Round Ten
(this is preceded by round nine)

Antonius glances over his shoulder to see the new arrival. "Berthold and Kazzak - be ready. I'm drawing it away from the house."

But before he can act, Kazzak strides across the room, pushes past Antonius, and throws open the front door. Stepping out into the yard, he plunges three feet of steel into the zombie, Don.
Don takes 10 slashing damage and collapses!
"Spells and swords." Kazzak says, looking at the motionless corpse. "It seems we need both to fell these creatures. I hope the one in the back is the last of them."

Zombie Dean continues to batter on the kitchen door at the back of the house!

Sora dreams of someone coming to heal her back to consciousness.

Upstairs, Amnestria continues to sit, unresponsive, with her eyes rolled back in her head. Reynald and Olyena watch her nervously as the wizard continues her monologue.

"Don is down!" Antonius calls to all within earshot, naming the abomination that has been defeated. "I'm drawing the other one away!" With blazing shield in one hand and Final Measure in the other, the cleric of death follows Kazzak out the front door, then continues rushing north and east around the corner of the house. Knowing that a zombie is at the back door, he angles toward the well, increasing the distance between them as he rounds the corner and comes into "view" of the dead thing. He turns and takes a resolute pose, shield raised to cast light across the farm, haft of the warhammer thudding into the dirt, as he addresses the zombie. "Dean!" he shouts, giving this undead thing a name, too. "The living you seek stand before you! Leave this house and face the judgment of Wee Jas!"

Meanwhile, in the deep darkness of the forest, Morton can easily follow the path that Fern has taken. "Stop!" he yells, thinking ::Hell of a way to get a point across:: as he prepares to knock her down. The shove in her back causes her to stumble, but Fern doesn't go down. Possibly shouting the warning at her gave her advance warning of how close he was to attacking her, or she was just better able to hear him following her than Ene was.

Dell changes direction and slows, moving more quietly through the thick branches and fallen twigs of the undergrowth. He can still hear the zombies some distance behind him, but he also hears the yelling in the trees to the southeast. This yelling is the same voice - a stranger, or some casual acquaintance from Hochoch - that Dell heard earlier.

As Grallaria flies, Amnestria narrates what she sees to the servants. "She's flying back out of the barn now. Ene is still on the ground; is she dead? The elf who struck her is gone, but there's a lot of noise off in the trees. Now she's circling over the wagon back to the house. I can see Kazzak standing over a zombie by the front door, now she's going over the top of the house. Will we...yes...she's circling back...yes, that same zombie is still trying to break into the back door. I don't see any others."

Seeing that his companions are handling the closest threat, Berthold sets the crossbow down as he kneels at Sora's side. Touching her forehead with one hand, his other fingers absently touched the mummified fingers hanging from the cord at his neck. Berthold feels the approving presence of Valandras, and a bit of his energy flows into the fallen monk.
Sora gains 1 HP and is conscious again!

Peering through the gaps in the pile of armor he carries, Guilbert watches his master heal his comrade with pride. ::Dunsdales take care of their own::

Attacked from behind, Fern blindly spins around and stabs at Morton with Dell's dagger! "I'm not going to be a prisoner ever again!" Morton is bemused at the clumsy attack, watching from one side as she stabs and slashes and talks to the empty air.

rpgventurer says:
Is Kazzak aware of Morton's presence in the area?
OOC:
Yes. Not only did Kazzak see Morton in round seven, everyone has heard his shouted conversation with Dell (and, more recently, his shouts at the bandits). Nobody knows who he is, of course, but everyone in the party (aside from unconscious Sora) knows he's around.

OOC:
@Mathfuric - unfortunately, once again your turn was superseded by another PC going earlier in initiative. The zombie you were going to have Antonius engage - Don - has just been defeated. As an alternative, Antonius could open a rear window's shutter, lean out, and cast Toll the Dead on Dean. Or he could proceed out the front door and Dash around the house to issue his verbal challenge to Dean, trying to draw him away from the back door and prepare to cast Toll the Dead next turn. Or he could do something else, of course.

Situation: Antonius is standing over Sora by the front window that is no longer being battered, a step away from the front door. Berthold and Guilbert have just entered the room from upstairs. Kazzak is outside the front door, having just stopped Don. Dean is battering at the back door, which is beginning to splinter despite being barred on the inside. What would you like to do?

First one was bad enough. But given time, this person will figure out a means to stab him if he doesn't do something about this. He so much wished that she could have been just knocked down. He notes that unlike the other one she at least has a weapon. 'Nothing ever goes simple'

He firmly tells her, "I offer you my protection & not to be a prisoner." and adds on with some urgency, "Agree now or you will uselessly die by Zombies tonight!" as he uselessly stares at her and wonders, 'Why she was a prisoner. Perhaps that explains her bolting from the barn. Is the other one a prisoner too?'

Still trying to sway her to his side, "You are defenseless with that dagger. as he moves about a bit to avoid her focusing well on his voice as she still may be trying to stab him.

One more time, "I'm sir Morton and you will be under my full protection. Let me lead you to Zombie free safety."

If blind her agrees, demonic Morton will lead her back hopefully stumble free to the lite barn/farmhouse area where Ene is. He will not remove the dagger from her possession or even ask for it. He can only hope she doesn't bolt and really ready to just trip her should she look like she is making a break for it.

When Half Wood Elf Morton finally break into light, he makes sure he slightly puffed up and a bit more regal despite how bad he is feeling right now. He is so dam tired & his belly is fighting with his chest as to which one hurts more. His legs are so tired too from the march getting here. SLEEP! He puts on this ever so winning & cheesy smile. Professional him well knows how to appear friendly.

He does well to ignore that hideous laugh he feels/hears in his mind. And a nice brisk run has removed his brimstone scent for a bit. Does make presenting himself easier without it.

5' to get out the front door, then 10' north to the corner and 20' east across the depth of the house means it takes Antonius 35' to get eyes on Dean at the back door. Let's say he steps back (northeast) from the house and from Dean 25' to finish his Dash, so that Antonius ends just at the 40' limit of Dean's Move and Dash (by the garden and the well) to issue his bold challenge.

@CancerMan,@rpgventurer,@matmaisan,@Mathfuric,@WhtKnt,@mathias0077 - go ahead and post your round eleven turns now.
Kazzak is just outside the front door and has just watched Antonius run past him; he sees no other zombies, but he does see Ene lying in the dirt ~35' away west, past the wagon and toward the trees.
Sora is conscious in the farmhouse with 1 HP. Berthold is kneeling next to her in about the same shape, with Guilbert standing behind him, arms full of heavy armor. The front door is open, the back door is barred and getting battered by a zombie (Dean) outside.
Amnestria has extended her senses to Grallaria the owl, who is perched on the edge of the roof above the zombie (Dean) at the back door.
Antonius is outside, 40' away from the zombie (Dean), near the Jarls' well and garden, drawing the zombie's attention.
Dell is focused on the sounds of Morton talking to Fern, as he is following those sounds to navigate blindly through the forest away from the two zombies he led astray (Dina and Dvan).
@WanderOne Morton did notice the owl, earlier. Go ahead and roll CHR (Intimidation) - appropriate to the argument that Fern will die without help. I will also say that you can roll the STR (Athletics) to trip her if she's not convinced.

Morton is very intimidating with a natural ** 20 **. She might have nightmares... Poor Fern

"Take a moment to get your bearings, Sora. We are still under attack, but for now, the house is secure" the Knight added, being immediately contradicted by the sound of splintering wood coming from the back (kitchen) door. "We're going to handle this," he stated, standing up with the loaded heavy crossbow in his hands.

"Guilbert, set the armour down. You'll need your hands to close the door," he said calmly, with a faint (and he hoped, reassuring) smile, nodding with his head to the front door.

He moved to the back door and looked for the closest shutters while Antonius, outside, tried to divert the zombie's attention. He made ready to open the shutters and shoot at the zombie, if he could see it.
OOC:
Not sure how much can be done in round 11. Besides speaking he would like to move to the door/shutter and make ready to fire. If opening the shutter would take an action, he will do so and step back 5ft or so. If it can be done as a bonus action, or as part of his move, he'll open the shutter and shoot if the target is visible. Sending an attack roll in case it is necessary.

I tried looking back through the forum, but am I right in knowing that Amnestria's window overlooking the wagon and barn is above the back door? If that is the case, is the door directly underneath the window, or is there an angle in which someone looking out the window can see Dean?
Amnestria thanks Grallaria for keeping still, and asks that their shared senses continue to keep track of the last visible zombie by the back door. She verbally reports on the state of the door itself, warning that it appears ready to break.

The wizard ignores the whereabouts of Dell and the others supposedly still outside; the young watchman said he worked well alone, so she just has to trust that he knows what he's doing.

As for the bandits and that strange elf? They're not as important right now as the imminent zombie breach.

Not knowing (and not really caring) if the prisoner he sees lying in the dirt is dead or not, Kazzak tends to the only threat he knows about and runs to the front of the house. He does nothing to attract the zombie's attention. May the righteous gods guide my sword.
OOC:
Action: Move and Dash, positioning himself (if possible) 25' from Dean but not blocking Antonius' line of sight.
Jul 16, 2026 9:38 pm
Sora does as she is instructed, staying put for now.
Jul 16, 2026 10:33 pm
Dell will continue to move laterally as quiet as possible. These zombies must be able to sense the living because there is no way they would have known he and the girls were in the stall otherwise. Hearing the sound of someone yelling helps him keep his bearings. But he can't turn back yet he doesn't feel as if he is far enough away from the dead heads.

Antonius actions will depend on whether Zombie Dean can reach him or not. If Dean dashes and is face to face with Antonius, then he’ll attempt to knock the zombie over.
If Dean falls short of the Cleric, he will cast Toll the Dead and retreat.

Guys, I really apologize at how much I misjudged the complexity of this encounter. This has really impressed upon me the NEED to provide a map for every encounter, even ones I think are going to be trivial. I described the layout back in APRIL, thinking that we'd be done with this fight in two weeks, tops. I will always provide a map in the future. Everything takes longer than it should, and something posted today won't be obvious weeks later.

Three weeks ago, I provided the map of the farm's layout, but here it is again for reference:

CancerMan says:

OOC:
As I said, it's been months (and two encounters) since I provided the initial description, so no shame in not keeping this straight.

No, the room Amnestria is in is the "north bedroom" of the three bedrooms on the second floor; the window overlooks the front yard. That's why the front yard has been illuminated by the coin she threw out the window.

Here is the layout of the farmhouse as I've described it:
https://i.imgur.com/sd0gP2k.png
The walls are orange. The doors are brown. The windows are turquoise (though they have no glass, only wooden shutters). The fireplace/chimney is red. The stairs should be obvious.

At the end of round ten:
Amnestria, Reynald, and Olyena are in the north bedroom.
Grallaria is on the roof above the back door.
Morton and Fern are in the woods west of the farm.
Dell, Dina, and Dvan are in the woods northwest of the farm (though Dell is pretty far away from them).
Antonius is by the well.
Kazzak is outside the front door.
Sora, Berthold, and Guilbert are in the kitchen/dining room.
Jul 17, 2026 5:06 pm
OOC:
Thank you. The map is what I had in my head, but I was mistaken in recalling which door was front and which was back. Amnestria's action to continue using Grallaria's eyes and ears will continue.

Round Eleven
(this is preceded by round ten, followed by round twelve)

"Take a moment to get your bearings, Sora." Berthold says to the newly-conscious monk. "We are still under attack, but for now, the house is secure."

Just outside, Kazzak jogs after Antonius, Dashing to the rear of the house and take up a similar position to the death cleric: far enough away that the undead thing cannot reach him to attack this round.

The zombie (Dean) turns away from the back door, attracted by the sound, light, and motion of the cleric Antonius. Moving jerkily, the corpse twitches across the yard past the well and moves adjacent to the cleric.

Dvan continues to smash through the undergrowth in pursuit of Dell, with Dina follows after the sound.

Still on the floor in the kitchen, Sora takes some shaky, deep breaths.

Blind and deaf to her surroundings, Amnestria continues narrating the owl's perceptions to the knight's servants in the north bedroom with her.

"So be it," Antonius says quietly, settling his stance. "Your restless march ends here." So saying, he brings his warhammer, Final Measure, cracking down on the corpse.
Dean takes 5 bludgeoning damage!
Bones snap with the impact; these twitching, jerking undead are easy to strike, but how do you kill something that's already dead?

Continuing to easily avoid the bandit's blind flailing, Morton leans in and coos in her ear. "I offer you my protection & not to be a prisoner." Then he steps around her and growls from her other side. "Agree now or you will uselessly die by Zombies tonight!" This reminder deflates Fern; she knows very well what terrors lurk in the forest, and her unsuccessful attempts to stab this person are forcing her to acknowledge how helpless she would be against undead and other things that don't make as much noise. She lowers Dell's dagger in surrender. ::Better a clean death than getting eaten. And if this guy is with the others, maybe I can distract them long enough to make sure that Ene gets away...::
"I'm Sir Morton and you will be under my full protection." The elf says, with a light touch on Fern's elbow to get the bandit girl walking back toward the distant light of the farm. "Let me lead you to zombie-free safety." Moving back through the underbrush that was broken and trampled from their earlier flight, Morton leads Fern back to the edge of the Jarl farm, where they can dimly make out Ene's prostrate form still lying in the dirt. Fern gives a small gasp and tenses.

Dell can see faint light off to his left as he tries to move carefully and quietly through the thick undergrowth. He winces with each snap of a twig or crunch of a leaf.

Upstairs in the house, Amnestria narrates: "Kazzak is running into view. Antonius is putting on quite a show; he has the zombie's attention. The dead thing is turning and moving away from the door toward him."

Berthold hears the zombie pounding on the door stop. "We're going to handle this," he assures Sora, standing up with the loaded heavy crossbow in his hands. To Guilbert he nods over his shoulder. "Guilbert, set the armour down. You'll need your hands to close the door." Then Berthold crosses the room, opens the shutters on the window, and leans out to take aim at the zombie as it walks toward Antonius. He releases the bolt, which thunks into the zombie's back. The head of the bolt punches through its chest.
Dean takes 5 piercing damage!
But it keeps moving.

Guilbert hastily sets the armor down on the table and closes the front door.

Ene rolls over with a groan and smiles when she sees Fern at the edge of the magical light. Then she frowns at the sight of Morton at her friend's side. Fern says: "Are you well?"
Ene sits up and nods. "So far..."
As she tucks the dagger into her clothes, Fern explains "We can't leave now, without light. We can't see where we're going, and there are many unseen dangers in the woods."
"Who is this elf?" Ene frowns as she dusts herself off and gets back to her feet.
"He says he's 'Sir Morton,' and he's here to protect us."
Ene says nothing more than her skeptical look expresses already.
"You'll be in that building there," Morton asserts, pointing at the farmhouse, "under my protection."

Sir Morton listens to the two as if he wasn't there. It bemuses him some as he notes not having to trip an escaping Fern which he considered as a result when she could at least see some light. Ah yes, he thinks, "They are a pair of prisoners it seems, but they don't look like such. Something is amiss." Nice to see Ede hasn't moved from where he cheap shotted her.

He considers, "Well they understand that travel in the night blindly is not favorable." He says to them as he hears their banter, he says such in an authoritive tone, "You will be in that building there under my protection." with hopes of settling the matter. He continues a high position as it is the only way he figures to influence them. Of course, he will still have to deal with those of the building, but all appearances indicate they aren't the owners.
