afterwards, the preacher says a few words over the grave and pays you the agreed-upon amount. "Thanks again. I suggest heading over to the Sinner's Thirst to take care of your dry throats."

Jasper Lee
"Help yourself," he gestures to a pile of papers.

Smiles, Thanks for the $3 preacher. Think I'll find a chair or bed for this sore back.
Sep 24, 2026 7:22 pm
Nods to the Preacher and follows Django back to the bar.

Peter settles his hat back on his head, gathers a stack of papers, and heads for the door, with a short nod back at Jasper.
"Be seeing you."

He steps out into the street, papers tucked under one arm.
