Chapter 4.2: The Dim Journey to Orlane

Speaking calmly after a protracted moment of silence the knight inquired "You have not answered my first question: did you see the other Dungeon Busters get defeated, killed or caught? And why did you leave them when you did? Tell us what happened, so that those of us who mistrust you have cause to believe in you."

His tone is cold but not threatening. He looks at Dell, to make sure the young man, probably overwhelmed with unspoken concern for his brother, will not actually draw a weapon. He also feels Sora’s frustration, but hopes that refocusing the conversation, as Amnestria had wisely suggested, will help get to the bottom of the situation.

Bandages now bind the worst of Antonius' wounds, the reopened scar across his face cleaned and wrapped with practiced care. His breathing is slow and even, his heartbeat steady beneath the stained vestments. Though he does not stir upon the kitchen table, the desperate struggle between life and death has passed. For now, his body rests.
His mind drifts elsewhere.

He dreams of polished black marble beneath his bare feet, stretching into a vast hall lit by countless ruby candles whose flames neither flicker nor cast heat. Silence reigns, broken only by the measured tolling of a distant temple bell. Each note echoes through the chamber with calm inevitability—not a summons, nor a warning, but a reminder that every soul has its appointed hour.

Antonius walks alone, his warhammer absent from his side, his armour replaced by the simple vestments of his faith. Along the walls stand countless names, carved with perfect precision into crimson-veined stone: kings beside paupers, saints beside murderers, all equal before the final ledger.
He pauses before an empty space.

The polished surface reflects only his own face, the familiar scar unbroken, unmarred by blood. No name is etched there. Not yet.

A quiet certainty settles over him. His Lady has not forgotten him, nor has she called him home. The account of Antonius Block remains unfinished.
With that thought, the bell's final note fades into silence, and the cleric sleeps on peacefully, his steady breathing the only sign to his companions that, for now at least, death has passed him by.

The group is deep in this heated discussion when there is renewed banging on the front door and shutters, making Ene and Fern jump. The zombies have made their slow way back, following the sounds of raised voices. The already-damaged shutters crack, barely holding together. The door shudders in its frame.
OOC:
You don't need to roll initiative; the PCs will go before the slow undead.

Rolls

Zombie slam on the shutters - (1d6+1)

(2) + 1 = 3

Zombie slam on the front door - (1d6+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

OOC:
I’m assuming Berthold hasn’t had the time finish donning his armour as the discussion was underway.
"Let’s handle the one by the shutters first," the knight stated levelly, as he grabbed his heavy crossbow once again. "Those who are not ready to fight, help block the door, get Antonius on the floor and use the kitchen table. Kazzak, if it manages to get in, you and I will take it down."

Amnestria jumps at the loud crack of zombie fists upon wood, embarrassed at herself for falling into the false sense of security Morton had already chastised the team about. She hurries upstairs to the north bedroom to open the window above the front door, trying to see if there's a top-down view of the zombies below.

Grallaria will rejoin the wizard once her meal is finished and the window opened, ready to fly outside and assist.
OOC:
Dash upstairs to open the window. I assume both zombies are near the front door?

rpgventurer says:
"Antonius and Sora are safe and stable now," Kazzak says to Dell. "

Then he says to the others, "The zombies may return. I will keep watch out the window."
OOC:
I should've written which window. In my head, I wanted Kazzak to go to the window in the north bedroom upstairs, since Dell came in through the front door. May Kazzak take a shot a zombie with his light crossbow?
Jul 29, 2026 8:37 pm
Dell will quickly head to the kitchen door."Everyone get ready to defend if need be. I can lead them away again. I think it is our best chance." He will slip outside with his rapier in hand and make a wide circle around the house to the front. He will dash bye the zombies and
pick up the coin and take with him"Hey dead heads!! Remember me!! You ready for round two?"
OOC:

OOC:
@rpgventurer Sure, go ahead and roll the attack. You and @CancerMan will need to decide which window your characters are using. Either window would allow Kazzak to see the zombies' approach and make an attack before they reach the front of the house. The window in the north wall would require leaning out a bit, which is fine, but once they arrive at the house, they can't be seen from that window anymore. The window over the front door is in the west wall, but as we've said before, there is a small overhang over the front door (what Amnestria was considering climbing out onto, and which the zombie bounced off of when it was shoved out the window). Unfortunately, this blocks view of the zombies once they reach the house.

Kazzak can take the west window for his attack. We'll just say that Amnestria had the same idea, and once she sees Kazzak is there she will change her mind to return downstairs in the next turn.

Morton
When the hammering on the house begins, Morton jumps. He recalls how bright it is from that coin outside. "Of course they found us. They seem drawn to the light as well as sound." He grimaces, remembering how close he and Arya came to death at the hands of zombies almost exactly a day ago, right after she cast Light. He looks at the room; surely everyone can be united against the horror of undeath. At Berthold's suggestion, Morton nods. "I know you may not trust me. But we must work together to survive, and later I can answer questions. I will help however I can. Move the body, hold the door, or I can blast them as soon as we can see them." He looks for Kazzak for confirmation, but the dwarf - his only non-bandit eyewitness to the aid he can provide - has already gone upstairs. "...just like I did before." He faces the front of the house and prepares to call upon the dark forces in defense of the living once again.
OOC:
Question for @mathias0077 - Dell brought in the shield and hammer. The shield is providing light for everyone in this room, so I assume it's laid atop Antonius on the table. Where did Dell put the war hammer?

As Dell sneaks out the back door, Ene inches over in that direction, clearly tempted to bolt again herself now that the elf's attention is elsewhere.

Fern throws her weight against the front door, augmenting the bar holding it closed.

Guilbert sets aside the remaining armor. Though Morton mentioned helping with 'the body,' the knight's retainers have already sprung into action. Olyena leans Antonius' shield against the wall so that its light still illuminates the room. Reynald grabs unconscious Antonius under his arms and begins to lift him down to the floor; Olyena quickly grabs his legs and then the tiny gnome almost drops the cleric, unprepared for his heavy weight. In the end, they get him settled more or less comfortably off to one side so that people are unlikely to trip on him and the table is free for others to use. If the group survives long enough, they will move the death worshipper to the bedroom.

@spaceseeker19 He laid the war hammer beside him on the table.

Kazzak is upstairs in the north bedroom. When he opens the shutter again, he just catches a glimpse of a zombie jerking its way into cover under the overhang. He's already brought his crossbow up and triggered the release. The bolt thuds into the body before it disappears from view.
The zombie takes 7 piercing damage!

The pounding on the window shutter and front door begins.

Round One
(this is followed by round two)

Ene, Fern, and Morton all jump when the battering starts. "Of course they found us." Morton says, "They seem to be drawn to the light as well as sound."

"Let’s handle the one by the shutters first," the knight stated levelly, as he grabbed his heavy crossbow once again. "Those who are not ready to fight, help block the door, get Antonius on the floor and use the kitchen table. If it manages to get in, we will take it down."
OOC:
@matmaisan - note that I edited the text slightly, since Kazzak is not there.
Berthold Readies a crossbow attack.

Without a word, Amnestria hurries upstairs to join Kazzak and to see if she can assess how many attackers are outside.

"Everyone get ready to defend if need be." Dell says. "I can lead them away again. I think it is our best chance." Dell moves to the back door, unbars it, opens the door, jumps out, closes the door behind him, and runs off into the darkness. Following the light around to the front of the house, he doesn't trip on anything while he Dashes to reach the corner of the house where he can see the Light coin shining in the yard by the wagon.

"I know you may not trust me." Morton says to the people still in the room (Sora, Berthold, Olyena, Fern, Reynald, Ene, and Guilbert), "But we must work together to survive, and later I can answer questions. I will help however I can. Move the body, hold the door, or I can blast them as soon as we can see them." He looks around for Kazzak, who can confirm how useful he was in fighting the zombies earlier, but the dwarf is gone. "...just like I did before." Seeing that Olyena and Reynald are already moving Antonius' unconscious body, Morton turns to the door, but Fern is already holding the door. He raises his hands, Readying an Eldritch Blast.

Ene picks up Final Measure and gets ready to use it.

Antonius dreams of sacred halls.

Now that Antonius' body has been moved, Sora drags the table over to the front door; Fern moves out of the way and helps the Earthshaker monk shove the table against the portal.

"Hey dead heads!!" Dell yells from the side of the two zombies hammering on the front of the farmhouse. "Remember me!! You ready for round two?"

One of the zombies remains hammering on the door, but the zombie at the window turns and jerks toward him, stumbling forward and lashing out with decaying fists!
Dell takes 7 bludgeoning damage and falls, dying!

The front door splits, one fist coming through, but the bar and table together keep the door from falling to pieces.
Morton releases the pent-up demonic energy.
As there is only a small gap in the door, the zombie has 3/4 cover from attacks inside the house.
The zombie at the door takes 10 force damage!

A split second later, Berthold's crossbow bolt threads the needle as well, flitting through the crack in the door to sink into the same zombie!
The zombie at the door takes 5 piercing damage! The hammering on the door ceases as zombie 2 falls!
Amnestria (9/9) and Grallaria (1/1) upstairs
Antonius (0/10) Stable downstairs
Berthold (1/11) downstairs
Dell (0/9) outside, dying

Bandit Fern downstairs

@mathias0077 - The zombies can still hear people inside. Roll a CHR (Performance) check to see how well Dell draws their attention away again.

@WhtKnt - Sora is inside. Berthold and Morton have Readied ranged attacks, Fern is holding the door, but no one is holding or opening the window shutters, and there are two zombies just outside the front. The back door is open. Please post what Sora is doing this first round.
Jul 30, 2026 6:47 pm
Sora struggles to her feet and helps move the table to reinforce the front door. Once that has been done, she will help move Antonius.
