[Closed for Applications] In This House - Obscure RPG Horror One-Shot

Be sure to read and follow the community guidelines.

ClosedObscurePrivate1 / weekTheoboldi
It's the year 1994. The house on 1307 Burkitt Street is infamous, surrounded in local gossip by rumors and urban legends about disappearances and hauntings. It has stood abandoned for well over a decade, yet no one seems to know the truth about its former owners, the Travers family, or why they left. Neighborhood children and teens kill the time by daring each other to go near the house, especially around Halloween.

Last year, a group of teens took it a step further than most. During a Halloween party, they were dared to go to the house and knock on its door. But after they left to do so, they all vanished without a trace. Much to the grief of their parents, even a large scale investigation turned up nothing. As time passed, almost everyone gave up hope.

But now, new evidence has surfaced. A video tape, appearing as if from nowhere at the household of one of the parents, its contents confirming that the last known location of the missing people was at the house. You remember its contents well, the blurry, static-y footage. The teens in front of the house, laughing and joking with each other. Cut. A shaking camera being carried through dark corridors, accompanied by screams of terror. Cut. The camera, now lying motionless on the floor, picking up the faint sounds of heavy breathing drawing closer, before a black set of boots stomps into frame and the footage ends.

For one reason or another, this tape has spurred you into action once more. Today, you're heading to 1307 Burkitt Street. If there are any clues left after all this time, you will find them.

Not a window was broken
And the paint wasn’t peeling,
Not a porch step sagged--
Yet there was a feeling

That beyond the door
And into the hall
This was a house of
No one at all.

Yet something walked
Along the stair
Something that was
And wasn't there

- Vic Crume, 1970

Hi everyone! After a long absence from play by post gaming, I'm looking to make a return to the hobby with a short one-shot, and re-find my bearings.

Obscure is a rules-light found footage-themed horror rpg set in the 1990s, about ordinary people like you and me getting forced to confront the horrifying and the supernatural. To survive, they'll have to piece together clues from their surroundings, as well as VHS recordings left behind by those who previously fell victim to what lurks in the dark. But as the tension builds and fear takes ahold of their minds, it may just be their own panic that'll be their undoing....

Since this is a fairly little-known game, previous knowledge of it is not required. The rules are very light, so I'm even willing to take on players who have not read the game itself, and are willing to rely on the GM to explain important rule concepts as they come up or to roll for them. I'll get more into this under How to Apply.

Adult Content or Controversial Themes:

Due to the horror-focused nature of the game, this one-shot will be for adult players only. Heavy violence and gore will feature in the adventure, as well as themes of abuse against children. Though the scenario is not a deep dive of psychological horror into these themes, they still play prominently into the background and events of the story.

Should you have any topics beyond these that need to be off the table or that are points of especial sensitivity for you, feel free to voice them in your application so I can either adjust the scenario where possible as well as help other players avoid them, or if not possible inform you that the game would not be suitable for you. During the game, I'll of course always be open to pausing the story, and to retcon or remove offending elements if something unexpectedly discomforting crops up during play.

The Story:

Game Duration and Post Frequency:

The game will consist only of the "In This House" scenario, a simple, restricted story about exploring the titular haunted house, with no plans for a follow-up. My posting rate for play by post is pretty relaxed, and I expect only one or two posts from everyone per week, however I will enforce this posting rate, and send out reminders to players who have not posted in over a week.

If real life circumstances force a player to miss out on posting for a week or two, that is perfectly alright and I will not hold it against them, but I do expect them to inform the group somehow so we know whether they are still interested.

Players who have posted neither in-character nor out-of-character in more than two weeks, and who have not contacted me otherwise, will be assumed to have left the game. I will be taking control of their characters as NPCs, who will fall to the perils of the house at the next opportunity.

Overall, I hope to wrap up this scenario within a couple of months, give or take.

How to Apply:

To apply, make a post in this thread with a short description of your character. I prefer brevity over detail when it comes to character backgrounds, especially for one-shots. Specifics can be hammered out either during play or alongside other players once they have been chosen.

Your character description should include the following things:

- A Name
- A Backstory describing how they became who they are, and what their profession is. Please keep in mind that the player characters are intended to be ordinary people in a (as far as they know) mundane world, though of course your character can believe in the paranormal.
- A Phobia that scares them more than anything else
- A Personal Agenda that explains why they are investigating the house

As a personal point, I would like no AI-generated character portraits or text in applications or during the game, and will not be taking on players who wish to utilize either. No character portraits are necessary for this game, in any case.

I plan to be taking on 3 or 4 players total for this game, if enough people show interest. Players will be chosen based on personal preference and whose character concepts feel like they'd fit the story the best.

Once all players have been chosing, we'll be rolling for starting Endurance Points and Flashbacks on the game's forum. I'll also provide a list of equipment for you to roll on or choose from for your character. Should any of the players not have read the game, I'll talk them through the basics and then bring up mechanics as the need arises throughout the scenario.

Thank you to everyone who'll show interest! If you have any open questions left, please feel free to let me know!

As I mentioned on Discord, I would be interested to try this game concept. I find that the found footage trope can be used to great effect, both in books and films, I am curious to see how it translates to TTRPGs.
Now, let's see...

Name: Angelo Harris (Angie)

Backstory: Angelo is a nervous, clumsy small-time crook trying hard to get a piece of the action by joining one of the gangs in the area. A few botched jobs in his teens meant that he hasn't managed to gain enough street cred to be considered for anything better than the occasional lookout mission, or minor weed-mule gig. But things might be looking up for Angie.

Phobia: Angelo has found a drowned dead man, when he was just a kid playing in the street. The corpse had been in that stinky canal for days. Looked hardly human, swollen and white, eyes bulging from the sockets. He's been dreading to die in the water -lungs filling up, madly gasping for air, soaked clothes dragging him down- ever since.

Agenda: gang lieutenant Vinnie Esposito lost a stash of meth, last year. And he is still pissed about it. Made him look bad with the higher ranks.
But now, that video was recovered, the one with the missing teens. And in that video, the distinctive duffel bag where Vinnie's meth was kept is visible in one of the shots. Same bag, same stitched-on patches in the same spots. No doubt. So Vinnie called Angie to go to the house on Burkitt and find that bag, to find out who stole it. This is Angie's chance.
Do this one job right, and you're in with the big guys. What could go wrong.

Interesting concept! It's pretty grimy, but not to the point of being unfitting, and could add some fun RP opportunities as the situation within the house gets more tense.

To better slot Angie into the premise, would you be okay if we said that Vinnie's related to one of the missing teens, providing an explanation for how the duffel bag may have ended up with them at the house? Or did you have something different in mind?

By all means, anything can be changed! Also happy to come up with something less grimy, more mundane.

I was just providing a motivation for Angie to go in, even if he never found that bag, and its presence in the house (and in the video) was never explained! 😅

Love the clarity of the starting post and the stance on certain topics. I would like to join, but I'm completely unfamiliar with the rules and I've never really been into the found footage horror genre before. I like to try new things, though.

If you'll have me, I'd like to see what characters other players will come up with first and see if I can write someone who fits in.

This seems interesting, I'll potentially throw my hat in the ring:

- A Name: Peter Lawrence
- A Backstory: Peter grew up and lives a few blocks away from the Travers house on Westmoreland. His primary occupation is junior high student, though he also works at the movie theater and plays on the soccer team (well, the junior varsity team, even though he's an upper classman). He's generally awkward around new people, and he's kind of fallen into the unpopular crowd as the cliques at school have been splitting up and reforming and somehow none of them seem to want to claim him. The couple kids who are still close with him have lately noticed that rather than joking about it when it happened and then moving on, Peter seems increasingly obsessed with the 1307 Burkitt Street and is constantly bringing it up and loudly spouting pointless facts about it. He's getting to be to weird to hand out with in public.
- A Phobia that scares them more than anything else: Peter is terrified of roaches. His family went for a vacation once, and he had had trouble sleeping in the house they were renting, thinking he heard something moving. He eventually fell asleep but awoke to find them everywhere (including crawling all over him). They were not only huge, but tough enough to not die if you stepped on them or hit them with a book. And they'd clearly get pissed of and fly at you buzzing if you tried. Plus, the more he learned about them afterwards, the more he realized that even if you do kill every one you see they may not really be gone and they could be hiding pretty much anywhere even if you don't see any signs!
- A Personal Agenda: Peter had an enormous crush on Danielle MacEnroe who was one of the teens that disappeared in the incident--she likely didn't even know who he was but she was in his science class that year and was always polite to him (if not actually one of his friends) which made him fixate on her as a potential love interest. Since she disappeared before he could ever ask her out, she's maybe as close as he's gotten to someone who hasn't rejected him and therefore 'the one who got away'.

Heh, I think I would have too much fun with that bag to not have it show up if we keep that backstory as is. It's mundane enough I think, maybe a bit more grindhouse than I expected, but still in line with what I outlined. If we get a lot more interest, and I like all of them more, I might suggest to you to adjust it, but for now I don't mind it at all.

Sure thing! I don't mind players who don't know these rules at all. They're incredibly simple and can be explained as they crop up. No need to be a genre afficionado either. If you feel inspired, write a character whenever you want before the end of recruitment.

Huh, a young teen character. I think that is definitely workable without any issues on my part, though it will potentially put violence against a child into direct view during the scenario. Without spoiling anything, having a teenager player character will bring some fun roleplay opportunities during the scenario, though I'll need to see if the other players are going to be okay with it.

Looks great as a character though, got no other notes.

And I'm not married to that at all if it creates issues with the gameplay or tone for anyone, just the first thought that popped to mind of someone who would be incentivized to go house hunting.

Name: Devon Morgan
Backstory: Devon is a local in her twenties. Member of a punk rock band. She believes in the paranormal, but has never seen real proof of its existence.
Phobia: Being bound and helpless
Personal Agenda: Devon knew some of the teens who went missing. Her younger brother, Eric, was one of them. She wants to know what happened to them and if her little brother is dead or alive.
OOC:
I've played through a partial venture through an Obscure scenario, or something very similar, in the past. I would like to play in one that actually runs to completion. Thanks.

Hmm, on second thought, with 1-2 posts per week, I think I'd struggle to stay engaged in the story. A little too slow for me.

Should have read the post more carefully!

The concept and the relaxed posting rate actually appeal to me, so I'll see if I can come up with an interesting character over the weekend. Have to catch up on a few other games first.

Sure thing! I'm leaning towards being fine with it, just wanna see if anyone else objects.

The character looks fine to me, seems like someone who would fit in well on this adventure. Feel free to come up with a backstory reason for her phobia if you want to, though you can leave it as just a pre-existing fear she just happens to have. :)

if possible, could you take a look at MinMin's character and tell me if you'd be okay with one of the player characters being a younger teen? I just want to make sure everyone is okay with that idea.

Hey, no problem. Better to realize it now than when the game is running. If you ever change your mind, feel free to let me know!

That's fine, I'll be keeping the recruitment open until at least the end of the weekend, as we only have two character applications for now and I want to give everyone who might be interested a chance to express it. Looking forward to see what you'll come up with.

I've been thinking of what kind of character would both fit in and would be fun to play and I ended up realizing that I don't want to play a character who has a connection to anything in the house itself. That is, those teens, any items in the footage, or even the paranormal. Can my character's agenda be an obsession with one of the PCs instead?
May 23, 2026 6:22 pm
- Name: Garry Warren
- Backstory: Garry is a detective at the local police station. Born and raised in the city, he joined the academy at the urging of his policeman father. He never excelled (at school or the academy), but is a hard worker. After walking the beat for over a decade, he finally managed to claw his way up to the detective.
- A Phobia that scares them more than anything else - Holes. Big holes in the ground (like an open pot-hole) or a bunch tiny holes (like from some parasitic disease). Just holes in general. (Apparently the fear of tiny holes is called Trypophobia)
- A Personal Agenda that explains why they are investigating the house - the disappearance of the group of teens in '93 was one of Garry's first cases. The unresolved nature of the case bothers him greatly and he partly blames himself for not finding the kids.

I also don't mind the MinMin's Peter.

Sure, that should work just fine so long as it means they'll get into that house. Just clear it up with the player of that PC first, and I won't have an issue with it.

Looks great, and fits into the scenario perfectly! Just like with RageRed's character, feel free to come up with a reason for his phobia, but you also don't need to if you feel it works better as a fear he just has.

RageRed, would you be okay with that? A young woman being unhealthily obsessed with Devon? Do you have any conditions?

Name: Claire Owen

Backstory: Devon Morgan. Devon. Dee… D. Damn her. Your entire life you are normal. People expect you to. If you aren't the way it is expected, you aren't accepted in a group. Don't be pink or purple! Be beige. Be safe. Be normal. That is the ground rule of society. Of the only society Claire ever knew. But then there was D. Dee… Devon. Devon Morgan. How was it that someone like that was loved? Claire loved her. She went to her every concert! Well, she missed the first one, because Devon never told her. She could have. Or someone else could have. The second concert she wasn't invited to, but she still saw it. Listened to it. Claire bought a ticket for the third one. And for the fourth one. She knew how to make up excuses for getting home late at first, and then she didn't even need excuses — she only needed a way to sneak back in the dorm. And then there wasn't even a dorm in the way. She followed her once… to her house.
"Hey, D… I heard about the tape. Are you going? Do you mind if I tag along? Safety in numbers, heh?"

Phobia: Her whole life Claire was afraid of being unwanted. Unwanted, unappreciated, a person who doesn't belong. A friend who is only tolerated because everyone is polite. A child who is cared for because her mother failed to terminate the pregnancy in time. A student who gets participation trophy because it is mandated for everyone. "I don't want you in my life, Claire. Nobody does. Leave." — was she told that or was it only in a nightmare she saw?

Agenda: Claire went to that house for only one reason — Devon Morgan went there. A brother? Who needs her brother? But… If Claire helps her find that kid, even if it's only white bones in a basement, then Devon will owe Claire. And then maybe… She could demand something… To know the secret? Or just to touch… Or maybe… the two of them will get locked in a room… Alone. And then she will need Claire. And neither would be able to leave. Besides, there's nothing supernatural in that stupid house anyway! Claire watched the Shining. And all the Elm Street. It's all fairy tales.

Okay. Sorry it took all day for me to get in here and read.

I have no problems with Peter's concept.

I am okay with Claire, but I might require some pepper spray if she get's too crazy on me.

As for Devon's phobia...let's just say someone lost the keys at the wrong moment...
