Varos watches the action of mole with a bit of surprise"That was unexpected. Maybe we should take a moment before we continue."

Unexpected? Public service free of charge. Tips would be appreciated
Maybe dwarf's dark humor surprised someone. Mole carefully clean his dagger and waits for Varos to take a moment. Then add another
I'm sorry for letting goblin die so painless. Tied up to a tree ... ravens peck out eyes... that would sure be a better destiny for a goblin

"I have dispatched many a rabbit and fowl in the same manner, and no woodland creature ever threatened a village with raids and black magic. Such is the burden of the hunter." Benford muses, surprising himself. "Let us journey onward, lest we be hunted ourselves."

Benford will press on into the forest, resuming his scouting.

Varos will look at Mole and shrug"Dead is dead." He will follow Benford up the trail.

Another two hours pass on the small trail, but soon you see ahead of you a rise in the swamp. Castle Blackscale was once the jewel of Blackscale Lagoon, the gleaming castle upon the hill that was a symbol of the baroness’s power. Now it is little more than a skeletal husk of stone and slag, melted to ruin. It stands atop Moss Hill, visible from Fanetide as a symbol of lost glory. What treasures it may still house are now buried in stone and reclaimed by time — it is now a moss-covered arrangement of cairns that looks more like a graveyard than a grand palace. At this distance, you have plenty of cover from the saltgrass that stands 5 ft high in most places.

Biscuit whispers: "Are we sure this is a good idea?"

"Goblins aren't very disciplined if we move slow and keep to this tall grass we should be able to get close and get a better view."

OOC:
how high the wall? What's E-4 looks like? Is it solid enoughto have goblins in it or just rubble?
Jul 22, 2026 6:13 pm
OOC:
The castle walls are stone and are easy enough to climb with the use of proper gear, such as rope and grappling hooks, though they are a bit slick from ambient humidity and the moss that has begun to cover the stone. Thieves and other characters with the Climb Walls ability receive a +10% bonus when attempting to ascend it. The wall itself is 20 feet high.

I read
Quote:
A level 2 thief has an 88% chance to climb walls or cliffs in Swords & Wizardry
And nothing about grappling hooks.
I guess I am good to take that risk. Is that right? Shoul I roll 1d100 already ?
Proceed to the wall trying to stay in saltgrass if possible.

Benford will follow Mole's lead, but he checks out E-4
Jul 23, 2026 11:05 pm
Varos will follow Benford staff in hand at the ready. It might be easier to get through the rubble.

As a thief you can use your climb walls ability at +10%. The rest if you want to examine E-4:

This tower was once the castle’s rookery, but now stands as little more than a pile of melted, stone slag that has fallen in on a crumbled base. Rooting through this rubble reveals a few small nests that were made after the tower’s collapse. A careful examination of the area reveals that several generations of birds nested in this area, but there are more recent avian corpses that appear to have been drained of their blood, and lack any apparent wounds.

Mole avoids talking about the drained corpses. Dwarf tries to understand if it is safe to move over that pile of melted, stone slag that has fallen in on a crumbled base. He probably won't need to climb the wall.
