OOC:
Sorry for the slow post.
As Duke finally crumples into the dirt, Antonius wastes no time watching the corpse settle. Dell's desperate cry from the barn cuts through the chaos of battle, followed moments later by Berthold's rallying call from within the farmhouse. The knight still lived. Sora did not have long.

The cleric's eyes dart across the battlefield, rapidly weighing his choices. Kazzak remained steadfast, the dwarf more than capable of holding the remaining dead for a few precious moments. Elsewhere, the fight was slipping away.

"Wee Jas, preserve him," Antonius murmurs, uncertain whether the prayer is meant for Berthold, Sora, or perhaps himself.

With a final glance to Kazzak, he gives a sharp nod. "Hold them!"

Keeping his glowing shield raised toward the remaining undead, Antonius begins to give ground. He does not turn his back on the shambling corpses; instead, he retreats with measured, disciplined steps, warhammer held ready to intercept any grasping limb that reaches for him. Every instinct from his years in the Watch tells him how dangerous it is to withdraw from an enemy already within arm's reach, yet remaining here could cost another companion their life.

His heart pounds against his ribs as he shifts his footing, carefully seeking the smallest opening between the undead. The movement is deliberate, but not without risk. He can feel the dead closing after him, their rotten hands clawing through the night air as he commits himself to breaking away from the melee.
OOC:
I will have to retreat without using disengagement in order to use Spare the Dying, so @spaceseeker19 can you roll an attack before I finish my post please.

Dell will continue to lead the two off with him."This way dead heads. Look at this juicy living flesh." He will keep out of their reach and lead them back into the Dim a bit. Once he gets them in the dim and heading away from the farm he will go into stealth mode and swing back around to the homestead.
OOC:
I will lead the zombies 100 yds into the dim before I double back. Do you want the stealth roll or when I go to lose them?

OOC:
I know Kazzak's turn is done. This is flavor text.
Without looking at Antonius, Kazzak's response is terse and loud. "Yes! Go!" Meanwhile, he raps his sword on his shield with a rhythmic motion, hoping to distract Dean.

Round seven, Antonius' turn.

"Wee Jas, preserve him," Antonius murmurs, and steps away from Kazzak and Dean toward the house. "Hold them!" The last remaining zombie in that melee, Dean, takes a swipe at the cleric of death as he leaves. Antonius sees the swing well in advance and easily steps out of its way.
OOC:
@Mathfuric - go ahead and post the rest of your turn. The fastest/shortest route is in the back door of the farmhouse, straight through the main room, and out the front door to reach Sora where she is dying on the ground.

19 - Kazzak (12/12)
18 - The dead Dave (Dead), Dean (-15), Dina (-62), Don (-35), Duke (Dead), Dvan
16 - Sora (0/12) Dying two failures

OOC:
@mathias0077 - Either is fine: if you want to do the roll now and take a break for a few days, fine, or if you want to wait until the round Dell would actually hide, that's fine, too.

Note that I say "a few days" because 100 yards will take a long time: that's five rounds of using your Move and Dash, then a round to Hide with a Move, then another five rounds to return (though in that eleventh round, Dell wouldn't have to Dash: he'd be back where he started with just a Move). Of course, if he Moves and Dashes, he'll outdistance the zombies very quickly - he'll be increasing the distance from them 20' further every turn (these zombies have a Speed of 20). And that's all for Dell to move 100 yards; for the zombies to move 100 yards, it'll take them eight rounds outbound. It might be faster to take a couple of rounds to get far enough ahead that you can then attack with a bow without them being able to catch up, and in that way whittle them down to second death.

The zombie's grasping hands sweep through the space Antonius had occupied only a heartbeat before. Anticipating the clumsy strike, the cleric pivots cleanly aside, the blow passing harmlessly across the light spilling from his shield. Without breaking stride, he offers a grim smile.

"You'll have your rest soon enough."

With that, he turns and runs.
His boots thunder across the rear porch and through the kitchen doorway, the enchanted shield casting dancing light through the fog that lingers in the farmhouse. The room bears fresh signs of the night's struggle—splintered furniture, blood upon the floorboards, and scorched timbers. Antonius scarcely slows as he passes through, his eyes instinctively checking each doorway for movement before driving onward toward the front entrance.

As he bursts through the front door, the scene before him hardens his resolve. Sora lies motionless upon the ground, her breathing shallow, while the battle continues around her.

"No... not today."

Dropping to one knee beside the fallen monk, Antonius rests two fingers gently upon her brow and traces the ruby sigil of Wee Jas across her forehead. His voice falls to a calm, reverent whisper.

"Lady of the Ruby Throne, this soul's hour has not yet come. Hold her upon the threshold, and deny death its claim."

A faint crimson radiance flows from his fingertips into Sora before fading as quickly as it appeared. Satisfied that the monk's life has been anchored once more, Antonius immediately looks toward the bound bandits nearby.

"Fern!" he calls, meeting the woman's eyes despite the chaos around them. "If you seek to prove there is more to you than banditry, help me. Grab her shoulders—we're getting her inside."

Without waiting to see whether she obeys, Antonius slips his arms beneath Sora's shoulders, preparing to drag the unconscious monk back through the doorway and into the relative shelter of the farmhouse.
OOC:
Antonius will use whatever movement he has left to starting dragging Sora.

Round seven, revised

Antonius rushes through the fog, and only realizes that he has proceeded out the front door when the quality of the sound of his footfalls stops echoing, right before he finds himself at the edge of the wagon. He turns north and bursts out of the fog, finding Sora writhing on the ground just a couple of paces beyond. "No... not today." He slides to a stop on his knees, channeling the power of Wee Jas into the dying monk with a gentle hand. "Lady of the Ruby Throne, this soul's hour has not yet come. Hold her upon the threshold, and deny death its claim."
Antonius casts Spare the Dying and Sora is no longer dying. Antonius looks around; there is no sign of who hurt the woman. Dell is long gone, the zombies following him into the darkness. The light from Antonius' shield illuminates part of the interior of the barn, up to the side of the closest stall. He cannot see the prisoners struggling in another stall, though he believes that they are there, still bound hand and foot.
OOC:
This is the promised revision to Fern and Ene's turn.
Ene uses her Action to loosen the ropes on Fern's ankles, freeing her. Then she uses her Move to stand up and wriggle free of the rope wrapped around her own legs.
Fern steps out of the stall, sees that the zombie is nowhere near, and gestures to Ene: "Now's our chance - this way!" She heads south out of the barn but draws up short as she sees the armored figure of Antonius kneeling over Sora. She is torn between fleeing and staying to ensure Ene has a chance. "Fern!" Antonius calls to the bandit woman with the dagger in her hand, "If you seek to prove there is more to you than banditry, help me." A life of betrayals and broken promises from family and friends luring her with requests to "help" does not incline her to trust this morbid clergyman.

Fern rabbits away, praying as she goes that both Ene and helpless Sora (who was almost kind to her) will escape predation. She is also grateful for Dell dropping the knife that she holds: Fern hopes that the rogue won't die for his kindness, but when has hope ever done anyone any good? Fern figures she just might survive the night with his dagger in hand.

Round Eight
(this is preceded by round seven, followed by round nine)

Kazzak continues to tap his sword on his shield, though perhaps now he is mocking his last opponent, Dean the zombie. He steps away from the clumsy corpse and hurries into the thick fog still filling the farmhouse. He feels for the door and swings it shut, leaning his considerable weight against it to hold the door closed.

After Kazzak leaves, Dean dithers. Then the zombie jerks and stumbles after the dwarf, moving toward the foggy interior of the farmhouse, too. Dean Dashes in an attempt to catch up to the fighter, but pushes up against the door that Kazzak is holding closed. It begins to bash on the door. Grallaria reports to Amnestria that ::all the Big People are leaving::

Upstairs in the farmhouse, flanked by two Dungeon Busters, Don picks a target. Jerking around in a circle, its flailing arms batter the wizard, who casts Shield to block the blows! The zombie's arms stop just short of her face, slamming into the invisible barrier!

Out in the woods, Dina and Dvan continue pursuing Dell deeper into the pitch-black Dim Forest. At the end of their turns of Move and Dash, Dvan is 30' away from the rogue, and Dina is 50' away.

No longer dying, Sora moans loudly in Antonius' arms. "Only one..." Antonius mutters as watches Fern run toward the woods, wondering how she got a dagger and whether Ene still lives. "Where are you hiding?"

Upstairs in the farmhouse, Berthold addresses Amnestria: "Dame Elyphara, please step aside. Our guest has overstayed his welcome." "Whatever you're doing," Amnestria says to Berthold, despite being pretty sure she understands his intent, "do it now!" She's so sure that she drops down to her hands and knees in front of the open window.

Down in the yard, Antonius drags Sora's body back into the fog, hoping that he's right in thinking that Ene is already gone, and not waiting in the mist to stick him with a knife. He's grateful that the monk wears no armor; the backpack and the bag of brewing supplies are heavy enough. Feeling his way along the side of the house, he finds the open front door and hikes the dwarf woman's heels over the threshold. Then he sits Sora up so that she is leaning against the wall, and closes both the front door and the window shutters over her head. Behind him, Antonius hears a struggle of a body hitting wood (Kazzak holding the back door against Dean) and calls out "Kazzak! Answer me! Is that you, or one of the dead?" Kazzak replies: "It’s Kazzak! There’s still a zombie outside the door! He can’t get in right now!"

Seeing that the zombie is trying to follow the dwarf into the farmhouse, Morton continues for the barn, crashing through the plants and Dashing to emerge out of the fields, cross past the well, and arrive at the corner of the barn. From here, he sees the open barn doors, a fog bank partially obscuring a wagon, and a woman (Fern) running full-tilt for the woods. He can hear the person who shouted before (Dell) still making noise in the northern woods on the other side of the barn, and Morton hears the raised voices of four people in the farmhouse (Amnestria, Berthold, Kazzak and Antonius having different conversations).

Dell reminisces about night hunting with Chase as he continues blindly smashing through the undergrowth of the Dim Forest to make noise and keep ahead of the two zombies, Dina and Dvan, to lead them away from the Jarl homestead. It's a novel experience, trying to draw attention rather than being as silent as possible...but he can hardly help it, as Dell can't see anything in the darkness. Luckily the zombies are no quieter than he is, crashing through the foliage, so the rogue knows where they are behind him. At the end of his turn, Dell is 90' ahead of Dvan, and 110' ahead of Dina.

Grallaria the owl lands on the roof and keeps her eyes on the back of the house, watching Dean hammering on the closed back door below her.

Inside and on the second floor, with the great set-up of the wizard, Berthold tries to shove Don so that the zombie will trip over Amnestria and fall out the window. "Reynald!" the knight calls to his squire behind the closed southern bedroom door, "Get ready to bring the crossbow here as soon as I tell you to!" Zombie Don attempts to resist going out the window (contested Athletics). But the shove is too hard, and the wizard too much of an obstacle; Don's upper corpse continues forward as Amnestria blocks its legs, and the zombie falls forward out of the window, momentum and gravity taking it the rest of the way out. Its body falls and disappears into the fog, though everyone can hear the thuds as it hits the roof, bounces off, and then hits the ground outside the front door.
Zombie Don takes 6 falling damage!

Figuring there's nothing to see in the fog below the window, Berthold slams the window shutter closed and calls "Reynald, my crossbow! Guilbert, bring my armor!" He then turns to Amnestria and offers his hand to help her up, adding in a softer voice, "You have my gratitude, Dame Elyphara. As soon as the immediate threat is handled, we will tend to your wounds."

Olyena quickly shifts the furniture they'd used to bar the door so that Reynald and Guilbert can rush across the hallway to bring Berthold the requested items.

Fern runs the rest of the way into the forest and begins blindly crashing through the undergrowth. Ene runs out of the barn doors to follow her, then stops for a moment, puzzled at the dimly-seen sight of Morton, standing at the edge of the light cast by Amnestria's coin diffused by the fog. ::Who's this guy, now?:: she boggles, then turns and sprints after Fern. If he's a bandit, he's not part of her gang! Morton sees this disheveled human girl look at him, eyes wide, then turn and flee in terror. She's halfway across the yard toward the trees with her Dash.

OOC:
@rpgventurer That's just flavor text; please post Kazzak's round eight turn. Kazzak is engaged with Dean, alone except for some stranger (Morton) concealed in the fields nearby.
Everyone else can post, too, particularly if you are not directly engaged with a zombie. If you are, you can instead choose to wait until after they attack.
Jul 2, 2026 5:10 am
Kazzak steps back and bangs the shield slowly, hoping to confuse whoever is controlling Dean (perhaps the hidden figure in the field?). His desire to return inside the house to evaluate the current situation overcomes his desire to charge and finish his foe. When he reaches the door, he slips quickly inside and secures it.
OOC:
Action: Disengage
Jul 2, 2026 8:48 pm
Berthold raised his shield in anticipation of the charge he intended to make. Trying to keep his voice calm, he spoke in an unnaturally courteous voice, "Dame Elyphara, please step aside. our guest has overstayed his welcome."

Crying out louder still, without turning his eyes away from the zombie, he exclaimed "Reynald get ready to bring the crossbow here as soon as I tell you to!"
OOC:
The knight will try to Bullrush don out the window, if he can. Perhaps Amnestria can do something to help, perhaps not. Of course, I’ll roll after Don has attacked, since Berthold is one scratch away from falling unconscious again.
Jul 2, 2026 8:51 pm
Dell sees the zombies following him. He can't believe the one he and Sora were fighting is still up and moving. They did enough damage to that thing to bring down a big brown bear. He thinks to himself they are slow so I should be able to lead them into the dim and away from the group. Out distance them and then get back to the farm house. Hopefully they were able to get to Sora in time and the two bandits he gave the chance to escape will see the error of their ways.

Action dash into dim.

Upstairs in the farmhouse, flanked by two Dungeon Busters, Don picks a target. Jerking around in a circle, its flailing arms batter the wizard, who casts Shield to block the blows!
OOC:
@CancerMan - correct me if you didn't want her to use Shield.
Out in the woods, Dina and Dvan continue pursuing Dell deeper into the Dim.

OOC:
Everyone else can post their round eight turns now. Of course, I already have turns for Dell and Berthold.
@WhtKnt - While not dying, Sora is still unconscious at 0 HP, unfortunately.
Jul 5, 2026 12:43 am
Amnestria shrieks, flinching away from the fists of Don and instinctively throwing up her arms as though to block. Her gesture is close enough to the manipulation of arcane abjuration, instantaneously forming the magical ward to thwart the zombie's strike.

Realizing that her magic has protected her, Amnestria processes what Sir Berthold suggested and says, "Whatever you're doing, do it now!" She ducks down to become the fulcrum of the time-honored prank to help the nobleman shove the zombie out the window.
OOC:
I will Help Berthold perform his next action, assuming it will be a Shove against the zombie to push it 5 feet away and out the window (Bertie's Strength(Athletics) with Advantage vs Don's Strength(Athletics) or Dexterity(Acrobatics)).

Grallaria will hold her position and just fly around, in case someone reappears outside.

The moment Sora's breathing steadies beneath his touch, Antonius slips his arms beneath her shoulders and begins dragging the unconscious monk back across the threshold of the farmhouse. The effort is slow, his body aching from the night's relentless fighting, but he refuses to leave her lying helpless in the yard. Once inside, he eases her carefully against the wall of the main room, placing himself between her and the unseen dangers lurking deeper within the house.

Before closing the door, Antonius glances back across the moonlit yard. Through the drifting darkness he catches sight of Fern awkwardly disappearing into the Dim Forest, hobbling between the trees with her ankles still bound. He searches instinctively for Ene, expecting the second captive to follow, but sees only empty shadows.

"Only one..." he mutters under his breath. "Where are you hiding?"

Then the sounds come again.

Heavy footsteps. A muffled crash. The dull ring of steel striking something unseen. The magical fog that Amnestria had conjured still filled much of the farmhouse, swallowing the corridors and stairwell in a grey veil that turned every sound into an uncertain echo.

Antonius tightens his grip on Final Measure and peers into the mist.

"Kazzak!" he calls into the fog. "Answer me! Is that you, or one of the dead?"

No reply comes immediately—only another scrape somewhere beyond the veil.

His pulse quickens.

Rather than rushing blindly into the obscuring mist, Antonius plants himself protectively over Sora, shield raised before them and warhammer poised to strike. Every instinct from his years in the Watch warns against charging into ground he cannot see. If friend or foe emerged from the fog, they would have to come through him first.

Silent and unmoving, the cleric listens intently, straining to distinguish the measured tread of an ally from the relentless shuffle of the dead.
OOC:
I take it dragging Sora inside is an action? If not he’ll take the ready action to attack, trigged if a Zombis staggers out of the fog at him.

Dell keeps moving into the dim. He is glad that he is used to working alone and in the shadows. He just keeps thinking of the time when he and Chase were fourteen and they went on a night hunt by themselves for the first time. They were after a shadow cat that had been terrorizing the farmsteads in the area killing livestock. They were unsuccessful on that hunt but came back in one piece. Dell keeps his ears open for the familiar sounds of the woods they are a comfort and he knows if they go silent he knows that is a warning.

He will keep leading the dead heads further in and hoping someone was able to get to Sora.

Action- dash to keep ahead. (40' ahead?)
