Mathfuric says:
"Antonius Block," the cleric says at last, his voice rough with sleep. "Cleric of Wee Jas."His gaze returns briefly to the healer's kit before meeting the elf's eyes.
"I don't believe we've been properly introduced. Who might you be, and what brings you to this part of the Dim Forest?"
WhtKnt says:
"Sir Morton," Sora yawns, Pray, would you travel with us and tell us what you know of nearby Orlane?"Having finished with his ministrations, Morton wipes his hands and puts away the pouch that had held his restorative herbs: empty now. He stands up and addresses the group: "I am the stranger here; thank you for giving me shelter last night, and now allow me to introduce myself to you all." He looks at the elven scholar again with a sheepish smile, realizing only now that he had failed to introduce himself earlier. "I am Sir Morton, a free knight originally from Niole Dra. If my appearance and manner disturbed any of you last night, I apologize. My only excuse is the stress of our circumstances at the time. I had just spent a day and a night pushing through the Dim Forest before I happened to find you all...and you were all fighting zombies! I was certainly not at my best; I hope I will better represent my gentility now, after rest and a meal."
With that, Olyena pronounces the stew ready to eat.
rpgventurer says:
Kazzak joins the others at breakfast. He says to Dell, "I'm ready for our grim task today. Sir Morton recommended burning. I think we have much to learn from his experiences in the Dim Forest."He sighs. "Knowing no one else she could trust, she fled into the Dim Forest and kept running until she found us. We were suspicious of her at first," here he looks wryly at each of you, "but after she risked her life to defeat the goblins at our side, we had no further doubts. At dawn, we convinced her to come with us back to the village to seek some justice...more's the pity." Morton shakes his head.
"Orlane is a small farming village, situated in an area that's been cleared from the Dim Forest on the banks of a small lake in the flow of the Realstream River. Most of the village proper is close to the lake, with three inns, a few shops, several houses, a river mill, and a temple to Merikka sitting atop a low hill to the east like a small fortress. When we started out two days ago, we weren't far from the village, because Chase had pushed us to continue marching through the dark the day before. Some of the others had been to Orlane on an earlier expedition, and they had a contact, whom we met on the edge of Orlane that morning: a human named Ramne. From him we found out that the whole village was up in arms, the village Constable and a temple Priestess telling everyone that we adventurers were the cause of all the recent troubles - people moving away or just disappearing, as well as the deaths of some citizens in the Golden Grain Inn. That last is a legitimate accusation - apparently the others were drugged at that Inn on their first visit and nearly died at the hands of these citizens, who were members of a secret cult that has been kidnapping and/or killing people. The residents formed a town patrol, and it was that patrol that Ember ran into when she got away from the cultists. It's a bad situation; not everyone in Orlane is a member of this cult, but we haven't figured out how to tell the cultists from regular folks...except that some of the cultists sport a marking of a coiled spiral, often green, as a pendant, a ring, a tattoo, or even a scar. We debated whether to continue in daylight or wait for the cover of darkness. We went back into the Dim Forest and waited until night.
[b]"Coming back into the village after nightfall - the night before yesternight - we were startled by the town patrol and scattered. We regrouped at the Golden Grain Inn, but one of our number - a human called Jonel - was gone. He may have run off, he may have been captured..." Morton sighs, running a hand through his long green hair. "I just don't know. What I do know is that, after a quick discussion, we decided to press on. Ember unlocked the door and we went into the Inn, which still bore the grisly marks of the mortal combat that had taken place a few days earlier; either there weren't enough cultists left to keep the Inn open or they decided not to for some other reason (which is what it turned out to be). Aside from removing bodies, they hadn't cleaned up! We went downstairs to a place the others had seen but not explored: a hidden door in the basement that was barred on the outside. Going through, we found tunnels that had been dug to hide the cult's loot, which was guarded by snakes and a kind of undead creature that paralyzes you with a touch. We were struggling in that fight when we were joined by Lyrel, one of your kin," he nods at Amnestria, "who was also a Dungeon Buster sent by both Olpert and then Ramne to help us. We thought the tunnels might lead somewhere, but no, they were just a way for the cultists to dispose of inconvenient bodies and stash their treasure. We surprised a couple of cultists and took them down, then left the tunnels and the Inn, with the idea that we'd investigate the Temple next, to see what was going on with this Priestess. Maybe we could reason with her, if she'd just been misled, or stop her, if she was another evil cultist. But our luck was still bad; as we moved through the night, we were overheard by the innkeeper of the Slumbering Serpent, who formed a second patrol to hunt us. We split up again. After we regrouped, this time Ember was missing. Not wanting to lose another one of our group, Theran the druid and I left to find Ember, and my Lady Arya joined us. But we were caught by the patrol; Theran held them off and bade my Lady and I escape. We got away and followed Ember's trail into the Forest, and that's where we ran afoul of the vile zombies that beat us down and left us for dead. I barely survived, and tended to Arya's wounds. Figuring that Ember was lost, we headed to the Temple, where we were delighted to find Ember still alive! But Theran was missing.
Morton takes a long drink of water, thirsty from so much speaking. Two others joined us then, adventurers but not Dungeon Busters, who had run afoul of the paranoia in Orlane and were on the run like us: the gnome Eugenios (a kindred spirit from the Keolish capital) and the halfling Ferranzo. Though we came from different places for different reasons, we all wanted to put a stop to the madness. So they went with us into the Temple, and together we overcame some night watchmen and Temple acolytes on the way. Moving upstairs, we found a room filled with skeletons, where..." He chokes up a little. "My...my Lady was slain. In rage, we destroyed the skeletons. Many of us were hurt, and we argued about what to do. I argued that we should leave, rest, report, and resupply, but I could not convince the rest to set aside their wrath. In the end, I left alone, carrying poor Arya in my arms."
He sighs. "I can only hope that the others fared better than I; I was wounded, exhausted, and heart-sore, and was nearly discovered by a dwarven warrior when I brought my Lady's body out of the Temple. He went in, and emerged a few minutes later running down the hill. Knowing that I could not overcome such a warrior on my own, I hid. But he returned, leading a large crowd of villagers, before I could get away with Arya's body. In the end, I hid her and drew the others away so that they would not desecrate my Lady or find my companions still in the Temple. I ran, and ran, and ran, with them always on my heels, until I reached the Forest, and kept running. At some point, I lost them, but I knew our only hope was to let Olpert know and get help."
He spreads his hands helplessly. "That is my shameful story. I ran, in the hopes of telling my story to other Dungeon Busters. Thank you for letting me."

Amnestria says, "At this point, I think we should return to Hochoch. Sir Morton has much to report about the team we were originally sent to rendezvous with. Plus, it seems as though Sir Morton has already been through a lot, and it'd be unwise to take him back to Orlane."He considers for several long moments. "The wise scholar speaks truly. I am tired of grave injury, murder, and seeing my dear companions killed or lost. So I would gladly welcome a different assignment. But I am a Dungeon Buster, and if Olpert sees fit to send me back with another team, there is a part of me that would be glad at the opportunity to see my friends again, and to put down those who harmed us."
rpgventurer says:
Kazzak nods. "I knew my pick and shovel would prove useful at some point. We’ll need someone to keep watch as well."Aug 16, 2026 6:31 am
Amnestria acknowledges the wagon. "Truthfully, we are renting that vehicle under the guise of merchants. We thought to use that cover as a means to enter Orlane without suspicion, since some of us appear more... scholarly, than others. The rest of our group would don the role of merchant guards, or in the case of Sir Berthold, our benefactor. As for supplies, most of it is for personal use; not enough for any extended excursion."
As she stands over the pit and bodies, the wizard readies her wand to apply the necessary fire. "The wagon reminds me... what happened to the oxen?"

Berthold ate quietly and listened. He was far more well-disposed towards the newcomer after he had some rest, and that the party was no longer under immediate threat.
"You bear grim news indeed, Sir Morton," the young knight said, obviously still unsure about the proper manner of addressing the elven man.
"Multiple disappearances, confirmed deaths and probable capture of members of the Dungeonbusters, a town taken by a weird cult and at the brink of full madness, with roving bands of peasants harassing travellers and guests, a Temple of Merikka wherein guardsmen, acolytes and undead skeletons fought the advanced party at every step," he continued his summary of the salient points, from his perspective.
Having paused on the matter of the first group sent to Orlane, the knight continued with questions: "When you left, how many Dungeonbusters were still trying to delve deeper into the temple? Who were they? And do you think, fear or know if they have failed? Last night you suggested they might be lost, but we must be sure of what we may tell Master Razorsson."

Dell will nod"If people were in trouble that sounds like Chase. He would give his life to rid Orlane of this cult and find the missing member our company." He will pause for a second"It pains me to say that maybe we should head back to resupply before heading on. Can also report that bandits were using the Jarl's farm as a base." Then to Antonius"I know a bit of tracking. Not near as much as Chase but I should be able to find your lost hammer. I would imagine Ene will leave a pretty obvious trail."

Berthold continued with questions: "When you left, how many Dungeonbusters were still trying to delve deeper into the temple? Who were they?"There is Jonel, whom I already mentioned: a furtive looking human boy with some magics at his disposal, who was taken by the patrol.
"There's Theran, a fine elf with a mastery of nature magics. I last saw him fighting villagers two nights ago.
"Aanbo is the veteran: a dwarven monk of considerable skill. We usually all defer to his wisdom, even if it leads us into peril.
"Myrtha? You should see Myrtha! She's a heroic warrior, and larger than any of us. Really the biggest female humanoid, much less human girl, I've ever seen.
"There's Chase, the human boy. Dress that one," he points to Dell, "like a woodsman and that'll give you an idea. A good tracker and a stout companion in a fight.
"There is Ember, the runaway human kid who joined us for safety.
"Lyrel and Ferranzo and Eugenios I hardly got to know, but all three are brave and good in a battle."
matmaisan says:
Berthold follows up with: "And do you think, fear or know if they have failed? Last night you suggested they might be lost, but we must be sure of what we may tell Master Razorsson." "But my hope is that they have escaped capture. It is a full day since I left them with my lady Arya's body. That's plenty of time to accomplish many things for such resourceful adventurers, if they avoided further conflict, rested, and kept their eyes open." Morton grins suddenly, delighted with a pleasant thought. "They may even have found the priestess and solved the mystery of the cult by now!"
Aug 17, 2026 9:06 pm
"So … the cult has taken over a significant part of the village. It seems wise to report what’s happened to Razorsson. The previous group of Dungeon Busters sounds larger than our group and their fates are unknown."
"I suggest we leave tomorrow at first light. The bodies will be burned and we can heal up a bit. Unless anyone thinks the situation is too dangerous to stay?"

Berthold listened patiently as different plans of action were suggested. After a moment, he have his personal appraisal.
"If we are to return to Hochoch, let us be quick about it and turn back now. If we are to seek Ene and Master Block’s hammer, we’d better be quick about it as well. As much as Razorsson’s instruction were to reach Orlane and contact our predecessors, it seems that getting the information back to the Dungeonbusters takes precedence. Either the group makes it out of the temple, and we will meet them in Orlane or in Hochoch, or they don’t, and there is no point for us to rush in after them to meet the same fate. Our best chance is to prepare properly and approach Orlane from a position of force."

Antonius listens in silence as Morton recounts the events in Orlane, his expression growing increasingly solemn as the story unfolds. At the mention of Eugenios Fizzlehelm, however, there is the faintest change in his composure—his eyes sharpen and his jaw tightens. For a moment he says nothing, allowing Morton to finish his account before offering his thoughts. He gives Dell a quiet nod at the offer to track Final Measure. "I would be lying if I said I did not want my hammer back," he admits. "It has served me faithfully, and it was entrusted to me in the service of Wee Jas. I would see it returned." His gaze moves around the group.
"But wanting it and pursuing it blindly are two different things. We have learned enough this morning to know that Orlane holds dangers greater than those we encountered here. We should resupply, tend our wounds, and report what we have learned before we venture further."
When the decision is made to remain for the day, Antonius joins Kazzak and the others in preparing the pit for the undead. He works without complaint, using the mattock and shovel with the same deliberate care he had shown when burying the bandits. When the last of the corpses is placed within the pit, Antonius steps back, removes his gloves, and bows his head.
"Ruby Lady, judge these dead as you see fit. May their restless forms trouble the living no more."
He then pauses, his thoughts turning to the fallen and missing Dungeon Busters. The name Eugenios weighs heavily upon him. Antonius closes his eyes and offers a quiet prayer to Wee Jas—not only for the dead, but for his old friend, wherever he may be.
"Lady of Death, preserve the souls of those who have fallen, and guide those who yet walk beneath your gaze. If Eugenios still lives, grant him the strength to endure until we can find him."
Rising, Antonius looks toward the road leading back toward Hochoch. His hand instinctively moves toward the empty place where Final Measure should be.
"First we prepare. Then we return." His voice is quiet but resolute. "And when we are ready, we will face Orlane properly."

"Should we really stay the night here again? I think some one sent those zombies at us. I don't believe they just stumbled on us. I think we should finish here all of us load up in the wagon and head back as soon as we are done. We stay to the road. Sleep in shifts in the wagon so we always have a fresh driver and a couple people awake at all times."

OOC:
I remember having to camp at least once before we got to the Jarl farm.Aug 19, 2026 5:43 am
OOC:
Just a few clarifying things FYI:- Distance from Hochoch: the party made camp just a short distance away from the cutoff to the Jarl farm after a day's travel. A group leaving the Jarl farm a little earlier in the morning (and using the Road) would be back in Hochoch just after nightfall, and it's a similar distance to Orlane. On foot without the wagon would be a bit faster. On foot through the woods is slower, and the ox and wagon can't navigate the woods (you have to take the road with the wagon).
- Healing is dependent on magic or hit dice spent with healer's kit uses; long rests don't cause PCs to recover HP. Morton has used up all of his healer's kit, so you'd be forced to use magical healing and/or any other remaining healer's kit applications to heal before leaving the farm.
- How long you take to dispose of the zombie bodies depends mostly on how large a hole you want to dig. It doesn't have to be as deep as the graves you dug earlier; having burned the bodies, there will be considerably less to inter. With everyone taking turns digging a shallow fire pit and a building a hot fire (augmented by fire bolts), the party could be completely done (buried the bones & ashes and ready to leave) in three hours. It'll take longer if you want to bury them deeper.

Dell has a healers kit with 8 uses left. Maybe we leave the oxen and wagon in the barn and hump it to town.Aug 19, 2026 1:31 pm
"I agree with Dell," the knight stated. "We ought to leave as soon as we have disposed of the bodies. We should assume anything we leave here will be taken by bandits or other marauders. Anything we need we take. As to your hammer, Master Block, we could at least try to follow Ene’s trail for a while. She might have dropped it, and at least we’ll have an idea of her bearing…"
Also, Berthold will be verifying the wounds of the party members to see if he can finish healing any remaining wounds. He has a total of 6hp to spread around, if necessary. Who needs hp?

"Only if she was headed in the same direction; we'll lose time otherwise," says Amnestria. "I do agree that we take anything we don't want to lose to future bandits or undead. I need not remind us that we are renting the wagon and oxen, and their owners expect a safe return."
