mathias0077 says:
Sorry I didn't mention it but Dell would have closed the door behind him.
OOC:
OK, the turn has been amended.
"Everyone get ready to defend if need be." Dell says. "I can lead them away again. I think it is our best chance." Dell moves to the back door, unbars it, opens the door, jumps out, closes the door behind him, and runs off into the darkness. Following the light around to the front of the house, he doesn't trip on anything while he Dashes to reach the corner of the house where he can see the Light coin shining in the yard by the wagon.
...
Ene picks up Final Measure and gets ready to use it.
...
"Hey dead heads!!" Dell yells from the side of the two zombies hammering on the front of the farmhouse. "Remember me!! You ready for round two?"

One of the zombies remains hammering on the door, but the zombie at the window turns and jerks toward him, stumbling forward and lashing out with decaying fists!
Dell takes 7 bludgeoning damage and falls, dying!

"Just Heironeous," Berthold prays under his breath, watching the front door shudder under the blows, "Guide Thine servant’s hand, that they might carry out thine will..."

The front door splits, one fist coming through, but the bar and table together keep the door from falling to pieces.
Morton releases the pent-up demonic energy.
As there is only a small gap in the door, the zombie has 3/4 cover from attacks inside the house.
The zombie at the door takes 10 force damage!

A split second later, Berthold's crossbow bolt threads the needle as well, flitting through the crack in the door to sink into the same zombie!
The zombie at the door takes 5 piercing damage! The hammering on the door ceases as zombie 2 falls!

OOC:
@matmaisan - go ahead and roll Berthold's Readied crossbow attack. I know you said your availability may be spotty during your trip, so I will roll it for you if you don't post by the end of the day.

Everyone (including @matmaisan) post your round two turn. Dell distracted the first zombie away from the window, but now the rogue is down and dying outside, which the people on the ground floor may suspect from his voice cutting off abruptly, but Kazzak saw it happen from the second floor window.
There is a small gap in the front door through which ranged attacks can be made on the second zombie (it has 3/4 cover). Fern and Sora holding the table is keeping the front door closed, and that zombie is not adjacent to any PC to make melee attacks.
Aug 1, 2026 3:38 pm
Sora continues to push against the table with all her might.
Aug 1, 2026 4:21 pm
Amnestria tries to see if there's enough room for both her and Kazzak at the window. If so, she stands shoulder-to-shoulder and aims her wand at the zombie above Dell, launching a Fire Bolt.

Rolls

Fire Bolt vs Zombie1, Fire Damage - (1d20+5, 1d10)

1d20+5 : (7) + 5 = 12

1d10 : (10) = 10

OOC:
Ha, didn't see that coming. Hahaha I would have thought Dell would have kept away as much as possible.

"Just Heironeous guide thine servant’s hand, that they might carry out thine will," he muttered in desperate prayer, as he took aim at the easiest target he could find.

As soon as he took his shot, he proffered the crossbow to Guilbert or Reynald, whichever was closest, with orders to get it loaded and hand it to Sora or any other party member (not the bandit girls) willing to use it. He made ready to collect shield and shining longsword and move to the kitchen door as soon as he could.
OOC:
If Berthold can see the zombie that just downed Dell, he’ll aim at that one. If he can’t, he will take the shot at the zombie at the door.

He plans to do as Dell did, and try to distract them and get them away from the farmhouse, so the others can recover Dell, get him inside, and barricade the farmstead once again.

Propped carefully against the kitchen wall, Antonius remained motionless, bandaged hands resting loosely in his lap. His breathing was slow and steady, untouched by the chaos unfolding around him. His shield, its Light spell still burning steadily across its face, rested in the corner of the kitchen, casting long, shifting shadows over the room. Somewhere beyond, Ene now bore Final Measure in her hands, the cleric's trusted warhammer absent from his side for the first time in many years.

The farmhouse shuddered beneath the relentless pounding of undead fists against doors and shutters, each heavy impact sending dust drifting from the rafters. Raised voices, clashing steel, and the groan of splintering timber echoed through the homestead, yet the unconscious cleric neither stirred nor woke, his mind still wandering far from the desperate battle being fought only a few paces away.

Round Two
(this is preceded by round one, followed by round three)

Amnestria rushes to the northern window, throws open the shutters, and can just see the zombie standing at the corner of the house over Dell, where the rogue fell after Dashing around the building to taunt the zombies. She whips out her wand and casts the familiar spell, sending a gout of flame down at the undead thing.
Zombie 1 takes 10 fire damage!

Fern and Sora relax slightly, now that Zombie 2 has been defeated.

Berthold hands his empty crossbow to Sora, takes up his shield, runs to the back door, throws it open, and runs outside, drawing his sword in the darkness as he shouts over his shoulder: "Guilbert! Bolt the door behind me!" Suddenly Light blossoms in the back, as his glowing blade is revealed. He starts jogging around the house, and rounds the northeast corner. From there he can see Dell collapsed at the opposite corner of the house, about 10 paces (25') away.

In the process of tidying Berthold's armor, Guilbert drops what he's doing and hurries to the back door, closing it and picking up the heavy bar to lay across it. Reynald and Olyena pick up Antonius' body again and carry the death cleric into the bedroom, leaving the injured monk alone with the groomsman, the stranger, and the two bandits. Morton looks at Sora and reminds her: "I saved his life, you know." Fern looks at the open door, clearly thinking of making a run for it again. Would the damned elf stop her again? Ene looks at Sora and Morton, trying to determine which of them is the greater threat.

"He's still in danger," Sora replies to Morton, "As are we all, while the dead still walk. I'll not rest easy tonight." She considers the empty crossbow in her hands. She looks about for bolts for the weapon.

"Better in here than out there," Morton sighs. "My...lady and I were almost killed traveling the Dim Forest yesternight." Wearily he rights a chair and sits down with an exhausted groan. "I hope your friends fare better than we did. Truly." He gets a haunted, faraway look on his face, and speaks softly, more to himself than to Sora, the bandits, or Guilbert. "...I tried so hard to keep her alive, but we kept running into undead, in the forest, and then even in that damned Temple. I...I couldn't save her..." He shakes himself, and looks at Sora again. "I'm sure your friends will be fine."

Unbeknownst to those in the kitchen, Dell is writhing on his back, dying several paces away outside.
Dell fails his death save.

Once started, Morton can't seem to stop talking, he's so relieved to be in light and warmth again after hours of terrified crashing through the woods. "They'll be fine. We just killed that one at the door, and your friends will keep their distance and hit the other one with missiles until...it's...dead..." He trails off, seeing the crossbow in the monk's hands and belatedly realizing that neither of the men who ran out into the darkness had ranged weapons. "Uh...ah...They've already led it away. It'll be fine."

Just then, upstairs, Kazzak looses another crossbow bolt into Zombie 1.
Zombie 1 takes 8 piercing damage!
Kazzak yells "Up here! Start climbing!".

Hearing the yell downstairs, Morton nods. "See? They're fine. They'll climb up, the zombie won't reach us, and we won't even have to unbar the doors." He looks gratefully at Guilbert. "I'm certainly glad to have those doors closed between us and the horrors of the night."

Ene looks sourly at the closed and barred back door; she clearly doesn't agree. She hesitated, and now she's missed her chance to escape. Fern also realizes that they missed their chance. Trying to salvage the situation, she looks at Sora bashfully, and says a little awkwardly, "I...I'm glad you're alive. You...treated us fairly." Angry Ene glowers at the other bandit.

Zombie 1, with no way of getting to the people in the windows above it and seeing the Light of Berthold's sword, staggers toward the knight, Dashing to reach him.

"He's still in danger," Sora grunts, "As are we all, while the dead still walk. I'll not rest easy tonight." She considers the crossbow in her hands. She looks about for bolts for the weapon. If she finds any, she will load the crossbow and aim at the zombie.

Berthold prepares to run in circles around the last zombie until his companions have felled him with ranged fire.
OOC:
Berthold’s main concern is to end his turn at least 30ft away from the zombie, so it has to dash to get to him. He wants to distract the zombie and have it following him at least 60ft from the house so others can get to Dell and save him.

Berthold’s blade had light cast on it. Has the spell faded?

Antonius remained deeply asleep as careful hands carried him from the kitchen into the downstairs bedroom, laying him gently upon the bed. His bandaged chest rose and fell in a slow, even rhythm, oblivious to the hurried voices, the creak of floorboards, and the fading echoes of battle elsewhere in the homestead. Though his body had been moved, his mind never left the quiet halls of his dream.

The endless chamber of black marble still stretched before him, lit by rows of ruby candles whose flames burned without heat or smoke. The measured tolling of the unseen bell continued at long intervals, each note resonating through the polished stone with calm inevitability.

Then something changed.

Soft footsteps echoed where before there had been only silence.

Antonius turned to see another figure walking the hall—not a spirit nor a priest, but Dell. He appeared not as flesh and blood, but as one invited into the dream, his form slightly indistinct at the edges, as though seen through morning mist. Yet there was purpose in his stride, familiar enough that Antonius felt neither surprise nor alarm.

The hall remained silent, waiting.
The bell did not toll.

It was as if even Wee Jas had paused to witness what would pass between the two companions before the dream continued.

OOC:
@matmaisan - No, that was my oversight; I'll amend my descriptions. Given that he doesn't need the Light from inside, do you want Berthold to take the time to close the door behind him?

OOC:
I think it would be more in character for him to bark orders at Guilbert to close and bar the door behind him. He has a sense of urgency that would not have him slowing down to close the door…

"By the Great Forge...," Kazzak whispers a curse after his bolt fails to down its target. He tries to give the zombie something to focus on -- do they focus? -- besides Dell and Berthold. "Up here! Start climbing!"

Kazzak has no idea how much the zombie understands as his fingers clench another bolt. It's worth a try.
