OOC:
Sorry folks, I got confused and lost track of the fact that I'd already rolled the successful Undead Fortitude save for Kazzak's attack on Zombie 1. It is not down, the combat part of this encounter has not ended, and the zombie has moved around the northwest corner out of Kazzak's sight east to Berthold at the northeast corner of the house. Amnestria can still see it from the north-facing window. Everyone, please post your round three turns.

Seeing the zombie attracted to his light, Berthold meticulously retreats, using all his skill and attention to stay precisely out of reach, while luring the zombie further away from the house, but on a side he knows they will be visible to the shooters from the farmstead.
OOC:
He’ll disengage if needed, but will otherwise double move to keep away and to lure it some distance from Dell’s body.

Dell thinks to himself it is cold. Why is it so cold and dark? Chase my brother I might have done something dumb again but I can't remember. Hold on brother. And then darkness.

Rolls

Death save #2 (DC10) - (1d20)

(6) = 6

Sora hesitates, uncertain what to do. Dell is dying, but she has no healer's kit and no healing expertise. Still, she has to try to at least stop the bleeding. Sora's face shows determination as she dashes out the back door and around to the front.

Whatever she and Kazzak are doing, Amnestria thinks it is working. She aims her wand again and fires off her trusted magical bolt.

Rolls

Amnestria Elyphara: Fire Bolt, Fire Damage - (1d20+5, 1d10)

1d20+5 : (11) + 5 = 16

1d10 : (7) = 7

Round Three
(this is preceded by round two, followed by round four)

Berthold extricates himself from the zombie's flailing arms and backs up toward the well, with an eye to keeping the zombie in sight of Amnestria at the window.

Looking out of the north-facing window in the north bedroom, Amnestria sends another gout of flame down at the undead monster.
Zombie 1 takes 7 fire damage! On fire, it staggers for a moment, then collapses into a smoldering heap.
"That should do it," Amnestria says with satisfaction.

Dell fails his death save.

Sora runs past Ene, unbolts the back door and flings it wide, Dashing with Berthold's crossbow out into the deep night, navigating in the dark with her dwarven vision, and arrives adjacent to the dying rogue. Amnestria sees her arrive.

Seeing her chance, Fern rushes Morton in his chair. Morton slams to the ground, prone. Ene steps up and smashes at the elf with Final Measure. The hammer thuds into the floor next to his head. "Don't follow us!" Fern growls to Morton and Guilbert as she grabs the shield and runs out the door with Ene. Berthold sees the two figures turn south and start for the trees.

Guilbert, groping in the dark, asks the elf: "Are you alive, Sir Morton?"
Morton groans and replies, "I'm still alive. They just took me by surprise." Able to see in the dark, the warlock gets to his feet. "Let me guess - that shield wasn't theirs?" Guilbert responds, "No, Sir. Those items belonged to the cleric gentleman." Morton is already walking out the back door; Berthold can still see him in the Light of Antonius' shield.
"Your prisoners are getting away!" Morton yells to the adventurers within earshot. Quickly spotting the fugitives with the glowing shield, he grimaces, calling upon all the powers of darkness and sends a beam of demonic energy at their backs.
Fern takes 4 force damage but staggers and keeps running!
"Little lesson - when people capture you to keep you safe, don't attack them!" He calls after the fleeing women. "You're going to die out there!"

Hearing Amnestria seemingly confirm the victory over the undead and seeing Dell lying still on the ground, Kazzak runs out of the bedroom and hurtles down the stairs, calling out to the elf: "Sir Morton, please. Dell needs your healing skills right away!" Seeing that the elf is gone - only Guilbert is in the room - Kazzak shoves the table aside, throws down the bar, and runs through the broken door to kneel at the dying rogue's side. "Oh, you're hurt! Dell. Dell. Stay with us. We need you."

OOC:
@CancerMan @matmaisan - What would your characters say to announce to the rest of the party that the last zombie is down?

@rpgventurer - please post Kazzak's round three turn to end the round. At the west-facing window in the north bedroom, Kazzak can see Dell's feet at the corner of the house. He knows that Amnestria has just flung more fire at the zombie (Amnestria and/or Berthold may say something to let him know that it has been defeated), and Kazzak has also heard all of Morton's yelling about the bandits getting away on the opposite side of the house.
Aug 4, 2026 7:57 pm
Unsure of the situation, Kazzak runs down the stairs and outside the door toward Dell. "Sir Morton, please. Dell needs your healing skills right away! Oh, you’re hurt!"
OOC:
Dash action. I’m assuming Kazzak can’t reach Dell even with the Dasb. How far away does he end up?
Aug 4, 2026 9:17 pm
"That should do it!" Amnestria says, relief in her voice. She turns to the doorway and stairs to briefly consider the distance and passageway to her companions below, but then opts for the magical approach.

Twisting the tip of her wand in the air with an intricate weave, Amnestria projects her voice with a Minor Illusion approximately 10 feet below her, a suitable distance to originate for everyone downstairs to hear. "That's it. The last zombie is down," her disembodied voice declares.
OOC:
Casting Minor Illusion, audio version.

OOC:
@rpgventurer - It depends on whether he's going after Morton or going straight to Dell. Looking at the map of the house, 25' will get Kazzak to the bottom of the stairs. Another 25' Dash will either:
a) have him shove the table aside and exit the front door to end up adjacent to Dell outside
or
b) have him cross the downstairs room and exit through the back door, coming out right behind Morton.

Which would you rather he do?
Aug 4, 2026 10:14 pm
OOC:
Kazzak goes straight to the rogue.
"Dell. Dell. Stay with us. We need you."
OOC:
Everyone: Kazzak has no useful skills for healing — he wants to drag Dell away from danger.

OOC:
I think everyone is admirably roleplaying a lack of medical knowledge. I just want to remind people that mechanically, anyone can use an Action and attempt a Wisdom (Medicine) check at DC 10 to stabilize someone in danger of dying. You don't need proficiency in Medicine, nor do you need a Healer's Kit. And I don't recall any penalties for failing the check, aside from the risk that the person might fail their next death save.

The Healer's Kit just lets you stabilize a creature without needing a check (in addition to the rules that our DM has outlined for gaining HP during rests).

Dell has a healers kit on him with 8 uses left.

OOC:
Kazzak’s next action will be to use the healer’s kit, unless someone else can reach Dell this turn.

Berthold saw the prisoners escaping with stolen items, and saw Dell dying nearby. His thirst for justice was highly tempered by his desire to save his companion’s life. He hesitated a split second.
OOC:
Is Berthold close enough to Dell to move and take an action, or will he need to dash to get there?

Basically, if he can get to Dell and try to save him, he will do so. If he can’t get to Dell I. Time he will try to catch up with the fleeing bandits and recover Antonius’ gear.

matmaisan says:
Basically, if he can get to Dell and try to save him, he will do so. If he can’t get to Dell in time he will try to catch up with the fleeing bandits and recover Antonius’ gear.
OOC:
@matmaisan - While Dell is slightly closer than the bandits (50' rather than 60'), he's still more than 30' away from Berthold, so it will take a Dash for the knight to get to either choice. Both Sora and Kazzak are adjacent to Dell; no one is adjacent to the women and they will get into the trees if they keep running this round (though their location will be obvious and they cannot hide for as long as they keep the shield).
Which one do you choose for Berthold to pursue: tending Dell or catching the bandits?
Aug 6, 2026 6:03 am
Having determined that he would be more helpful in pursuit of the bandits, Berthold rushed off in the direction of the receding light from Antonius’ shield. As he ran towards the two women he called out a warning: "Leave the weapons and I will let you go! Keep them and I will hound you till the end of your days!".
OOC:
Berthold is in no shape to fight off the two women, so he’s in negotiation mode: he will move 30ft and threaten them with pursuit. If they stop and talk, he’s willing to give them a light spell on one of their items, in exchange for recovering the shield and the hammer. If they don’t stop immediately, he will try to catch up to the last of the two this round, and trip or knock her out next round.

Sending an intimidation check, just in case it is useful. Ignore if not.
