A CROWN RETURNED GAMEPLAY THREAD

Sheon is quieter as the group walks father into the woods, trying to avoid thoughts about his father and what his life would have been like out here.

Trenton notices the dragon flying above, and attempts to draw attention to whoever is near him if he can in time. Otherwise he describes the dragon creature to the best of his ability to the group. Nethys keep us… he prays quietly to himself as they continue walking.

"Hmm, an ill omen. Perhaps there's more than one thing snatching woodsmen from the woods." Sheon shrugs. "Still, that's not the one we signed up for, eh?"

He pauses for a moment, then observes aloud "You know, something about the man's stories back there bother me. The ones where workers are getting caught in traps and then attacked by the wolf? I suppose if Barius was a bit overzealous in laying out his traps, we might see a few workers stumbling into them; but the way he told it almost made it sound as if the two were working together to hunt the company men. Or else, we're dealing with a wolf so smart it's not only learned to recognize traps but wait around to see what gets caught in them."

He exhales loudly. "Bah, foolish! I'm sure I'm putting too much stock in a woodman's tall tales."

"Hm..." Fira is anxious, but does her best not to show it. With all her bravado, she's genuinely convinced she can take on an oversized wolf; in fact, she more or less has in the fighting pits that only opened after midnight, in large basements and the halls of the wealthy and prurient. A wyvern, however, is quite something else.

And so she is quite relieved when Sheon changes the topic back to the more germane parts of their investigation. "Well, once we make it out of here alive, we can go squeeze Barius if his story doesn't add up. Don't worry, if you get caught in a trap I'll protect ya."

Probably if the dragon was a threat people would have mentioned that. Good point about the wolfs intelligence… something strange could be happening. We should be wary and stick together.

Sheon nods back at Fira with a smile. "Much appreciated."

Making your way through the Darkwood forest, it seems that you are moving at a snails pace at times and seeing the wyvern flying majestically in its sheer confidence of its power you aren't sure of the nature of its appearance or whether it has revealed a possible fierce adversary to deal with. The brackens and ferns make for a softer walk in some parts too.

It is now becoming darker and you decide to set up camp for the night in a small clearing.
OOC:
How does your camp look for the night? What are each of you doing for the night? How are you feeling about the day?

The weather seems fine and even in the chosen clearing there's enough leaf cover above that he doesn't fear any rain, so Sheon begins making the framework for a small fire in the center from fallen branches and the like and lays out a bedroll on the ground a short distance away. "I would suggest we keep a watch, lest someone be dragged off by wolves in the night. I'd be happy to take first shift or whichever others don't prefer. We should also set a clear perimeter marked so we can see it in the firelight, and no matter what we see or hear, not allow ourselves to be lured beyond it--too many people falling into pits and onto spikes for wandering about in the dark to be a good idea. If something happens, we wake everyone else before taking action."

"Hmm, I really thought we'd be able to tackle this task quickly, guess I have much to learn." Jayne says, disappointment in her voice. "Excellent plan Sheon. Someone wake me up early for second watch." She wasn't sure how much longer it would take to track and stop this beast, but she accepten the task, she would see it through
May 16, 2026 9:57 pm
Trent helps Sheon set up a nice area for the fire. He then takes a few minutes to check over his gear, to make sure its in good condition and nothing needs mended.
To Jayne: it would have been nice to have this problem sorted, but I think we are in agreement that this case isnt quite as straightforward as we hoped. Thanks for taking watches, tomorrow if we are still out I will take a shift.
May 16, 2026 10:19 pm
"Great, we're all settled." Fira smiles in satisfaction, noting that she may not miss sleep tonight. And yet she finds herself close to the edge of the perimeter, eyes glinting against the firelight as she peers into the darkness, her vigilance counting as a watch of its own while it lasts.

While staring, she exercises, stretching, turning, leaping and practicing martial arts forms vaguely like those of the Tian peoples.

You all get a full rest as the night is uneventful. You are up early in the morning and ready to continue on your journey. You make your way further into the forest and presently hear running water. Presently you see a wide river that spans some 50' foot wide in some places as you look up and down the river. The banks are heavily forested in places and there are signs of life in the water.

You can either attempt to cross the river, head either upriver where the waters source seems to be coming from or head downriver.

"Well, do we want to try and cross, or spend the time to go upriver? Jayne ask, not sure where exactly they were headed
May 18, 2026 12:47 am
Fira sighs, glancing at Jayne. "It can't be my job to remember, can it? Droskar's Crucible. Big shaggy old wolf and maybe a wyvern. I'm sure one of you knows how to get there. Unless...you can pick up the scent and narrow it down?" That last bit was directed towards Rhaemy.

"I'd rather not have to ford it if we can avoid it. I'm inclined to backtrack it to its the headwaters, perhaps it will grow narrower and easier to cross as we approach them. With all this wood being cut, you'd think someone might have hoisted up a bridge."
May 18, 2026 6:44 am
You decide to follow the river upstream in an effort to find its source and negotiate it in the hope it will be somewhat easier.

As you are trekking along the sides of the river you suddenly have a slight sense of dread as the forest continues to roll out before you.

Sheon is somewhat surprised no one voiced a dissenting opinion as they follow his lead upstream. It's strange to have grown up here and know so little of the landmarks within the wood itself. But then, he'd always avoided the parts of the camps where the actual work took place. Still, he can't escape a creeping feeling he may have chosen the wrong direction...

Rhaemy follows along with the rest of the group, attempting to align her decade old memories of the forest with what landmarks she was able to find. If the worst came to pass, perhaps she could coax some answers from the local fauna to put them back in the correct path.
