Obviously, this is for out of character discussions. As long as it doesn’t get out of hand, I won’t put any rules on it.

First item for the OOC Chat. What is everyone’s general availability? By that, I am simply asking for what time/days do you generally check the message boards and or reply. I am not looking to nail folks down, just trying to narrow the best window for game posts. Also, if you wouldn’t mind letting me know what time zone you are all in, it would also help.
If you would rather not post this stuff here, please feel free to PM me with the information. Thanks.

Also evenings MDT (GMT-6) (I'm in Colorado Springs, CO) weekdays and any time on weekends.

Apparently imgur hates me, none of the links to images in this thread or the Character Development thread resolve :P
Hmmm actually they display on my phone, just not on my mac??

So weird. Eventually i'll figure out what setting is blocking them. A few icons come through on the site but most shared images don't
Apr 6, 2026 4:02 pm
One of the issues on other computers is the browsers and cache
the other is internet websites that are allowed
Most of this challenges are on the reddit forum as my initial searches. I don't know if this works for the Mac ecosystem.
Edit:
I just found this thread that says the images on imgur need to be public:
Anyone who has the URL can view/download the image, but the links are not made public by Imgur. If you post the image in a public thread anyone can find it from there, of course, and anyone who can see it (in a private game) can send the link to anyone else. That is just the nature of the beast.
If you don't trust Imgur, you can host the image anywhere you like (and use the URL option), but the same caveats apply: in order for your players to be able to see it, anyone with the link can see it, so it is only as protected as you keep the link.
If you have to keep things (more) private, you could create named shares on dropbox or google drive, or one drive, or any cloud system, but, for them to only be visible to your players, each player would each need an account for you share it with.
Maybe shift the images to dropbox or Google drive?

Eastern Time U.S., I'm usually available later in the day. Sometimes mornings, but not always.
Apr 7, 2026 1:43 pm
Until October it will be UTC+02:00 at my place. I'm much, much slower on the weekends (starting at Friday evening and ending at Monday morning... :), but during the week days (apart from some holiday days) I'm online most of the day, evening + early night and my answer should be quite fast, as I can't help myself but treat e-mails from GP as "proper members of my TODO list..." - so I try to push them out as fast as I can:D
But usually I will wait for other players to post their reactions before posting again - I mean between GM posts:)

The game reminded me of a bit of maintenance I needed to do. Also this is a bit of in situ intelligence for the preferred rifle that almost every Romanian has.
The WASR-10
This baby is not a toy. It is also an even more stripped down version of the AK-47. My brother told me the charging handle was stuck on his. So I fixed it today.
Took me about ten minutes, did not require a field strip. The bolt carrier had *somehow* come out of the reciever. After a casual inspection it appeared to have suffered a brass over bolt malfunction. The jam had been cleared but the spring, what appears to be a shock absorbing spring from an automobiles suspension had over torque when cycling the bolt and pulled the upper apart.
I tried pumping the charging handle, it was sticking on the safety but the safety was not engaged. By safety, I mean a small steel plate and pin inserted over the trigger that when raised to the housing prevents both the charging handle from cycling and the trigger being depressed. It is not foolproof, nor would it prevent accidental cookoff if you, dropped or hit the rifle on something hard enough as the hammer can still move freely.
After pulling the upper housing the issue became apparent. The bolt carrier had been dismounted from the sheet steel that makes up the magazine well and trigger assembly. It slid almost perfectly into place, except the seams were misaligned. This prevented the charging handle from seating properly when cycled. It would pull a round from the magazine and seat it, but when falling back into place it would not fully close. This renders firing the rifle impossible. It was off by maybe 1mm though perhaps less, it was barely visible even when the housing had been removed.
So I pulled the spring, which again did not at all match what you would find in an AK-47. Repeated it on the seams and using a bit of violence shoved it back into place. There was a satisfying click. So I pull the charging handle. Click-clack joy.
The casing over the bolt carrier and trigger assembly only has one function, to keep debris from entering the rifle. It was completely operable without it, though the safety could not be engaged. When attempting to seat it I encountered a problem that I have never encountered on any weapon. When placed into the seams to close the housing, it no longer fit. To be clear the rifle can still fire in this state. I tested it by cycling it and dry firing several times.
It has a very odd design. First you must raise the flip sight. The housing does not slide into place, instead you must depress the hammer until it locks(it takes considerable force with just my thumb) then placing the lip of the housing at a 45 degree angle to the hammer press it beneath a lip at the hammer.
This can only be done with the safety "engaged" though with the housing off, this causes the pin to pop loose, so you must hold the safety in place with your free hand. Then with great violence slam the housing down til it pops(not clicks) into place. Then pulling the safety down it will click but still not seat correctly. Remove the thumb from the hammer and reengage the safety. Then when you pull the charging hammer the housing will click firmly into place.
A final note about this WASR-10, the safety cannot be engaged while the stock is collapsed. The stock will flap about if you collapse it with the safety engaged. I do not fathom what they meant by this. However, after my repair we dumped 900 rounds through it and noticed no performance issues.
This is possibly even more reliable a weapon than an AK-47. It just has some idiosyncrasies. This one is a model from 1999, and it seems to be jury rigged construction. The automotive spring, and sheet steel, not what I would initially have thought to be ideal, but I have been shooting this rifle since I was 12 when my stepdad bought it for my older brother (for $180 at Dick's Sporting goods)
I personally have shot tens of thousands of rounds through it in that time. My brother likely twice as many. We shot our own self loads, +p loads, you name it. My best guess is that my brothers friend Laz had put some kind of pissin hot round in it to cause the malfunction. Laz denies this, who on earth wants to be the guy that fucked up and unfuckupable platform?
At any rate even though it appears to be made with substandard materials. It goes back together quite neatly. And we were zeroing a target at 250m in the dim light here in Anchorage.
Not my favorite rifle by any means, but as it is exactly what we will be finding in game, a good bit of intel for you all to consider. Thanks for reading my novel.

Note the gaps at the flip up site and just above the mag well. I wonder if this rifle is standard at all. Or if the steel housing is from another rifle. There is no rattle and as stated above the only function it performs is to keep debris out. Still it functions quite well in spite of the fact that it shouldn't. Id give it 3.8/5 overall but if you don't count ergonomics it rises to 4.8/5.

Yay, I'm kind of a big map person. Not maps that are big but just maps in general. I think there's kind of a beauty to them on my iPad. I have a link to the Scottish map index, and I look at old 19th-century maps of the United Kingdom and Ireland from time to time just to see what I can see.

Well, I posted a map of the area where the main bulk of the 173rd is at and indicated the Replacement Company as well. I just placed the 2 infantry battalions, not all the component units.
For reference, the buildings where the symbols are at are hardened Aircraft Shelters. Since there really aren’t any aircraft left (assigned) to the base, each shelter is assigned to one company of infantry.

Just for reference, there will be more maps as the game goes forward. The game hasn’t yet officially started. I’ll be posting more maps soon, though.

Since the unit is in a bowl, so this is exactly what not to do (Dien Bien Phu, Wanat, COP Keating, and it looks like now the Battle for Călărași Gară) place the defending unit in a bowl with the enemy holding the hills/mountains surrounding such area.

I’ll get an updated map by midday tomorrow (Session 0 official start). It will have the general "last reported" positions. It will likely be 48-72 hours old. It will not show positions of the Soviets, though it may show hints. (I am having some growing pains on my map app… but I’m getting there).

Hopefully you military folk learned something from those moments and are controlling the high ground.
Apr 16, 2026 6:05 am
Emberskyes says:
Hopefully you military folk learned something from those moments and are controlling the high ground.Low ground is especially useful for armored companies as you can "hull down" which protects the platform by minimizing its profile and gives it better mobility via jockeying.
Ambushing isn't perse impossible from the high ground, but concealment makes it significantly easier. An easier mounted ambush is a more effective one. This also applies to flanking maneuvers.
In urban combat or MOUT the low ground allows you to better leverage cover.
In short, mastery of terrain is the ultimate free force multiplier.
Finally don't get too bogged down with making the optimal decision. Often simply making a decision puts you ahead of the enemy. "No plan survives contact with the enemy." They are not going to cooperate.
A good wisdom in this regard:
"When you are retreating artillery always falls long. When you are advancing it always falls short."
Apr 16, 2026 6:48 am
Another truism in combat is "a good plan executed now trumps a better plan executed later". That’s the power of initiative. Although I can’t help but think I got the quote wrong…

To answer this question, yes, the Berlin Wall has come down. The Baltic States (Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia) have become independent. Ukraine also separated, but has been under occupation (this has NOT been clearly spelled out in the game history) and has had a very active partisan rebellion going on, requiring it to maintain large garrisons. It is perceived, after the events that led to the Romanian leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu, being deposed (and executed) that Romania was providing support to the partisans. When Romania began serious discussions to enter NATO, it was the last straw and the "Special Military Operation". began

Had a breakthrough in the lab last night.
Was playing around with slide pitching and interpolation on a vocal track and created an awesome bass line with some eastern orthodox chants. Mixed a Mongolian throat singing technique to produce the sound.
Then I was like, thats cool.
So I played a Phrygian mode over it. And shit my pants(not literally) at how good it sounded.
Going to title the track Twilight Romania. It's going to be 8ish minutes long. I cannot figure out how to make it 13+ minutes long(EPs tend to sell better for some reason) but an LP single that contains an entire albums sound is good enough for only 5 weeks of time invested into it(so far.)
Thanks for reading my novel.

Were we going to resupply here or is that later? I ask because I have 1 food and 1 water and would like to increase that to at least 1.25 food and water.

There will be opportunities to resupply not only food and water, but other kit will be available as well in the near future (before you start out on the patrol).

To be honest I feel lost with so much equipment ...and I find it no fun to spend like have an hour trying to check what each item really is and what to choose. Don't get me wrong: I appreciate the effort! But: please, can you just give me "the standard list" and what I should note on my sheet? I know that many players love to be so "simulationist" and choose every hat and gloves (and great for them!) , but personally I don't care what kind of pancho my PC will be wearing. I would prefer to just assume that he is ready for the current surrounding environment (or somehow is NOT ready). Only the choice of weapon is interesting for me...
I start to think: Maybe I'm not good fit for this game? :)

To be fair the "equipment list" was just a wall of text for me too. I was never in the military so I do not speak the lingo. I'm was hoping there'd just a standard kit too but I listed some things I want, forgot sleeping bag and glasses / goggles I think.

Also neither of our characters have a military background and if anyone knows how to toss a mountain of shit against an small object it is the American military.
Lets face it if GDW had realized what a complete disaster the Russians have turned out to be in the field they'd have rethought the premise for the game. However in the early 80's they seemed to be a serious threat.

I would say 'ditto' as well as far as the equipment list goes. Unless the GM states otherwise, that this is more a list of stuff we were guaranteed to have in the field in case it matters in game play.

.So at the time the original game came out in the 1980s (I 1st played in Bamberg, GE in 1986) it seemed very plausible that the 2 large forces would grind each other down as the GDW game designers thought.
On the equipment side I have sent a couple of messages to our GM off list and I think all of your comments are valid. 2 themes are coming out, one this is the last shot of equipment before the big collapse and two it is very cold. My feedback is that if the gear is required the setting needs to remind us players of how dang cold it is, so we as the players are writing literally the cold is rattling the bones as our players man guard posts and the like.
I would not drop out yet, lets give our GM time to consume the feedback and make adjustments. He is new and he is really trying with the game.

Agree with Muns. And to be fair, TK2 was always heavily about inventory management. I think it just gets compounded with the nature of PbP.

This edition abstracts it fairly decently, plus there ́ightly be some redundancies if you look closely and consider what the rulebook says kn equipment compared with what the list offers. Frankly our sheet doesn't have the space to write all this down, so it can be assumed some of the basics we already have, and if there is some stuff like "Cold Weather Gear" it will be abstracted to a single listing or two.
Older editions 1st and 2.2 were a little more brutal with the masses of equipment you could have, books upon books.
A Twilight Campaign generally is a struggle with equipment because you have to maintain your equipment in the midst of an apocalyptic war and struggle to find repairs, replacements and extra ammo and so on while travelling, so while it seems like we have a lot now, we might be complaining later. Usually, there's a group vehicle that the group has to manage too, so it looks like we're avoiding that for the moment, which seems to simplify things in some ways.
Ammo is a little confusing because it's used as a currency as well as just being free ammunition for a weapon, so if you have loose ammunition it could mean you're doing alright with trade currency, or you're relatively okay with ammunition.

I have to admit I didn't worry much about the list of equipment. The sheets make it look official, like something our characters would actually get. That's neat. Am I going to keep track of every single piece on there.....noooooo probably not, I'll just refer back to them now and then. As time goes by, things happen, maybe goggles get broken or jackets ripped, may impact skill tests due to exposure. As said above, it's VERY cold and survival will be part of the challenge.

Gear Concerns in game
General comments:
Ok, I see a rather large pachyderm taking up much of the room, so let me get that out of the way. First, as Muns stated, the reason all that gear is listed it, in part, to remind you that these are harsh mountain conditions. For the past several days, most of your characters have been at significantly lower elevations and relative warmth. Now at Charlie’s FOB at elevation where the wind whips constantly, the temperatures are colder and less forgiving. Also, this represents the general equipment that the Army issues to units moving around in these kinds of conditions.
Weather and Climate:
Welcome to the Carpathians, where if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will get worse. The beginning of March has always been a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to weather. However, thanks to the various nuclear detonations across the planet, the climate is going through a significant cooling trend, and while it has not gotten to its worst, temperatures, winds, snowfall, etc, are already setting records. Temperatures in and around the current game location remain at or below zero on the Fahrenheit scale or -18C… for daytime highs in the sun with no more than a light breeze. The mission is likely to take the group to areas that are colder, winds stronger and snow deeper.
Weight, Equipment Tracking and Expectations
The 173rd Infantry Brigade (Airborne) is a light infantry unit. The most accurate thing I can say about the light infantry never feels lighter to the soldiers. This is because they generally have to carry everything they need to fight and to live, with them. That having been said, I, as the GM, have no intention to put everyone through carrying 100lb/50kg rucks or heavily penalizing people in a way that would be unfair.
I have already worked up a "standard weight" for how kit would be carried for individuals. In addition, the leaders I’ve provided are highly capable and approachable. They have the specific pre-war training and experience to lead this type of mission. There are other "cheats" that I have had going on in the background to help your characters manage the equipment that we just haven’t gotten to yet.
Now, about the list I put out. Muns pointed out 2 things that are accurate that I’ll point out real quick. The first is basically just a bookkeeping issue and doesn’t affect things - all ECWCS items are GEN II, not GEN III. Nothing to freak out about. Also, Muns was on top of things as far as who I am and what I’ve done.
As I said above, the list is what the Army would issue. And I had the PSG give you the same basic instructions that you would get in real life. Many of your character reactions are exactly what I heard when I went to my first Arctic CIF issue. So if it helps sooth the players reactions, the list basically got the exact reaction it should have. And that was half the reason I gave it to you all.
The other half was, more or less, a point of information, education if you will. Looking at the list, there should be 1) an appreciation of the importance of the upcoming mission, 2) an understanding that the environment is as likely or perhaps more likely to kill as enemy bullets, and 3) so that you have an understanding of the gear your characters will be using in order to stay alive and accomplish your mission.
As for equipment tracking and accountability, no, I do not expect anyone to transfer all this to character sheets. No, I do not expect anyone to account for all the equipment issued. No, you do not have to carry all this equipment. For in game posts, you don’t have to be overly specific about things. The biggest thing I can think of is the cold weather clothing. The Army’s ECWCS (Extended Cold Weather Clothing System) has 7 layers. But I do not expect anyone to specify the layers by name. If your character is exerting a lot of energy, just say something to the effect of So-n-So changes layers to keep from overheating or something similar. The same goes for all the equipment.
Going Forward
Over the next several days in game, your characters will be receiving a dose of concentrated training regarding the equipment, how to use it, when to use what and what to look for to help prevent falling victim to the environment. During that time, I look forward to helping to refine things further. If anyone has questions, or additional concerns, please feel free to message me directly. I do not want to overwhelm the players and I am sure we can work out suitable solutions.
Sincerely,
RW,

Hi all! Unfortunately due to my real life responsibilities I must cull as many games as I can. I think this one will be EPIC, but very demanding in the same time. And demanding means: times consuming - in many cases. And I want to "repay" people that give much with me giving back to them. So I don't think I will be able to keep my posts at such high level as you guys! Maybe some day when I will have more free time :)
It was wonderful to play with you all and see how your PC came to life! Also the GM is doing the magnificent work with amazingly evocative descriptions, providing assets and role play that makes this world feel very immersive. But I won't be able to return the same level of effort in foreseeable future!
Thanks again and see you again in some game! God bless you all! :)

Sorry for the delay. I’ve had a lot of dumbass old soldier medical crap this past week and a half that has delayed me. However, I should be able to move us through the Armory, Ammo Supply and final inspection scenes today and I anticipate getting the section going away from the COP by the end of the weekend
