Where are the other units from the Task Force?
Are you asking about specific elements of the 173rd or other?
Yes, specifically the other units in the BDE (BDE HCC, the EN Co and LSB), and the 198th AR, 2-11 FA and the helo unit.

Since the unit is in a bowl, so this is exactly what not to do (Dien Bien Phu, Wanat, COP Keating, and it looks like now the Battle for Călărași Gară) place the defending unit in a bowl with the enemy holding the hills/mountains surrounding such area.
It might take me a little longer on the map. Please see my previous post.

Hopefully you military folk learned something from those moments and are controlling the high ground.

There are many advantages to holding the high ground on the attack. But there are just as many for holding the low ground on defense. The environment you are fighting in shapes the strategies available to you. The strategies employed leverage different tactics.

Low ground is especially useful for armored companies as you can "hull down" which protects the platform by minimizing its profile and gives it better mobility via jockeying.

Ambushing isn't perse impossible from the high ground, but concealment makes it significantly easier. An easier mounted ambush is a more effective one. This also applies to flanking maneuvers.

In urban combat or MOUT the low ground allows you to better leverage cover.

In short, mastery of terrain is the ultimate free force multiplier.

Finally don't get too bogged down with making the optimal decision. Often simply making a decision puts you ahead of the enemy. "No plan survives contact with the enemy." They are not going to cooperate.

A good wisdom in this regard:

"When you are retreating artillery always falls long. When you are advancing it always falls short."

Another truism in combat is "a good plan executed now trumps a better plan executed later". That’s the power of initiative. Although I can’t help but think I got the quote wrong…

That checks out Top.

No plan survives contact with the enemy... most don't survive contact with reality.

I want to say that's an old GDW-Traveller quote from 35-40 years ago. For some reason the name Sean "Hammer" Lathrop comes to mind.

I ran the name in google and they're selling prints of the original artwork for 300$. Jeepers.

I'm starting to feel a bit like the good Doctor Cristea probably does - surrounded by all these military folk talking mumbo jumbo.

Yeah us military type have a tendency in RPG games to massively fail to see the Forest through the Trees.

Really enjoying the posts for game setup, great writing.
Thanks. There will be more to come. I may push Session 0 out to Friday or Saturday. I have an unexpected medical appointment tomorrow and it’s messing with my timeline.
From my POV it would even better if we will start at Saturday or even Sunday as I will be traveling from Friday to Sunday, so much slower posting, but will be back online on Monday. And I wanted to be full "present' at the beginning of our game. But I respect that probably other players are eager to start playing sooner. Just wanted to say, for me it will be even better.

Besides: a lot of good health to you!

If it makes you feel any better, I was in the Navy, so I’m over here just like "I like boats? Boats are good."
